@Msuxg: Where the RSC wholly owns the copyright, you could consider releasing the image under an open licence (as Ms. magazine did). If you don't want to do that for something including the RSC logo, you could release just image in the middle section.   • Development
    • Making final fixes to initial version of Federation (needed to be able to use Wikidata items and properties to describe media on Commons in the future)
    • More work on baseline for Lexeme entity type for Wiktionary support
    • Fixed an error on d:Special:ConstraintReport (phabricator:T158183)
    • Wikidata Query Service got additional servers, the data has been reloaded to fix a number of issues caused by missed updates and an increase of the time-out of 30s is being looked into.

Recent changes

Changes this week

  • Page Previews will be updated on 23 February. This fixes many bugs. Page Previews can be turned on as the Beta Feature called Hovercards. [2]
  • There has been a problem where the CSS of gadgets has been loading twice. The Gadgets extension has two new options: type and peers. The type option solves this problem. You can use peers to create gadgets with more than one style module. Read more about type and peers. [3]
  • OAuth will handle blocked users in a more consistent way. [4]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 February. It will be on all wikis from 23 February (calendar).

  • You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 21 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Problems

  • On 22 February the wikipedia.org portal did not work for an hour. This was because of a problem with a JavaScript file. [5]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use <chem> to write chemical formulas in the visual editor. Previously this only worked in the wikitext editor. [6]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 March. It will be on all wikis from 2 March (calendar).

Future changes

  • You can soon upload 3D files to Commons. The file formats are AMF and STL. The plan is for this to work later this week but it could be later. [7]
  • The name "Wikipedia" will be more obvious at the top of the page when you read Wikipedia in the mobile view. This is because many readers don't realize they are on Wikipedia. [8][9]

Wikidata question

Andy, as you know much more about Wikidata than I do, I thought I'd ask you about Q2585338. It is named as "Pseudicius vulpes", but according to the World Spider Catalog, widely accepted as the definitive secondary source for spider taxonomy, in 2016 it was transferred to Orienticius vulpes. (See "Taxon details Orienticius vulpes (Grube, 1861)", World Spider Catalog, Natural History Museum Bern, retrieved 2017-02-28.) Can this be fixed on Wikidata? @Peter coxhead: In principle yes, though in case others disagree, it might be better to propose that first at d:Wikidata talk:WikiProject Taxonomy, or if you do not find that forum conducive to such a change, at d:Wikidata:Project chat. Technical news

  • A recent query shows that only 16% of administrators on the English Wikipedia have enabled two-factor authentication. If you haven't already enabled it please consider doing so.
  • Cookie blocks should be deployed to the English Wikipedia soon. This will extend the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user after they switch accounts under a new IP.
  • A bot will now automatically place a protection template on protected pages when admins forget to do so.

Manual Interwiki links

Hey! I had this discussion with Montanabw concerning an edit I've made which added a manual Interwiki link to another Wiki (in this case, linked Airs above the ground to the section concerning that topic in the Hungarian Wikipedia). She reverted and said I should talk to you about why manual links have proven to be difficult and are not really appreciated anymore. Whilst not being informed about technichal issues, I still believe that for user-friendliness, it is actually quite nice to link to all other articles, although other Wikis may have different syntax. Still, it would be a shame to have thousands of unlinked articles just because they do not have an exact counter-part in any other Wiki... Anyways, I can also see the difficulties (Wikidata being easy to overwatch and make changes to), manual links probably being very hard on maintanance... Still would be very grateful for an explanation from your side. Meanwhile, all the best to you, --Fallen Sheep (talk) 10:25, 5 March 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes

  • You can now search on English, French, Hebrew and Greek wikis and find words even if you forget the diacritics. It also works if you use diacritics in your search but the wiki doesn't. [10]
  • When you use the mobile view and click on a link to an article in another language you will see that article in the mobile view. Previously it changed to the desktop view. [11]

Problems

  • Some watchlist gadgets didn't work for a period of time last week. This has now been fixed. [12]
  • Admins who click on "mass delete" on a user's Special:Contributions will be taken directly to a list pages created by that user. It has worked like this before, but not lately. [13]

Changes this week

  • The way you switch between wikitext and the visual editors in the desktop view has changed. It is now a drop-down menu. This is the same as in the mobile view. [14]
  • The "flag the edit in the abuse log" checkbox will be removed from the abuse filter interface. This is because the edits are always flagged in the abuse log. [15]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 March. It will be on all wikis from 9 March (calendar).

Transfer of 3 scholarly translations of Quran and Hadiths from Tufts University host, bot?

Hi Andy, @RexxS and I would appreciate your input or guidance on this, because it would be a valuable resource to host as wikisource or wherever appropriate. The University of Southern California used to host the translations, "Template:cite quran" pointed there, but USC archive is dead since January 2017. Tufts hosts all three under Creative Commons license, and it would be a loss if they someday go the USC way for whatever reason. Thanks, Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 15:10, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
