"Formerly named "Alloweze""

Is that German? Thanks for your improvements!--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 00:20, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kintetsubuffalo: I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's French (a misspelling of Claude-Jean Allouez) and was carried west from Minnesota by the German-American settlers. SounderBruce 00:22, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say that's too far afield, and wouldn't count that one, then...--Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 00:24, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DuPont station pictures

I created a Commons category for DuPont station and added the link to the article. Not sure exactly where the future station will be wrt the existing bus station. Maybe the images I took over the weekend should be moved to something for the bus station alone? Anyway, thought you'd be interested. I have created Category:Sound Transit transit centers on Commons for the bus station, but will hold off for your input on whether this is a good idea. This seems to be a unique site in that it is a) future combined rail and bus transit center and b) wholly owned by Sound Transit, i.e. not part of another regional system such as Pierce Transit or KC Metro. Or maybe it isn't unique; is the Overlake Transit Center in the same category? ☆ Bri (talk) 18:59, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Bri: The rail platform should be close to the bus station, but design of the station is a few years away. Having a combined category is fine (and thanks for uploading the images), but breaking down transit centers by ownership is probably not a good idea. Sound Transit/WSDOT/local agencies often swap ownership of the facilities for various projects, and various agencies may serve the centers. The Bus stations in Washington (state) category is fine as it is, though it could be broken down by county if there's too many subcategories. Overlake is wholly owned by Sound Transit, though the land was donated by Microsoft (not sure if it's a lease or was given outright) and Metro owns its own shelters for RapidRide. SounderBruce 21:59, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wow that is fascinating on the ownership issues. It looked to me that the DuPont station was for Sound Transit only, no Pierce or other agencies involved in the signage at least. I wonder how jurisdiction shakes out if there's a law enforcement issue, say at Federal Way transit center. ST has their own police right? Do they have the ability to make arrests on station property if it isn't actually ST property, I wonder?
The category structure on Commons is starting to look a little messy especially with so much stuff directly below Category:Transit centers in the United States. 73 categories to be exact -- that's really not good. I'll just leave the categories alone now and let people who know better sort it out. ☆ Bri (talk) 22:17, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think DuPont is intended to be used by Pierce Transit, but the service area doesn't extend that far anymore (and it never had local bus service). ST contracts with the King County Sheriff, so I think a Federal Way situation is straightforward, but I think that law enforcement issues are left to whoever responds first. As for the commons category, I believe it might be time to start having state-level transit center subcategories, though it would overlap again with the Bus stations categories. 2018 Southern California mudflows

I don't much care for your heavy-handed reverts of entire edit sessions due to your fixation on a single aspect of an edit. You seem to be in the habit of swatting flies using a baseball bat. Due to the three-revert rule, you now own the crappy writing in 2018 Southern California mudflows. Deal with it. — Quicksilver (Hydrargyrum)T @ 16:44, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Hydrargyrum: Your "copy-edit" was almost entirely made of unnecessary backend work (adding a dash to the accessdate parameter changes nothing, since it isn't deprecated either way), with the only visible changes breaking consistency in the use of The Los Angeles Times and US 101 as an abbreviation. Had you instead changed all of the uses of The Los Angeles Times to your preferred format, then it would be acceptable and there would be no conflict. And you could do well to be nicer and assume good faith. SounderBruce 23:50, 14 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

University of Washington station

List of Link light rail stations

I don't want the station articles to be inconsistent, so I'll let you determine if you think they should have "see also" sections linking to List of Link light rail stations. I just saw the University of Washington station article was nominated for Featured status, so the issue might be raised there. My argument is based on this link, which says, "As a general rule, the "See also" section should not repeat links that appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes." Happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 02:55, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

With the new navbox, I think it would be best to remove the See also sections from other station articles. I've been tinkering around with AWB to figure out if it can remove the sections cleanly, but to no avail. Feel free to start removing them! SounderBruce 02:57, 16 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cherriots

Quit reverting my edits to include your incorrect fleet info. The source from April 2017 had many typos.

Also, in the first paragraph of the page I included sources.

Gilligphantom (talk), 16 January 2018 19:40 (PST)

@Gilligphantom: The bus roster that you added to the page has no direct, in-line citation. Please provide one or it must be removed. The lead section of the article is not supposed to duplicate information from the history section that has not been properly condensed into a readable summary. Any further reverts are a violation of the three-revert rule and could get you blocked. SounderBruce 03:43, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@SounderBruce: As for the fleet, 115-122 are not Orion VII buses, and 215-222 aren't Gilligs. It is the other way around.

The info is incorrect in the intro paragraph, it shows that Salem Area Mass Transit District changed its name to Salem Keizer Transit in 2003. This is not true, they have kept SAMTD as a formal name since their creation. Salem Keizer Transit replaced the Salem Area Transit name.

That kind of granular detail should not be included in the lead, per the policy I linked above. It's u to the history section to explain the three names in detail. SounderBruce 03:52, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review for Easton Area Public Library

SounderBruce, first let me thank you for taking on my GA nomination. It's been sitting for a long time now and I was surprised and thrilled this morning when I got your first message. I worked pretty hard tonight going over your recommendations and leaving replies on the GA list. This is my first time going through this process so I used checkmarks to help myself mark my progress and to show what is completed. There are only a couple things I did not touch and I gave my explanations why I left them that way for now. The Palmer Branch and recent news I can expand on more over the coming months/years, but I still haven't found anything worth mentioning in the Wikipedia article. I figured I'd post here to let you know I'm done for this evening and await your replies to my comments on the GA page. Thank you very much again, this is very exciting for me :) SEMMENDINGER (talk) 07:01, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Semmendinger: The backlog is indeed pretty awful right now! I will be looking over the review tomorrow, since it's getting a bit late here. I am actually planning to expand coverage of libraries in Washington state over the next year or so (and have started with articles like Sno-Isle Libraries), so this review is going to be helpful in forming my own style of library articles. Overall, the article looks pretty good, so a decision should come soon. Cheers. SounderBruce 07:10, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I figured as such! That's awesome you're considering doing that - ironically I had the same exact idea for my current state and made an article page for almost every single library system in Georgia not even a year ago. They're all listed on my userpage, and if you're interested in the format (if it helps at all - who knows?) here's a link to my format (admittedly set up Georgia-specific haha): User:Semmendinger/library. Take your time with the GA review, I appreciate all your help and support. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 07:32, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for all your help Sounder, you made the process painless and easy. Hope to run into you again in the future! SEMMENDINGER (talk) 14:30, 18 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Very Newbie!

Hi, Bruce, thanks for the notes you sent me. Not sure I'm doing this right, so please forgive if not--one thing I haven't done yet is posted on anyone else's Talk page. I was working on this page in collab with a fellow librarian, as we have new info about the history of Hwy 99 around Bellingham. As we poked around further, we came to realize that there's a lot about the Highway 99 whole series of pages, but especially the ones dealing with Washington, that don't seem to follow the structure that is in Calif. and Oregon. So for now I'm going to let it go, until I find out more, but one of my questions was how to hook in to other people who are working on it, so that I don't plow right through someone else's effort! So you helped a lot on that right out of the box!

I'm pretty new to this but quickly becoming addicted. Thanks for your help and your patience! Cheers. Now let's see if this works--if not, this is Susanzwitter. Susanzwitter (talk) 22:41, 22 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@RoySmith: Typically, DYK reviews aren't placed into the approved queue until after all issues are resolved by the reviewer and given the green tick mark. After that, it will sit and wait until one of the coordinators pick the hook for a set in the preparation area. Project Triple Crown's

Hi there. So normally I process all the Triple Crown nominations, purely because I noticed that nobody else was doing it. In all the years I've been watching the nomination page you are the first person to nominate for a project-related Triple Crown. I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how these particular nominations work. For example, as per the criteria, how am I supposed to check whether "five or more members [of the project] qualify for a standard triple crown on the basis of editing work for that project"? Even though you need to have five qualifying members, do I only place the award on your userpage? Anyway I'm mainly just contacting you to let you know the reason I haven't processed your nomination (though I am still processing others) is because I don't know what to do with yours. So yeah, just a heads up that you'll either have to wait for someone else to process it or find someone who knows what the deal is and can explain it to me as if I'm eight-years old. :) Freikorp (talk) 12:35, 22 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

  • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
  • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
  • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
  • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! What do you think it would need to get to B or A? --GRuban (talk) 22:50, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@GRuban: I was going off the existing assessment, but I think the article needs to dig up some of his early career in Washington, D.C. in order to satisfy the B-Class criteria of reasonable coverage. The article is probably good enough to head off to WP:GAN in its current state (with a little more polish). SounderBruce 22:52, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Honolulu Rail Transit stations

Hey, I see that you have edited the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport station article that Quidster4040 created. I do not know if you are interested in working on mass transit articles outside of the Puget Sound area, but there is a whole series of future Honolulu Rail Transit stations that have yet to be created. Peaceray (talk) 04:13, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Peaceray: It's been at the back of my to-do list for a while. If I can gather some good sources together or find access to a newspaper archive, I should be good to go. SounderBruce 04:21, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Here's some things that either might provide a start, or at least be of interest to you:
  • VOK (2018-03-04). "HART Board of Directors Unanimously Approve Hawaiian Names for First Nine Rail Stations". The Voice of Kapolei. Archived from the original on 2018-03-04. Retrieved 2018-03-04. {{cite web}}: Unknown parameter |dead-url= ignored (|url-status= suggested) (help)
  • "9 rail stations' new Hawaiian names reflect history of sites". Honolulu Star-Advertiser. 2017-11-23. Retrieved 2018-03-04. {{cite web}}: Unknown parameter |subscription= ignored (|url-access= suggested) (help)
  • "Hawaiian Station Naming Program" (PDF). hartdocs.honolulu.gov. 2017-11-22. Retrieved 2018-03-04.
  • "HI: 5 Plans to Take Rail Past Ala Moana Face a Host of Obstacles". Mass Transit. Retrieved 2018-03-04.
  • Hrushka, Anna (2018-03-01). "Honolulu rail authority activates rail monitoring system in Waipahu". Pacific Business News. Retrieved 2018-03-04.
  • "Search for 'Honolulu Rail'". Honolulu Civil Beat. Retrieved 2018-03-04.
  • "Search for 'Honolulu Rail'". Hawaii Public Radio. Retrieved 2018-03-04.
I would advise including the archive information for any TV station, should you choose to use one of those sources. The Honolulu TV stations often seem to redesign their websites anytime they change ownership, so better to have have the web.archive.org as a permanent source for them or any other source that you think is likely to go away. If it's not already archived, you can drop the URL into web.archive.org; it will then indicate it's not archived & will offer to archive it. After it is archived, it will provide the link, then you can drop it into "Citer". to get the completed citation template. The last thing would be to change |dead-url=yes to |dead-url=no.
Peaceray (talk) 05:27, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the links, Peaceray. I have already started my own notes section in my sandbox, and am currently trying to track down the present official names for each of the stations. Half of them have an adopted Hawaiian-language name, while others are still using their working names, so things look confusing. SounderBruce 05:28, 4 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Timothy Weah

What on earth is your problem? Mentioning "professional" in the lede is standard (to indicate notability); club names should be piped; reflist does not need '30em'. If you disagree then feel free to post at WT:FOOTBALL, they will agree with me. Plus no idea why you are removing a valid reference from the BBC? GiantSnowman 17:21, 7 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@GiantSnowman: I'll drop my opposition to the lede, seeing as it's used in a majority of other footballer articles (as redundant as it might be, since we rarely write about amateur players) and the piping of the club name, which is contested regularly on WT:Football. I will, however, ask that you revert your reversions to the season line (added by an IP and actually pretty useful for clarifying things) and the formatting of the reference section. For the latter, generating columns are especially helpful on wide screens (like the majority of PCs) and the article has enough citations at the moment to warrant a split into columns; as it grows, it would look unprofessional for there to be a single, narrow column of references that takes up the majority of the page's vertical space. As for the BBC match report, it was unformatted (with a bare URL) and isn't used to cite any new information not already covered by the first two sources. SounderBruce 01:20, 8 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
30em automatically comes into effect if there are more than 10 refs, there is no need for the specific parameter. I don't see why you cannot format the BBC ref; it's an incredibly reliable source which explicitly mentions the debut early on in the article. It's useful. Washington State Route 520 scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the Washington State Route 520 article has been scheduled as today's featured article for April 10, 2018. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/April 10, 2018, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1100 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:13, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jimfbleak: Appreciate the work, but I'd rather have the article at TFA on August 28 (the 55th anniversary of the original bridge's opening). If it has to go in April, then either April 11 or April 25 (the 2nd anniversary of the new bridge's westbound and eastbound lanes opening) would do. I'd prefer the former. SounderBruce 03:25, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that. In the light of what you have said above, I'm likely to run it on 11 April. I'm struggling for various reasons to find a US road to run in April, and it's a category like birds and video games where we really need to schedule one per month to make any inroads on the deficit. There isn't a guarantee, of course, that it would have run in August anyway; it's not "my" month, and multiple articles may be scheduled for the same slot. I had a road that was requested for an April date, but it clashed with another date-linked article that had a better claim to be run on that date. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:38, 17 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure if "parks atop" is going to be clear to readers who haven't seen this feature before. Maybe a park or greenway on an overpass or bridge? - Dank (push to talk) 22:39, 18 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I added the term "lid", which is what engineers and the press use to describe these structures. SR 520's lids are too wide to be called greenways or bridges, so I think this works. SounderBruce 23:19, 18 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think the typical reader will know what a lid on a highway is. Describe the structure ... up to 1050 characters is fine. I saw you mentioned acreage at one point, I think it would help if people knew what size we're talking about. - Dank (push to talk) 00:56, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I think acreage would be problematic, given that we're talking multiple lids (two of which haven't been built or gone through final design yet). It's honestly not that important to include in the TFA blurb, so I'll take it out. SounderBruce 01:02, 19 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe this is too late to be useful, but the Crawford Street Bridge in downtown Providence was called the world's widest and was over 1,000 feet across [2]. I lived there at one time and didn't even realize that it was a bridge. ☆ Bri (talk) 14:40, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bri: Interesting, but I would definitely consider it to be a cap/lid. A bridge needs to be significantly longer than it is wide to count, in my eyes. SounderBruce 22:38, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with your choice of "lid". Crawford Street Bridge was definitely weird at 1,100 ft wide x 120 ft riverbank to riverbank. ☆ Bri (talk) 23:52, 13 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the highway which "is the bane of thousands of daily commuters in the Seattle area, with its daily bouts of congestion (in both directions, twice a day) and never-ending construction. @EdJohnston: Walter Görlitz's deletion of content comes without consensus (or even discussion for one section) from other users on the talk page, where an active discussion is taking place. @Kudpung: I don't think I've ever used that template. Usually I'm tagging articles with {{rough translation}}, but I don't encounter non-English articles. SounderBruce 04:38, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation. A rough translation, especially a machine one, should preferably not be left in mainspace (it could be an unsourced BLP, a COPYVIO, or even an attack page). Take English vs German for example where due to the differences in grammar, a machine translation can easily come up with the very opposite to what was said in the original version. If such machine tanslations are found as new articles, I usually move them to draft where they will expire and be deleted CSD13 if the 'creator' does not react. WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
