Do you create interactive maps with Kartographer (mapframe)? If your answer is yes, we would like to hear from you. Please take part in our survey and help improve Kartographer!
Some background: Wikimedia Germany's Technical Wishes team is currently working on the Kartographer extension. Over the last few months, we have been working on a solution to make this software usable on wikis where it isn’t available yet. In the next phase of the project, we are planning to improve Kartographer itself.
Because Kartographer is used quite a lot on this wiki, we would like to ask you: Where do you run into problems using it? Which new features would you like to see? Editors of all experience levels and with all workflows around Kartographer are welcome to participate.
The map [File:Foreign trips of Paul VI.png] used in both List of pastoral visits of Pope Paul VI and Papal travel has several errors. The map was created on 16 January 2010. According to a 19 January 2011 note left on the map's Discussion page, the changes should include the following:
"This map has four errors which need to be corrected.
* The first two are rather confusing. You may want to read the Wikipedia article on Bangladesh for further clarification. In 1970, Pope Paul VI visited the city of Dacca, Pakistan. However Dacca is now Dhaka and is the capital city of Bangladesh. When the Pope visited Dacca, it was located in the part of Pakistan that was then known as East Pakistan. After the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, East Pakistan broke away from Pakistan and became the seperate nation of Bangladesh. Therefore, Pakistan should NOT be colored yellow on this map and Bangladesh SHOULD be colored yellow.
* Jordan was visited by Pope Paul VI in 1964. It SHOULD be colored yellow.
* France was NOT visited by Pope Paul VI during his papacy. It should NOT be colored yellow."
Is there anyone who can either edit the existing map OR create a new map with the correct information? The list of countries to be highlighted can be found at List of pastoral visits of Pope Paul VI with the very important notation re: Bangladesh as EAST Pakistan. I generally try to be self-sufficient with my Wikipedia editing but editing/creating a map is outside my skill set. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Mtminchi08 (talk) 00:41, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Fantasy Cartography
Hello WP:Maps, I'm currently working on the page Fantasy Cartography and would greatly appreciate any help/feedback to improve the article!

I want to make a dynamic map for West Farms Soldiers Cemetery, showing how land use changed over the years. There's several parcels of land near each other which were sequentially used as burial grounds by various owners. A church was built on one. Another church was built across the street. The first one burned down and now the land is used for something else. I envision a graphic with these various configurations all drawn on the same base map, and some kind of control that lets you scroll through the years to see what it was like at a given year. Is there some pre-existing tool or framework that would let me do that? -- RoySmith(talk) 17:41, 25 August 2022 (UTC)

I suppose that's one possible way to do it. I don't know much about animated gifs, but my understanding is they run at some fixed speed. Is there a way to hook a user control up to one to let somebody scroll through the frames at their own pace? -- RoySmith(talk) 18:05, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
The time is kind of flexible (it doesn't have to be the same for each frame). Unfortunately, AFAIK, allowing the end user to pause the frames can't be done on Wikipdia. As a workaround (depending on what you have in mind and the quality of the images involved), you could use a video (you can even start by creating an animated GIF and then convert it to ogr if you're still not happy with it). Support for generating OpenStreetMap dynamic maps into static maps on Wikivoyage
In a conversation on the Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub (just after the WNCA 2022 / Mapping USA presentations call), a user suggested that a tool be created to easily convert OpenStreetMap dynamic maps into Wikivoyage-style static maps. It seems to me that this already exists & is being used here on English Wikipedia. Would someone from this project please reach out to that user on Wikivoyage about such tools? Call for presentations for WCNA 2022 and Mapping USA
This is a call for presentations by Sunday, October 15 for WikiConference North America (Nov 11-13) held jointly with OpenStreetMap US's Mapping USA. We encourage you to please submit your Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project proposals at Wikiconference:2022/Submissions and OpenStreetMap US proposals at Call for Proposals: WikiConference North America + Mapping USA. On Friday, Nov 11, we are looking for lightning talks in particular. We welcome workshops, editathons/mapthons, birds of a feathers, and presentations on Saturday and Sunday.
Some suggestions:
Cultural similarities and differences, for instance OpenStreetMap and Wikivoyage (map and describe what you know) versus Wikipedia (verify with citations)
Type of licensing for each project and how they differ: Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, Commons, Wikidata, and Wikivoyage
The flow of information from one project into another, and how maps are generated and used

Does anyone have any suggestions for improving the maps on Busta Rhymes Island
Hi all
I've started the article for Busta Rhymes Island, does anyone have any suggestions for improving the maps on the article? Maybe something using Kartographer? Please feel free to make changes, I don't have the technical ability to do it myself.
I'm pretty familiar with the mapping solutions we have, and I'm particularly fond of using {{OSM Location map}}, but I can't find any project solutions for making a map that illustrates a route taken. Say we knew the details, and wanted to map the route taken by the protestors involved in the St. Louis gun-toting incident; do we have anything like that (that doesn't involve creating graphics—a deficit of my wheelhouse)? @Fourthords: One option to consider is storing the route as a Data:name.map on Commons. Use the {{Maplink}} template to draw the line. Provide the from parameter with the name of the Data file. Additional points of interest can be added directly in the template call from the article.
See an example of this technique which shows walking instructions. The steps are from the MTA subway to a meeting place in a park. Let me know if you need any additional pointers. - DutchTreat (talk) 16:16, 9 November 2022 (UTC)

@Fourthords: There is an easy way to build the GeoJSON interactively from a map. Try the tool geojson.io from Mapbox. If you have any troubles, let me know. DutchTreat (talk) 14:32, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

a better map for "Nineteen Eighty-Four" and "Political geography of Nineteen Eighty-Four"
Hey, everyone, I came across the map to the side and have a number of problems with it. I would like to create a new map without these problems, but would like opinions first. Update or remove map from Wikimaps Warper
I upladed this map to Commons: File:Admiralty Chart No 1273 St Lucia, Published 1889.jpg. I started to georeference it in the warper, but noticed some pencilled annotations that I hadn't spotted previously. I erased these from the paper chart, rescanned it and uploaded the new version. However Wikimaps Warper continues to use the old version. I have tried removing the Map template, logging out, logging back in and reentering the Map details, but Warper still sees the old version. How do I get Warper to update the file it uses, or alternatively remove the file from Warper and replace it with the new one? Many thanks. Kognos (talk) 12:46, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
I don't know the answer to the warper question, but thought I'd mention that the 1889 date on there is misleading, that's when first published, but it's had updates since then, the most recent being 1991, they're listed in the lower right corner.
