Questions about Locator Maps Conventions

  • Do locator maps require rivers and lakes to be shown, and if so, which lakes and rivers qualify as being significant enough to be shown on the map, and where can we find a database of these rivers and lakes?
  • Are there specified line thicknesses and colors used for borders between nations and/or subnational units, and if there are, what are they? Currently, I'm making a locator map where first-level subnational units are 10px thickness on a large image file and using #555555 color, the second-level units are 5px using #6f6f6f, and third-level units are #888888 and 3px. What do you all think about this?
  • Is the .SVG file format really mandatory for locator and location maps? I've been through many articles on Wikipedia and have seen numerous instances of a .PNG file being used instead of .SVG file for locator maps (examples Dallas, Stockholm, Santiago).

I don't think anything is "required", but lakes and rivers are often shown. Specifications for some colours can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Conventions, for line thickness just make sure they are visible at 220px wide. Svg is not mandatory but it is usually preferred. CMD (talk) 02:56, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Wikimaps Warper crashing

Does anyone know why Wikimaps Warper crashes with File:Golden Gate Park - panoramio (7).jpg? Clicking on the blue "View the georeferenced map in the Wikimaps Warper" button and then on "Add this map" yields: "We're sorry, but something went wrong. If you are the application owner check the logs for more information." I suspect it could be caused by the special characters in the name. - Iketsi (talk) 04:21, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

How to get coordinates for map

In QGis, I've made a map from OpenStreetMap data. I'd like to use it as a locator map, but I'm not sure on how to get the top, left, right and bottom coordinates. Any ideas? — Yours, Berrely • Talk∕Contribs 13:00, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

if you go to open streetmap you get manchester and I think the numbers at the end of the link 8/53.344/-1.708 are the zoom, then the north component (latitude), and then the east component (longitude) - (at least it looks correct greenwich observatory looks to be at 0 longitude) if you do similar for each corner of your map you should find what you're looking for. hope that helps EdwardLane (talk) 13:13, 20 January 2021 (UTC)

Copyright on precinct shapefiles?

Hi. I was wondering, how does copyright on precinct shapefiles work? If, for example, I used the shapefiles provided at this link by Minnesota's government, would there be any potential problems with uploading it to Wikimedia Commons? I believe geodata by itself cannot be copyrighted in the US, being "Ideas, facts, principles, processes, or discoveries". Relevant information may be that the website allows uploading with a license and that the specific dataset in question has "License not specified". CMD (talk) 03:22, 24 January 2021 (UTC)

Province location maps

Hello, I'm not really sure if this is the right WikiProject to ask, but here it goes. So, I've seen some settlement articles on some countries have 2 location maps, with one map of the whole country and other of the province (for example this is the case for German village articles). I was wondering if there was a specific requirement to including province maps in other countries or is it just that no one has tried to recreate this for other countries? I personally think a province/district map would help a lot in all village articles because country maps only give a general view about what side of the country the settlement is located in and not actually about where specifically it's located. It also includes areas to keep your to do lists, bookmarks, list of tools. You can customise your sandbox organiser to add new features and sections. Once created you can access it simply by clicking the sandbox link at the top of the page. You can create and then customise your own sandbox organiser just by clicking the button on the page. All ideas for improvements and other versions would be really appreciated.

Map made using Google Earth Projects

I made this map File:North Baffin Island.jpg using Google Earth projects and uploaded it to the Commons. Does this pass Wikipedia/Wikimedia standards? I used it in the Mary River Mine article. Thanks.Oceanflynn (talk) 04:45, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

@Oceanflynn: It's already been deleted from Commons, so probably you've already gathered that the answer is unfortunately no. The main problem is that most of the satellite imagery and cartographic data shown in Google Earth is under copyright. Even if that weren't the case, the WikiProject Maps conventions aim to produce minimalist, readable maps with a consistent appearance and a vector (SVG) format, which a map made in Google Earth is very unlikely to match. There are free sources of satellite imagery out there, but generally working with them requires specialist software. If you want an imagery-based map for Mary River Mine, maybe try the map workshop? – Joe (talk) 15:18, 17 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello again editors. I'm just dropping by with an update. Thanks to Joe Roe's suggestion to use the edit request template, one editor, CMD assisted with placing new, well-sourced drafted content within the current article's Mapping section. The assisting editor made a judgement call to leave the previous, unsourced information in the section and added "citation needed" tags, so it may be assessed by editors for removal in a separate edit. I wonder if there are any interested editors here willing to review the new section and help determine if the unsourced content may now be removed? Saxony

The map in the info box of Saxony has a problem that several editors have tried to fix. (It doesn't actually label which part of the map is Saxony). Looks like it needs an expert, if someone can help. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 07:14, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

What exactly is the problem? I see a map of Germany and there is a dark polygon in the southern part of what was East Germany. Comparing with other maps, it seems this does correspond with the state of Saxony. Looking at the discussion on Talk:Saxony#Map is broken, what is displayed for Saxony matches what is displayed for Brandenburg. Maybe this has been recently fixed? —seav (talk) 08:15, 31 March 2021 (UTC)
It's the map in the info box. With my browser (Google) there is nothing to show which part of the map is Saxony. Have you tested this on a different device or with a different browser? ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 11:48, 31 March 2021 (UTC)

World maps

I noticed that the Geography page uses the CIA maps. I'm not sure that it is a good option because it represents the US's view of the world. I would like to change it to a map that represents the world. Someone mentioned using the natural earth project. Discussion: [1]. I would like what the best world map is to use that is close to being neutral (doesn't have to be perfect) and whether the map is already uploaded to Commons or upload a new one there. @Interstellarity: Apart from the source, are there any specific problems or non-neutral aspects of those maps? Someone could create a similar map using Natural Earth and other public domain data, but it would be a hell of a lot of work if you want the same level of quality, and the result would be essentially identical. If the problem is only the representation of disputed territories and borders, then as pointed out in the Commons discussion, there is no "neutral" version possible – only a range of different perspectives. – Joe (talk) 15:26, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
@Joe Roe: I tried putting in the new CIA maps from 2021. An editor reverted my changes saying the map is not neutral referring to Western Sahara. One possibility would be to make the UN's view of the map which is neutral on whether WS is part of Morocco or an independent country. I should probably link this discussion I had with the editor that reverted me. What would be the best course of action to take if I want an up-to-date map that will please everyone and one that will likely be stable? Interstellarity (talk) 16:44, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

The map is potentially non-neutral over a number of issues, and potentially more neutral than some maps on other issues. I don't think an issue over one particular part of the world should guide usage of a general world map. Updating to the most recent version of a particular series seems both sensible and neutral, as otherwise it would be editorial preferences over which particular this and that is neutral. The Robinson projection article, which uses a map for illustration purposes, and others like do not need to display the latest US's view of the world. While I understand that it's impossible to find a map that is 100% neutral, I don't see the point in replacing a map with one that is even less neutral and clearly at odds with the other maps (UN, AU, etc.).
Since Interstellarity seems to be concerned with a number of inaccuracies displayed in both the old and the new map, I have updated the stable maps (fixed Burundi's capital, etc) and uploaded the PDF and SVG versions[2][3] of both. OK, I'll point out a few differences between the both physical maps:
  • Barrow changed its name to Utqiagvik. The old name is displayed in parentheses.
  • The islands owned by other countries (ex. Easter Island) are in parentheses. (Doesn't need to be changed, but FYI)
  • Small issue with Norwegian Islands (ex. Svalbard)
  • New one has one extra city in Algeria
  • Cities in the Philippines don't have city in the end.
  • Nay Pyi Daw in Myanmar has (administrative capital) in parentheses.
  • Palau's capital is Ngerulmud

 Done I also added the missing "Rub' Al Khali" to Saudi Arabia. The small issue with the Norwegian Islands (assuming we are referring to the same thing, i.e. the text) was due to aggressive optimization and is now fixed. Thanks for fixing those issues, however, there are two issues that should be addressed. On the Geography article, the map doesn't look right. That's the #1 issue that needs to be fixed. Also, none of the cities in the Philippines have the suffix of City. Also, can you fix the political map as well. That would be much appreciated. Interstellarity (talk) 18:57, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

The city suffix has been added to the Philippines cities, so I'm not quite sure what's happening here (unless, you're looking at the cached version that I messed up when trying to optimize the file). Significant bug in Module:Location map

I've identified a significant bug in Module:Location map that reliably displaces pins up to a degree two degrees eastward when using alternate syntax in maps located in the Western Hemisphere. The bug affects all maps generated by the {{location map}} family of templates. See my detailed bug report and suggested fix at the module's talk page.

Dynamic maps via Wikimedia Maps (Extension:Kartographer)

What is the attitude of this wikiproject towards the dynamic Wikimedia Maps (through Extension:Kartographer) provided via wikitext <mapframe> tag or via {{Maplink}} template? I think there probably have been separate individual efforts to employ dynamic maps in niches where it makes the most sense (routes, borders etc.). I personally worked on quite a few Interstate Highway System pages (almost all primary interstates employ dynamic maps in infobox) and others also worked on IHS or elsewhere. I would like to call for an organized effort to switch to Wikimedia Maps in places where it makes sense end help endorse these maps.--Kozuch (talk) 18:19, 28 May 2021 (UTC)

One of the first steps is the technical ability to even add these maps to articles, through their infoboxes. Evad37 has mostly been working on this, through Wikipedia:Mapframe maps in infoboxes, though I think it could use some more help. 2021 Blank map with national borders?

Is there updated 2021 version of this blank map with national borders (good for Paint)? What is origin of this map? I couldn't find it in Commons:Category:Blank maps of the world and its subcategories. The other question is how to edit it expect Paint? Eurohunter (talk) 19:10, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

That appears to be derived from File:A large blank world map with oceans marked in blue.PNG. I don't fully understand the second question, any image editor should work. What do you want to do exactly? CMD (talk) 02:13, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Back in the early days before svgs became more widespread there used to be many maps which used a png which had lines connecting all islands together, but I can't find an example now. An alternative would be to use a simpler map, or if you just want to highlight countries but aren't able to make an .svg, then asking at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop. SVG Locator maps of seas

Currently, virtually all of the locator maps of sea are PNGs or JPEGs.

I have created a set of SVG maps of most of the seas and would like to contribute them to Wikimedia (under the standard license (CC BY-SA 3.0)). However, I'm not sure how best to proceed.

I created the maps for the purposes of the Anki Ultimate Geography deck, so I chose the style of the maps to fit in with that of the maps already used there. The vast majority of the maps previously present there were taken (obviously in compliance with their license) from the German Locator map project, and in particular the SVG 16:9 locator maps of countries, (for example Belarus in its region) hence I followed their stylistic and mapping choices:

  • Using the Winkel Tripel projection.
  • Including country borders (despite the focus of the maps being on the seas!).
  • Including a mini-map.
  • Using the same colours for coastlines, country borders, seas, land territories and the mini-map.

The main independent choice was choosing a colour for the highlighted seas. AFAICT there are no specific guidelines in the Locator maps design recommendations regarding the marker colour for water bodies. The generally recommended dark red marker colour looked extremely weird for seas, so I chose a dark blue (#4790c8).

(As background: "Anki Ultimate Geography" is a flashcard deck for the open-source, spaced-repetion system, Anki. Its purpose is to help people learn the locations, capitals and flags (where appropriate) of various geographical areas — countries, regions and seas.)

The maps are generated from Natural Earth Data's shapefiles, mostly using mapshaper, via a horribly messy web of scripts (available here). In general, where possible, I aimed to follow the IHO's 1953 "Limits of Oceans and Seas" to determine the extent of the seas (the data in the shapefiles was mostly, with a couple of exceptions, consistent with these definitions). Occasionally I instead followed the IHO's 2002 draft of "Limits of Oceans and Seas".

The generated maps are available here (a couple of them in the "original" SVG, the remainder converted to PNG — git wasn't too happy with a larger number of the relatively heavy SVG files). (I obviously have all the SVGs on my computer.)

My main questions are:

1. What naming scheme should I follow for the maps? (Would "{name of sea} in its region" be OK?)

2. How should I categorise them? (e.g. should I add them to this category?)

3. The SVGs are pretty large (~ 5 MB). Should I try to reduce this (e.g. removing the extent of countries, which is nice-to-have in case somebody wishes to edit one to highlight both a given country and a given water body, but not exactly essential for the maps-as-they-currently-are)?

4. As described above, the stylistic choices were based on the SVG locator maps for countries, rather than on the existing PNG locator maps of seas. I think having such a set of maps which highlight seas in the political context (country borders) is valuable. However, it might be worth also creating a set of SVG maps that are very close to the existing PNG ones, so that they could be drop-in replacements. (That would involve copying the colour scheme (possibly with changes?) and the choice of "cropping" (what areas other than the seas themselves, are visible. Some of the PNG maps have slightly fuzzy choices regarding the extent of the seas, in some cases (e.g. Celtic Sea), so IMO it would probably be best not to copy that. As the current PNG images are extremely light, it might also be worth more aggressively optimising the size of the SVGs.) If some other style (colours/choice of projection) would be desirable I could also probably do that, relatively easily.

Lighter relief map for Portugal

Currently, Module:Location map/data/Portugal uses File:Portugal location map Topographic.png as its relief map, however, wouldn't it make more sense to use File:Reliefkarte Portugal.png? The current relief map makes labels hard to read, and changing the map to the lighter version would make it the same as the majority of other relief maps used for other locations. It seems that most country map templates do use the lighter style. I'm gessing the darker style is older, as it seems to only be used for a few smaller countries, like Antigua and Barbuda, Portugal, Uruguay, Saint Lucia, and Senegal. Justin Kunimune (talk) 14:03, 18 July 2021 (UTC)

Map error

So I was about to fix errors on my map (I just realized that on the top right of my map the island of Borneo was missing) and then I uploaded the new version, and then it goes blank. And that was not my main problem, my main problem is I can't upload a new version of it.

How to add a road to a map?

I'm trying to add a line showing the extent of the road at Southern Boulevard (Bronx). I think what I need to do is add "type=line|id=Q14707315" to the maplink-road template. Then I have to add a "KML file" item to Q14707315 in wikidata. The problem is, it's not clear how to generate this KML file. Presumably there's a way to export the OSM data, but I'm not seeing how that works. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:11, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

@RoySmith, the easiest way to do this is to directly call the OpenStreetMap relation (which is very complex and a pain to explain), which in a nutshell in this case would be this (I used the query tool to pick the road, then picked the Southern Boulevard relation). I copied the relation ID (9316594), and went to the Wikidata article for the page. There I added the "OpenStreetMap relation ID" statement and pasted in the value, and published. The {{maplink}} template should automatically update, thought recently there have been some issues (see this discussion), so it may take some time. Thanks, but that's only a fraction of Southern Blvd. At the top end, it continues east (on some maps shown as "Dr. Theodore L. Kazimiroff Boulevard") to Bronx Park East / Allerton Ave . You've got it correct down to 141st street, now we just need to add in the part over to Allerton Ave. New York City does this thing of sometimes, giving streets two names; an official name, and also a commemorative name to honor somebody (and confuse a lot of other people). Probably a stupid question, but now that the OSM relation ID was added, why isn't the road highlighted (I can't see it) and how come we need to add {{maplink-road|12|40.85226|-73.88198|id=Q14707315}} when {{maplink-road}} seems to work for Mosholu_Parkway? @M.Bitton I think I see what's going on with the Mosholu Parkway example, and why @Berrely was able to remove it here as well. Looking at the docs for {{Maplink}}; for id it says, "... Defaults to the current page's Wikidata id". I'm still not sure how it gets that value, but I'm guessing by a reverse lookup of the sitelink statement at Southern Boulevard (Q14707315)? -- RoySmith (talk) 14:28, 9 October 2021 (UTC)
Yep, that's it. {{Maplink}} uses {{#invoke:Wd}} iirc to pull the Wikidata page, then checks for the OSM relation ID and use mw:Extension:Kartographer to generate the map. — Berrely • Talk∕Contribs 17:05, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Tissot's indicatrix listing and variants

Hallo! Some context: I was looking at the Dymaxion article, which led me to Tissot's indicatrix#Gallery, which left me wondering if there was a larger listing, or a good comparison table. I checked commons:Category:Map projections with Tissot's indicatrix and saw many unused projections. I considered adding some of those images into the Gallery in the article..., but first I thought to check List of map projections. I was a bit surprised to not see the Tissot's indicatrix versions in a column there, so checked the talkpage to see if it was discussed or contentious, and found an 2017 thread where 3 people discussed it, 2 endorsing and 1 unconvinced (and nothing in the archives here).

My questions/suggestions:

  1. Listing/Availability: Should/Can we add the Tissot's indicatrix versions we currently have, into a new column in that main "List of map projections" article? Are there any downsides, apart from taking more space and download-bytes, and possibly not having "all of the projections" available currently (or just not in the same style)?
  2. Accuracy/Design: I see there are a few variant 'styles' in the Commons category, e.g. the difference between File:Tissot indicatrix world map Winkel Tripel proj.svg and File:Winkel Tripel with Tissot's Indicatrices of Distortion.svg - we use both of those, in different articles in Enwiki, and I wonder if that's a cartographical problem? and if so, who knows enough about this to efficiently fix it?! Maybe sorting the Commonscat into subcats, or deciding on a preferred-style for Enwiki, or nominating some for deletion, or ?

Re #1: As I noted in the 2017 thread, I don’t see the value because the images would be too small. Either you would have too few indicatrices to say anything informative about the map, or you would not be able to see them because they would be too small. :Re #2: There isn’t much software available to create the indicatrices. The differing schemes arose out of which software was used; there are more in play than just the two slightly different schemes that you show. I don’t know of any effort to standardize. Hi, I would appreciate some input from anyone interested on my comment at Talk:Arab League#Infobox map: Western Sahara. Wikimaps Warper

I have recently started georeferencing with Wikimaps warper, and have several queries. I see there is a warp_status flag. Is there process or check on this, or do I just set the flag to "warped" once I have rectified the file? Is it possible to get the latitude/longitude values for the map from the georeferencing process or do I have to exract these by hand? Is it possible to view all georeferenced maps in a particular area? If I am viewing all the maps in a category in Commons, is there a way of showing which maps have been georeferenced? Map for Claremont Park

I have never been able to get my head around how {{maplink}} works. Could somebody please add a map to the infobox on Claremont Park for me? My understanding is that since the OSM entry already has the wikidata id, all I should need to do is add "| map_image = {{maplink}}" to the infobox (which I've done), but no map appears. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:13, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

It looks like the documentation for {{infobox park}} is out of date. If you don't specify any maps, the OSM map is automatic if the coords are in WD. I've made it work. MB 16:27, 4 December 2021 (UTC)

World map 1910s

Both the File:BlankMap-World-WWI.PNG and File:BlankMap-World-1912.png don't have any borders for the Emirate of Bukhara and Khanate of Khiva (included as being part of the Russian Empire) and Tibet (included as part of China), despite them being present on File:Map of the World (1914).PNG. It can be argued that these were semi-independent, or de facto independent (in Tibet's case) but should it still not appear? --WR 16:16, 14 December 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a weird one. When I first saw the problem, I noticed something seemed odd about the map, but it took me a while to figure out that the lakes were missing.
