Closure of move request

In regard to your closure of Template talk:Main talk other#Requested move 29 November 2022, you say you found it difficult to determine consensus? There were two supporters, myself and the proposer, and only one "weak oppose". If that's not consensus on Wikipedia to move, then what is? Please reopen and and let another editor close it, or reclose it as moved, since that is the obvious consensus. P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 17:22, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

I wish I'd had an easier year, and that text-based communication conveyed tone better, so I could read this painelessly. In more relevant matters, happy new year, please excuse the inconvenience, and I've reclosed the move. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 20:37, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Guess 2022 wasn't a good year for most of us. Hope everything gets much better for you and yours, and Happy New Year to you, too! P.I. Ellsworth , ed. put'r there 22:23, 4 January 2023 (UTC)

Question from FancieLittle214 on Wikipedia:Teahouse/Suggestions (17:06, 11 January 2023)

Hello I was wondering if you could help me editing it's my first time. --FancieLittle214 (talk) 17:06, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello, FancieLittle214, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm happy to help. What specifically would you like to do? Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 18:54, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

Hello mentor

Wikipedia says they've assigned you as my mentor. Can you teach me stuff? Wallflower2048 (talk) 20:17, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Depends on what you want to learn (: Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 01:36, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Whatever you want to lol. But the foremost query I have is why the h do people revert my edits every single time? I've been on Wikipedia for a decade & started editing a few years prior from another account but they just revert everything without even writing the reason no matter what reliable source I provide.
Are they just bullying me because I'm a newcomer or are they on a mission to disrupt every logical edit that has ever been made. Wallflower2048 (talk) 03:06, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
As someone who cannot read minds, I gently suggest you ask the ones who have reverted your edits. You can do so on their user talk or by pinging on the article talk.
Please kindly do so in a way that is civil and makes assumes good faith. Cheers, Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 03:29, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Questions from Kindergartendad (January 2023)

Hi! I want to create a page for my late father who was one of the most influential farmer and labor leaders in the Philippines in the past 70 years. I created an account for myself and uploaded the write-up so it seems like the title is my username instead of his. Do I need to create another account with his name? Thanks! --Aqmontemayor (talk) 01:46, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

No, your username is fine. The main problem is that you've transferred word-for-word the article you (?) wrote for the Phil Star, which is copyrighted. You can donate material you hold the copyright to, but donating a tribute to an encyclopedia may not be appropriate because they serve different purposes and have different styles and tone. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 02:47, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
(Forgot to ping you the first time around.) You can try to rewrite the draft in original words through the article wizard. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 02:57, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Hi, appreciate your help.again as my latest draft has been declined again. One comment given by the reviewer LordVoldemort728 is that "many sections are unsourced." Not sure what that means as I am the subject's biographer and the book (published about him) and which is the basis of many of my texts were based on hundreds of face-to-face interviews in 2002-2003. Of course there are other sources listed in the Refetences I inidicated. Any suggestions? Will this be solved simply by putting some of the citations on my text instead of just in the reference list? I am a bit confused since 2 related wikipedia subjects cited in my article (johnny c. Tan and federation of free workers) seem to have been accepted with even fewer citations. The organization that my subject founded (federation of free farmers) is also already in wikipedia. Many thanks for your advice and help. --Kindergartendad (talk) 14:17, 28 January 2023 (UTC)

Please excuse the long answer; I aim to be thorough.
Inline citations allow readers to more easily and quickly verify for themselves what you have written.
Using existing articles—many of which are subpar—as examples a common trap, so much so an essay called WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS has been written about it. Good and featured articles like Larry Itliong or Margaret Bondfield tend to be better examples because they have definitely been reviewed (albeit many years ago in some cases).
Bondfield's article also illustrates something people forget when they're rushing to write an article: you don't control it, and everything goes on there, good or bad. Bondfield's article discusses her accomplishments and her shortcomings and failures.
Your documentary and your book are controlled by you, but anybody can edit Wikipedia. You will have zero control over the article. If the possibility that someone could pull up an old (or some far future) newspaper article criticizing your father, add it to Wikipedia, while you can do nothing but watch is extremely unpleasant, you should consider how much you really want a Wikipedia article about him.
Thanks for reading this long answer, and hope it helped. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 09:05, 29 January 2023 (UTC)

Thanka for your thorough response. It is most helpful and I will follow your advise. Kindergartendad (talk) 12:32, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

One final thing. How do I delete my entire draft? I just erased what I've written but it seems the draft page still exists. Thanks again. Kindergartendad (talk) 13:00, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Changing passive voice to active voice

Hi, I saw on your profile page that you said that you often change "passive voice sentences into active voice". I agree this is helpful to improve readability as measured with the Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease score. However, I have a small problem with it. I wrote about it recently to a colleague so I copy what I had said to her:

WP has an interesting guideline on "words to watch": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Words_to_watch#Unsupported_attributions. There is a section in there on Weasel words: Weasel words are words and phrases aimed at creating an impression that something specific and meaningful has been said, when in fact only a vague or ambiguous claim has been communicated. A common form of weasel wording is through vague attribution, where a statement is dressed with authority, yet has no substantial basis.

Words to watch: some people say, many scholars state, it is believed/regarded/considered, many are of the opinion, most feel, experts declare, it is often reported, it is widely thought, research has shown, science says, scientists claim, it is often said, officially, is widely regarded as, X has been described as Y ...

This is important for when you convert passive voice to active voice and introduce a noun that wasn't there before. Passive voice: "xx is regarded as difficult". Active voice: "Scholars regard xx as difficult". Then it falls under the weasel word guidance as not being verifiable. It's tricky. Just raising this to be be aware of. Any solutions or guidance on this? EMsmile (talk) 11:34, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Great question, @EMsmile:! I don't really have great solutions or great guidance to go with it, though. I sometimes use {{by whom}} on sentences like the ones from your example or just leave them alone if I don't think it's a huge effort.
From my personal experience, the enforcement or execution of the weasel word guideline is more nuanced that the text of the guideline makes it out to be. I tagged what I felt to be an unclear sentence in Actuary (Special:Diff/988918883), and the person who brought that article to Featured Article status reverted my edit, essentially saying that the text of the article accurately reflected the cited reference. At the risk of wildly extrapolating from a single incident, I infer that if the reliable secondary source itself is a bit "weasel-y" (and absent another one that could clarify the matter), enwp can be, too.
Tangent aside, I usually only change sentences where the subject is clear, and rewording it won't sacrifice (too much) clarity. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 21:35, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, this is interesting information for me! EMsmile (talk) 10:05, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

How can I create a page and post my written publisher? --Gatwech Wal Jiek (talk) 16:25, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

That requires a great amount of skill and technical knowledge of how [the English-language] Wikipedia works. Improve existing articles first. We have over six million of them, most of them in poor shape. After you gain enough experience to give you the required skills and knowledge, then show the Teahouse the three best sources you have on your proposed article subject and ask if the subject meets criteria for a standalone article. (If writing about yourself, please first read why an article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing, take some time, and think about it.) If the Teahouse doesn't think it will work, spend your precious time on more fruitful endeavours. Hope that helps, Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 22:06, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

You mean 10% of 3:00 isn't :30? :D Valereee (talk) 15:58, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

Please excuse the serious reply to a jovial comment: I was honestly hoping for a demonstration of candidate's copyright knowledge through a concrete example. It seemed to be a concern in the last RfA (two questions by two different users, an oppose by a third), and the other two main concerns have been addressed (Tamzin's BLP concerns, TonyBallioni and other opposers' conduct concerns). Instead, I learned about the 10% rule myself (I don't upload non-free content) and happened to help candidate fix an error. I can read a room (or at least would like to think I can...sometimes): clearly, even if candidate's copyright knowledge were a concern, the community trusts her to be open to feedback from more experienced users or admin and to change her behavior accordingly. Plus, I'm not eloquent. No amount of effort I spend figuring out how to word my last question will get the information I want, I think. This is good enough. Absent that, I believe my close to be in line with the spirit, intent, and letter of WP:RMCI. Specifically, the closing instructions there emphasizes that consensus is not a vote and asks the closer to consider consensus broader than the usually narrow slice of the community who participates in RM discussions. That broader consensus includes policy that have site-wide support, such as WP:COMMONNAME cited in my close. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 21:00, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Eatingbugs (17:10, 15 November 2023)

Hi! I was wondering if it’s okay to update the “access-date:” parameter in citation templates? like, if the url is still live and the listed access date is from a long time ago, is it acceptable to update that date to let others know it’s still working properly? Thanks --Eatingbugs (talk) 17:10, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

It depends. Webpages are dynamic. For example, let's say a webpage back in 2015 lists members of a band, and that list was subsequently removed from the webpage though the URL and other info remains. If the list is supporting the text of Wikipedia article, then you'd want to keep the access date at 2015 (and maybe add an archive URL), even though the page still exists.
