Clarification sought on use of Talk pages to resolve edit disputes

I wonder whether you are able to help on this.
For the first time I am trying to resolve a dispute with another editor by discussion, following the procedure recommended on the page, Dispute Resolution. To start this I posted on the other editor's talk page, explaining I wished to initiate a discussion, and he replied briefly on my talk page. The discussion is now likely to become quite detailed and extensive, so if we continue in this fragmented manner it will be difficult for anyone else to follow. Should we continue on a single talk page, e.g. mine, with each of us adding new posts (or editing the previous one) or should we transfer the discussion to the talk page of the material in dispute? --Socialambulator (talk) 11:49, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

WP on hand-held devices

In an earlier exchange of views (apropos of info-boxes – pax!), you mentioned how WP looks on hand-held devices. May I ask for your thoughts on a related matter? I have lately been PR-ing Description of the Western Isles of Scotland, and commented "On my screen (a smallish one) the pictures after [xxx] cause a four-inch gap of white space before [yyy]." My smallish screen is a desktop affair, not a hand-held device, and I wonder:

  • is it helpful to comment on white space in layouts when WP appears on so many different-sized screens?
  • are there any guidelines for placement of images with hand-held devices in mind?

Some hlist help

I've been busy reimplementing {{Compact ToC}} to use hlists. The sandbox shows what I've got already, which almost perfectly matches the old behaviour; however, I'm having difficulty getting centring working (see the test cases). Any thoughts? Richard Wagner was born on 22 May 1813, a reason to celebrate. His article is up for FAC.

  • I suggested an infobox, in my sandbox, please look. How would I start a new line for the translation of a title?
  • I suggested template lang, and even "permitted" to add it to Wagner, - do terms get marked the first time or every time?

Timeline

I like the timeline concept in Wagner. How would that be applied to {{Infobox Bach composition}}, more than one entry possible for both "composed" and "performed"? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:33, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

I use it in BWV 18, but it doesn't show right because the template expects date_composed and location_composed. I am not sure how to change the template. The equivalent field in {{Infobox person}} looks complicated ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:25, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
I have now 4 performances in BWV 82 which will be on the Main page tomorrow, please check. There is a "–" showing because of "location", I am not sure how to get rid of it, chaging the template, without creating a mess. (edit conflict) The problem here is that you're putting a timeline inside another timeline. {{Infobox Bach composition}} expects two parameters, |date_performed= and |location_performed=, which are then fed into {{Timeline-event}}. However, in Ich habe genug, BWV 82, you're leaving |location_performed= blank but passing a plainlist (containing four {{Timeline-event}}s) through |date_performed=. If you want to show multiple performances, I think that you need a separate parameter which accepts ready-processed data, and which doesn't attempt to do further processing on it. --Redrose64 (talk) 18:20, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. More than five years ago you concluded one bit of Wikipedia talk: Persondata (where the Template talk redirects) regarding use of template {{Persondata}} in joint biography.

I have skimmed the archives and cross-referenced the five-year-old with two more recent discussions at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Persondata#Joint biography. The latest is one year old, concluding with Rich Farmbrough's suggestion that multiple templates should be completed because they do no harm as far as we know.

COI, QRPedia

hi pigsonthewing, i usually have big respect for what you do around wikipedia and write in wikipedia. but in the case of QRPedia, it would be nice, if you would stop edit the article QRPedia. as you state yourself that you "are one of the persons behind QRPedia", this might be perceived as a clear conflict of interest. as you know the turmoil around QRPedia, it might be wise to let people work on this article, who are not as deeply involved as you are. i'm leaving this notice here, because Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents to request an editor block suggests to discuss it first here. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 23:36, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

No, it's not blatantly anything. This whole mess is a fog of suspicions and half-truths, encouraged by WMUK failing to act when it needed to and by your COI editing of this article. Maybe the whole QRpedia issue was innocent, maybe it's not true that you have to "pay a consultant to get your town covered on Wikipedia". However the actions of some WMUK members since these issues first arose, and their failure to defuse the issue when it was trivial, have now created an atmosphere of suspicion as to just what was going on. non-infoboxes, but *boxes

I understand the concept of the Infobox, and happy to see them, but i feel the need to complain about the apparently random naming, for i have found: Campaignbox, chembox, drugbox, Geobox, hockeybox, infobox, Kent_College_Infobox, Mtnbox, navbox, Pfam_box, Planetbox, Pwcompanybox, Quote_box, Reactionbox, starbox, superherobox, Superteambox, taxobox, WPMIXInfobox, and wrugbybox. Note i mention the "infobox" as distinct from "Infobox". I feel that making up new names for an Infobox is sabotage against sharing the data in the boxes, because in the search for the "Infobox" on a topic, "superherobox" is going to be missed.

I'd also like to rail against mentioning in the <comment> tag that a specific {{Infobox template was used, as a text search for the "{{Infobox" header will trip up on that mention.

Also, there is random use of the "|" divider, sometimes many on one line, some at the end of a line, some at the beginning of a line, and this makes parsing somewhat difficult if you are trying to not ignore the "\n" used inappropriately too.

I am also not fond of the nesting of {{ }} in each other, perhaps {2, {3, or {{ and {{{ can be used? I can parse the {{ blah {{ foo {{ blarrg }} bar }} bloof }} (i did not write Template:Blarrg in that nest, wikipedia added it there) out of the page ok, but the nesting gives me the crawly skin that something is going to go wrong with an unclosed }} somewhere, because after all, there's already unclosed "{{Infobox" within <comment></comment>.

      • Showing useful diffs for edits of claims (they’re currently empty)
      • Automatic comments for editing of claims (there are currently none)
      • Ability to add items to claims by their ID
      • Better handling of deleted properties
      • More results in the entity selector (that’s the thing that lets you select properties, items and so on) so you can add everything and not just the first few matches that are shown
    • We’re still working on the issue that sometimes editing of certain parts of items or properties isn’t possible. If you’re running into it try to reload the page and/or change the URL to the www. version or the non-www. version respectively.
    • Deployment on all other Wikipedias is currently planned for March 6 (a note to the Village Pumps of all affected projects will follow soon)

Wikidata

You been monitoring the developments of it? I see a bot is creating entries on wikidata so the interlinks will no longer me needed. I understand the next phase will be listing data for infoboxes. Any idea if there is a plan to have a single infobox for all wikipedias feeding off the same data? That would be a good idea I think but I'm not sure people are willing to give them up in favour of something centralized.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 11:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Language templates

  • I just noticed your (cough) discussion with Ryulong about language templates here. The templates wrap the enclosed text in lang="(whatever)" HTML tags. The effect of this is to (1) tell the browser what language is enclosed, so the browser can use an appropriate font, and (2) improve accessibility by telling screen readers what language to read.
  • To explain (1): (a) Japanese encoded in Shift JIS but without the proper HTML language tags is usually displayed as garbage, as the browser usually can't guess what language it's encoded in, (b) some Chinese and Japanese characters share the same Unicode code points (same character codes), but the Chinese and Japanese versions of the character are noticeably different, so the lang tag is needed here, so that the correct font is used. (c) Latin characters embedded in Japanese text look really gross unless the Latin characters are wrapped in the proper language tags, because the Latin characters included with standard Japanese fonts are really gross looking. The special templates for Japanese and Chinese tag the Japanese- and extended Latin-character parts separately so that they are displayed with appropriate (nice-looking) fonts. If your PC doesn't have the special Japanese fonts that come with Japanese Windows then maybe this is not a problem for you. Does that explain it sufficiently? All non-English text in this Wikipedia (and non-base-language text on others) requires a lang attribute, regardless of the font or characters used, per the W3C's HTML specifications, and as I explained in that discussion.   • Ryulong's right: Romanizations are the English-language equivalent of foreign-language words, and are read by screen readers as English. "Tokyo" and "Kyoto" are English-language romanizations, they are not foreign-language words. Complex diacritics are a different story: some POV-pushers on Wikipedia will tell you that French, German, and even Vietnamese names of people and places are really English—and so it's OK to use them in the body of articles, or even in article titles, without templates—which is nonsense. By way of example: Recently the Vietnamese government switched to using only romanized versions of names of people and places in English—so now all major English newspapers (inside or outside Vietnam) and all major encyclopedias use only romanized versions of Vietnamese names without exception. However, the POV pushers are systematically creating articles that don't have romanized versions of names either in the article title or the article body—they use only Vietnamese names in article title and body, and no language templates—and they are stacking RfMs and eliminating romanization such that it is surely impossible for somebody with a screen reader to read the articles. Looks OK to me, except that you've hard-coded a link to List of Bach cantatas and the template is used on articles about compositions by composers other than Bach. Best, perhaps, to move the legend to a separate page. See the "legend" link on Netherton Tunnel Branch Canal for an example.

Help with template variable

Hello, I've contacted you as I've found your name on the list of WP:templates. I have created a new award I desperately need assistance with in its template. template sandbox because looking here advanced templates i think the answer to my dilemma is in there but my coding background is limited. What I would like is a variable added to the usage format of the template such as a 'revert count=' or just 'count=' and you can say 3,4,5,6,etc. and dependent on that returns the string i put in the template such as; 3 lousy reverts were exchanged, 4 combative reverts were exchanged, 5 heroic reverts were exchanged. Hi Pigsonthewing, I've been trying to update and expand Template:Infobox monastery to make it look like what is proposed on it's Discussion page, but I've got little or no idea how to do it. How can I do it? Can I just copy and paste certain sections from Template: Infobox church? Other than updating the template documentation, what else do I need to take account of?     • The list of available properties is growing and a whole bunch of new ones are being discussed

    • Items by cat helps you find missing items in a certain Wikipedia category
    • A few more additions to d:Wikidata:Tools that you should have a look at if you’re editing statements

Tourism in Kosovo

Hi there POTW. You probably don't realise the problems you caused me personally on Tourism in Kosovo when you reverted me. Although your statement that I should discuss changes is technically correct, ordinarily it should have been the other party that tried for consensus first given that his edit - despite providing new material - radically amended the article to a form that would not be acceptable and could easily land an editor with an WP:ARBMAC warning (as I have been on since 2012). The Balkans are a sensitive issue, Kosovo doubly so. There are two reasons I cannot discuss changes here, the first is because it is impossible to hold a discussion with account whose catalogue is this in full. The second is because I am aware of Kosovo-based policies as an experienced editor and it would not take an administrator versed in dealing with Balkan-issues long to establish that removal of the Kosovo-template is a major blooper. It was created precisely as a disclaimer so as not to broach the political elements which are the elephant in the room - to proponents of Kosovan independence, Kosovo is a state; to opponents, it remains a Serbian province subject to UN Res 1244. As editors, we are neither allowed to present "Kosovo is a country, the newest country in Europe blah-blah-blah" any more than "Kosovo is a Serbian province held by rebels in breach of UN 1244 blah-blah" but these are the two actual standpoints over which world nations are split. Much of the rest of the other user's editing pertained to this sensitive issue.

Be that as it may, I have taken into consideration your summary which acknowledged a good faith contribution and it is visible that a lot of information was added. To this end, I have on this occasion restored the neutrally-worded version along with the extra material provided by MarigonaK. I think (99% sure) I have restored everything. If not it is only because the process of handling two such different revisions is difficult and never did I know when installing Safari what a nuisance that browser is. I never intended to wipe out the masses of statistics when restoring my edits - that happened by itself. It has a mind of its own and my Explorer works like absolute trash, that's the reason my summaries ALL contain missing letters (when using Explorer) from where it fails to register and my typing is too far ahead. There must be corrupted files in this laptop. Either way, I was just writing to let you know that my intentions really are in good faith and if there is anything I can do to improve the article, just tell me - I will definitely look into it, it's better than mass-reverting which brings us back to square one. As for the editor, yes I am 100% in agreement with you that all users should extend the hand of friendship, I don't suspect this is a bad-faith editor but I have this strange inclination that the person with the account is not new and that we won't see another contribution from it. Well, i must say that we have a little problem over there. Shuaip Pasha`s House - Almost half of that stub is identical copyvio from here. Then, article needs inline citations to verify content. Then you should use Kosovo note on it, and then article names, like Prizrenska Bistrica and League of Prizren, instead of error red links. Only then article should be linked with the rest of wiki content. Please, as i understand that you are taking care of that new group of editors, try to help them to follow established wiki guidelines about neutrality and WP:AT. I have already edited more then several articles in order to present the way articles should look like. But if other editors should run over all new artices and fix them, we are not on a good way. If you wish, i can talk to them about errors in their articles, but i wanted to tell you, as i understood that you where the one who tough them ?
