Template:Ref expand

Hi I created this as I believed we needed a template like Bare URLs to encourage editors to add full citations not the just the websites. Can you improve this properly and sort out the documentation? Music field of template "Infobox television episode"

You made a recent edit to "Dance with Somebody (Glee)" that changed the list of songs in the infobox's Music field from being separated by the HTML "<br>" linebreak tag to using the Plainlist template. There's only one problem: the documentation for the "Infobox television episode" template specifically instructs that the songs should be separated by the linebreak tag.

I'm perfectly happy to change to Plainlist wherever appropriate, and to set up template fields so they use it. However, the documentation should call for it, or at least not specifically to call for <br>. As long as the documentation does specify, that's what I expect to be used. Is there some other place that universally calls for Plainlist usage instead of the normal line breaks in such template fields, that trumps template documentation? It appears that {{Works by Jack Vance}} should be renamed too. It's one of merely two that begin with "Works by". Category:Speculative fiction author navigational boxes

Template:US-president-row

One of the recent changes to {{US-president-row}} is causing the template to come up as lacking a references section. ( Cite error: There are <ref> tags on this page, but the references will not show without a {{Reflist|group=n}} template or a<references group="n"/> tag; see the help page. These are apparently the <ref group="n" name="num" /> entries. The Royal Mail contradictions have been resolved, but the Moulton article still says "(my emphasis)", with no indication of whether or when that actually happened, and no mention on the Pashley article. Template:End date

I've just added a new parameter |notime= to {{end date}}, allowing the generation of valid microformats without displaying the time 23:59:59 in the article text. I thought you might want to know. They do work fine, but there are scary warning messages about whole end-dates needing a time as well as a date. I don't know enough about μF to know whether that's the case or not; reading around on the μF site, it looks like it's to do with the dtend inclusivity issue, which you and Tantek Çelik have written about.
The μF wiki makes it look like this is no longer an issue; is that the case? I must admit I'm now more confused than I was before... —OwenBlacker (Talk) 19:30, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

I appreciate that the replacement/"merger" of this template was suggested by a number of editors. But it's unclear to me how the editor experience has been improved by replacing an easily-remembered 8-character template with a more complex template that's four times as long, and yet yields the same text result as the shorter one did. (In fact the replacement template is actually a bit longer than the text it yields.) At any rate, I wanted to thank you for your effort in creating this template; it did save some time while it was around.--Arxiloxos (talk) 16:49, 9 July 2012 (UTC)

QRpedia / dealing with renamed articles and/or change of url syntax

Hi Pigsonthewing, I have two questions about the QRpedia project: 1) Does it in some way address the issue that an article might be moved and no longer be accessible afterward under the old name? What happens to the interlanguage links if that happens? 2) If the Wikimedia Foundation were for some reason to change the URL of Wikipedia articles, e.g. to .../wiki2/Dog instead of .../wiki/Dog, would QRpedia be able to change the redirect accordingly? I'm asking because we received an email today at info-de where someone asked about the reliability of Wikipedia URLs (he wants to create QR codes to illustrate plates in front of trees with links to the corresponding Wikipedia article, and I thought that this might perhaps be better handled via QRpedia than through QR codes linking directly to the article). Quick microformat question

Hey Andy, I'm planning to display time-dependent content in the WikiMiniAtlas soon (historical borders etc.). I need a way to figure out a time/timespan associated with the subject of the current article (to present the correct dataset). Event microformats come to mind. Do you have an idea of how common they are on historical articles in WP? --Dschwen 16:57, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

You'd be looking for the presence of templates in the family of {{Start date}} and {{End date}}, in infoboxes which emit hCalendar microformats. I have a current BOTREQ (which I mentioned to you the other day) to complete the job of converting such dates to use those templates, which will increase their prevalence significantly. Also, note the caveat, in their documentation, about their use being problematic for pre-Gregorian era dates. Please let me know if I can help further. Point coordinate controversy

Hey Andy, I ran into User:Tom Morris at the end of the unconference, where he casually mentioned that he'd like to replace a ton of coordinate templates with direct links to OSM. I gues that qualifies him to be thrown under a bus by you ;-). I argued a bit with him, showing him the WikiMiniAtlas (which of course he did not know). He brought the M25 motorway example and I showed him how it is shown as a line on the WMA. Anyhow, there is a way we can find a compromise, leaving the point coordinates in the article, but adding a parameter for an OSM ID to the template. This could be passed on to the geohack, enhancing the display on Google Maps and Bing (I personally do not care about making those look good, but apparently other users do). If an OSM ID parameter is passed to the geohack we could then generate Google Maps links that are wrapped using a script that extracts the OSM object and creates a KML file from it to be displayed in GM. Maybe it is still the excitement form the conference that is making me think this could be a solution to make everybody happy... --Dschwen 01:05, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Sure, of course in addition to coordinates. I also talked to an OSM guys who said that OSM IDs were a reliable and permanent mapping (contrary to what the OSM wiki says). --Dschwen 05:27, 16 July 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, absolutely. For un-OSM-mapped objects we now have the Attached KML template (maybe not the ideal solution, but at least it works for now), and sometime we might get time dependent maps. Did you talk to the mapstory.org people? --Dschwen 13:09, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

QRpedia article template error

Template:Derechobox – I wanted to drop by not as a US Roads member but as a Trop Cyclones member for a moment that this came to my attention and since I know you're good enough with templates, I'd like some advice if you think this is redundant in general to a severe storm infobox. The guy who made it also made Late July 2012 North American derecho, which uses said box. To say the least, I ain't happy that he made his own color and intensity scheme which is an OR in itself, but I'd just like an opinion from you. British Boxing Hall of Fame page

Hi Andy

Thanks for your comments and advice regarding the dispute over the British Boxing Hall of Fame page(s) and apologies for not following protocol.

It is very frustrating as it seems to be an open and shut case and example of trademark theft. I understand that in the real world though that things are not always that simple.

If you don't mind I would like to go over our position in a little more detail:

OUR CREDENTIALS

Due to the use of the sensitive use of the word British in our name, we are recognised as being 'preeminent in our field' by the Department of the Secretary of State for Sport. All companies using the word British in the title need to be vetted and have to supply a letter of endorsement from their sport's governing body -

THE OTHER ORGANISATION

The other organisation registered its domain names and company name in July 2012 but oddly claim to have a history going back to 2008. This is not true and they have no evidence to substantiate this. They have never staged events under the banner of the British Boxing Hall of Fame.

They claim to have a list of supporters/ambassadors but really that is no great achievement as we can do the same on an even higher level.

The real issue is that they are cynically attempting to steal our identity. We are already undertaking action with regard to company names and their online presence but the wikipedia article is particularly irritating because of its high search engine ranking.

I hope this is all a little clearer now.

I haven't had a chance to check it for neutrality yet, but one thing I am concerned about is the resume-esque nature of the article. The career section in particular is written in bullet format. Wiki Loves Public Art

Hi Andy,

I read about your cool idea about Wolvopedia on Maketheshift (apparently blocked here...) and wanted to tell you about my project, Wiki Loves Public Art (WLPA), and suggest to you the possibility to cooperate a little bit. WLPA is inspired by Wiki Loves Monuments and will focus, as the name suggests, on public artworks. The pictures will be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and even though some basic rules will be the same for all countries participating, the contest will have a rather federative approach and there can be adjustment locally so that it works better. The project is lead by Wikimedia Sweden in partnership with Europeana.

What I would suggest is to organize a local version of WLPA in Wolverhampton in connection to the larger international contest during May 2013. On top of the actual photo contest it would be great to have side activities to invite people to write about the objects, organize photo scavenger hunts etc. To do this together I think would create a bit more headlines for your project and a great way to get people involved; and for me Wolverhampton would be a great pilot city to start with to see how the concept works in the UK. I have also been in contact with Harry Mitchell about a similar thing for Coventry, but I am not sure if he is interested or not, and in any case I believe that there are many benefits with having two pilot cities instead of just one.

I'm not sure I have time to be a national coordinator, though. If we get the go-ahead for Wolverhampton, then I'll sign up for that. You might want to talk to User:Rock drum about Coventry. WikiProject Public Art is just a WikiProject with public art as its theme, created to coordinate the work regarding public art on English Wikipedia.
Wiki Loves Public Art on the other hand is a photo contest very similar to Wiki Loves Monuments that will take place during one month every year (May 2013 will be the first!). The goals of the contest are to get as many good photos of public artworks as possible to Wikimedia Commons from all over the world; to attract both new and old contributors to go out with their cameras; and to increase cooperation between the Wikimedia chapters. I am working with the international coordination of Wiki Loves Public Art and thanks to our cooperation with Europeana we have access to legal staff that can help us figure out what we can and cannot do, we have a small budget to support events and the national teams organizing Wiki Loves Public Art. Europeana can also help us find GLAM partners that have the data that we need (and can help us to convince the GLAMs to release the data under a free license so that we can use it on Wiki(p|m)edia).
