DYK for E. S. Brusky[edit]

On 1 January 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article E. S. Brusky, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after accepting the job of team physician for the Green Bay Packers in 1962, E. S. Brusky was not paid a salary for at least the first nine years of his tenure? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/E. S. Brusky. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, E. S. Brusky), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I[edit]

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

I approved the DYK. Not directly related, but the article says: "After the reorganization, Jonet was named the team's secretary, a post he would remain in until 1951" However, the Packers.com source says: "He was elected to the executive committee and also treasurer on Jan. 29, 1935."[1] Not sure if the article needs changing, or the source is incorrect.—Bagumba (talk) 14:58, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ethics Workshop Participation Request[edit]

Hi! We're conducting a series of participatory workshops with Wikipedia editors, administrators, researchers, and Wikimedia employees to discuss, and hopefully improve, Wikipedia's structures for online research (see meta research page). In an effort to get the right people in the room to discuss these topics, I'm reaching out here to see if you are interested in participating as an active administrator. We'd work with you to ensure this workshop can fit into your schedule, but are targeting end of April/early May. I'm happy to discuss any of these topics further here or on our talk page. Lions Pro Bowlers[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that I've been working on User:Hey man im josh/List of Detroit Lions Pro Bowl selections, based on your List of Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl selections. I'm expecting to wait at least a week, maybe two, and will be DYK nomming it when I do so. Trying to line it up so that I can get those DYK points in the third round of the WikiCup =P Hey man im josh (talk) 20:17, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man im josh, looks awesome! Glad I started a trend. I am contemplating List of Green Bay Packers All-Rookie Team selections and List of Green Bay Packers All-Pro selections for some future day hahaha. I told BeanieFan11 this last year, if you work on any WP:PACKERS content, I'll offer up unlimited, time-efficient reviews! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 22:29, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I seen that! I'm not sure how to feel because of the mess that is the various selectors (tho I'd end up settling on what the HoF uses). What do you think of the most Pro Bowls section I added? I found myself wondering who tops the list when I was looking at yours and ended up settling on a table for it like with the annual statistics lists.
As for working on and promoting Packers content... I'll look it over, but as a self respecting Lions fan (we have those!?), I find it to be an impossible task. I justify reviewing as looking for ways to criticize Packers stuff! Hey man im josh (talk) 22:44, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey man im josh Haha I am contemplating adding the second table. Good info that isn't easily parsed from the main table.
Just work on players who played for the Pack and Lions. Jamaal Williams, T. J. Lang, Tobin Rote, Jug Girard, Ron Kramer, the list is endless! Haha! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 23:03, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm gonna Lions even harder now. God I love PFR, I had no idea that that that type of search existed. I'd definitely encourage you to add that summary table, but I'm a sucker for those. My threshold for inclusion was 5 Pro Bowlers with the team, which feel is a pretty good number for this. It would mean, if you were to implement one, that your table would have 14 entries in it. Hey man im josh (talk) 13:30, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hahaha well you convinced me, I added it. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 17:21, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Earlier All-Star game?[edit]

Hey Gonzo. I've been doing some work to prove Dutch Clark was GM for 3 years and HC for 2 years (tough to find something stating he was GM in 1936), and I stumbled across a few things. I've found mentions of Detroit, champions for the 1935 season, playing an exhibition game against a set of All-Stars (see this section) on January 1, 1936. I found a few links from articles here: link 1, link 2, link 3 (page 16).

I did some Googling to try to find more to support this, but ultimately had to turn to Newspapers.com, where I clipped these:

Any thoughts on this? It looks like the "All-Star Game" may have started sooner than 1939. Hey man im josh (talk) 20:20, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also noting that several Packers players appear to have played (including Don Hutson). Hey man im josh (talk) 20:22, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Damn, Dutch Clark apparently wrote a poem about the game! Hey man im josh (talk) 20:27, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey man im josh Chicago College All-Star Game started in 1934. Is that was this is referencing? « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:12, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. I am at a loss. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:14, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My guess is that these games weren't sancitoned? The HoF calls 1939 the first Pro Bowl. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:16, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's definitely confusing... there was a match vs college All-stars in September 1936, while sources distinctly state, and mentioned a number of, NFL players (including several Packers).
I've actually corrected the HoF a scary number of times... they get things wrong way too often, to the point I'm not comfortable recommending them as a reliable source, but they're still right enough to be used as a reference (in my opinion). I'm not kidding when I say I'm averaging at least two submissions a month for corrections over the last 6-12 months.
I wanted to dump that info on your talk page because I found a lot of it mid to late day today and may not get to it til Monday, figured if anybody else on Wiki digs into early NFL as much I do, it'd be you. I'm wondering if the 1939 Pro Bowl was the first sort of sponsored one? Based on some stuff I found searching for those sources, I believe the 1936 match against college All-stars was sponsored. But perhaps the pro one wasn't? I'm not sure... but there's definitely something to figure out I think. Hey man im josh (talk) 23:41, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Funny, it's already mentioned here 1935 Detroit Lions season#All-Star Game: Lions 33, NFL All-Stars 0. Not really finding much on the game except the AP and UPI reports. I'll keep digging. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:35, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It feels like enough smoke and information to believe it was an all-star game. But that would also lead me to believe there should be a couple more between that and the first one we have listed. Hey man im josh (talk) 15:46, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Clip 1, Clip 2, Clip 3. A little more info in my perusing. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:48, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Link 2 is absolutely perfect to establish that it was an all-star team of other pros. I think there's enough to white an article about! Hey man im josh (talk) 15:53, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Link 1 seems to establish the roster well enough. I sent an email to Cliff Christl to see if he can shed some light on pre-1939 All-Star Games. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:58, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea! Hopefully they're quick to get back to you and have some insight. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:03, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can we briefly talk? Former Packer[edit]

I can be reached at phon en#. Thanks Wisc1999 (talk) 18:06, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HoFer by franchise[edit]

Hey Gonzo. One of my very first article creations back in the day was List of Detroit Lions in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which I've decided I want to work on and get up to featured list status. I'm using List of Green Bay Packers in the Pro Football Hall of Fame as an example to build off, and I was curious, did you add life-time All-Pro selections, or just selections while a player was with the team? My gut says to use the selections and awards received while with the team, as opposed to full career accomplishments. Hey man im josh (talk) 18:49, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man im josh, full career. For me, it made sense because the HoF recognizes full career accomplishments, even if it does assign a primary team for the player. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 20:07, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I'm leaning towards it as well at this point. Considering whether to include a column for career length to help differentiate when they were with the team, but not sure... it needs some thinking over from my PoV, but hey, at least I'm making progress on it :) Hey man im josh (talk) 20:16, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
All that said, I added a lot from when it went to FLC back in 2008 or so. So maybe a new discussion will provide clarity on what would be helpful for these types of lists. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 22:51, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

TFA[edit]

Thank you today for Bob Mann (American football), introduced (in 2020): "Bob Mann was an American football player in the late 1940s and early 1950s. He was a star end (wide receiver in today's terminology) for the University of Michigan, where he teamed up with future Hall of Famer Len Ford to form a dynamic pass-catching duo. He entered the NFL with the Detroit Lions, where he played for two seasons. After a salary dispute, he was released and signed with the New York Yanks (not to be confused with the baseball team), although he never played for the team in the regular season. After being released by the Yanks, he claimed NFL owners blackballed him by all agreeing to not sign him. After a few months, the Green Bay Packers signed Mann, where he would play parts of five seasons until a knee injury ended his career. Mann would go on to become a lawyer in the Detroit area until he died in 2006. The quick overview above would make it seem like Mann was just another college football star who played in the NFL for a few seasons before professional football became what it is today. However, Mann's legacy goes far and above his statistics and physical abilities. Mann was a black player in football during a time of great racial prejudices. He broke the color barrier for both the Lions and Packers, he was cut by the Lions for not taking a pay cut (and possibly for supporting a boycott by the black community of a beer that he was a spokesperson for), even though he led the NFL in receiving yards the prior season. He was (arguably) blackballed by the NFL for his race and for not agreeing to take the pay cut from the Lions. Then he played for Green Bay, a town at the time that had only a handful of black residents. He has been called a pioneer for the dignified way he handled himself is such difficult situations."! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:26, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

List of Los Angeles Rams starting quarterbacks possible FL[edit]

Hi there,

I had just recently discovered that List of Green Bay Packers starting quarterbacks was promoted to featured list status just a few days ago. I would like to congratulate you for a job well done. I actually had an idea to do promote List of Los Angeles Rams starting quarterbacks to featured list status, but I wasn't sure how to format it so that it would become one. I looked at List of Los Angeles Chargers starting quarterbacks, but it was difficult to arrange the list season by season due to the Ram's lengthy team history and like the Packers, it is hard to find win-loss record by starting quarterback prior to 1950. So your list gives me a template to follow for a team like the Rams that have a long history.

I may try to promote the list sometime this year or next year. I'm still trying to get a few Oscar ceremony lists promoted. I will think about it heavily. Birdienest81talk 20:20, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Birdienest81, good luck! Yeah, I think this layout is better than the other two starting QB lists. Easier and more straightforward. Good luck! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:21, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft navbox naming[edit]

Hey Gonzo. I was looking at the draft navboxes, specifically the naming scheme, and I noticed an inconsistency. Following your lead of moving the Green Bay Packers navboxes to the format of "Green Bay Packers YYYY NFL draft picks", I moved the Lions ones to "Detroit Lions YYYY NFL draft picks". I noticed today however that there seems to be a naming scheme that 6 other navboxes follow.

Looking at Category:National Football League 2023 draft navigational boxes, most of the titles are bunched up MascotYearDraftPicks, while six others leave out "NFL" from the title of the navbox. Examples:

  • Arizona Cardinals 2023 draft navbox
  • Atlanta Falcons 2023 draft navbox
  • Indianapolis Colts 2023 draft navbox
  • Los Angeles Chargers 2023 draft navbox
  • Los Angeles Rams 2023 draft navbox
  • Tennessee Titans 2023 draft navbox

Do you think we should have left "NFL" out of the titles when we made these moves? Hey man im josh (talk) 12:48, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey man im josh, where possible, I am trying to stay consistent with "NFL draft". My preference would be for them all to be named that way, and my hope was that I could possibly get that moving. I also want the naming convention for all the templates be standardized moving forward, so we don't keep having all the redirects in the MascotYearDraftPicks format. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:04, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense to me. I'll help chip away at them over time. Hey man im josh (talk) 16:31, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
