Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
  • Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.

Technical news

  • When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
  • Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)

Paper Mario four award[edit]

Wanted to reply, but mobile editing is wonky; would it matter any different considering how it was never an article, rather a draft through the entirety of its existence? Panini!🥪 21:21, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Panini!, I haven't been very active lately, so my recommendation would be to start a new section on WT:FOUR laying out why you think the article meets the criteria and see what people say. It you can show diffs or explain how you started the article with the first original encyclopedic content, most people tend to be pretty relaxed with the "rules". Nice work on the article! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 19:45, 2 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team articles by quality log[edit]

@Gonzo fan2007: Hi there! I'm not sure if you remember what happened, but I was going through Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Role-playing game articles by quality log day by day to make a log of what articles had been deleted over time. The bot log ran fine enough for the first ten years, but as can be seen here, there was a hiccup that occurred sometime after the last edit on 9 October 2018‎ by WP 1.0 bot, and you protected the page on 6 December 2018 and removed the protection on 18 August 2019‎, and the bot resumed its activity on 26 August 2019‎. I would have assumed that the bot stopped logging for that whole time, but on its first edit back, it posted several new days and archived all the content from the several months prior, so I am wondering if it kept the log going somewhere that can still be viewed? I have a couple of other ways that I can try to reconstruct some of that information, but of course it would be more convenient to just see it the way I have been reviewing the rest of the changes if that's even possible. Anything you can tell me would help! BOZ (talk) 17:27, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BOZ, for a little background on all this, see here: Wikipedia_talk:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/Index/Archive_9#Possible_Workaround. The bot performs two tasks: updates the statistics table and updates the logs. For some reason, the bot broke and was not updating the log pages correctly. Since there was no active bot owner, the bot got blocked. As a workaround, while others were trying to fix the bot, I mass-protected all of the log pages on Wikipedia and then unblocked the bot. This way, the bot was unable to edit the log pages, where it was breaking, but could continue updating the stats tables, which are important to a lot of users. I believe that in August 2019, the bot code was replaced. I didn't really follow the discussion much after then. But if you read through that talk page link above, you should be able to see the progression of how things were done. Hope this helps! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:27, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK, gotcha. If the bot activity was not logged anywhere, I have a couple of other options I can use to at least get some of the data I am looking for. Thanks! :) BOZ (talk) 15:40, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Update on 1984 Summer Olympics medal table FLRC[edit]

Hi there,

I have made improvements to the 1984 Summer Olympics medal table regarding its reevaluation of its featured list status. Please note, I may or may not be able to work on this list until probably after September 23 or so. Also, I may need assistance from someone to make a map.

--Birdienest81talk 08:44, 8 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hey GF, I see both from edit history and from the thread above that in the past you have done work on protecting Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team pages to help identify/resolve bot issues. We are trying to resolve some issues with the bot adding non-existent cats to the log pages; if I posted here a list of pages we needed to protect, would you mind applying the protection to them? (As a first step I tried using the {{nobots}} tag, but I guess the bot is not nobots compliant) Let me know, and thanks in advance, UnitedStatesian (talk) 14:17, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi UnitedStatesian, happy to help. Let me know what you need done and why, and I can look into performing the protections. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:45, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Iyopawa Island[edit]

Hi. You removed my clarification needed tag for Iyopawa Island, which claims to be an island but also claims to be connected by a land bridge. You did this with the comment 'as Islands are still classified as islands even when they are linked to the mainland by connections such as a bridge, causeway or ford'. But a land bridge, as defined by our article land bridge, is a natural land form in no way comparable with bridges, causeways or fords, which are all man-made constructs. I'm beginning to think the problem here is an incorrect use of the term land bridge; perhaps it would be better replaced by causeway, which is what the connection appears to be on maps. I have no sources, and I'm reluctant to make such a change just on the basis of Google Maps. What do you think?. -- chris_j_wood (talk) 12:45, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Chris j wood, I'm not an expert on this, but a land bridge doesn't necessarily preclude a piece of land being an island. As an example, Adam's Bridge connects Sri Lanka, which is an island nation. If you want to pursue it further, you are welcome to. I just think most people will understand what is being conveyed in the article. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 20:41, 13 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK, finally getting back to this: here are the pages that need full protection to prevent the bot from adding a non-existent category to them:
Could you please let me know when you have applied the protection to these? Thanks so much, UnitedStatesian (talk) 18:17, 18 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi UnitedStatesian, I am not quite sure I understand why you need these protected. Is the bot actively adding the category to these pages? As an example, the bot edited here, but didn't add the category you removed. Can you help me understand what the problem is or what you are trying to accomplish with the protection? « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 17:00, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Marcus Lemonis edit request[edit]

Hi Gonzo fan2007. As a COI editor, I was wondering if you would help with improvements I am looking to make to the Marcus Lemonis article. I posted an edit request with some suggestions at Talk:Marcus Lemonis#new edit request a few days ago. I noticed you are an experienced editor who makes valuable contributions to the encyclopedia, and you have edited pages for other Marquette University alumni in the past. I would really appreciate your input. Thanks! TrevoratMarcusLemonis (talk) 13:57, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi TrevoratMarcusLemonis, thanks for reaching out. I looked over your edits and you seem to be getting the hang of it on how to edit with a COI. My only recommendation would be to create a sandbox or draft page (such as User:TrevoratMarcusLemonis/Marcus Lemonis) for the article you are working on. That way you can mold or revise the article and then make one, large COI edit request to update the article. Hopefully, this makes sense. Thanks. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:56, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aaron Rodgers[edit]

Hello! Saw your edit on Aaron Rodgers and I agree. What do you suggest I can do as an improvement to clean up some of the excess? I initially audited the page internally and removed some basic statlines and references around a month back. I am working on some NFL player articles as I come across to try to remove excess statlines and make the prose not as robotic. Thanks for all you do on here and best wishes. Red Director (talk) 20:14, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Red Director, thanks for reaching out. I honestly think the "Media appearances" would be the easiest place to start. There is a whole paragraph on his TD celebration, multiple sentences on his cameos (including a whole paragraph explaining the Key and Peele skit), etc. The "Humanitarian and charitable efforts" could also be tightened up pretty easily. As an example, I took a crack at his "Personal life". See here. Let me know if that helps. The bigger challenge will be his career. In my opinion, it needs a full rework, with a focus less on year-to-year achievements, and more of a summary of "eras" of his career. Same thing for his college career. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 20:45, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Gonzo fan2007 Nice work there! Good place to start. He is one of the rare players in NFL history where he has done some great things over the course over most of his career. The Tom Brady article is probably a good example too of where it is difficult to condense down. I think some back-to-back less notable years can be condensed definitely. There are some years where I think the section needs to stay but we can cut some excess wording. His Super Bowl years, MVP years, etc. are among what I deem notable. I think once some notable active players retire, we can all around condensing them as well. Red Director (talk) 21:01, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Red Director, the biggest difficulty is that these articles about current players aRE being written in real-time. Rodgers having a great game is big news right now, but in 20 years no one really cares. Look at Dan Marino and Steve Young; two hall of famers with sustained success over the course of their careers. They both are about a quarter of the length of Rodgers's article and have like 300 fewer citations. Heck, look at Don Hutson, the greatest WR of his time and one of the greatest ever, also a WP:GA. Hutson's article is an encyclopedic entry; Rodgers is a mini-biography. The section on his "Back-up years" could be condensed into two paragraphs, easily. Cleaning up his article is a big project, but it is definitely needed. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:54, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
