March 14[edit]

Notable or Promotional[edit]

In searching for a different article at WP, I accidentally stumbled on this page: Maine Public Employees Retirement System. With several non-links, no references or sources, is this a notable subject or mere promotional? It obviously has a serious COI. Maineartists (talk) 00:28, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I've just deleted it. Is the subject notable, or was its treatment merely promotional? Well, who cares? It didn't have the aroma of an authentic Wikipedia article. I therefore copied a distinctive string of words from it, and fed this to Google, which immediately found it both in the Wikipedia article and in this page. I added "copyright violation" to a list of crimes noted by another user, and got rid of it. When you come across something like this, first look to see if it's a copyright violation: if it is, then there's no arguing over its value. -- Hoary (talk) 07:05, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to upload article[edit]

how to upload article Tshisusu (talk) 06:45, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I note, Tshisusu, that the question immediately above is the sole edit by this username to English-language Wikipedia so far, and that the wording of your question suggests unfamiliarity with the Wikipedia of any language. So, the first step is to find some Wikipedia articles that are defective in some way -- an easy task, as defective articles are very numerous -- and, by scrupulously using and citing reliable sources, to improve those articles. When you've become at least moderately proficient in that, you can think about creating one or more entirely new articles, in such a way that they make it very clear that their subjects satisfy the requirements for notability. -- Hoary (talk) 06:56, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple Authors in a Press Release Citation[edit]

What do I? StrongALPHA (talk) 10:00, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Cite news. You can add numbers to the authors' names to list them individually.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:05, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@StrongALPHA There is also a specific template {{press release}} for press releases and copes with multiple authors using last1 / first1 etc (as do most citation templates). See link for details. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:29, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull and StrongALPHA: {{press release}} is a cleanup template, not a citation template. The citation template for press relases is {{cite press release}}. Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:47, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Victor Schmidt Oops! I was looking at the correct citation template but linked it incorrectly. Apologies. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:37, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Linking Books in References?[edit]

If a book listed in a reference has a Wikipedia article about it (in this case No Man Knows My History), should the occurance in the reference be linked? Assume the book is not mentioned in the article other than in the reference.Naraht (talk) 13:49, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. If you look at Template:cite book you will find plenty of examples of this. ColinFine (talk) 14:54, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht, there is a title-link parameter at Template:Cite book. Read the docs for more details on that. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 14:54, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Bot for MOS:CAPTIONS[edit]

Good afternoon. Is it possible to create a bot for MOS:CAPTIONS? I have corrected many pages by applying this rule, but with almost 7 million pages it's literally impossible to do them all, so I make this proposal. JackkBrown (talk) 14:09, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown, Wikipedia:Bot requests may be a good place. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:32, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: en.wiki has departments for everything, excellent! JackkBrown (talk) 14:38, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading a new version of a picture file[edit]

I'm trying to update the picture "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Logo_for_SC_United_Bantams_(PDL_franchise).jpg#file". The club uses a different logo now. I've uploaded the new file and updated the source URL, but it still shows the old picture on the page and the page that references the file. I've tried googling how to fix this, looked through the help desk archives, and the Wikipedia tutorials and haven't found anything that helps. Can someone please help me with this? Lloyd2539alex (talk) 15:25, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Lloyd2539alex: shows correctly for me. Try clearing your browser cache. Victor Schmidt (talk) 15:35, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It works! Thanks! Lloyd2539alex (talk) 15:37, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Having Trouble Submitting Article[edit]

I'm getting this notice while trying to make a page for "PPV.COM"

An automated filter has identified this edit as potentially unconstructive, so it has been disallowed. If this edit is constructive, please report this error. Disruptive behavior may result in being blocked from editing. Ppv0323 (talk) 16:02, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ppv0323 From your username, I gather that you are associated with this website. Please read conflict of interest and paid editing(which includes employment) for important information. We have articles here, not pages. You should not be directly attempting to create an article(which new accounts can't do anyway), but you may submit a draft article via Articles for Creation.
It's hard to know why you got that message without knowing your edit, but there was something inappropriate about it. Maybe an external link that's blacklisted. 331dot (talk) 16:05, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, I mean submitting a draft article. Something seems to be triggering the edit filter, which only I can see apparently? Ppv0323 (talk) 16:29, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ppv0323 I would click publish, then when you are prevented from the edit, remove a piece of your draft and try again, until you get an edit through, then you can narrow down the problem. I would start by removing all external links(including sources, for now). 331dot (talk) 16:33, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @331dot: That message is MediaWiki:Abusefilter-disallowed and the standard message when an edit fitler is set to disallow. I cannot see what specificially caused the abuse filter that disallowed to activate, since the responsible filter is private, however, the edit itself can still be seen in the public log from a different, also activated filter. @Ppv0323: For future note, false positive reports of edit fitlers go to Wikipedia:Edit filter/False positives/Reports. Victor Schmidt (talk) 16:35, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Caption not showing[edit]

Why isn't the caption I added here [1] showing in the infobox? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:54, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because there are two...
Trappist the monk (talk) 20:02, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, can't have too much of a good thing, right? Thanks. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Was told my Article for Creation was "Blatant Advertising"[edit]

Is there any way I can clean up my language better so that it gets approved? I'm trying to be as neutral as possible while describing the service. Ppv0323 (talk) 20:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Frankly, if that is your idea of being 'neutral', then no, I doubt that you will be able to do anything to get an article approved. And given both the contents of the draft, and your username, you evidently need to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:13, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Draft:PPV.COM is nowhere near suitable to be an article, it is basically a press release/puff piece.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:17, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ppv0323: Before you put any more effort into this, please make certain that your subject meets our notability requirements: see WP:NCORP. Notability is our only absolute requirement for an article. If the subject is not notable, there is nothing you can do to salvage the article (see WP:AMOUNT) and we will delete your article, wasting your time and ours. I did a brief Google search and I did not find suitable references to support notability. -Arch dude (talk) 20:32, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Good evening. Why is "Şifaiye Medrese" present twice in this caption? > "Tomb of Izz al-Din Kayka'us I in the Şifaiye Medrese (1217–1218) Şifaiye Medrese". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sivas#. JackkBrown (talk) 21:36, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Good morning, JackkBrown. At a guess, as a trivial result of the writer's sleepiness. Please title your questions informatively. -- Hoary (talk) 21:53, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Mistakes happen. Errors are sometimes caused by inappropriate changes of valid code which is no longer there so I often look for the origin instead of merely fixing the current code. "Find addition/removal" in the page history finds [2] by R Prazeres. The whole caption was added in that edit and it was just a mistake with nothing more revealed. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:04, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Now corrected. Maproom (talk) 22:52, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

i Would Like To Add A wikipedia page[edit]

This Page will Be about My Website dx4z.neocities.org Hunter Doney (talk) 22:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia doesn't have "pages" it has articles about notable topics, there is no evidence that your website would pass the guidelines at WP:GNG. Theroadislong (talk) 22:08, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hunter Doney Wikipedia is not a place for websites to tell the world about themselves. That's what social media and advertising agencies are for. 331dot (talk) 22:10, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removing an old logo from Wiki commons[edit]

My company has updated its logo and I am recommending that the old version in Wiki Commons be removed as it is no longer accurate. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Auticon_logo.jpg

What is the best approach to remove this logo? Dreevewiki2016 (talk) 23:03, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dreevewiki2016 This would be better suited for Commons' help desk. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 23:04, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, right perfect. I posted on the Wiki Commons page. However, since I have your attention, there is the same issue here on Wikipedia where this logo file needs to be removed: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Auticon_logo.png Dreevewiki2016 (talk) 23:09, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreevewiki2016 With how Commons works, if the file is deleted on Commons, the enwiki upload will also be removed. By the way, is the newer logo uploaded in any way under a compatible license? LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 23:11, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The new logo is uploaded to Wikipedia here Auticon#/media/File:Auticon-logo-2023.png
But I am unclear on how to provide acceptable license. Dreevewiki2016 (talk) 23:14, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dreevewiki2016 I shall refer you to the Commons Volunteer Response Team, then. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 23:17, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@LilianaUwU, per [3] that may not be necessary. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:19, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don't delete things like this on Commons. Just upload a new file with a new name. e.g Company Logo 2023 - X201 (talk) 09:49, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

public thanks[edit]

When I click (thank), this pops up: "Publicly send thanks?" (That seems new.)

Where are such thanks publicly visible? —Tamfang (talk) 23:51, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Tamfang: Special:Log/thanks for you and the recipient. It shows the time but not the page or edit. See more at Help:Notifications/Thanks#Confirmation. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:55, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
