Hi IP, I see you added the reference to the book yourself when you did edit. Why didn't you add the ISBN yourself when you added the reference? Please see WP:CITEHOW for how to add it in. NZFC(talk) 02:00, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I tried and FAILED when I added in the IBSN number for ref number 89 - it is now in red. I am sorry. Please fix if able. Thanks 203.132.68.1 (talk) 03:04, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again IP, problem is you are calling it IBSN, it is ISBN and to reference it you go |isbn= and then the number. The next problem is you were trying to put two in, ISBN-10 and ISBN-13. I have put the ISBN-13 in for you and corrected the error. NZFC(talk) 03:13, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Searching more accurately[edit]

Hello, I'm to get an overview for mentions of a particular compound on various Wikipedia articles. However, there are over 600 results and I only want the most relevant 20 or so. Is there some way, I could alter my search settings so that the articles that mention my search buzzwords most frequently are prioritised. So in a way, a quantitative search, not just a qualitative one of your platform. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.41.46.57 (talk) 09:07, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The search feature already tries to prioritise the results. I don't know whether number of mentions is a factor. See Help:Searching and mw:Help:CirrusSearch for features. A regular expression could be used to search for pages with multiple occurrences, e.g. geraniol insource:/[Gg]eraniol.*[Gg]eraniol/ for at least two "Geraniol" or "geraniol". You can also try to use the external https://google.com with site:en.wikipedia.org in the search field. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:48, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

change the name of article[edit]

Hi,

I can't change the name of this article : "Draft:Davidsmithite" it must be "Davidsmithite" also the link must be changed https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Davidsmithite — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ohmemam (talkcontribs) 10:33, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ohmemam: The name looks the same to me. On the assumption that what you wish is to remove the 'Draft' from the title, when you think the article is ready for mainspace, place {{subst:submit}} at the top of the draft. It will then be submitted for review. For future reference, changing the name is done by 'moving' the page via the 'more' tab at the top of the page. This will be available to you after your account has made 10 valid edits. Please do not make similar requests for help in multiple locations, and please sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 10:54, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Submission Declined[edit]

Dear all,

We have submitted a page to Wiki for Paula Reid, Adventurer. and recieved this message:

This submission is not adequately supported by reliable sources. Reliable sources are required so that information can be verified. If you need help with referencing, please see Referencing for beginners and Citing sources.

How do we know we parts of the page need referencing?

Many thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clare Walker 74 (talkcontribs) 12:03, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Clare Walker 74, you must provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that she meets the notability guidelines. It is now Wikipedia policy that biographical articles about living people must have independent verifiable references, as defined in the link, or they will be deleted. Unreferenced claims can be removed. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to her, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media, Wikipedia and other sites that can be self-edited, blogs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what she claims or interviewing her. References should be in-line so we can tell what fact each is supporting, and should not be bare urls

Article directly referencing the talk page.[edit]

Peter Gunn (song) states in the lede: "For a brief analysis of Henry Mancini's original soundtrack recording see the Talk Page."

Is this acceptable behaviour and use of the talk page? I would have thought that if it's relevant info it should be in the article, and if not relevant, then not mentioned in the article - certainly not the lede (and possibly not on the talk page either). Chaheel Riens (talk) 14:35, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I agree completely and have removed that from the lede. I can't come up with any situation where there should be a link on a mainspace page to a talkspace page. I'm not sure if there is any way to look for these issues, (maybe a quarry query?)Naraht (talk) 15:10, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Maintenance templates like {{Multiple issues}} link to the talk page. Mduvekot (talk) 15:20, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
True, but a template is not part of the article per se. Thanks for the assist here. Chaheel Riens (talk) 19:47, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sources for a new article ?[edit]

Hello,

I've created a new article, it's been years since I've done that.

Here it is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/François_D%27Haene

Now I need to provide sources. There are plenty of sources of course, since he's won many competition. Do I just need to link a newspaper article stating that he won and that would be enough ?

Also, how can I link it to the french article ?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chocapic (talkcontribs) 16:15, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Chocapic. The point of a reference is so that a reader can in principle check that what the Wikipedia article says is correct (and hasn't been inserted by mistake, for example, or vandalised since). To that end, what is needed is proper bibliographic information: title, date, author (if available), where it was published etc. A link is a convenience, not an essential part of the reference. There are many ways of doing references: I prefer to use the reference templates such as {{cite news}}, but these are not compulsory. I recommend you read referencing for beginners. You possibly ought to read NSPORT as well, and if it is a long time since you created a page, I suggest having a look at your first article too, since the requirements are rather tighter than they used to be. As for linking it, pick "Add links" in the side bar, and that will take you to the Wikidata entry (which is how interlanguage links are mostly handled now). --ColinFine (talk) 22:58, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is a non-profit website a reputable source?[edit]

Hi,

Here is the page I want help with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_Water_Action

I am working for a non-profit environmental group called Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund. The organization has done terribly with marketing and I am taking on a bit of work to improve this -- to improve information available about our group and what kind of work we do. I would like to expand the Clean Water Action wikipedia page and eventually create a Clean Water Fund wikipedia page.

Since I work for the group in question, I want to be very careful about providing good sources and citations for any edits that I make. So my first question is: is the Clean Water Action official webpage a reputable source?

Example: Wikipedia says that Clean Water Action is an "advocacy" group. The most important work we do is lobbying so I wanted to expand the page to say that Clean Water Action is an "advocacy and lobby" group. To source this would I be able so cite staff member profiles from the Clean Water Action website that say 'this staff member works on x,y,z, and lobbying'?

Many thanks for your helpful feedback!

Superpositionn (talk) 19:34, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You need to declare your WP:Paid status on your user page, and perhaps you are not the best person to make the edit because you have a WP:Conflict of interest. Member profiles are not the most reliable of sources. You need to find an independent WP:Reliable source to back up your statement. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia that reports what other reliable sources have written about organisations. It may not be used to improve marketing, and is not really interested in what an organisation says about itself. However, if you can find somewhere that states that lobbying is included in the organisation's aims, then we could probably add that fact. Dbfirs 21:08, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please don't do this, Superpositionn. Wikipedia may not be used for promotion. If we have an article on your organisation, you will have no control whatever over its content, and will be strongly discouraged from editing it directly; and the content will probably not be in any way related to what you say or want to say about your organisation, but based solely on what people unconnected with you have chosen to publish about you. Please do your marketing work elsewhere. --ColinFine (talk) 22:50, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Federal Court Judge Okla Jones Tobacco ruling against Tobacco Industry[edit]

In his decision, the judge, Okla B. Jones 2d of the United States Eastern District of Louisiana, has not only created the possibility for the largest class action in history, but has also exposed the tobacco companies to their most formidable legal challenge yet. So far, they have never had to pay any money penalties in court.

The ruling opens the tobacco companies to a years-long legal discovery process that would seek documents and other evidence on whether the tobacco industry has known that cigarette smoking is addictive and concealed that knowledge.

"The decision poses a greater threat to the tobacco industry than any prior lawsuit," said Matthew L. Myers, counsel to the Coalition on Smoking or Health, a Washington-based group composed of the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association.

He added, "There is the potential for a staggering punitive damage award in this case, which has the potential for changing the way the tobacco industry does business for all time."

In his ruling, Judge Jones defined the class as being composed of "all nicotine-dependent persons in the United States" and its territories and possessions "who have purchased and smoked cigarettes manufactured by the defendants," as well as their estates and their spouses, children, relatives, "significant others" and their "heirs or survivors."

Please make mentioned of this significant decision. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2606:A000:43C3:9F00:BC82:519F:2D64:72B0 (talk) 20:29, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The place to discuss this is on the talk page of the relevant article; alternatively, since you have found what sounds to be a reliable source, you could consider being BOLD and editing the article yourself. Please note that Wikipedia articles must never advance arguments or conclusions, unless they are summarising the argument or conclusion of a reliable published source. So an article could report on the case and the decision, and quote Myers' prediction (with an appropriate reference); but it must not speculate in Wikipedia's voice about the possibility of the largest class action in history. --ColinFine (talk) 23:06, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the source cited above is dated 1995. This is not a new development. Maproom (talk) 09:01, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Waqar Zaka page[edit]

Hello

I am trying to help Waqar Zaka as his page is locked by someone. Most of his info is incorrect. Kindly please unlock his page so he can update correct info. People can search him and get to know him with correct info about him . Inspire youth of Pakistan.

Thank you

Sohail khan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.206.135.255 (talk) 20:44, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The page is semi-protected, so you will need to suggest changes on the talk page of the article. It will not be "unlocked" because people with a WP:Conflict of interest have been editing the article. Please state clearly which information is incorrect, and provide a reference to the correct information. Dbfirs 20:56, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please understand, Sohail Khan, that Waqar Zaka is not "his page": it is Wikipedia's article about him, and he and his associates are strongly discouraged from editing it directly. The article should be neutral, and based on what people who have no connection with Zaka have published about him. Looking at the names of the references in it, most of them appear to be fro interviews, i.e. based on what he says about himself. Wikipedia is not interested in what he says about himself, but only in what independent sources say about him. Please see WP:V. --23:12, 19 October 2017 (UTC)

Problem with infobox dates[edit]

Can someone point out to me how to set the birth/death dates properly, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Rowe_(archaeologist) Thanks. prokaryotes (talk) 23:44, 19 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi prokaryotes, see this edit [1] here. You had left in birth age which wasn't needed and then in the death you hadn't told it when he was born. NZFC(talk) 00:37, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Can you correct it? Thanks. prokaryotes (talk) 00:43, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Okay i see you corrected it almost at the same time when I tried something out. Thank you NZ Footballs Conscience prokaryotes (talk) 00:46, 20 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
