New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Theleekycauldron/Archive/2023,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Assistance requested

I was contacted by the subject of an article. Someone edited personal information that is not public into his article (Redacted). Could you go the extra step and hide the edit(s) where that information appears. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=David_McLane&oldid=1174341020 Trackinfo (talk) 00:28, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Generational idiom

Just wanted to point out that I used an idiom from my generation, "Jump in the lake". It seems you have interpreted the statement as go to ANI. It is a generational idiom which has this meaning. I have since struck it from the nomination but I wanted you to know the meaning. Lightburst (talk) 20:05, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

@Lightburst: Thanks for the note :) I'll strike it from my statement. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 20:15, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Advice for a new editor

Hi leeky! I’m a (very) new editor here and I was looking through your second RfA and was surprised to learn how close we are in age. I was wondering if you had any advice for someone just starting to dip their toes in this massive project. Thanks! Bbf242 (talk) 22:07, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Hey there, Bbf242! Sorry I've let this sit for a bit, but you totally made my day when I first read this :) I guess I have two bits of wisdom:
  1. Make friends! Or at least, do things that have you interacting positively with other editors – if you find people you want to stick around, even better. You can do Main Page work, like at WP:DYK (my personal favorite, submit some new articles here and help out!), WP:ITN, or WP:OTD; when you've picked up some experience, you can do content reviews at WP:GAN, WP:FAC, WP:FLC; you can participate in discussions at any of the WP:XfDs. The discord is a great to place to hang out as well, and I'm there pretty often!
    • I find this one important because friends help make a very big project a little smaller. Most people just starting out don't know what they don't know, pick a few titles, find out the articles already exist, and leave. But the more you talk to other people, the more you're exposed to new ideas for articles and new areas to work in, the more you can find something you like and go on a deep dive through it. And then you'll have people to share it with!
  2. Grown-ups are most of the reason this site is a mess. It's useful to keep in mind when experienced users go on and on about how kids looking for fun are the worst thing to happen to this site.
Hope you enjoy – if you didn't have a friend before, now you have me! Feel free to stop by any time, I'm usually less busy than this. Happy editing :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 17:45, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

The above page was deleted due to the user who created it after a ban. Could it be reinstated? Or is there at least a page history I can view so that I can try to recreate it? Many thanks. --Midnightdreary (talk) 20:06, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Hey, Midnightdreary! I'm not going to show you the creation of a banned user, as then they'd have copyright attribution in whatever you do create – but here's the bibliography:
The categories are Category:Sculptors from New York (state), Category:Colby College alumni, Category:Boston University alumni, Category:21st-century American philosophers, Category:Living people, and Category:1966 births. Hope this helps! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 17:32, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Israeli peace song

Have you decided to take it to AfD or not? Hevenu shalom aleichem. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:02, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Done – I'm okay however this goes, so, best of luck to you :) Hevenu shalom aleichem. (Not one I grew up with, but it's lovely!) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 18:13, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
It's lovely. Let's delete it. Shalom. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:38, 13 October 2023 (UTC)
I just received a barnstar for it.

my story today
Thank you for improving articles in October! - Today, it's a place that inspired me, musings if you have time. My corner for memory and music has today a juxtaposition of what our local church choirs offer. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:12, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Fix needed

I think you misread this discussion on the Rufus Clark hook. Please undo the change, as I really would really, really prefer it to read the way I nominated it and how it was approved and promoted. Thank you! ~ Pbritti (talk) 23:42, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

@Pbritti: I don't know that the The Gazette makes it either – I'd want a source that isn't prone to exaggerating flattering titles on hometown figures. I do still think that Potato King should be cut from the article? Happy to make changes post-airing, no ticking clock :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 23:47, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
The Gazette is a Pulitzer-prize winning paper of record in Colorado, so I feel that concern is unfounded. The term is also used by Denver Public Library (fun fact: they actually have a ton of images that they'll release for use on Wikipedia whenever requested), as has the Denver Post also ([1]). I think the original rationale was arguable (a source from Highlands Ranch's quasi-municipal governing body perhaps being not independent enough) but I think that there's enough evidence that this is a reliable, common title for describing Clark. I hope to be remembered for something as goofy as spud cultivation when I go... ~ Pbritti (talk) 23:56, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
@Pbritti: yeah, fair. I probably wouldn't give it to you if this were something like "Rufus Clark was the largest potato producer in [region wider than Colorado]", but given that it's a nickname, cool with me. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 00:07, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
Thank you—it's hard for me to express how much this means to me. Have a great one. ~ Pbritti (talk) 00:13, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

Theleekycauldron, you weren't properly pinged by the nominator when they responded to you, so you probably haven't seen it. Can you please stop by and get this nomination moving again? Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:08, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

Hey, BlueMoonset! The new hook is good as far as DYKFICTION goes, but I'm not up to doing a full review at the moment. I'm sure someone will come along to take it :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 17:45, 23 October 2023 (UTC)

New Zealand DYK multihook

Leeky, thank you so much for donating all those QPQs for the New Zealand multihook! It was exceedingly generous of you. Since the multihook nom, there was a request from some DYK editors to turn some of the new MP bios into individual nominations instead, and so five of them have been removed from the multihook. One of those is Tom Rutherford, for whom you donated a QPQ. It doesn't feel right to take a QPQ given to a multihook and use it for an individual nomination instead, so are you happy with me reusing the QPQ for the individual nomination, or would you rather I gave it back to you? (It is no problem if you prefer it back, I have one in hand I can replace it with). DrThneed (talk) 00:32, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

@DrThneed: Always happy to help! It's yours, take it for the individual nom :) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 01:02, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
You're a star! Thank you.DrThneed (talk) 01:14, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Scientelensia

Dear @Theleekycauldron,

I respect your opinion on my arbitration and do accept that action may be justified, but I believe a topic ban is quite harsh given my good intentions and that others were engaging in worse conduct unpunished also.

I beg of you, read fully and see that most people (although this is of course not all of the viewpoints in the discussion) do not support such harsh action:

Kind regards, From Scientelensia (talk) 20:33, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

@Scientelensia: Good intentions are good – and if there are other users that need sanctioning, we'll take care of that too. To clue you in on how to avoid the worst of the sanctions, what the uninvolved admins in your thread are looking for – and haven't seen yet – is real change in your behavior. We're convinced that the comments you made in the discussion were beyond the pale. By defending them, you're telling us that you'll do it again. That leaves us with no choice but to prevent you from editing in the topic area. I think you have a lot of potential to be a constructive editor in the topic area, but it's on you to prove that you're willing to take criticism onboard and edit within bounds. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 20:48, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
I see what you are saying but would like to state that in defending them I simply seek to explain my intentions at that time every though my conduct was wrong: I just want to explain myself. I haven’t made many edits since this whole thing started but a look at my contributions will tell you that I have only enacted positive edits and largely refrained from talk pages. I’ve made lots of good contributions to the pages displayed on my talk page and will try to continue to do so. Again, I reiterate my intentions to change my behaviour for the better and am sorry if I didn’t convey this to you. Scientelensia (talk) 06:54, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Regarding extended confirmed access

Hello, It seems like you revoked my access which I had obtained.

I have been an active user in Wikipedia for almost three years, dedicating my efforts to several pages regarding movies. I aim to safeguard specific pages that I am passionate about. Despite this, I have made substantial contributions to the community, focusing on maintaining the integrity of content and preventing vandalism on pages of personal interest. Additionally, recently I have dedicated significant effort in enhancing my userpage to make it visually appealing, but these are much lesser than the contributions I made on Wikipedia. I seek guidance on how to regain my permissions. Kichawww (talk) 07:15, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

@Kichawww: you've made 244 of your 514 edits to your userpage. We'll say 10 of those we're necessary, and you're 14 over, so that's 220 actually constructive edits that you need to make in order to regain the access. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 07:21, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Kindly take a look at my userpage. Do you really believe only 10 edits are necessary for this ? Also, my edits are in wikitext which is a combination of css and html, How could an inexperienced person capable of something such as this. It really took a lot of effort to craft my userpage. I understand your demand and concerns, but 220 edits are way too high. Please reconsider. Kichawww (talk) 07:41, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
I revoked your access because you made a large number of edits that neither contribute constructively to the encyclopedia nor give you significant experience in doing so. I'm not convinced that asking you to re-do those edits in the form of positive improvement to regain extended-confirmed was the wrong decision. If you'd like, you can appeal this to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 07:44, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
There's a "preview" button you can use, rather than saving the page every time you want to do something like this. jp×g 08:55, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Admin tree raw data?

Hi Theleekycauldron, I just stumbled upon User:Theleekycauldron/fun/admin_family_tree because it had been shared on IRC (#wikipedia-en-admins) and am fascinated by the idea. I'd love to see the actual tree. Perhaps we could find a non-image way to import it to Wikipedia too. Does the family tree website provide any way to export a file with the data, perhaps as a CSV or similar? ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:51, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

dotty is great for generating directed acyclic graph images. I'd be happy to hack it, but would definitely be easier if you already have a raw-data file (any format is fine) rather than my having to scrape the wiki-source of your page. DMacks (talk) 23:12, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Hey, ToBeFree and DMacks! Love to hear it's making the rounds out there :) I've made a .ged file available here and the original FamilyEcho tree is here – there are couple things to watch out for. First, it seems to not like spaced names that aren't capitalized all the way through; second, non-admins are marked as male and self-nominated admins are marked as female; third, i don't know if this translates in a GEDCOM file, but to accomodate large numbers of nominators on some RfAs, I had to list some admins as adoptive parents, and it leads to weirdness re: partners and ex-partners; fourth, Hey man im josh is not included, as are some fifth and sixth nominators who didn't fit (though Hmij is on my user subpage). That information is meaningless: parent, child, and gender are the only important bits. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 23:19, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
😊 Thank you very much! DMacks, are you sure it's acyclic? I didn't know the term before, but I did hit cycles in my tree! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:24, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Ah, yes, extra caveat! some names appear twice; Redwolf24 nominated Essjay nominated Redwolf24, for example, means that one of those is gonna show up in the tree twice. You'll have to do some anti-duplicating. theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 23:25, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Eh, dotty is fine with cyclic too. I just hadn't thought too deeply about how this wasn't a usual family-tree thing. DMacks (talk) 23:50, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Well that was fun:
