ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Changes later this week

  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 December. It will be on all wikis from 3 December (calendar).

Future changes

  • The iOS Wikipedia app will show readers more of the article history. They can see new updates and easier see how the article has changed over time. This is an experiment. It will first be shown only to some iOS app users as a test. [1][2]
  • Advanced item The Wiki Replicas can be used for SQL queries. You can use Quarry, PAWS or other ways to do this. To make the Wiki Replicas stable there will be two changes. Cross-database JOINS will no longer work. You can also only query a database if you connect to it directly. This will happen in February 2021. If you think this affects you and you need help you can post on Phabricator or on Wikitech. [3]

  • You can now put pages on your watchlist for a limited period of time. Some wikis already had this function. [4][5]

Changes later this week

  • Information from Wikidata that is used on a wiki page can be shown in recent changes and watchlists on a Wikimedia wiki. To see this you need to turn on showing Wikidata edits in your watchlist in the preferences. Changes to the Wikidata description in the language of a Wikimedia wiki will then be shown in recent changes and watchlists. This will not show edits to languages that are not relevant to your wiki. Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • We now have a central repository for wikibase-cli templates, with the aim to document best practices, offer general purpose request/create/edit templates, but also offer more niche templates as examples of what's possible: contributions and template requests welcome!
  • Development
    • Simple Query Builder development continues. We worked on combining different query conditions as well as internationalisation.
    • Making the precision translatable in geocoordinate and date inputs (phab:T269102)
    • Changes to descriptions in a specific language now show up on watchlist and recent changes on the Wikipedia and co for that language (phab:T191831)
    • Finished working on the problem of incorrectly-escaped label being included in a link to Special:NewItem if there are no search results (phab:T263258)
    • Investigating why we're currently skipping a significant number of Item IDs (phab:T268625)
    • Wikibase Release Strategy/Infrastructure: We have decided where to host future Docker and tarball releases of Wikibase. You can read about the details and the reasoning in the following ADRs: Docker Image Repository, Tarball Repository

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Beer

Hmmm, it just seemed to me that this isn't particularly notable info. Take any other random industry -the garment industry -should every business and their product lines need a mention? Even more extreme - where they are located and of what the garments are composed? Most of these business have only a handful of employees and will likely cease existing within a decade, their product lines have an even lower life expectancy -some of these craft beers will only exist a season.

Look, I was looking at articles for deletion earlier and some people were saying the fourth most important uranium mine in the world by volume was not notable enough for inclusion... How come tiny local beer start-ups are worshipped so? Seems silly.

Question re. sandbox

Hello. I've looked for an answer to this question elsewhere without success, so I hope you don't mind this entry. I just created a new page titled Other Afternoons. When I moved the page from my sandbox to the main space, it brought along the history of other pages that I had previously worked on in the sandbox back in November (specifically Spiritual Unity and Live in Paris (1975) (Lost ORTF Recordings)). In other words, the history for Other Afternoons (which I started working on today) contains info regarding edits to other pages.

Is there any way to correct this problem? Can you please tell me how I can avoid repeating this mistake? Many thanks, best wishes, and apologies for the screw-up! Helen Puffer Thwait (talk) 15:26, 12 December 2020 (UTC)

@Helen Puffer Thwait: In future, copy the code (if using the code editor) from your sandbox to a brand new page.
To fix this instance, you'll need to ask an admin to undo the page move, delete the new page, and then you can act as I suggest above.
