Wong Foon Sien[edit]

Created by Mindmatrix (talk). Self nom at 19:58, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

ALT1: ... that at the age of 12, Foon Sien met exiled revolutionary Sun Yat-sen, after which he resolved to study law?
ALT2: ... that Foon Sien was embroiled in controversy for working as a translator for the police investigation and court trial of the Janet Smith case?
ALT3: ... that despite being a lifetime member of the Liberal Party of Canada, Foon Sien supported a Progressive Conservative for the federal elections of 1957 and 1958?
ALT4: ... that Foon Sien became well-known for his annual trips to Ottawa to lobby for the elimination of immigration restrictions to Canada?
ALT5: ... that despite his persistent pursuit of rights for Chinese Canadians, Foon Sien was resented by some people in the Chinese community?

  • Reviewing this nomination. Carcharoth (talk) 01:43, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
    • Confirming that QPQ review done (see here). The article was created at 21:31, 27 January 2013 and nominated at 19:58, 29 January 2013 (i.e. within 5 days of creation), so it is new enough. The article at the time of nomination looked like this. That is long enough (well over 1500 characters). Have not verified the length of the hooks, but they all look under 200 characters. All the hooks are formatted correctly, though I have copyedited ALT5 slightly. In terms of interest and phrasing, I prefer the original hook, ALT1 and ALT4. The ideal hook would include a mention of Chinese Canadians and say that he was a 'Canadian journalist and labour activist'. ALT1 doesn't mention Canada at all, and neither does ALT2. While ALT4 doesn't mention Chinese immigration to Canada at all. I still need to check the sourcing for the hook statements. I also need to check the sourcing and presentation of the article. At first glance, though, it all looks good. I expect to be able to mark this as good to go tomorrow, once I've had a closer look. For now, I'll read through the whole article and do some minor copyedits. Carcharoth (talk) 02:05, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
      • One thing I did notice on the initial read of the article is that the death date appears only in the infobox. It should be in the main body of the article as well, with a citation to a reference. Carcharoth (talk) 02:35, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
        • Blimey. I had included an entire blurb about his death in the text, but must have accidentally removed it while rearranging text during that edit. Sigh. I'll update this. Mindmatrix 04:34, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
          • Done. Mindmatrix 04:38, 31 January 2013 (UTC)
            • Thanks for that. I've been a bit delayed, but should have the review finished by Friday. Carcharoth (talk) 01:51, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
      • I've added ALT6 and ALT7 as alternates to the original hook and ALT4, respectively, to incorporate the fact he was a journalist and activist. Mindmatrix 03:26, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
ALT6: ... that despite his parents' plans for Foon Sien to have a career in Imperial China, he became a journalist and activist for Chinese Canadian rights and redress for the immigration head tax?
ALT7: ... that journalist and rights activist Foon Sien became well-known for his annual trips to Ottawa to lobby for the elimination of immigration restrictions to Canada?
  • Thanks for those alternatives. I've added "immigration" to ALT6 (now 187 characters). On looking over the article again, not required for DYK, but a link to any online republication of articles he wrote would be good if those are available, plus any details of the honours and awards he received (one source mention he received many of these). Still not had time to check through all the sources, but slowly getting there. Apologies for the delay, should be done by the end of the weekend. Carcharoth (talk) 07:43, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
  • OK, I wasn't able to check the offline sources, but the online ones I checked were OK. I would go with either ALT6 or ALT7. Not sure who chooses the hook to be used, but am marking this as good to go. Carcharoth (talk) 23:54, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
