I don't think they were "of Denmark" either. I believe cadet branches of the house were only given the title "prince/princess of Denmark" after the Cabinet Order of 23 September 1774. That's why the male-line descendants of Christian III of Denmark were only "of Denmark" if they were directly in the line of the eldest son Frederick II of Denmark or children of the monarch, and why the children of the younger sons of the monarch (Magnus, Duke of Holstein and John II, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg) were not so styled.
