Swiss heritage on en:wikipedia

Improving articles on Swiss law

Hi everyone. I'd like to improve the articles about Swiss law. Does anyone have a good overview where I should begin, what is missing and what I have to consider when writing about Swiss law? Kind regards --PatrikUlmann (talk) 07:50, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

@PatrikUlmann: I'll suggest three quick ideas. First, if you are still looking for pages to improve and not just ideas about how to improve pages, people at WikiProject Switzerland have assessed the quality of articles relevant to the project, so you can easily find the articles that need work. For example, more than 15,000 articles are currently just "Stubs". You could look through there for law-related articles. Second, the people at Wikipedia:WikiProject Law may also have good suggestions. Finally, in improving articles on Switzerland, you will find that the German/French/Italian Wikipedias sometimes have much better articles than the English Wikipedia (and often have an article where the English Wikipedia has none). Translating those pages can sometimes be an easier way to build English content. - Astrophobe (talk) 18:11, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

Is this company notable? Most of the references are in a language I can't read, nor can I determine if the references are "good" ones or not.

I'll just go off of what's on the page, with the caveats that (a) I don't want to search for sources myself so there may be in-depth coverage in multiple independent reliable sources that just aren't on the page yet, and (b) I'm assuming it should be judged according to WP:GNG, but I can't say I know a lot about startup-related notability consensus so maybe there's some kind of assumed notability for this kind of thing that I'm not aware of. With those caveats, I'll go source by source and explain why notability has emphatically not been demonstrated. Source 1 looks in-depth and reliable but not independent, since it is just an interview with the founder without any in-depth independent text by the magazine. Source 2 is a record of a trademark and source 3 is the entry for the company in a government-maintained database of companies, neither of which are independent or in-depth evidence of notability. Source 4 is a discussion of the organization in a local paper, which looks like a perfectly in-depth and independent discussion of the subject in a reliable source. Source 5 almost convinced me that it was right on the boundary of potentially being considered a reliable source per WP:LINKEDIN, but then I realized that the author of this linkedin post works at the school where this startup is founded, so it is not credibly independent. Finally, Source 6 is the company's website. So in total I count one local news article that looks like in-depth independent coverage in a reliable source, which falls short of GNG's demand for multiple sources along those lines. In my opinion if this page were published as is and went up for AfD, there is no way it would survive without a WP:HEY rescue. Having said all of that, it is absolutely possible that the sources are out there to demonstrate notability. davidwr Astrophobe Very late, I realize - I ran an extended search for sources and came up empty. I believe this should be treated as non-notable at the time being. One remark regarding Astrophobe's evaluation of source 5 - HEC is a full grown university, not just a local school, so one of their teaching assistants using an alumni's company as an example for subsequent coursework is probably more notable than "local school paper discusses former pupil". However, given how recently the founder graduated, it is difficult to ascertain whether AZNA was picked as a use case totally independently, or due to familiarity with the former student himself. I would therefore also discount the independence of source 5, and land on "doesn't pass WP:GNG for now. MLauba ^(Talk) 12:45, 15 January 2021 (UTC)

"Canton of" vs no "Canton of"

Someone added "Canton of" to all canton pages (for example: Canton of Nidwalden instead of Nidwalden), without updating the categories. Given that there isn't any trace of consensus about that (see WT:WikiProject Switzerland/Archive 4#"Canton of X" and Talk:Canton of Vaud#Bold page move) and that the explanations provided were not really compliant with WP:Article title (see this diff), I reverted back to the previous titles. In the cases of Canton of Grisons and Canton of Vaud that would involve renaming the categories (and also please note the discrepancy between Canton of Grisons and Category:Graubünden), so I'm leaving them where they are for now. Women in Red Europe contest

After successfully completing our Asia and Africa contests over the past six months, we now welcome contributions to our Women in Europe contest which runs for three separate months from April to June 2021. To qualify for the contest, articles have to contain at least 160 words or 1,000 characters of running text and participants need to be members of Women in Red. Swisstopo maps are now free

External link to swisstopo geodata

In case you didn't hear it in the news, all swisstopo maps (available at map.geo.admin.ch) are free since March 2021. Which means: in addition to use them as source to write tons of (quality) articles, now you may also incorporate them directly in Wikpedia and modify them as you wish, as long as you cite swisstopo (see example on the right). I have the 1:300 000 General Map (printed version, [1]), which is a reduced version of the four 1:200 000 national maps on a single sheet. It's a great map to have when travelling around Switzerland and I actually advice people to buy it. I think we could have an electronic version of it. Naturally, we should also have at least a few 1:25 000 examples. Zach (Talk) 09:43, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

I downloaded a first sheet. The original tiff file is 379 MB. I used GIMP to convert it to a jpeg with only 50% quality. The result is a 25 MB file, not so big for a resolution of 14,000 × 9,600 pixels. Zach (Talk) 10:42, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

I think we should even have all 1:50'000 sheets. Then they can be easily stitched together with Template:Multiple image. Have a look at Lake Geneva#Topographic map for a nice example (and Lake Lucerne#Settlements for a 1:25'000 example). Zach (Talk) 18:22, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

I, too, think geographic entities should have a link to a geoportal including swisstopo maps. The question is how do we do it. Do we put an external link to map.geo or do we have our own atlas? Personally, I think a template linking to map.geo (using the coordinates of the page) would be a first easy thing to do. Zach (Talk) 16:03, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Also please note that orthophotos and terrain (3D) are free to use as well. They can be used to generated photorealistic views of any place in Switzerland, like remote locations where free pictures are often not available (example here), or simply aerial views. Correcting error on pages covering Switzerland

On the page Lago di Sambuco which is a reservoir, the value given as water volume in reality is the concrete volume of the dam. The correct volumen is 64'000'000 m^3. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
