Date awaiting confirmation?[edit]

Hi there...I see the date has been moved to Aug 21-22, but is still awaiting confirmation. When might we know that the date is confirmed? You know...flights, hotels, etc... Risker (talk) 05:38, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies, the booking with NYU has been problematic and we're probably getting another venue, either at City University of New York's LaGuardia Community College, or possibly with a donated corporate space. I'll let you know as soon as the dates are confirmed (if it's at LaGuardia, we will probably move the Wiki-Conference to a Friday and a Saturday, with a Sunday picnic).--Pharos (talk) 16:08, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Most likely now is Tisch School of the Arts at NYU; we should know if that can be confirmed by Monday.--Pharos (talk) 09:38, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Next HOPE[edit]

Myself and probably others would like to meetup during The Next HOPE conference. However, The last time I put something up at Template:Meetup it was taken down as "not wiki media relate[d]". Can I have an endorsement for a mini-meetup? — Dispenser 01:43, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody wanna meet for dinner nearby, frinstance the Heartland Brewery in the Empire State Building? Jim.henderson (talk) 22:52, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Call for presentations[edit]

Now that we finally have the dates nailed down, I hope we can see some more Lightning Talks, Panels, and Open Space ideas. Don't be shy!--Pharos (talk) 21:55, 23 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lightning Talks![edit]

Let's see some more ideas, these are quite easy and fun for everyone to do :)--Pharos (talk) 01:06, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to give a talk on Neutrality and Diversity, sharing how presenting ideas without prejudice fights against the sort of tyranny which Allen Bloom warned against:
  • "The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside." Allan Bloom - The Closing of the American Mind
I would argue that by fairly describing all points of view, we open our readers to new possibilities when the mainstream has gone astray; but that we do no harm to Truth and Reality by exposing readers to crackpot ideas. We can rest confident that our audience is wise enough to tell the difference, especially when we give them sufficient information to understand a theory along with all the evidence which supports or contradicts it.
If my topic is selected, I shall outline a few cases where Wikipedia did an outstanding job of this, as well as a couple where we still could use some improvement. --Uncle Ed (talk) 02:19, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ed! Would you like to do this as a Lightning Talk? If so, please add it to Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wiki-Conference#Lightning Talks, we;d be glad to have you.--Pharos (talk) 21:26, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Panels-join them[edit]

A couple of the Panels only have one or two members. So, especially if you're not on 3 other Panels already, please considering joining one that you feel you can contribute to.--Pharos (talk) 00:36, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am looking for a non-administrator who has participated in the Pending changes trial to join that panel...we promise it won't be too onerous! Risker (talk) 03:02, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Topics for Open Space, PLEASE[edit]

As of Friday morning, 8 days before the conference, we have six topics for the Open Space sessions and forty slots! Not only that, but 2 of the 6 topics are being given over lunch. I know that Open Space is supposed to be self-organizing but, if last summer's conference is any guide, we can't expect to more than double our topics/sessions during the conference itself. If the list doesn't expand, we're all going to go home early on Sunday.

Please, if you can think of anything interesting, even if it's only to yourselves, put it down. (Another strategy is to change some of the Open Space slots, say, in the evenings or Sunday morning, to Panel discussions. We do seem to have enough of those.) --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 10:18, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I plan the OpenStreetMap mini-workshop / mapping party to take two open space slots on Sunday morning + go over lunch. Doing a workshop over a 40 minute timeslot is not practical or at least would be scaled back a lot. :( --Aude (talk) 20:00, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Couch surfing?[edit]

I wonder if anyone has a spare couch and wouldn't mind a visitor? I will buy you beer :) I am coming from DC, arriving on Friday and probably leave Monday morning. I am somewhat short on $$$ and would rather not pay full $$$ on a hotel, if at all possible. --Aude (talk) 17:28, 22 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I should be able to host one or two people. Anyone else who is able to do similar (because we have had several couchsurfing requests off-wiki also), please let me know ASAP so I can put you in contact.--Pharos (talk) 05:21, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Check your e-mail. Cheers. --Aude (talk) 17:14, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Switch sessions![edit]

A-4 and A-3. SJ+ 03:44, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This kind of makes sense, considering that otherwise you would be in two places at once, which might be tricky even for you. I've switched them for now; if there's any objection, let me know.--Pharos (talk) 05:12, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to invite people to share their ideas at our joint WikiWormhole Belgrade-NYC page on meta. And check out the awesome logo they made!.--Pharos (talk) 05:29, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question about lunch[edit]

Questions[edit]

How can I ask questions? I hope I am not the only one with advance questions. For example, where is lunch and what/how is the food?--DThomsen8 (talk) 16:17, 27 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Last year, we had a grant from the Foundation and ended up bringing in (free for attendees) lunch both days - a couple guys went and got enough pizza to feed the whole group one day, and the next day a variety of burritos in the same quantities. I'm not positive that that's what is happening again this year, but it seems likely. keɪɑtɪk flʌfi (talk) 00:27, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information. Those of us on a restricted diet should plan ahead. --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:12, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Commons category[edit]

I'm creating a Commons category for video and pictures from the conference: commons:Category:Wiki-Conference New York 2010.--ragesoss (talk) 17:39, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Got it. I will be adding to it over the course of the next few days. Wwwhatsup (talk) 05:35, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost coverage[edit]

I have written a very brief note about the event for this week's Signpost issue: Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2010-08-30/News_and_notes#Briefly. The issue is set to go out later today, but if someone finds time to add more information during the next several hours, that would be very welcome (I'll note it here when we are published, until then it is still fine to add). Particularly helpful would be

  • More information about Sue Gardner's keynote (while the video stream was working nicely during Shirky's keynote, and Sage uploaded a recording of it later, the stream wasn't available for much of Sunday's keynote)
  • Attendance numbers
  • A brief overview of the panel topics and open space discussions

Regards, HaeB (talk) 11:20, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now published. Regards, HaeB (talk) 16:57, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you![edit]

The Real Life Barnstar
Wiki-Conference NYC 2010 this weekend was very enjoyable and always helpful to get Wikimedians together to discuss things.

Thank you Pharos, Jim Henderson, Jeremyb, Becksguy & the rest of the team from Wikimedia NYC, Free Culture NYU, and the host venue!!! Please have a barnstar :) --Aude (talk) 18:53, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Video / Audio[edit]

In addition to the efforts of OpenMeetings.org in Room A, on Saturday I shot video/recorded audio of the Lightning talks, the B3 'At Work' panel, and the NYCwiki Open Space. Unfortunately, due to operator error, my video of the latter half of the Lightning talks, and the 'At Work' panel got wiped. But I did get audio of those. I'll add file links here when I have uploaded. Wwwhatsup (talk) 21:49, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
