Old Discussion from Project Page[edit]

What date?[edit]

11th August (Saturday)

Note: There is a AirNZ Cup match at 5:30pm between Auckland and Waikato

Proposed time: 1 PM to ~ 3-4 PM

Seeing that the primary date is only three weeks away, and people would probably like to make plans, I will now <!-- hide --> the secondary alternative and the date discussion so far, and go for the first. Everybody who gave his name was happy with it anyway. Ingolfson 06:39, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I will also propose 1:00 pm. That suit all? Ingolfson 06:39, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good for me. I can make almost any time on that day.-gadfium 08:51, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If possible could we go for 12? I'm likely arriving earlier that day, so 12 seems like a better time. I guess it depends on everyone else, i'm flexible either way. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 11:28, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and left notices for a few people who attended/planned to attend either the first meetup or the second meetup. There'll probably be a few more signups in the next few days. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 02:05, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Other issues[edit]

This time, someone needs a camera, so we can post some pictures of the meetup on the page. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 04:17, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Didn't we have one last time? Actually, I have in the meantime come to the conclusion that I would not like to be photographed. If anyone cares to know why, I'll happily explain in person during the meeting. Ingolfson 11:07, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Neither would I, that's why I take photos, not be in them Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 11:39, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There was at least one camera at both the first and second Auckland Meet. SimonLyall or I will be bringing one. Linnah 11:29, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that should be good then. That's covered :) Now onto thinking about what to actually do at the meetup. (so far we have 3 hours of talking about two minor topics. I'm sure ill think of something.) Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 12:08, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No Foo Camps, please ;-) That aside, we certainly will find enough stuff to talk about. Even if we don't have a big agenda to cover, chatting and meeting up in real life is nice enough on its own, I feel. Ingolfson 08:38, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What location?[edit]

Ironique in Mt Eden. Maps/Addres to be put up soon.

I am not legal age to drink, so if possible a cafe. Some pubs to not allow minors to be there, so that may be an issue. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 11:43, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What about Galbraiths in Mt Eden again? Its close to the city, not too bad for parking in the area, and while I can't be sure, I don't feel they would have an issue with minors. Ingolfson 11:04, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I dropped them an email, lets see if they have any issues with it. Ingolfson 11:11, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, leave a message here when you get a reply. Could you put some addresses etc on here, or a website? Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 11:43, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Galbraiths website. And just because I can, I'll even add maplinks ;-) Ingolfson 12:30, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Galbraith's is out. They noted that the law was archaic, but didn't allow them to have minors inside at all, unless accompanied by a guardian. Other suggestions in city area wanted. Ingolfson 09:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What about circus circus (http://www.circuscircus.co.nz/)? They seem OK, and they were considered for the last meetup. Only issue is weekend bookings, but maybe we could organise something with them directly? Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 12:54, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Circus Circus is fairly busy on Sat. That's why they won't take reservations. Linnah 14:08, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I like the idea of a cafe. Most cafes serve beer and wine. So let's choose one of those. We also need a cafe that has a quiet area so we can hear ourselves talk. A popular cafe won't work nor will any venue that has a tv showing a game/match. Some cafes have meeting rooms or an area apart from the main area so one is away from noise. I'd like to suggest start time of 2pm. Linnah 14:40, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Venues suggested: Ironique (cafe in Mt Eden, opposite circus circus. Seems to be quite quiet in the evenings. Perhaps won't be busy on Sat afternoons either); Alleluya Bar & Cafe (has anyone been there on a Sat? am thinking maybe the arcade outside may be suitable); Mezze barhttp://www.mezzebar.co.nz/ - variety of food. Big area. hopefully won't be busy?; Linnah 15:22, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Mezze bar looks ok, however not sure it will suit everyone. Do the others have a website, or can you provide an example of the food they serve. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:07, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think Ironique or Alleluya are the best bets - could you possible post website addresses/ideas of food/etc? Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 22:18, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ironique: Visited Ironique this evening. Their dining area is divided into two. one out the back and one in the front. The dining area at the back is much bigger (in terms of number of covers and space). We can make reservations. The lunch and brunch menu will be available. The brunch items are quite normal (eggs with toast, eggs benedict, muesli, bacon and eggs, corn fritters etc). Prices are comparable with what you'd find at other places in the area. As I haven't been there on sat afternoons, I don't know how busy it is. I just haven't seen that place packed. There's food available for vegetarian though it appears to be only salads in the lunch menu (but usual stuff in brunch menu)
Mezze Bar: They do take bookings. It does get busy in the evenings. However I don't know how busy it gets from 1pm - 4pm. I like the fact there's a big selection of tapas. NZ Herald Review DineOut
Not checked out Alleluya cafe yet. As mentioned before, the area in the arcade, outside the cafe should be suitable. Unfortunately I have not been there before. Sugested it due to possible suitable area and it does have a good rept.
Ironique sounds good. Ingolfson 10:40, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can see, Ironique looks best, and they should suit everyone. Mezze looks ok, however not sure if everyone would enjoy. Do Ironique have reservation fees etc or is it covered under the cost of the meals? Anyway, I think that's the best bet so far. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 11:26, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't expect them to requre a min per head spend. That's rare in cafes. It is mostly venues and certain restaurants that have such requirement. Since we aren't booking a room/venue there should be no venue fee either. I am sure everyone will have at least a drink and something to eat. Smallest piece of food is probably around $3 - $4 (piece of cake or cookie). In the 2nd meet we just went up to the bar, and bought our own drinks as we got thirsty. The food was ordered and paid for by whoever wanted to eat it. I suggest we do the same this time. Hence cafes work well. There's no need for a tab for the table etc.
There are quite a few cafes in Mt Eden shops (at least 7 cafes, 2 bar + restaurant, 3 indian restaurants, 2 thai restaurants, 2 bakeries, 2 burger outlets etc). Not to mention the number of cafes within 3 - 5km radius of the place. I have only been there for coffee and cake after dinner. 10 of us that showed up at Ironique unanounced. We were welcomed. The coffee and cake was ok. Cake seems to be the cheapest of the 3 (if you compare with Circus Circus and Frasers). I have not dined there (ie not had brunch/lunch/dinner). So I have no idea what the food is like. My preference (in terms of cafes in Mt Eden) is for Frasers and Circus Circus. Neither are suitable for this meet. Sierra Cafe is also quite busy and noisy. Ironique opened in about December. It used to be an italian restaurant. I didn't see the food hygiene cert for the place while we were there. Unfortunately the search function in the Auckland City Council site is broken at the moment. I get the same result no matter what food outlet I search for - ie that it is new and hasn't been graded. Even places I know have been around for at least 5 years.
Matt - If you aren't sure, the only way is to check it out yourself. Here's the info. Ironique, 448 Mt Eden Rd, Mt Eden. ph: (09) 6233450. email: ironique@paradise.net.nz. You can get there by bus. Take the Three Kings bus (274 or 275) and get off at mt eden shops, at the stop just after the traffic lights. I don't wish to usurp your role as organiser. :-) regards Linnah 12:07, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, i'm not officially the organiser, just some random guy that was bold and created the page :). Also, the bus isnt really an option, i'm in northland, approx 200k's away from mt eden. So no real luck there :-). That's why I don't know the cafes themselves that well. From what I found, ironique has an A rating, circus circus also A, frasers is again an A, and Sierra was B. They all seem good :) Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:54, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I liked the last place in the eden terrace. A place that is large but quiet has the advantage it is easy to find a little quiet area for our own to converse in. Mathmo Talk 04:05, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Per the discussion above, both Galbraiths and the previous location are out, we have to use a cafe. Minors cannot attend a pub. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 05:06, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ironique has an A food grade. I move that we stick with Ironique, and don't worry too much about it being too full? Maybe we can post a mobile number (mine if needed) on here, to make sure that if for some reason we can't make it (but only find out at the time), we can shift somewhere else on the day. Ingolfson 08:38, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Decision: I will call Ironique to make reservations for August 11th 1pm. Anyone who wishes to object has until 5pm Tuesday July 24th, 2007 should do so. Otherwise it will be done. We appear to have discussed this at length. In light of what Matt/TheFearow says about not being the organiser but just the person who put up this page, I decided to offer to make the reservations. Also once location has been decided we can go ahead in publicising it. Linnah 15:50, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great, i'll say above. Also, I already spammed some talk pages. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 03:02, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geonotice[edit]

A recent Geonotice request relating to this project has been implemented! It should now be active. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:11, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

how often[edit]

how often is this meet up? 6 months? Blacksmith2 talkEditor Review 08:21, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Its a bit irregular, 6 months is a good guess. Watchlist Wikipedia:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board for anouncements. Ingolfson 08:27, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Or watchlist Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland if you just want to know about Auckland meetups.-gadfium 09:26, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Other NZ meetups will be notified there too. - SimonLyall 09:41, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Future Meetups[edit]

Please watchlist Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland (which is very low traffic) to be informed of future meetups in Auckland or elsewhere in NZ, or Wikipedia:New Zealand Wikipedians' notice board for discussion relevant to New Zealand Wikipedians.

Items to be brought[edit]

Please put your username next to the item if you are bringing it

  • Camera: SimonLyall
I’ll bring one, too. Photographic, not video. Ramir 04:50, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Some printouts of the agenda: I can possibly write all this down - so count me partially in, but someone with a printer would be ideal. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) I fixed my printer, and printed out the entire meetup page. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:55, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Anyone have a laptop with decent roaming online access? We shouldn't spend the time surfing Wikipedia, really, but if we want to point something out, it would be great. Ingolfson 11:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
hmm maybe next time we should pick a venue with free wireless (eg parnell, or cafes with a telecom wireless hotspot).Linnah 12:38, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What's the point of going to a meetup and NOT using wikipedia? It should be good for looking things up anyway. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 23:43, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have a laptop (as many do...), but currently no mobile broadband. But given an access point... or if people ask me to download a few pages to make it viewable offline? Mathmo Talk 06:31, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Would anyone object to me filming the meetup? A lot better than individual shots, and it means we can check what we discussed etc. I have access as part of my studies to some good quality film equipment, so if you guys are keen, i'll bring it, and distribute the video to anyone who wants it. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 10:27, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
People are not acting 'normal' when they are being filmed. And I would feel a little bit like in a Big Brother (TV series) setting. So no, I wouldn't be happy with that. I also don't think we need any perfect record of what we discussed. Its just a cooperative meetup, and nothing we decide there is above other consensus decisions made on Wikipedia itself. In fact, you might argue that decisions made during such a meetup are worth less, as they exclude people from the consensus-forming who couldn't attend. I'm probably exaggerating the effects and relevance of your good-faith proposal a little bit here, but I simply don't think it is a good idea. Cheers. Ingolfson 11:13, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd also prefer for the meeting not to be filmed. For the previous meetup, there was a documentary maker who was interested in filming the meetup and interviewing the participants, but the understanding was that a few minutes of the meeting only would be filmed. The documentary maker decided against coming in the end.-gadfium 20:12, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Just a suggestion, instead of filming, just record with a dictaphone or similar, that way we know whats been said with out the direct precense of a cameraBlacksmith2 talkEditor Review 22:01, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Probably a bad idea then. Also, I was meaning it would also be great for those that couldn't attend but want to - I had another good idea possible for future meetups, but that can wait. I won't bring it. I see what you mean by people not acting normally surrounded with film equipment (the camears quite big, plus leads, mics, etc). Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 00:33, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Publicising Auckland 3 Meetup[edit]

Do we want to use the new Geonotice feature to advertise the meetup? I have no idea how many extra people might come to it as a result of such advertising. If we have sufficiently fine control, I'd favour advertising to people between Hamilton and Whangarei.-gadfium 04:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you are leaving notes on user talk pages about this meeting, please also request they watch Wikipedia:Meetup/Auckland to be informed of future NZ meetups. It'll save having to look them up again next time. Thanks. Linnah 02:28, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Geonotice is a good idea. Also, I left the notices, but forgot about that. If I do any more, i'll make sure to point them to that. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 00:57, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've placed a request (I think) on the Geonotice page. The procedure for making a request isn't established yet.-gadfium 04:41, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The geonotice is now live. I can't see it; perhaps my ISP (Ihug) uses a nationwide pool of IP addresses so my current IP isn't identified as being in Auckland. Can anyone else see it on their watchlist page?-gadfium 20:12, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, i've confirmed it, but it didn't appear for me until I hard reloaded - hit Ctrl+F5 (or hold down ctrl/command and press the reload button). That worked for me. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:23, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we appear to be getting lots of attention, so it seems to be working :) Linnah might have to update the reservations. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:04, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There's no need to update the reservations till closer to the day. There will be some movement in the numbers between now and then.Linnah 07:44, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there's a list of IPs that are Auckland only (or that define users as auckland only). While there's various ways of defining what is a NZ IP, there's no definitive way. There are several lists of NZ IPs, not all of them are identical. Geonotice uses a freely distributable database that maps IP address to location. So I suspect the geonotice is going to users connected from what it thinks is a NZ IP. Linnah 08:28, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No, I know that especially in small countries like here (not saying we are small, but compared to a lot of others) that geotargeting can be really off. Auckland is usually pretty accurate, but due to the way that some ISPs handle routing, all users from some ISPs appear to be auckland users. It's some weird way, but at least it should appear to most people in the wanted areas. Also, I meant change closer to the date, as it can take up to 3-5 days for all watchlists to purge the javascript caches, and to get the new messages. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 09:20, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I got what I guess is a geonotice and came and checked this out. It certainly made me aware that there was a planned meetup near me, but at the moment have not had the time to put into much on the wiki and what limited time I have had I have used for other projects. But now I have seen this (thanks to the Geonotice) I will be on the lookout for later meetups. Leaderofearth 09:59, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great! At least we know there's a lot of interest. Future meetups should be much better. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:22, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, Matt, once we have this third one under our belt, Auckland had more meetups than most places worldwide ;-) Ingolfson 06:55, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also if more people were to add their names to it you could, use [1]

the categorey for wikipedians in Auckland, currently on 3, if there were more subcategories also in the right area you could use those.Blacksmith2 talkEditor Review 07:36, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Except for those places with monthly meetups. Also, the category is partially unnecessary, as we have the geonotice, which provides more publicity than anything. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 08:01, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agenda[edit]

What should I do[edit]

Hey everyone,

I'm flying in 9AM, and i've only got about 30mins of stuff to do in the 4 hours before the meetup. Can anyone recommend any good things to do? I have a couple ideas, but nothing that will last me that long. Thanks! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 01:32, 4 August 2007 (UTC) Some things to consider could be:[reply]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mendors (talkcontribs)

I was considering the sky tower, as I am actually going to visit SkyCity, to ask some questions regarding their convention center (see my wikimania bid thread on the new zealanders noticeboard). So i'll try to do that. Kelly Tarltons seems great - I haven't been there in many years, and I remember it being great. I didn't even think of it. The museum is a definate possibility - i'll check that out. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 02:04, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is also the National Maritime Museum, New Zealand, relatively close to the Sky Tower. Ingolfson 13:22, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I went their a year ago as part of a trip, so i'm probably not going to go there, the most convenient place has to be the one I went to recently! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:48, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, the plane tickets tripled in price the day before I bought them, so I am no longer flying down early, but driving later. That means I wont be able to do much before the meetup. Oh well! Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 06:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Where are you driving from? I know you said you live in Northland. If you arrive early, TimeOut is a good bookshop and happens to be in Mt Eden shops, not far from the venue. Anyway have a safe drive. Don't forget to take rest breaks. Linnah 20:39, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Whangarei. Itll be about 2-2.5 hours drive, i'm probably arriving 11-12. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:46, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
