Comment[edit]

Hmmm... There is already a Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps. This page is sort of redundant. --seav 12:17, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there is already a Maps project, with two ways to request maps, with suggested colors, style notices, and an ongoing and vibrant discussion page. That project pre-dates this by a couple of years. Please join in there! MapMaster 05:02, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is there, in fact, any point to this page? Maybe it should Improve maps rather than create them (e.g. vectorise). --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 19:58, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Consolidation attempts concerning map projects, labs, etc.[edit]

Note: This info was copied from Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Resources/Maps.

See Commons:Commons:Graphic Lab/Maps and Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps

Note: this sub-Lab was not open because in 2007 because :

  1. the English GLab was not enough active in 2007 to be divided in two specialised Lab, it's to the current graphits to think about open this sub-lab if need ;
  2. the Project:Map , which was on en.wikipedia.org for years before the Graphic Lab (us) displayed resistance to be convert into a Graphic Lab's subpage or simply to change their usages. So, despite their Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps is a death page, and despite I think a forum shaped page (like the GLab) is better for cross help, teach/learn exchanges, and to harmonize maps style, I didn't insisted (they were here first after all). Also, from what I seen (10 or 6 months ago), the project:Map continue to work on an "anarchist way" : each volunteer mapmaker making maps on his side, and then using the Project talkpage to ask help and share knowledge.
I now think the best thing to do should be to merge [WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps] and [Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Project map].

Other thing to notice about maps on wikipedia :

In summer 2007, the ~ten best mapmakers on wiki-en, wiki-fr, and commons were noticed about the project to set up new common map recommendations. The task is really HUGE (I means HUGE), and is just done at ~30% (first stage).
To avoid lost of time (by endless talks), the French graphist plan to lead the second stage alone : "set workable and complete recommendations".
The stage 3 will be to ask experts to harmonize and improvement the colors, icones, naming conventions according to the aim to communicate clearly (Avoiding chartjunk) with graphical medium.

Forum format[edit]

Since the graphics lab subpages are being updated . . . I'd be open to the idea of having a forum format like the graphics lab for maps, but have a couple of caveats - 1) I don't see any problem with using the general graphics lab for maps as it is now unless it's really getting overcrowded and 2) the reason Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps is dead is not because it isn't needed but due to a lack of cartographers to work on maps. I'm not sure switching to or adding a forum format is going to somehow make cartographers come out of the woodwork, but I don't think it'd hurt anything. As a side note I tend to work off of Category:Wikipedia requested maps more than Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Requested and orphan maps but I'm not sure anyone else does.
