History 014 - Friars, Heretics, and Female Mystics: Religious Turmoil in the Middle Ages
Stephen Bensch
From the 11th to the 15th century, the medieval Church confronted radically new versions of Christianity and religious movements inspired by evangelical poverty, preaching, mysticism, and a need to find a place for women in ecclesiastical institutions. The course will explore the aspirations, doctrines, and forms of expression of these religious manifestations and the Church's response to them, including the Inquisition. Social sciences.
