Wikipedia:Requests for feedback/2011 May 8

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hoping for a review of this page so it won't be a "new unreviewed article" anymore. Looking forward to any feedback :)

Done, but you still need to add WP:Categories (specific ones, not "Authors"; refer to any bio of a similar writer to get an idea for how categories work). You also have some WP:Bare URLs that need to be turned into full citations. For the GoogleBooks link, just copy the link and paste it directly into http://reftag.appspot.com and it'll automatically produce a full footnote, so that one will be easy to fix. EDIT: there's also a problem with your image licensing (see the message on your Talk page), so you'll want to look into that sooner than later lest the image be removed. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:29, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot!! 5arah3MK (talk) 22:39, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have prepared a little article of encyclopedic format about scientific contributions of professor Alain Gringarten to petroleum sciences, flow in porous media. Would be happy to your comments 82.112.6.2 (talk) 04:54, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have tagged it, but my biggest concern is that this seems to be closely paraphrased or even copied from other sites. Please rewrite the article in your own words, keeping the things I marked on the article in mind. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:09, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have tagged the article for clean-up. The main thing is to try and prove notability. Some editors prefer online sources for that; having some would greatly improve the article. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:17, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I find it very difficult to find sources, but this brilliant singer deserves a page on wikipedia. How and where can I find good and reliable sources?

Enilaroc (talk) 09:52, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, good question; here are a few places:
Note that if his name is just mentioned briefly, you can footnote that as evidence he was in "production XYZ", but you also need to have substantive coverage to justify having an article, that is a few footnotes which go to multi-sentence discussion of his importance. For any data you find on GoogleBooks, I strongly encourage you to use the Reftag tool I posted above to perfectly format your footnotes with one click. I also suggest you drop by the Discussion page of WP:WikiProject Opera to also solicit advice there. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:26, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I called it 'John Jacob Lyons and Genetic Priming' but this has evidently been edited. I am sure that the content of the article will be of interest to many in the field of evolutionary theory as well as many others. Advice please o Please see the name of article and my request above.

Greetings, your article need WP:Categories, please refer to a bio of a similar figure to get a feel for what cats are applicable. Also, it appears you only have one reference, which is not enough to substantiate WP:Notability (academics). Please provide multiple cases of third-party, reliable, substantive coverage of the subject. Also, rather than just drop references at the end of the article, please use WP:Footnotes so that we can tell which pieces of evidence are supporting which assertions. Feel free to post back here with any questions. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:15, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New article: Biographical information on influential 20th century classical guitarist inlcudes birth, artistic education, significant (historic) performances, pedagogical legacy, and death. Rguitphil (talk) 13:52, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks very solid overall, nice work! It's the sourcing that's absolutely key, and you've nailed that. One small thing: you can combine your categories into "Cuban classical guitarists" for better precision, and don't forget to add a death-date cat. Since the subject is deceased, under WP:Fair use note you can also upload one, low-resolution photo to the page (directly to en.wiki, not to the Commons), regardless of copyright. Image uploading is a little tricky the first time you do it, so ensure you fill out all the spots on the form and select "Fair Use - subject deceased" from the "Licensing" drop-down menu. Feel free to post back here if you get any error messages on your Talk page regarding any image you upload. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:20, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've added the death-date and "Cuban classical guitarists" categories, and checked those category listings, as well as the others. They are listed in each category under "J" for Jose, which was his first name. I realize that there could be some confusion regarding what letter to alphabetize under. Although his professional name used "Rey" as if it were his first name, it was actually his last name. His wife was Marianne Rey. The traditional use of names in Spanish speaking countries involves using the father's last name, followed by the mother's maiden name, hence, I would be Robert Phillips Pedrogo, although my last name is Phillips. In short, the correct place to list Jose Rey de la Torre is actually under "R" for Rey. I'm aware that this has the potential for causing some confusion, and changing the article name to "Jose Rey" - which is what he would have been called after emigrating to the U.S. had he not already become famous as "Rey de la Torre" - would render the article nearly irrelevant, since no one would be searching for him as Jose Rey. If you think that's confusing, Marianne and many of his friends and pupils called him "Che", which is a nickname for Jose, and some called him Jose, while others (myself included) stuck to using Rey as if it were his first name!
To summarize, I am of the opinion that in those categories he should be listed under "R" for Rey, his actual last name.

Make sure to always sign your posts on Talk pages, either by typing ~ four times or hitting the Signature button at the top of your editing window.
You raise some good points; note you can change how his name is filed alphabetically using Wikipedia:Default sorting. Further, if there are other names he's known by, you can create a page for a given name such as "Jose Rey" and then WP:Redirect that blank spot to land on your full-title article. If an article already exists for a different person named, for example Jose Rey, you apply WP:Disambiguation to make sure that people looking for the guitarist end up on your page. MatthewVanitas (talk) 18:54, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, take a look at some other classical guitarist bios and see if the use an WP:Infobox, the little box on the right margin holding basic stats. Adding one would help standardise the article. Also, again you can upload one low-res pic under WP:Fair use, which would really help to illustrate the article. Just make sure you very carefully fill out the whole upload form (the Upload button is on the right margin of your screen), as it is an extremely common noob error to get your image deleted for failing to add sourcing and licensing (Fair use - historical deceased subject) on the form. Would like someone to review this article so the "new unreviewed article" tag can be removed.

DLC (talk) 17:07, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, I've simplified your title (ranks/honorifics are not generally used), removed the "Unreviewed" tag but adding "more cats" and "link rot". Your page only has birth/death cats; look at some other pages for ministers and note what categories they use for denomination, location, etc. You're also a bit light on wikilinks; trying linking in more technical terms (like Congregationalist), locations which are not generally familiar, etc. Your article is also too long to be all one section; try subdividing it into three or more sections of content. Note too that articles are generally chronological; the birth/early life/education info you put at the end would normally go in a section right after the WP:Lede. The main thing you need to fix though is your footnotes; "Chicago Times" is not a citation; "Preacher Stirs Hearts. Chicago Times, 24 January 1923" is a proper citation. This is a major issue for WP:Link rot, as if the news-site ever moves its articles around, we'll have zero idea what specific issue/article you're trying to link us to at a now-broken link. So fix the above and you should be set. MatthewVanitas (talk) 04:10, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to ensure that my references and use of media is done correctly.

Aristofanis (talk) 23:00, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work overall, though you still need to add WP:Categories; I advise you check out a bio of a similar artist and base your cats on what you see there. Your references are pretty good, though in the Montreal Star footnote you don't state the title and date of the article you're quoting, so make sure you do that. It would also help if you could add a few more footnotes to online sources; offline sources are fine, but more online ones are good so other people can read your same sources if, for example, they want to write a school or journalism article. Since Wikipedia (and encyclopedias in general) aren't meant to be citeable references, it helps if others can trace your data back to your source online.
Make sure you click on your image and note it has some licensing issues you need to address, lest it be deleted.
The above aside, looks really solid. I'd say your good to publish once you add cats and fix your footnote citation (and maybe add a few more). If you have real trouble finding a licensable photo, you may want to contact an institution involved in the subject's career and see if they're willing to license one good photo to WP:Creative Commons so it can be displayed here. Once you get the image, you just need to file a WP:OTRS tag to prove it's copyright has been voluntarity waived by the owner.
Nice work overall, hope you'll stick around and write some more artist bios! Also recommend you swing by the Discussion page of WP:WikiProject Art and introduce yourself and your article once you hit the Move button to move it to the articlespaces. Folks, trying to publish an account my grand father, a pioneer of bringing community based evangelism to Ankola. As you can see, there is no mention of me or any other factors that try to elevate us. The reason i spent almost 40 hours to type this in was to make sure that the history of the town is not lost. best regards Samuel

Feel free to post back with any questions here, but I've standardised the title and added maintenance tags to the top of the article. MatthewVanitas (talk) 04:18, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
