Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Communications manager 2018

Wikimedia New York City (WMNYC) is volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit and an official chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation, the parent organization behind Wikipedia. WMNYC aims to connect the peoples and institutions of the New York metropolitan area with Wikipedia, Wikimedia, and the larger free-culture movement through public programming and formalized partnerships with libraries, museums, universities, and other non-profits. The organization seeks a Communications Program Manager to communicate these efforts to the Wikimedia movement and the wider public.

The person in this position will:

  • Create engaging content for social-media accounts, including Twitter and Facebook
  • Announce upcoming events to the Wikimedia NYC community
  • Contribute summaries of Wikimedia NYC events to communications channels within the Wikimedia community (e.g., This Month in GLAM and The Wikipedia Signpost)
  • Generate quarterly reports of Wikimedia NYC activities
  • Work collaboratively with the Wikimedia NYC Board to improve its web presence
  • Attend meetings and events as required

The successful candidate will possess skills and experience in the following areas:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience developing original content for professional social media accounts
  • Ability to communicate with event organizers and the WMNYC community in a clear and respectful manner

Preferred skills and experience:

  • Written communication skills in one or more languages other than English that are in use in the New York metropolitan area
  • Prior experience with Wikipedia or attendance at edit-a-thons
  • Experience working with minority communities

This is a part-time temporary contractor position, funded by a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia NYC anticipates an average of 7 hours per week at the rate of $27/hr.
