  • @Redrose64: Do you know what's the accuracy of UK geolocation at the moment? Deryck C. 11:53, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    Hopeless. http://geoiplookup.wikimedia.org/ has gone dead so I don't know where I currently geolocate to. But I am getting the recently-updated MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js, although puzzled why the extra parenthesis "(hosted by People\'s History Museum and Salford Girl Geeks)" is necessary - we don't normally include that. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:37, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    @Redrose64: I put in the bracket because it isn't a regular meetup. Alternatively we can have a separate GB geonotice for this event. Deryck C. 15:44, 10 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It seems no one watching this page anymore. See my request above. An important event failed just because the notice was not activated. --Saqib (talk) 09:29, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The geonotice isn't popping up for me, and it's not showing up on the automatically generated list map of geonotices listed earlier on this page. Could you please check on it for me? Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:56, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I should have spotted this - I think the coordinates were backwards! This happens sometimes and if it's east of the Mississippi, this would show on the map as a blob somewhere in the southern hemisphere, so easy to spot. But because there's no 111 South, it just doesn't appear on the map at all... I've switched them. Sorry for missing this. Andrew Gray (talk) 19:33, 10 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for fixing it! Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 16:17, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    @Mary Mark Ockerbloom: As it says in the instructions that you copypasted, we cannot target named cities. Also, that message is way too long: you're aiming for one line, two tops, at this font size. It's best to have just one link in your message. No need to prefix links with w: either, since this is Wikipedia, and it's redundant. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:32, 10 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    @Redrose64: Apologies, I had copied an older request. Hopefully this is an improvement. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 05:01, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    @Mary Mark Ockerbloom: [38,-78] 38°N 78°W / 38°N 78°W / 38; -78 is reasonable for one corner, but [41,76] 41°N 76°E / 41°N 76°E / 41; 76 is in Kyrgyzstan. Even if I invert the longitude, that makes [41,-76] 41°N 76°W / 41°N 76°W / 41; -76 which is west of both Philadelphia and NYC. --Redrose64 (talk) 12:31, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    @Redrose64: Heaven preserve me from jet lag, late nights and copy-paste errors. Oi. My apologies, Again. Though Kyrgyzstan definitely made me laugh. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 17:45, 11 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • User requesting: User:Dr. Blofeld & — Rod talk 20:00, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

  • This is the first time I have drafted one of these so could someone check it particularly the coordinates as I was unsure what was needed.— Rod talk 20:00, 14 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    The corners that you have selected - 51°N 7°E / 51°N 7°E / 51; 7 and 49°N 1°E / 49°N 1°E / 49; 1 - won't get any part of England (south-west or otherwise), they delineate all of Luxembourg, most of Belgium, plus parts of France, Germany and the Netherlands. It misses south-east England by about a mile, off Dungeness in Kent. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:23, 15 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks for checking. As I said I find these instructions confusing and on maps I'm looking at [51, 7] is in the Irish Sea & [49, 1] in the English Channel It may be the minus signs that are missing so could be [51, -7], [49, -1] . How about providing a map people could draw on? What I was aiming for is a rectangle including all of the listed counties (including Scilly Isles) so on Streetmap top left would be about N51:57 (51.95), W7:05 (-7.09) West of Haverford West to bottom right N49:55 (49.92), W1:25 (-1.42) English Channel below the Isle of Wight. It does include a bit of south Wales but I can't see how to avoid that. Does that makes sense?— Rod talk 07:20, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    51°57′N 7°05′W / 51.95°N 7.09°W / 51.95; -7.09 and 49°55′N 1°25′W / 49.92°N 1.42°W / 49.92; -1.42 might work, but it does still rely on geolocation being reasonably accurate, which for some ISPs, it demonstrably is not. --Redrose64 (talk) 19:46, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks that would work for me. I'm just learning about some of the difficulties with this. If you have any better suggestions that would be great but if not can we go with the ones you have suggested?— Rod talk 20:02, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    OK, I reckon that the required entry will be
    WestCountryChallenge_2016: {
      begin: '22 July 2016',
      end: '7 August 2016 23:00 UTC',
      corners: [ [ 51.95, -1.42 ], [ 49.92, -7.09 ] ],
      text: 'Win up to £250 (US$330) in Amazon vouchers for participating in [[Wikipedia:WikiProject England/The West Country Challenge|The West Country Challenge]] between 8 and 28 August, improving and creating articles related to the southwest of England.
    '
    },

    I altered "($330)" to "(US$330)" because there are many kinds of dollar. I also exchanged the lat/lon so that the pairs are top right, bottom left - it should be clearer to those examining the code that one of the corners 51°57′N 1°25′W / 51.95°N 1.42°W / 51.95; -1.42 is on the UK mainland - as it was, top left was just off the Irish coast, and bottom right was off Normandy. --Redrose64 (talk) 08:12, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    @Titodutta: We can't target more than one country by name - please give a set of geo-coordinates specifying the corners of the area covered, in the form [ latitude, longitude ], [ lat, lon ]. --Redrose64 (talk) 09:13, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    User:Redrose64, please do it for India (8°4' and 37°6' north lat), (68°7' and 97°25' east long) --Tito Dutta (talk) 21:13, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vizjim, congratulations on putting together the first Cypriot edit-a-thon! I think the message should have the meetup link in it somewhere, for instance:

  • Please join us at the first Cypriot wikithon at European University Cyprus (Nicosia). We'd like to improve the coverage of Cyprus drawing on the expertise of academics and Wikipedians alike.

Also, we will need to figure out the proper coordinates. I am not very good at that, but I can try to help you. Once we have that sorted out, I think I can post this for you -- I have not posted a GeoNotice before, but I have watched how it's done, and I'm an admin, so I should be able to do it.

As for the Greek and Turkish Wikipedias -- you will need an administrator on each one to implement it, they are separate processes on each wiki. Maybe each one has a page like this -- I'm not sure. Maybe ArielGlenn could help find a Greek Wikipedia administrator? -Pete (talk) 02:54, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Missed this earlier - now posted for all Cyprus. Can't do anything for Greek/Turkish, sadly. Andrew Gray (talk) 17:32, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • User requesting: Spike Wilbury (talk) 22:32, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

  • @Spike Wilbury: The landing page looks a bit confusing at the moment. Can you edit them so they give clear, separate joining instructions for the in-person events in Cornell and Arizona respectively? The two locations will require separate geonotice entries anyway so it may be useful to have two landing pages / links to two different sections of the same page. Deryck C. 16:36, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Deryck Chan: I am not organizing the event (merely assisting as a resident experienced editor) so I will reach out to the organizers and give them your feedback. There is a link to the registration form currently in two places on the page. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 22:56, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • Those two registration links seem to link to the same form, which is for the event at Mann Library. Deryck C. 23:31, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Spike Wilbury: Up as requested, one for NY and one for AZ. I agree with Deryck that this is pretty confusing - would be good if the organisers could clarify the setup (eg is the timescale the same for both?) Andrew Gray (talk) 21:37, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Andrew Gray and Deryck Chan, thank you. The events are concurrent and I'm in contact with the organizers to clarify on the Meetup page how the Arizona participants are supposed to sign up. --Spike Wilbury (talk) 23:35, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I haven't put the notices up yet. Andrew Gray has put up the notices. It'll be fairly easy to change the link targets when you have a new one. Deryck C. 15:08, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

  • Done. I've changed the text to "Please join us on 14 May at the second Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon." because we usually give the date on geonotice text. Deryck C. 22:39, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Fpl-dmatzrott: I've given it all of Maryland and a bit more because the area needs to be rectangular and there are no other notices running on the USA east coast at the moment. Please check that it's working for you. Deryck C. 22:40, 5 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Gobonobo: Done. Are you sure you don't want to include all of Minnesota? Geo-targeting is sometimes inaccurate and I guess you'll have guests from beyond Minneapolis. Deryck C. 23:12, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryck Chan: That could work too. I've placed invites on the talk pages of WikiProject Minnesota members. My rationale was that as this is only a two-hour event later in the day, the commute may make it less feasible for editors who are further away. gobonobo + c 23:33, 7 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Editors can always indef-hide specific notices for specific events that they can't make. :) Deryck C. 13:20, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks you a lot User:Deryck Chan. 72 editors from 18 Wikipedias have signed up so far. We are not getting too many participants from English Wikipedias. There are a large number of Indians in Nepal (4,000,000 Indians, India-enthusiasts unknown), Malyasia (2,400,000 Indians, United States (3,183,063), United Kingdom. I don't know exact Wikipedia count, but many editors edit Indian content from these countries. So far we are showing the notice to India IPs only, I am requesting to show the watchlist information to these editors also for the given time:
If all of these are not possible, please do the best you can suggest.
Possible updated notice: 70+ editors from 18 Wikipedias are participating in the Geographical Indications in India Edit-a-thon (25—31 January 2015). Join now. --Tito Dutta (talk) 21:15, 24 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Changed wording. Expanded to BD, NE, SG, MY, & AE for 2.5 days. Not doing US, UK, & AU because those regions often have local geonotices. Deryck C. 16:40, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryck Chan: Can the font size be decreased, please? --QEDK (T 📖 C) 15:03, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The font size is set by the gadget, it's the same for all geonotices. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:29, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I saw the source, why is the font size set to 144.5% in the first place (it means that I found the css page of the gadget as well). Maybe tweak it, please? --QEDK (T 📖 C) 05:32, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It's been 144% or thereabouts for as long as I can recall (6+ years); at one point during a major rewrite a few years ago it was made the same size as the rest of the page text, but there were complaints that it wasn't prominent enough, and people organising meetups, editathons and the like observed a drop in signup rates, so the previous font size was restored. --Redrose64 (talk) 23:59, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, alright then. I'd rather not piss off humble organizers. --QEDK (T 📖 C) 12:27, 29 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
