Welcome![edit]

Hey there and welcome to Wikipedia! Always nice to see newcomers like you: not only do you appreciate other folks helping you enough to want to thank them, but you also care enough to ask about the local etiquette about such things. :) Hope your Wikipedia experience so far has been enjoyable? AddWittyNameHere 02:01, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@AddWittyNameHere: Thank you! Appreciate the welcome and words of encouragement. Very much enjoying my time on Wiki so far. What a world! Did I respond to your message correctly?TateRay (talk) 23:12, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Mostly. You did the important things right: your ping got through, you signed your post, you responded below not above me. One small thing is that wiki custom is to indent your response one level further than whatever comment you're responding to, to make it easier to tell what comment ends where and who's responding to what comment. Not really a big deal on your own user talk in a one-on-one conversation, of course, but figured I'd let you know so you could get in the habit early. (Indenting is done by putting : in front of your message, with every : representing one level of indenting--so : for one, :: for two, and so on) Glad to hear you're enjoying yourself. :) Anything you're confused about so far? AddWittyNameHere 23:18, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AddWittyNameHere:Thanks for the indenting tip! Here's a question: do I write an 'Edit summary' for each entry on a Talk page? And should I click 'This is a minor edit' box for Talk entries?TateRay (talk) 23:43, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! It's usually good practice (though not strictly required) to add an edit summary on every edit, no matter how unimportant and/or uncontroversial. That said, they don't have to be elaborate explanations of what you're doing. "Replied to AddWittyNameHere" is fine, but so is a simple "replied" or even just "re". There's some abbreviations that are pretty common on en.wiki, and especially in edit summaries due to its character limits. They're pretty useful to know, and while you'll no doubt notice a fair few more yourself, these are some of the more common ones: Re=replied/responded, Rv=reverted, Rvv=reverted vandalism, Rmv (or just -)=removed, add (or +)=added/expanded, fx (or fix)=fixed, c/e (or just ce)=copy-edited.
Minor edits are just for edits that are only a superficial change, like typo-fixing, adding missed punctuation, adding that closing ref-tag someone forgot, fixing a broken template, things like that. Additionally, utterly uncontroversial maintenance edits and removal of blatant vandalism can also be safely marked minor. As responding to someone isn't any of those, don't mark them minor. (But if you notice after submitting that you accidentally forgot an indent or made a typo, the correcting edit can but doesn't have to be marked minor) As a guide of thumb, if in doubt, don't click "This is a minor edit". Thank you so much. Watch out I might ping you with more questions later down the road, if you're game. Have an awesome weekend! TateRay (talk) 01:31, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're quite welcome! And sure, I'm game. It's always a pleasure to help constructive new editors get a handle on the complexities of Wikipedia. :) One additional thing to know regarding indents: as you can imagine, in long conversations the text can get pressed into a quite narrow space, which makes it hard to read. There's a pretty simple solution for that, though: outdenting. That's what I just did up above—not quite necessary yet at this stage, but it makes for a good example. It's not difficult: all you need to do is start your message with {{od}}.

Thanks, and same to you! AddWittyNameHere 02:10, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was certainly starting to wonder about the indenting trash compactor. Appreciate your advice and support!TateRay (talk) 23:48, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Citation style 05-DEC-2019[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Specifically, the references you added to the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust article were plain URL's, when the article uses Citation Style 1. Any references you add to an article need to align with whichever style is already being used by that article, per WP:CITEVAR. Following that guideline in the future would be most appreciated. @Spintendo Thank you very much for the helpful message, I noticed the same citation style issue myself, and will get that figured out.TateRay (talk) 17:39, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
