July 2022[edit]

Hello, I'm Adakiko. I noticed that you made an edit to a biography of a living person, Coatbridge, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. Wikipedia has a strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Adakiko (talk) 12:09, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The person I refer to is now deceased (and was known to me personally). He does not have a standalone Wiki biography so I am unable to provide a direct source link. Stepan fetchette (talk) 13:45, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not add or significantly change content without citing verifiable and reliable sources, as you did with this edit to Coatbridge. Before making any potentially controversial edits, it is recommended that you discuss them first on the article's talk page. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Coasterlover1994 14:07, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously I'm an amateur at this. It used to be a lot easier to edit Wiki pages. I can see how this is suppposed to work so can you help me out here? I have a link to a page at Google Arts that confirms my edit. William Sinnott — Google Arts & Culture. Stepan fetchette (talk) 14:51, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Edits to Coatbridge[edit]

Several issues here. People need to meet wp:notability (people) to be listed in this manner. His association with The Shamen is allows him to be mentioned in the The Shamen article, but Sinnott needs to have an article, or references (which support his meeting notability) to be mentioned in the Coatbridge article. Content in Wikipedia needs to be wp:verifiable especially biographies (and more so to wp:biographies of living persons (BLP)). As no reference was added with your content in the Coatbridge article, it did not meet verifiability. Such a reference(s) would need to show notability, association with Coatbridge, and his drowning. Note: There is no mention of Coatbridge in The Shamen article.

The Shamen article mentions his drowning and cites The True Story of Acid House.... A Google search on the book does not return any hits for "Sinnott", "drowning", "Will" (for a person), or "William" (not obviously associated with Shamen or Sinnott). I tried a number of misspellings for "Sinnott" without any hits. It does return six hits for "shamen" and nine for "died". None of those hit pages are available for preview. The hits do show a few lines which do not mention Shamen or anyone associated with them that I found.

See wp:citing sources and the tool for doing so discussed in help:referencing for beginners. help:introduction if you are interested. I hope this explains Wikipedia today. Cheers Adakiko (talk) 20:03, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I get it. You are making value based decisions about who can and cannot get a mention on Wikipedia. I won't argue with your policies. Stepan fetchette (talk) 23:39, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is not my policy, I'm just a volunteer. wp:Policy is generated usually by wp:consensus of Wikipedia volunteers. Feel free to join in at the wp:Village pump.
If you think Sinnott, you, or someone else meets notability guidelines, please create his page. See wp:Article for Creation.
I presume that you realize if anyone could create their own article irregardless of notability, there would be hundreds of millions of such articles on Wikipedia. Social media is probably a better place for that. Cheers Adakiko (talk) 23:54, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Adakiko of course I appreciate that Wikipedia has rules, I use it daily and I make donations, I know how you work.
I knew Will personally, and before he was involved with the Shamen. I thought a memorial of sorts might be appropriate and I'm a little saddened that he doesn't qualify as a person of interest.
That aside, 30 years is a very long time and thank you for your info and advice. Stepan fetchette (talk) 09:41, 18 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
