Please next time propose such doubtful, subjective, non-obvious name changes on the talk page first. Then wait some time if no one objects and only then change the name. Andries (talk) 09:02, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

re hello

Hi Sm8900, i am well. I have not really done much editing of IvP articles lately because I have a) been quite busy in real life and b) been editing other topics like finance/economics. I have found editing the latter topics much more enjoyable as generally you don't have to deal with the constant frustration and bias inherent in middle east history topics. Was there anything in particular you would like me to look at? To be honest, having experienced how refreshing it is to edit finance/eco, my motivation to do large scale edits in IvP has waned significantly - although i'll probably randomly make some edits here and there if i feel like it. Please see the discussion in Talk:The New York Times and the Holocaust#Seeking Consensus. You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:55, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

hmmm, sounds good. okay, thanks!!! will try to pitch in and use this in a helpful manner. thanks for your note and for your efforts on this. --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 14:40, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles. See the Article Wizard.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on Gamigo Games requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, individual animal(s), an organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Wyatt Riot (talk) 10:55, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I have nominated Begin (computer game), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Begin (computer game) (2nd nomination). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Marasmusine (talk) 10:06, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

The article Crafton family sailing voyage was proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

not appropriate material for an encyclopedia - see WP:NOTNEWS, noting the words "most newsworthy events do not qualify for inclusion".

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. PamD (talk) 21:26, 2 August 2010 (UTC)

Lost

I see you made a large string of edits to the Lost page recently so I was wandering if you could voice your opinion HERE, the general consensus is to have the infobox order as credit order, obviously Lost hasn't, but it's also too late to change it. So if you could put your opinion there as a final closure, I'll add it as a guideline. Thank you Jayy008 (talk) 13:23, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I really appreciate your note. however, I'm sorry, but I don't really have an opinion on this issue. thanks anyway. you may want to ask some editor(s) who works on this kind of detail more often. thanks. --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 16:02, 26 September 2010 (UTC)
No problem. Thanks for the reply! Jayy008 (talk) 20:09, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

Reverting Arbiters on a Case talk page

Clearly, I'd hoped you would figure out that reverting on a case page is not an appropriate way to handle things. Reverting an Arbiter, more than once on the same issue, without discussion or even bothering to drop a note even more so. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them, but you will receive a ban from the case pages if you revert again. Shell babelfish 16:24, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi. hmmm...ok, whoops sorry about that. I actually had not realized you were an arbitrator. sorry about that. Ok, I understand. i will be careful. thanks. (Just checked Wikipedia:Arbitration_Committee#Current_members; sorry, didn't realize.) --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 17:14, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
No worries. Like I said, I'm happy to answer questions. Many of the discussions, if they aren't specifically about the case, should probably happen in a place where more of the community will notice and can get involved. For threads that start out being about the decisions get off topic or attacks start being thrown around, there's no issue in re-starting a productive discussion about the initial topic even after the problematic thread was hatted. No prob. I've used your wording ("the public aspects of science") and inserted it in proposal 5. However, it looks like we may have to through an RfC to implement the change; SlimVirgin feels it is too wide-ranging to just base on a dozen editors' input at WP:V (see Wikipedia_talk:Verifiability#Current_status). --JN466 22:00, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Formal end of The Battle of Gettysburg

Hi Steve. I agree July 4 1863 was a pivotal day in the course of the war. It is remarkable that the victory at Vicksburg and the beginning of the Southern retreat from the North, both of which were critical turning points in the war, both happened on the same day, which happened to be Independence Day. I'm a bit uncomfortable with the phrase "formal end to the battle" though. Is it true that the formal end to a battle begins when one side retreats, instead of the end of hostilities? I see your point, but the 3rd is widely considered to be then end of the battle, and I worry labeling the 4th as the formal end may cause confusion. I don't see anything in the Battle of Gettysburg article to support the "formal" terminology, but I haven't read through it and all the associated pages (well, I certainly have in the past, but not recently). How about something like:

A very rough draft, needs linking and some rewording and what not. What do you think? Cheers. Winston365 (talk) 04:29, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

hmmm. Well I think that sounds good. the reason that i used the phrase "formal end" is that i believe the battle does formally end when one side withdraws from the field. the reason for this is that even though normally the battle ends the minute that the fighting stops, normally that moment is precisely when one side surrenders to the other, or else when the losing army is forced to retreat. there is no guarantee the fighting is over if both armies are still sitting there. the Battle of Gettysburg is kind of a real rarity in that respect. however, i think i can accept your phrasing as shown here. thanks! --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 19:45, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
Ok, cool. I'll make the change in the next day or so. Thanks! Winston365 (talk) 07:24, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
have made an addditional change, as shown above after strike-through. what do you think? --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 18:30, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
I like it, your wording is better. I added some internal links. It may not be perfect, but I'm happy with it. If you are happy let's add it. Winston365 (talk) 21:43, 24 November 2010 (UTC)
sounds good! thanks. --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 20:50, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject US Presidents

Robot - Lead

Hi

I have restored the lead for the article. You moved much of the material under the premise:

  • "Sm8900 (talk|contribs) (89,183 bytes) (as per WP:LEAD) (undo)"

I suspect you misread the MOS guideline. It says that articles with "More than 30,000 characters" can have a lead of "Three or four paragraphs". The Robot article has 40,533 characters (you can get the DYK script to help you count characters).

I hope this explains why I have reinserted the material as the lead. Chaosdruid (talk) 18:32, 30 June 2011 (UTC)

thanks, but you sort of misunderstood my basis for the change, it wasn;t the length i was looking at. it was this part of the guideline.

The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview of the article. It should define the topic, establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points—including any prominent controversies. The emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic, according to reliable, published sources, and the notability of the article's subject should usually be established in the first few sentences.

I feel that the materials on the origins for robots from past centuries does not pertain to the lead, but belongs in a section of the article. --Steve, Sm8900 (talk) 13:22, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
