I think likewise - for sure by say the 9/9, but 31/8 may be just too much. I'm just home from work half an hour ago, and the rest of the week looks busy with work and family, so, not to overreach, I'm setting myself a mental target of <500 by 31/8, and bonus marks for every hundred below that! And now clear, not do-able by 31/8, at least from my side, just too much of RL - work and family, both with important aspects this week - but let's keep 9/9 in mind, I think we can make that. 30-50 a day seems to be the realistic rate, but if we stretch that a little... I do wonder why we keep having this come up when RoI is in daily use - including by Ministers, in the Dail, in civil service documents, etc., whether it should ideally be or not. Republic of Ireland article

You seem to have deleted a few edits on the Republic of Ireland from an editor who has since been banned and I know was a friend of yours. Do you care to give any explanation? They seem to not really relate to a summary of Ireland, remember, this page is about Ireland the country itself and we are only touching on things at a high level in the lead, there is a separate page on the Irish economy if you wish to edit there. It also seems to be an area which I would wager is significantly outside your area of expertise based on previous edits. Have you reviewed the type of information that appears in the lead for other countries around the world to see if these are comparable? You also appear to have deleted links to the respective links contained within the Lists of countries by GDP per capita which in themselves contain a very deep dive on the issue. Hello Financefactz. I reverted a set of edits, which had lacked (edit summary - a good idea on every edit) explanation, and recommended discussion on Talk, that's all. You seem to be drawing inferences which border on personal, and guesswork, and this I am not entirely happy about. Ex-user Britishfinance, whose account was blocked for unknown reasons, was not a friend - I don't have enough time to spend on Wikipedia for that, and we do mostly keep our personalities off-Wiki - but an editor some of whose work (and whose huge work pace, facilitated by a sabbatical or some such) I was positive about - they got stuck into mountains and hills, some kinds of patrol work and xFD handling, and yes, some neglected aspects of finance. I gather they did admirable work on other topic areas also, and there was even some muttering about Admin potential. Did that editor got a bit OTT on some topics, and repeat points, and over-reference at times... yes. The tiny effective tax rates some companies pay on huge declared incomes are something noted by multiple economists and journalists, as well as the US government and others, and which annoy ordinary people - but this matter should be considered in a balanced way (no whitewash / any green jersey stuff, but in context, and with academic rigour), and no personal agenda should apply. Now, many of us did notice that you came into Wikipedia with, in part, a "mission" to counter some of that editor's work ("captured pages", etc.), and that was a curious thing - but you have also, between your accounts, done work I admire, notably on buildings. As for me, I generally confined my edits on Britishfinance's work, and confine any on any related edits since, to copyediting, and policy-based review. I may act on any edits to articles like those on the country, the island and Dublin city, rather than on specific topics. That said, I have a qualification with a focus on finance, so I understand the area, I just primarily edit elsewhere - but I can and do edit on almost anything, guided by policy, as my history shows.
I do think the issue touched on here rates a brief (one-sentence, say) mention, but I will not edit further on this matter, and suggest you might also leave it to other editors, raising a question on Talk if needed..? On the links point, I thought two links at that stage was perhaps over the top, and for later, or the deeper article, but I also see the value, and sent thanks on your re-application of them. And hi again, Financefactz, and glad to see further improvement in the article. In particular I just logged back in in time to see your edit comment on the imbalance of the economics section. I fully agree - I've brought this up before - that section should lead with all of agri-related, pharma-, tech, financial and tourism industries, and it is quite bizarre that some of the main drivers of the economy are so poorly reflected. Someone with the right experience could do something pithy and relevant quite easily, otherwise those of us less expert should rework the section eventually. And then reflect this back into the lede. Hi onel5969, I take the point, thanks, and I appreciate that such an experienced editor is keeping an eye. I did note the tag - I'm not so long an AfC volunteer, and I am trying to be extra careful - and I also noted the tone of the piece, notably the middle parts, so I double-checked the references, and toned down some of the language. Then I tried to assess the article's merits "cold." I had some concerns about the focus of activity being as recent as 2022, but on the other hand, I did seem to see enough momentum in the subject's life and running activity and activism to reach notability. But I will absolutely take a further look, and ping the submitting editor for more input. Any further advice welcome, SeoR (talk) 14:01, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
I'm loathe to re-draft an article that one of our AfC reviewers has passed, and this is about the only instance I would consider it. My concern is not the tone of the article, I trust that you have cleansed it. My concern is my utmost abhorrence of UPE editing. My belief, and there is no policy on this, is that UPE/COI articles should remain in draft until the concern is addressed properly. But regardless, now that you're aware of it, I'll leave it in your capable hands. And thanks for the efforts you're putting in over at AfC. Keep it up. It's a thankless task. Thanks for the kind words, and the prompt reply. Thankless maybe, but I've come across some nice pieces with real potential. Unfortunately there does seem to be a definite thread of "semi-professional" behind many of the submissions. I share the loathing for sneaky paid editing - the sad thing is that if someone has learnt some of the ways of Wikipedia so well, they could really help us, if they could just, please, respect the volunteer community in how they do it. I will pursue the matter, so the point is clearly run-through with the submitter, and will re-review the article too. It is important that UPE is not accidentally rewarded with any kind of easy ride. I was so glad to see my slightly impulsive article scheduled for this important day, even without the offered photo - and then halfway through the day, it was somehow promoted to the lead slot, with picture, even better. And to complete the marking of the day, I am about to bring forward a new article on a female subject, another glass ceiling thoroughly broken as our National Library in Ireland goes from first to second female director (via a female acting director).   • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Nationality

WP:CONTEXTBIO is very clear. Nationality is based on context. If a writer is born in Ireland, but doesn't write in Ireland, moves to Australia, starts writing in Australia, is recognized for their writing in Australia: then they are an Australian writer, not an Irish one.

Nationality is not the same as citizenship. In modern usage, any long-term resident is a national. Becoming a citizen extends voting and other privileges but WP:CONTEXTBIO says "country, region, or territory, where the person is currently a citizen, national, or permanent resident". Dervla McTiernan is clearly currently a permanent resident of Australia.

WP:CONTEXTBIO also specifically prohibits hyphenated "nationalities" and the use of "X-born Y" construction. If she had been notable as a writer before leaving Ireland, which she was not, then we would say "Irish and Australian writer". Skyerise (talk) 10:27, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello Skyerise, and thanks for engaging, especially as that article clearly would benefit from further work. There would be a case for having this debate on the talk page of the article, but let's continue here for one round, for efficiency, and if we need a broader debate, perhaps with others joining, we could jump to the subject article for that.
As an opening point, on Wikipedia, few policies are absolutely binding, and there can be room for nuance (and this particular policy has often been debated, and is quite often shaded in usage). Now, I agree re. your opening statement - but the policy does allow a qualifier - "neither previous nationalities nor the country of birth should be mentioned in the lead unless relevant to the subject's notability" - and Ms McTiernan has always been promoted as an Irish figure who moved to Australia, not an Australian-born one, and I have often seen her described as an Irish writer (but I did not revert your removal of Irish writer categories, respecting the policy). For example, if we Google the name, the first non-WP result is "Irish writer", and the author's current Twitter identity is tagged as "Irish living in Perth".
"National" is a complex concept, and I don't think many would see the definition as as simple as "= permanent resident" - but I'd hope that no one disputes that this subject is a permanent resident. However, the idea that someone magically become solely a national of a new country is not one I would agree wholly works.
Further, there is no specific prohibition on hyphenated nationalities, which are very common in the real world - I should know, coming from a country with one of the biggest such populations, the 30+ million Irish-Americans. Wikipedia reports on the world as it is, and dual nationality (and higher mixes) are perfectly normal and descriptive, and certainly I would not like to announce that we've somehow decided to try to abolish the concept! Likewise "x-born y" is a good way of accounting for certain personal circumstances. The policy does give an example, of someone who specifically moved in childhood and always identified as American, and so is not described as Russian-American, or even Jewish-Russian / American, but that's an example, not a prohibition. However, for clarity and simplicity, we can look to keep the lede clear of complexity on these issues.
All that said, we're here to work together, so let's find an approach that gives the facts in a way that a general reader would understand, and that the subject might agree describes themselves; I will not over-argue these points. Regards, SeoR (talk) 13:55, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
What I have said above is the general consensus and has been thoroughly discussed at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography. The examples follow the consensus. The problem is that A-B is interpreted as ethnicity-nationality: it's not a nationality. For currently living people, their nationality in context is where they live and produce their work. It is consensus that unless the birth nationality is important to the subject's notability, it doesn't get discussed in the lead, but is detailed in the "Early life" section. If the answer to "How many books did the subject write in Irelend?" is zero, then calling them an "Irish writer" is a misnomer. Skyerise (talk) 14:03, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi again. On "promote", I refer to how the person is presented in newspaper / magazine or similar articles - some of which are RS - not to marketing. Further, Ms McTiernan has described herself as an Irish person living in Australia (and does so now in her Twitter header), not an Australian. Which I am sure is not making any kind of point - the subject clearly appreciates both countries - beyond how the person sees things. I am aware of the consensus, though I'd say it's one that many editors just work around - and I will not re-edit what you have changed today. I do think there is a potential issue - but if it needs further exploration, that should happen on the article's Talk page. In closing, I would dispute that the policy prohibits dual nationality descriptions, etc., unless I am missing some specific few words, but I don't think we need to get into an argument about that. No person born in the US should be described as "Irish-American" in the lead sentence, regardless of whether they call themselves that. Irish here is being used in the archaic sense of "nationality", for which we now use the word "ethnicity". We don't call Black Americans "African-American" in the lead either. Americans are simply Americans, unless they have relocated or formally acquired an additional citizenship. And even then it is only mentioned if it is relevant: e.g. they have emigrated after becoming notable, and we use 'and' because not to do so is ambiguous and interpreted differently by English speakers in different English-speaking countries. Some Irish Americans might disagree, but anyway, that's another issue. Nice find with that Australian passport article, and while there is a later article which still has the "Irish writer" bit too, I think we can consider this matter closed, and the article has been improved in the process. There is the potential to expand, both on the work, and on the personal life (the health scare, the adaptations, the novellas, etc.), but it's a solid piece. Glad you approve. But "Some Irish Americans might disagree" is exactly why we distinguish nationality from ethnicity in WP:CONTEXTBIO. People of Irish descent are not the only group that wants to interpret ethnicity as nationality. It leads to endless edit-warring by people with "ethnic pride" against our clear policy of describing people by their nationality in the modern usage of the term to mean citizenship or residence, but not descent. Robert Ballagh rejection, and citation

Hello SeoR. I see you have been busy contributing to the Robert Ballagh article. Thanks for all the extra work you did.

I'm intrigued by this: "One stamp design was rejected by the government, after stamps had already been printed, possibly due to political interference; the stamps and plates were destroyed." What was the theme or design of the stamp that was rejected? It might be interesting to see that explanation added to the article, but if not, I'd be satisfied by an answer here.

I also saw what looks like a typo that needs attention. In the Painting and other plastic arts section, after the following text, "he also painted his family on an extended 1978 holiday near Malaga, in Winter in Ronda (1979)" there is a footnote that looks like this: [5]: 9<167. The page numbering looks improbable in scope (9–167) and there is a less-than sign instead of a dash between the numbers.

Many thanks Spideog; I enjoyed the edit run. I follow some aspects of the arts and was just a bit shocked at an article on a painter which barely mentioned painting, exhibitions, etc., and thankfully Ballagh has a fairly high profile and it was not so hard to dig up material. And as I happens, I saw grounds for an article on one of his children too (the other has their own car sales operation). On the typo, I appreciate the heads up and will fix this.
So, the stamp - yes, it would probably be good to add that anecdote, as it ties into Ballagh's broader (limited) relationship with Charlie Haughey. In fact, I think a sub-section on that relationship might be appropriate. Ahead of doing that addition - I'll probably only have a chance after work - I can summarise from Ballagh's own writing; the account goes: Ballagh had an agreed design for the bicentenary of the French Revolution (it was part of a pan-European project between post offices), which had been thought to have completed the internal and (often nominal) higher approval processes, with the metal plates made and first batches (at least several thousand sheets) of stamps run off. Suddenly, he got a call to say it was being pulled. He was not happy, and Charlie actually brought it up in conversation, and intimated that it was a (late) Government decision (as, technically, stamp issues should pass the Cabinet, even if it's usually a brief mention, probably with a very small picture, far down an order paper). However, when the second most senior member of Cabinet later spoke to Ballagh, wondering where the attractive stamp had gone to (showing that ministers had indeed seen the design), Ballagh realised that the rejection had been, as it was put, a "solo run" by the Taoiseach (which is not something the process officially allows for - it's the Cabinet's (dis-)approval, not Taoiseach's.) He suspected that the intervention might have been to allow for an artist more favoured by Haughey to have a go but in fact, the late scrapping of the issue simply led to Ireland being (something noted in Paris) one of just 2 countries (the other being the UK) involved not having a stamp for the occasion.
