Black Moshannon State Park

Creeks

You might wonder why I've been reading White Deer Hole Creek. It's because I've been using Larrys Creek as a model for Johnson Creek (Willamette River), which I've been pushing from stub class to something more complete. The two creeks are remarkably similar in length but remarkably dissimilar in other ways. Johnson Creek, though making something of a comeback, is urban and has been abused for many decades. I had no clear idea of how to do a creek when I started, but I learned a lot by imitating what I saw on the Larrys Creek page. That led me to White Deer Hole Creek, also pretty much your doing, also FA, and also of similar length. Excellent models, for which I say thanks. Finetooth (talk) 17:28, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

List of The Bellflower Bunnies episodes

photos status

Hi I looked at the Pennsylvania source for the photo you asked me about. I have to say I don't know if it is appropriate to use that photo or not, it's not entirely clear to me. Facts and arguments to consider include: Not all NRHP photos, even ones on the U.S. National Park Service website, are public domain. Those that are labelled as NPS owned, or that are labelled as haven been taken by a NPS staff person who visited the site, are clearly works of the Federal government and in the public domain. However, they also use photos labelled clearly as courtesy of some organization that owns the photo. Or the photograph is a new photo taken by a private consultant, or by a state employee, or otherwise. This photo is in the last category. The NPS website has a statement that NOT all photos are in the public domain. I am not successful right now in finding the main NPS.Gov copyright statement that I recall, but this one relating to the HABS program copyright info related to HABS pics includes this statement: "Materials created or published by the U.S. Government in collaboration with a non-U.S. Governmental individual or agency may or may not be in the public domain. Materials fitting this category may require additional background research." Photos are not accepted into HABS unless they are all fully released into the public domain, but photos can be used to support NRHP applications without them being released.

Some other Pennsylvania examples might help:

  • There isn't an accompanying set of photos available with the Joseph Priestley House's NRHP Inventory/Nomination document, but there is for the Drake Oil Museum NRHP document, its photoset is here: "Accompanying 5 photos, historic and from 1970." (PDF). (872 KiB). Note for several of its photos there is a "NRHP Property Photograph Form" which conveys that the photo is part of the NPS's Historic Sites Survey. Negative is owned by the NPS, hence it is Federal government, hence it is public domain.

In your case, the photo credit is not entirely clear. I would tend to believe the photos were taken by John Milner Associates, the "Local survey organization" on the Pennsylvania Historic Resource Survey Form. I assume they are be private consultants. Copyright of the photos could still belong to them, or it could belong to Pennsylvania, neither of which would put them into the public domain. Just submitting the photos as part of backup to the National Park Service, which even if you assume they did do that, does not put them into the public domain. So, bottomline, I do not see that these are clearly public domain, and hence I personally might not choose to use them. Certainly one could use them with little likelihood of anyone complaining though. It certainly also could be the case that Pennsylvania owns them and would freely give over use under GFDL, if asked, for all of their photographs, but I don't believe that anyone from WP:NRHP has yet approached any state department of archives and history for such permissions.

Lucas Carpenter

Hey, I just want to say that I am new to the whole adding articles thing. I am still getting used to to the talk feature so forgive me if I do not comment to the deletion discussion appropriately. I just want to point out that, regarding the article about Lucas Carpenter I have been editing, there is not a lot of information on the artist and therefore can not be as descriptive as other artists. He is an up and coming artist who has yet to be signed. He also does not have an official website and uses Myspace as a makeshift site. The information for this article was taken from that, hence the reference. I have been following the artist since 2000 and since he is getting popular and just completed his first cross country tour, I felt it was a good time to try to help him get his name out there. If there is anyway you could maybe offer me some ideas or pointers in anyway to keep this from getting deleted I would appreciate it. Well I couldn't stay away. I added some about Mid-State Regional Airport and the Keystone Opportunity Zone which could be articles, remain as red links or get de-linked. I have looked and looked for evidence that the airport was built by the CCC and haven't found it, but I am pretty sure it was. The CCC did build an airstrip at Cherry Springs State Park. Hmm, just been perusing Wikipedia:School and university projects/ENTO 431. It advocates the use of a "Conclusion" section. I'm not convinced. I know these are pseudo-academic papers which we're dealing with here, but does Wikipedia really need that type of format? Just interested in your opinion. Peer review for LSWR N15 class article.

Thank you for your peer review, which is being considered. Some of the points you have raised have been addressed, or are in the process of being addressed. However, there are a couple of issues that I wish to clarify. I believe that there is no need to wikilink all names of the locomotives to their counterpart in Arthurian legend, as this has already been done on the List of King Arthur class locomotives page. Also connected with this, Sir Lamiel is only listed in Thomas Malory's book Le Morte d'Arthur, as Sir Lamiel of Cardiff. Other than that, very little is known.

Hi, I was reading though your FLC, which brought me to read the article about Larrys Creek and White Deer Hole Creek. Seeing as you found an amazing amount of information on these fairly minor creeks, do you think you could work on Wappingers Creek or give me some suggestions? I know the creek does have a fairly interesting history, mainly because of the Indian tribe called the Wappingers, so I'll probably have enough info to write in the article. Those are also very good creek articles, but I doubt I'll be able to write that much about the Wappingers Creek. I figured it'll look closer to Moodna Creek. Hello Ruhrfisch. It might be time for a decision about this article that you left a report about at COIN. This is not a guy who has an academic rank like full professor, so it's hard to locate him in that way. I believe that an AfD nomination should be considered, since actual reliable sources that write about him are thin. I don't believe he is a Fellow of the IEEE or any of those kind of big organizations. If you still feel like going forward with an AfD, I might be able to help collect some data. Take a look at Category:SETI and see if you think his achievements will match what is found in that group. Otherwise, the article ought to be stubbified. Most of the material written about him does appear to be self-published, though the self-published material is written in an engaging way. Let me know how you would like to proceed. Peer Review question

Hi, Ruhrfisch, I have a question for you. I saw that you're listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/volunteers under "Geography", but is my impression (from what you and your fellow volunteers have stated) correct in that Geography is only for places (countries, cities, towns, lands, buildings, bodies of water, etc, etc) and cannot include people? I ask because my newest endeavor, Bob Marshall (wilderness activist), was recently listed as a GA under the Geography heading -- "Geography and places good articles", to be exact. So, according to PR standards, was I correct to add it to the "Geography" category? It seems kind of out of place next to Tel Aviv and Campus of Texas A&M University; I'm also afraid it won't garner any attention. Feedback would be much appreciated! Kannada literature

Actually there is no cause for that tag. A couple of editors who opposed the article in FAC are just trying to kick up some dust. The word feudatory and Vassal are equally applicapble, though the former is more used by historians, because of the feudal nature of ancient Indian society. Well, there are probably a couple revisions of the page that I would rather not be what people see as a first impression, because of the edit summaries, you can just peruse the first few and see at least one revision with a pretty derogatory edit summary, maybe those could go away? The version I put up of my page is probably the one that would be best to keep if you think it's just better to save the one revision, as you mentioned in your note on my talk page.

You commented on the two pictures of the Bagpiper statue, but I only see one, did I miss one? Also you mentioned "Why not just a section called Fountains, then make a subarticle on just the fountains if you want." Do you mean just cut the sub-section headings off, or spin this material into another article then briefly talk about the fountains with a Main:Fountains of Berne at the header? There's absolutely no hurry on either PR or GA review. The Wikipedia tasks are essentially uncountable, and I like a lot of them and hop happily from one to another. Speaking of hopping, I've done two GA reviews, Hanford Site (now FA) and Quantock Hills since you first suggested the idea to me, and I'll plan to help out with PR too. I never sought a formal PR before yesterday, and I never looked at any of the formal reviews or sorted out how the system worked. Misplaced village?

The village of Belle Terre, New York is shown in the middle of Long Island Sound on the New York State map in its article. Appraiser has tried to fix it. Unless my browser (Firefox) is messed up, the pushpin still shows the village in the water. Maybe you can take a look and get it on land in Long Island? Thanks. My reply to the message you left on my talk page: Yes, I cleared cache in Firefox and even tried MS Internet Explorer 7. Both show the same thing. If you see it okay and I don't, I'll assume it's a problem with me and my browsers, or maybe my monitor resolution. Just a wild guess. I notice that the map image is from Wikimedia Commons. That could mean the image is on a different set of Wiki servers from the Wikipedia mainspace article and template. The problem still exists. I asked one of the guys I work with, who is currently in Taipei, Taiwan, to access the page and he sees the pushpin for the village in the middle of Long Island Sound about halfway between Long Island and Connecticut. I see it too. But I checked the northern and southern edge latitudes on Template:Location map USA New York and the coords of the town and they all seem right. I tried to check that and found that most of the locations that use this map are in Long Island. Most look reasonable, acknowledging it's kind difficult to fit a pushpin on that narrow strip of land. Most of the other locations in New York use another map. The ones that use this map seem to be okay, although it's hard to tell sometimes since they are in teh middle of the state. PR space

Thanks (as always) for doing the archiving. Are you back up to 14 days, or are you still archiving some reviews sooner?

The latest archive only brought things down to 1.8 MB, and we can't keep walking on a knife edge like this, so I've trimmed some of the template code to save another 200KB. This is really a bug in the new mediawiki preprocessor, but there is no sign of it being fixed, so we have to live with it.

It is also partly my fault for the design of the automated SAPR notices, which are expensive in terms of space because they transclude the "onlyinclude" sections of the entire months SAPRs twice per article. I did a test, and removing these saves another 250KB. Unfortunately, I can't think of another way to do it without inconveniencing you in your valuable work. I will see if Carl has any ideas. Maps

Thanks again for the tips. I love maps and certain kinds of graphs like Minard's of Napoleon's very bad no good trip to Moscow and back:Image:Minard.png. Your method sounds complicated, though not more so than necessary. I will have to give it a try. I like learning how to do new things. By the way, your suggestions on Johnson Creek have produced some interesting results. I had not given any particular thought to the political border crossings, for example, but now see that the creek meanders back and forth between counties a total of eight times. Also, it is not true that the creek crosses six political boundaries but merely five. My sources incorrectly counted a city, Happy Valley, that's in the watershed but not touched by the creek. It's quite clear and well-written, and I have a pretty good idea of the amount of work it took. I'm soldiering on with Johnson Creek but postponing dealing with map questions. I added some data today about nearby watersheds, and that got me to thinking about a second watershed map that would show them all in relation to the JC watershed. Agreed all the articles in the West Branch area would be pretty easy to boost up. The history of Greenwood Furnace State Park is pretty interesting, but it's out of the area and on the wrong side of the mountains. I think getting Worlds End up to FA should be the next project. Worlds End State Park

Well I started working on expanding Worlds End State Park. We don't have to get to this right away, but we can if you want. I am not sure if you want to work on the bridge first. So this leads me to my question. Did the Susquehannock inhabit the area? I would bet that they did? This will enable us to move some of the history from Black Mo to here. I already moved the general CCC and Lumber historys but will wait to move the general Native American history until I hear back from you. Dredg peer review

Thank you for taking the time to review the Dredg article. I will begin work on correcting the issues you brought up. I do have a quick question for you. There is a good bit known about a few of their early recordings, such as Conscious and Orph; however, there are few sources that Wikipedia would constitute as "reliable" based off Wikipedia:RS, as little was written about them at the time and the writing since has focused on newer material.
