Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Sign your messages with four tildes (~~~~), be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Happy editing! Cheers, Tacyarg (talk) 01:23, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Please stop over-linking

Articles do not benefit from being a sea of blue, especially for common words that English speaking people will understand (horse, dog, United States...). Also, do not link the same word over and over again. One mosque is enough. And do not create a sea of red wikilinks for names of people for whom it is unlikely there will ever be an article written. David notMD (talk) 03:08, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

Stubs

Thank you for your recent edit to Evarcha rotundibulbis, but please take care not to add {{stub}} to an article which already has a specific stub tag, and remember that all stub tags go at the foot of the article, not above the categories - see WP:ORDER. Thanks. PamD 05:58, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Romanian leu

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Romanian leu you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Your GA nomination of Romanian leu

The article Romanian leu you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Romanian leu for reasons why the nomination failed. Overtone (musical group)

As I pointed out already, I did a search for the band's name and members' names on Newspapers.com, Google Books, World Radio History (which archives music magazines such as Billboard), and I found nothing at all. Congratulations, and thank you for helping expand the scope of Wikipedia! We hope you will continue making quality contributions.

Hi! Thanks for helping out at the Teahouse. I noticed this edit of yours and thought I should point you to Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Editing others' comments. Sewing Genie moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Sewing Genie, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:37, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

I've left a comment on your Articles for Creation submission, which can be viewed at Draft:Sewing Genie. Thanks! Robert McClenon (talk) 21:39, 14 June 2022 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for June 15

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited M90 motorway, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Terminus and Tarmac. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Notice

The article (viii) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not sure how a single Roman Numeral is notable for a standalone article. This is a dictionary definition, which Wikipedia is not, supplemented with a piece of trivia from a predatory journal.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Complex/Rational 22:30, 4 August 2022 (UTC)

Nomination of (viii) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article (viii) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/(viii) until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article until the discussion has finished.

Information icon Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to Sumbawa does not have an edit summary. You can use the edit summary field to explain your reasoning for an edit, or provide a description of what the edit changes. Summaries save time for other editors and reduce the chances your edit will be misunderstood. For some edits a summary may be quite brief.

Please provide an edit summary for every edit you make. With a Wikipedia account you can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing → check Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. This is about this revert. By not using an edit summary, it might imply that you consider the IP edit vandalism. But as you can see, they have left an edit summary and acted in good faith. If you think that their edit is nevertheless unsubstantiated, you need to explain it in your edit summary. Thank you. Austronesier (talk) 08:46, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

I came to tell you about your signature, but stayed because I looked on your user page and saw that you've adopted a user. It's very kind of you to take up this responsibility, but unfortunately I may have some reservations about you doing so. Please let me know your thoughts. —VersaceSpace 🌃 11:19, 14 September 2022 (UTC)

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hello, Helloheart. Thank you for creating List of s-block elements. User:ComplexRational, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

I converted this page into a redirect because the subject is already covered at the target article. Having multiple articles dealing with the same subject is generally not advisable (see also Wikipedia's guideline on content forks); in this case, a "list of s-block elements" article would not encompass a different or broader scope than the target. You're more than welcome to expand the target article, though in the future, you may wish to be sure the topic you're writing about doesn't already have an article.

To reply, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|ComplexRational}}. Please remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. (Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.)

Playing footie

I understand (or think I understand) the main point you're trying to make at what's currently the foot of this discussion, but I'm confused by your olive hued example. Perhaps: Publication 1,[reference 1] Publication 2,[reference 2] and Publication 3[reference 3] say that, when compared with ???, Kuru shoes reduce pain caused by foot health conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, and heel spurs. However, as long as the ??? isn't specified, this is meaningless. And I'd rather not guess what it might be. Anyway, you may wish to tweak your example a little. -- Hoary (talk) 04:22, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

DYK reviews

Hi, following my questions at Oise amber, I had a look at your QPQ review for Cathedral of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, Suzhou. I am a relative novice at DYK reviews so I thought I would share some advice. I would suggest starting off with fairly straightforward nominations, ideally fairly short without images and without references in foreign languages (unless you understand them). If you start a review and it gets difficult, I would suggest leaving a comment rather than a review. Alternatively, you can ask for help at Wikipedia talk:Did you know as I have just done. WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! WikiCup 2023 May newsletter

The second round of the 2023 WikiCup has now finished. Contestants needed to have scored 60 points to advance into round 3. Our top five scorers in round 2 all included a featured article among their submissions and each scored over 500 points. They were:

Other notable performances were put in by Sammi Brie, Thebiguglyalien, MyCatIsAChonk, Chicago PCN02WPS, and London AirshipJungleman29.

So far contestants have achieved thirteen featured articles between them, one being a joint effort, and forty-nine good articles. The judges are pleased with the thorough reviews that are being performed, and have hardly had to reject any. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Request for Adoption

Hi! I've been recommended to look into adoption. I'm relatively new, having mostly focused on minor copyediting for the month I've been here, though I'd like to move towards improving article quality more broadly. I figured that, as you have a background in grading article quality, you may be able to help me develop these skills. I will be fairly busy until 25th (of May), but after this I should have a fair bit of free time to commit to the adoption process. Let me know if you think adoption is right for me & if you think you'd be the right adoptee!

Kind regards, Designated Management (talk) 11:52, 10 May 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – June 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, editors indefinitely site-banned by community consensus will now have all rights, including sysop, removed.
  • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

Question from Mary Neigel (16:28, 24 June 2023)

Hello! I didn't really want to edit, just ask a question regarding the 1940 (US) film 'The Letter'. Why is Cecil Kellaway listed as part of the cast when he's never seen on screen? Was his performance edited out and landed on the cutting room floor? I'm a fan of the guy - and Ms. Davis, of course! --Mary Neigel (talk) 16:28, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

@Mary Neigel, you said you didn't want to edit, but if you wanted, if you found a reliable source showing that Cecil Kellaway isn't really part of the cast, you could remove him and cite the source if needed, or include it in an edit summary. Or, if you don't want to edit, you could ask at Wikipedia:Wikiproject Film and see if anyone knows anything about the movie. I've never seen it, so I wouldn't be able to really make a judgement here, but happy editing! ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 00:03, 27 June 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

Question from Heyitseliza (12:40, 10 October 2023)

Dear ‪Relativity‬, I have revised the article for Bettina Lange I made and hope it now meets the requirements (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Bettina_Lange). I am interested in making women in legal research more visible. Here is a similar accepted article by one of her male colleagues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horst_Eidenm%C3%BCller. I would appreciate any help you can give me. --Heyitseliza (talk) 12:40, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

@Heyitseliza:, the first problem I see with your draft is that the citations are done a bit incorrectly. your first citation, for example, says "https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/author/bettina-lange/; https://www.wolfson.ox.ac.uk/person/bettina-lange; https://www.law.ox.ac.uk/people/bettina-lange". This should actually be made into three separate citations, one per link. I'm also taking a look at the notability criteria for people in academics, where if any one of these is true, then she warrants her own article:
The person's research has had a significant impact in their scholarly discipline, broadly construed, as demonstrated by independent reliable sources.
  • I would say, not really.
The person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level.
  • She's won awards, but none of them are really prestigious.
The person has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g., a National Academy of Sciences or the Royal Society) or a fellow of a major scholarly society which reserves fellow status as a highly selective honor (e.g., Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers or Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics).
  • No...
The person's academic work has made a significant impact in the area of higher education, affecting a substantial number of academic institutions.
  • Not really. That collaboration that you mentioned is something to consider, but it didn't make a really significant impact on higher education.
The person has held a named chair appointment or distinguished professor appointment at a major institution of higher education and research, or an equivalent position in countries where named chairs are uncommon.
  • She doesn't seem to hold any other higher position other than being a professor.
The person has held a highest-level elected or appointed administrative post at a major academic institution or major academic society.
  • She doesn't seem to hold any other higher position other than being a professor.
The person has had a substantial impact outside academia in their academic capacity.
  • Not really.
The person has been the head or chief editor of a major, well-established academic journal in their subject area.
  • No...
Overall, I would say that maybe Dr. Lange is probably not notable enough for her own article, although I was just going off of what you wrote in the article, and there could be other reliable sources that show otherwise. Writing an article is the trickiest thing to do on Wikipedia, so you should start small and make edits to already preexisting articles first.
Also, after you learn a little about editing you might be interested in WP:WikiProject Women and/or WP:WikiProject Women scientists

The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:54, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from 2077PP (00:13, 20 December 2023)

Hello! I actually would like to creat a Wikipedia page for my work. Not sure what do to next… --2077PP (talk) 00:13, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

@2077PP: Please read Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide. Creating an article about yourself or a company you work for would mean that you have a conflict of interest, and therefore is strongly discouraged. If you have any further questions about using or editing Wikipedia, you can ping me here. Cheers ~ ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 03:32, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
thank you for your reply. The thing is my name is mentioned in several articles on wikipedia (but not clickable) so in that sense it would be logically for it to be listed as a page. It would also be more about past projects and not to support any current company, therefore would not be any form of advertising. it would just complete all these existing articles that partly use incorrect countries mentioned etc. etc. 2077PP (talk) 04:20, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
@2077PP: If you are truly notable, then someone who is not you will likely create your article someday. An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing, and there are big problems when editors who have a conflict of interest create an article about the things that they have a conflict of interest in. I would strongly recommend reading everything I linked in blue here. Let me know if you have any further questions. Cheers ~ ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 04:29, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
I understand, thank you for taking the time replying! 2077PP (talk) 04:31, 20 December 2023 (UTC)
@2077PP: Thank you for taking the time to ask the questions. Many editors will just rush in and create articles for things they have a conflict of interest in and end up messing up in that regard. :) ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 04:33, 20 December 2023 (UTC)

@2077PP: Which projects? I'm not seeing any new pages or anything that mentions your projects in your contributions. I will add, though, another point which I brought up earlier in which I said that if your project is truly notable, sometime or later someone will create a Wikipedia article on it. ‍ ‍ Relativity ‍ 21:21, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mashedpotatoesinmyhair (01:09, 30 December 2023)

Hello;

I've been trying to improve the article on Lini Evans; i am at an impasse on Ms. Evans Language abilities. For me, the claim to be able to sing in more languages then she speaks comes across as more promotional than informational.

I've been looking for more sources for these claims and came across 2 that stuck out to me, the article from the Vancouver Sun (Tuesday April 20, 1999) Multiligual Evans to Sing for Zhu " ( from linievans.com/reviews) It describes how she learns songs by listening to them over and over until she gets the words and inflections right then on her linkedin she talks about how she learned a few phrases and 3 songs in Vietnamese for a client.

Where i am having an issue is, for example, I can sing 99 Luftballons but i wouldn't say i was able to sing German, just that i can sing a German song.

At what point do you go from learning/ memorizing a song in another language to being able to sing in another language? Is there a better way to indicate that she learned songs by memorizing in the languages rather then just say she can sing in those languages? --Mashedpotatoesinmyhair (talk) 01:09, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

I did explain it

It is uncited. OR. It cannot be restored without RS refs. Per wp:burden. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46&diff=cur 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 00:53, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

In addition, not only was your note to me untrue. So was your edit summary here. I added nothing. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Irrigation_in_Iran&diff=prev&oldid=1194248373 --2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 00:55, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Kindly self-revert or supply RS refs, so as to no longer be in non-compliance with wp:burden. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 00:56, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, the content was uncited, and some of your contributions are constructive, when you removed information with an old "citation needed" tag, but in this case WP:BURDEN applies to you too since BURDEN states that "If you think the material is verifiable, you are encouraged to provide an inline citation yourself before considering whether to remove or tag it." You added more uncited material, so I reverted it. I will not revert any of your changes further so another uninvolved editor can take a look at them, but please bear this in mind. Happy editing ‍ Relativity 00:58, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
No - I don't think it is verifiable. And I did not - as I said above - add more uncited material. You are wrong. Again. Kindly self-revert. Because you are now in direct conflict with wp:burden. Which states -- as you know, "The burden to demonstrate verifiability lies with the editor who adds or restores material, and it is satisfied by providing an inline citation to a reliable source that directly supports[b] the contribution.[c]".2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 01:08, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
But at least the content is there, and it's not violating BLP. Since you've also added uncited content, you also have to add citations to your content. ‍ Relativity 01:12, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
1. BLP is not a reason for you to restore uncited material, without complying with wp:burden. It has nothing to do with this conversation. 2. How many times do I have to say I did not add uncited content - only to have you ignore that. You are mistaken. I can't understand - as a good faith editor - why you keep on insisting on a blanket falsehood. That did not happen. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 01:15, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay, I was mentioning BLP because if the content was uncited then yes you should have— sigh, just forget I mentioned BLP. But why then do I not see a citation with the content you're adding? Am I missing anything? [1] ‍ Relativity 01:18, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Apparently you are not missing something, but imagining something that is not the case. What content do you imagine I added? 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 01:19, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
How about On the island orchards of date palm are found on tidal irrigation in the desert climate, although many date palms were destroyed during the Iran–Iraq War., which you added? I didn't see a citation attached to that. ‍ Relativity 01:20, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
  • That's in the original. Look at the left column of the diff. All that was done was a single-sentence para was not left dangling as such. Nothing was added. If you look at the diff, it is obvious. And so minor it by itself would not even call for an edit summary. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 01:26, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, I did miss that, but then why did you keep it if you're removing uncited content? Look, I'm going to go to WP:ANI, but only because I really don't know what to do here. ‍ Relativity 01:29, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
    1. Because I did not remove content that I thought may be verifiable. 2. ANI is not a help desk if you do not understand the clearly written wp:burden, and how you are not abiding by it. ANI is - as also clearly stated - for urgent incidents and chronic, unmanageable behavioral problems. Why would you go there? 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D5AE:2D16:B03B:9C46 (talk) 01:56, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Well, the other content that you removed could have been verifiable as well. ‍ Relativity 01:58, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Spacetechchik (21:39, 8 January 2024)

Hello, mentor. I sent a question a number of weeks ago and have not had a response that I can see. I've created an article on the International Space Elevator Consortium -- this is an organization and not the space elevator page. And wondering the process for getting it viewable by anyone on Wikipedia. Thanks, Kathe Jackson --Spacetechchik (talk) 21:39, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

@Spacetechchik: Sorry for the wait! First, make sure that the organization is truly notable, and if you're connected to the subject in any way and have a WP:COI, I would strongly discourage creating the article yourself. If you don't have a conflict of interest and you think that the organization is notable, you should follow the steps written out at WP:AFC. Happy editing and let me know if you have any questions ‍ Relativity 01:18, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
I do not have any conflict of interest. In fact, I am a retired communications professional who is interested in this topic and did the research into the organization, which is respected, has had international affiliations and conferences, and is very much in agreement that a wiki page be created for their group and not just lumped into the "space elevator" category. I've already created the draft page following the directions, did my 10 edits (and more), and submitted. My question is about the process that follows. I've heard nothing back, except possibly it can take 6 months. Does it take that long? How will I know if it is accepted or requires additional editing? Here is a link to the pdf in the sandbox: file:///C:/Users/krjac/Downloads/User_2603_9001_2002_2BB2_0_0_0_1006_sandbox_International_Space_Elevator_Consortium%20(1).pdf. Thanks again! Spacetechchik (talk) 21:12, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
@Spacetechchik: As a reviewer at AfC, I know that it shouldn't take 6 months right now, but expect it take at least a few weeks. Just be patient. ‍ Relativity 02:43, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from EnterTheInfoSaviour (16:24, 14 January 2024)

Hey! How do I change the tone of an in-universe page, or write a page from and out-of-universe perspective? Also, how do I cite sources for food items? Are recipes allowed? Thanks for the information. --EnterTheInfoSaviour (talk) 16:24, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

@EnterTheInfoSaviour: I'm glad that you're interested in improving Wikipedia. I would read WP:TONE for your first question. For your second question, I would take a look at WP:CITE and as far as recipes are concerned, I would say probably not (with exceptions.) because let's say that you want to say that a cake includes flour and you cite a recipe. Well, there could be all kinds of recipes for cakes that don't use flour. I could see you citing a recipe if you were saying "Chef so-and-so writes in his recipe book that twelve eggs are needed for his cake." and cited the recipe book. Anyway, I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions ‍ Relativity 04:04, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
I didn't really understand the part about the second question. Could you elaborate?
Also, in the first question, I was asking about Wiki articles written on fictional characters, and how to write those.

How can I add a new article?\ --Waseem magsi110 (talk) 18:08, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

@Waseem magsi110 Here are the steps:
1. Figure out the subject you want to write an article on, and make sure it isn't in Bad Article Ideas.
2. Make sure your topic is truly notable, that you can write about it from a neutral point of view, and that you don't have a conflict of interest.
3. You may want to take a look at the WP:MOS (or, alternately, a simplified version of it)
4. Follow the instructions at WP:AfC
5. Wait until someone reviews the article. This could take up to a few months. They may accept it, which means that your article is now in the mainspace— hooray!— or they could decline it, meaning that you would have to make improvement before it's accepted.
Hope this helps ‍ Relativity 20:35, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Nolansfood (22:23, 31 January 2024)

I have a question regarding editing this map. It is only showing 16 out of the 46 coordinates, and when I open the "full interactive map" in the hyperlink it then says there are 62 coordinates. When you click on the map it shows 16 coordinates. The hyperlink then shows 62, which is confusing:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentucky_Bourbon_Trail#Trail_stops --Nolansfood (talk) 22:23, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

@Nolansfood, you are right. Perhaps the editors could not find the exact coordinates for everything they wanted to put on the map? Have you thought about discussing this on the article's talk page? ‍ Relativity 22:29, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
The coordinates are exact, I checked. The problem is the full list of 46 coordinates don't show up unless you click on the hyperlink "full interactive map". The next issue is that when you go there the numbering is off. It shows there are 62 coordinates.
Do you have any guide or editor you know that is good with this? Nolansfood (talk) 22:34, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
@Nolansfood The Wikipedians at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Miscellaneous will probably be more helpful in this topic than I can be due to my limited knowledge of maps on Wikipedia. You also might be interested in asking here at Wikivoyage, since they might be more experienced in working with digital maps than the editors at the Misc ref desk, although they aren't on Wikipedia, so there may be some technical limitations, I don't know. WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Question from Naterator8 (19:19, 12 February 2024)

Hello, :)

I am wondering how you guys like your sources. I know that you want a source for pretty much all articles or information written, but what about if I am a family member? For example, there is an article written about the Anderson Rd. in Calgary, Canada. I am a family member on the people who made the road and I see a lot of misinformation in the article. However, how can I make my edits get approved if the only sources I have are from my family? --Naterator8 (talk) 19:19, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

@Naterator8, you can't. There is one main reason why you can't, and another burden:
1. (The main reason) That's still considered original research. Wikipedia's information is required to be published by reliable, independent, published sources. Since the only place you can get your information from is from yourself or interviewing your family member, you can't add that on Wikipedia.
2. (A burden) You have a conflict of interest. This means that it's not wise for you to edit the article. If you have reliable sources to back up any claims you make, you can make an edit request on the article's talk page.
Let me know if you have any further questions, and for answers from a more general amount of people, you should go to the Teahouse. I'll send you a list of helpful links on your talk page. ‍ Relativity 01:19, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Nolansfood (23:49, 14 February 2024)

How long does a deletion request last? Does an admin get assigned or does an admin need to be contacted? I noticed a picture on the Wikimedia commons up for over 1 week and I think it is WP:ZEALOUS. Consensus is keep. Here is the link: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Authentication_certificate.png --Nolansfood (talk) 23:49, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

@Nolansfood Since it's on Commons, I can't really help you here. If it's like Wikipedia's deletion system, seven days, or sometimes less if an admin spots it and it's an overwhelming keep or delete. Looking at the discussion, if it's like Wikipedia's deletion system, I would guess you have to wait seven days. You should ask at the Commons help desk; they'll know way more about the deletion process than I will. ‍ Relativity 01:52, 15 February 2024 (UTC)

I've edited with IPs before, but understood all the WP:(insert something) language and I hope if you adopt me (or if you choose not to), I could learn a couple of things from you too! Thank you for considering and reading my application, please ask me more questions should you want/need to! Cheers to you! Joséthewikier (talk) 09:33, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

I honestly don't have much experience editing Taiwanese articles, but I can help you in some other places such as countering vandalism, learning a bit more about content creation such as improving (and maybe even creating) an article, and working in some internal project spaces. WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! @Joséthewikier The basics are described at Help:Translation and WP:Translation. Another thing that you may like to know about is that when you are at the extended-confirmed user access level (which means that you have to have been here for thirty days and made 500 edits) you gain access to the Wikipedia:Content translation tool which should aid you more in translating if that's something that you're more interested in. But you don't actually have to be extended-confirmed to translate articles; you just have to be to use that tool. @Tomlovesfar Thanks for the notification, and thank you for the compliment. According to [2], it's okay if my signature only links to my talk page. Plus, there's nothing in WP:SIGNATURE that says I have to link to both my user page and talk page. I would have linked to both except I ran out of character room in my preferences and I'm not interested in adding anything to Special:MyPage/common.css. Anyway this works fine and anyone looking to read my user page can do so by clicking on it once they get to my talk page. I like your idea for the style though! ‍ Relativity 23:00, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

A message from Spacetechchik

Good afternoon. It has been several months, and I have still not heard back on status from Wiki. My correspondence with you has been archived and is below for your reference. Is there anything I should know or do?

From you: Sorry for the wait!

From me: I do not have any conflict of interest.

From you: As a reviewer at AfC, I know that it shouldn't take 6 months right now, but expect it take at least a few weeks. Just be patient. ‍ Relativity 02:43, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Thanks again,

Kathe Jackson Spacetechchik (talk) 16:20, 12 March 2024 (UTC) Spacetechchik (talk) 16:22, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

@Spacetechchik: Thanks for checking in. I have gone ahead and moved your draft from User:2603:9001:2002:2BB2:0:0:0:1006/sandbox/International Space Elevator Consortium to Draft:International Space Elevator Consortium and submitted it so it is in the WP:AFC queue, and therefore should be reviewed in a reasonable amount of time. For your question on whether it will take six months or not, I would say probably not since the oldest draft that is in the queue right now is just over two months old, and usually the drafts that take six months are ones where it's hard to figure out if the subject meets the general notability guideline. If it is accepted or declined, you will receive a notification about it on your talk page, and if it is declined, you will receive reasoning on why it was declined.
Looking at your draft currently, there are a few problems. The first one is its language. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and therefore needs to be written in a neutral tone. In your draft, there are sentences like ISEC is a leading voice in the space elevator community and plays a key role in advancing the development of this revolutionary new transportation system and promote a revolutionary and efficient way for humans to access space using these technologies, to name a few. This type of language is not acceptable on a Wikipedia article. Please read WP:IMPARTIAL for guidance on this.
Your second problem is that there are many external links within the article. The only place where external links outside of Wikipedia should go is in an "External links" section. For your draft, the only external link (in my opinion) that should be in that section is the official website. In your draft, there are links to LinkedIn and too many to the company's website. Please read Wikipedia:External links for some guidance on what to do there.
Your fourth problem is that the topic is already covered at Space elevator#International Space Elevator Consortium (ISEC). While this is not a major problem, it may also mean that editors feel that the topic should not be covered any more. If that was the only problem however, I would tell you to go along and keep editing your draft.
Your last and most major problem is your lack of adequate sourcing. There is no citation for the "Origins" section of your history section, and for the "Activities" section. Your three citations are not going to be enough to make your topic qualify for WP:ORG. Why don't you take a look at Space elevator#International Space Elevator Consortium (ISEC)? There are some citations there that would help. Please read WP:N and WP:ORG.
It is not the end of the road for your draft if it is declined. If it is declined, you can still make edits to your draft and resubmit it. If it is rejected, then you can't resubmit your draft. If it's accepted, congratulations! But writing an article is one of the hardest things you can do on Wikipedia. My suggestion is to start small and gain experience on other parts of Wikipedia before you write an article. Some things you can do are outlined at WP:Task Center. One last link I would encourage you to read is WP:Your first article. It has many tips to help you out with writing your article.
Sorry for the not-so-detailed response last time. I'm not going to review your article since I think that there should be some fresh eyes on it, but I will make a comment that links to this discussion. I'll also link some helpful links on your talk page. Let me know if you have any further questions. ‍ Relativity 19:27, 12 March 2024 (UTC)

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Question from BowWowowwowwow on Harrison Nichols (19:37, 23 March 2024)

Ive made a mistake in the code because idk what I'm doing. Can you fix it --BowWowowwowwow (talk) 19:37, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

@BowWowowwowwow I saw your edits on Harrison Nichols. They do seem to be causing some issues with the infobox. I can fix it quickly by reverting your edits, or you can specify what you want to be added and I can do my best to make it look how you want it to. It's great that you want to help improve Wikipedia. One thing that you should do is, if you don't know Wikipedia:Wikimarkup (and I didn't before I started contributing to Wikipedia and just gradually learned), you probably should not start out doing more technical edits involving infoboxes and templates, and perhaps start on some of the easier things outlined in the task center. Using WP:VisualEditor is also a great tool. See Help:Getting Started. Let me know if you have any further questions ‍ Relativity 21:48, 23 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Silaz218 (03:16, 10 April 2024)

Hello, I'm new here. In theory can I create articles about anything in the real world if they haven't been made yet? --Silaz218 (talk) 03:16, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

@Silaz218, yes, but please read Wikipedia:Your first article. Wikipedia requires things to be covered by independent, reliable sources with significant coverage of the subject. Also, see WP:GNG. Plus, creating articles from scratch is a hard thing to do when you're starting out. (Some good recommendations for what you can do to improve Wikipedia are available at the task center.) Question from JohanTheMagician (06:04, 10 April 2024)

Hi! Wow, 500k edits? Crazy impressive! My name is Johan, I love Wikipedia, but realised there is way to little written about communication and advertisning, especially the history of it. Many of the most important agencies through history are not even mentioned, especially the ones from the early days. But I thought I'd start by adding some tiny information about some of the "founding fathers" like Ogilvy. Some questions if you have time: Do you have any tips on where to start? Is it considered most valuable to add footnotes from books or from Internet sources? --JohanTheMagician (talk) 06:04, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

@JohanTheMagician Hello! I'm pretty sure I don't have 500k edits... I thought I had almost 3k... wait... do I sleep-edit??? Anyway, about your question about books vs. internet sources, the answer is, it depends. What we're looking for are reliable sources, whether they are from a book or from an internet source. From my experience, books usually tend to be more reliable than internet sources, but not necessarily. There are some books that cite or are mirrors or forks of Wikipedia and therefore are not reliable. Similarly, there are internet sources that are not reliable. For example, a Reddit post would not be considered reliable. What you would need to do is find reliable sources (You should also read what I just linked there.) Anyway, happy editing! Let me know if you have any further questions. Relativity ⚡️ 23:43, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
Ha ha. Thanks @Relativity for a swift answer. I understand your point of books referring to each other. This will be super interesting. JohanTheMagician (talk) 05:12, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
When it comes to advertising, there's a special issue with so many of the "sources" being authored by the agencies themselves. For instance, Ogilvy, which played a significant role in Advertising history, is one example. On the Ogilvy wikipedia page the agency's own 50-year jubilee book is quoted as a "source" for their successes. Even though it is a published book from Random House this seems a little swampy. Well, well, I'm looking forward to this, and to learn more! JohanTheMagician (talk) 05:17, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi relativity

Hi! My name is Starsplitterfanfare, and I might have one (or two) questions to ask. Ok 1. How do you edit semi protected articles? because I tried to edit one and it said that there was an error. 2. Does my name violate the username policy, because my username is pretty lengthy, If it does, I will request to change it. thank you for listening, bye! Starsplitterfanfare~enwiki (talk) 17:04, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

@Starsplitterfanfare~enwiki: Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! For your first question, semi-protected articles can only be edited once a user has been on Wikipedia for four days and made ten edits— also being called confirmed. See Wikipedia:Rough guide to semi-protection. You have made more than ten edits, but you haven't been here for four days, which is the problem. For your second question, no, it does not. Having a long username is not preferable since it can be confusing to other editors (see WP:UNCONF), but your username is fine. Cheers, and let me know if you have any further questions Relativity ⚡️ 17:17, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
