Line Breaks

I see you took out all the single line breaks in Max Fremery. See User:Aymatth2#Line breaks. If you come across an article full of single line breaks in the future, please just leave it that way. There is a reason, and taking them out does not help anyone. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 16:14, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Interesting essay, and new to me. I suggest that you put it forward for inclusion in the MoS. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:19, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
The Manual of Style makes that point. WP:NOSTRIKE says "A single line break may follow a sentence, which may help some editors." I suspect it affects a significant number of editors, particularly older ones or those with common neurological disorders. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:34, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
I meant to have it adopted as the default style. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:41, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
  • Getting agreement on a basic change like that would be impossible. Anyway, most people leave the line breaks. Once every few months I find someone has gone through an article I started and taken them out for some reason. I usually just undo the change. Aymatth2 (talk) 16:50, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Member vs fellow

I noticed that you recently expanded the wikidata item https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21127584 for Sunčica Čanić, and that it now lists Čanić as a member of SIAM. That is not what I wrote about her in the English Wikipedia article, and although it seems likely that she is a member the article does not document that. What I wrote is that she is a fellow of SIAM. Member and fellow are not synonymous. Member is a status anyone may obtain by paying an annual subscription fee. Fellow is an honorary status given by the society to people (most likely members at the time of being so honored) who are deemed particularly worthy by the society. Is there some way to make this distinction correctly in Wikidata? —David Eppstein (talk) 07:40, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

I didn't expand it; I created it. "fellow" is, in such cases, a subset of "member", but you're welcome to propose a separate Wikidata "fellow of" property; or to create an item for "fellow of SIAM". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:47, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Persondata Depreciated

Can you explain what this means? It was deleted off a page I watch, just curious. -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 17:05, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Consensus has been reached that the template should no longer be used, and should be removed from articles. See this RfC. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 17:55, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Pigsonthewing -- I looked at that link before reaching out to you. I still don't really understand it -- will the information get transcluded from the Infobox into Wikidata then? Is there going to be a robot to pull this information and remove it from existing pages? I am not super happy with having to go to Wikidata to edit Authority Control, but am trying to embrace this as it's an obviously powerful and rewarding effort (Wikidata). VE

I thought you would enjoy this that VE created. Notice all the <nowiki> tags and it even defined named refs multiple times. Sigh..... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bgwhite (talkcontribs) 02:16, 23 October 2015‎

@Bgwhite: Shocking, Wasn't this claimed to be ready for use two years ago? It's such a disservice to new users that their work had be removed because of this. However, your comment on Cmeppping's talk page is rather bitey and - given that they've only ever made four edits - doesn't explain the issue clearly, nor help them to fix it. Hi Andy, I didn't realize you were also working on it. Please see if you can salvage something from here to help. Regards - NQ-Alt (talk) 12:19, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5

Newsletter • October 2015

Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

We did it!

In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.

Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.

Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.

The work continues!

There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation support WikiProjects?

The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

Until next time,

WP water supply and sanitation vs. WP water

Hi, I started to change some tags because I am of the opinion that those articles fit better to the WP water which deals with water supply rather than WP water supply and sanitation which mainly focusses on sector profiles for water and sanitation in various countries. I don't think buildings like water works or other water related constructions are as important for WP water supply and sanitation by country because those articles give more of an overview. Since you reverted some of my edits, what are your thoughts about the assignment to a certain WP? --Mll mitch (talk) 16:28, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

I agree with Mll mitch and suggest that we discuss this further here where I just wrote an explanation about this issue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Water_supply_and_sanitation_by_country#Closure_of_project_and_re-tagging_to_WikiProject_Water_.3F Thanks. Hi Andy. Just for info, the participant survey from the event you helped at is now online at wmuk:Oxford_Ada_Lovelace_editathon_2015#Evaluation. There are some very positive comments, including "Very helpful people running the training." Cheers, MartinPoulter (talk) 11:49, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

ORCID invalid records blog post

While http://scholarlyoa.com/2015/10/29/concerns-about-dirty-data-in-the-orcid-database/ is probably not your fault, or problem, is there any chance you can help remove those (hopefully invalid) records - e.g. escalate it to someone more appropriate? John Vandenberg (chat) 05:03, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

That post already has a comment posted in behalf of ORCID, who are aware of and dealing with the issue. In the meantime, such records do not interfere in any way with the use of valid records. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:53, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

Can you add references to a template?

Andy, I have been working on some cleanup lists eg Somerset and Bristol. I commented to User:Colinrosewell about Template:Rosewell family tree which adds a references needed/uncitedtag to articles it is included in. He attempted to add references to that template but says this broke the template and it has now been blanked. Is there a correct way to add references in a template?— Rod talk 08:52, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

@Rodw: It should be possible; having looked at the edits concerned, I'm not sure what User:Colinrosewell was trying to achieve. I suggest adding the refernces one at a time, and checking each is OK before moving to the next. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:41, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
