hey Peter, could I talk you into putting Larry Sanger on your watchlist for a little while? — Ched ~ (yes?) 20:12, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done This should be interesting. PeterSymonds (talk) 20:19, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
thanks. If it weren't an important BLP with ties to Wikipedia itself, I just wouldn't bother, but geesh - it's one of the ones we should get right! But, other than the calmtalk tag, I'm sitting this round out! I've never met anyone I couldn't talk to on some level before, but when I looked at history and block log, arbcom, and all - I guess I'm not the only one ;) — Ched ~ (yes?) 21:03, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's an interestingly controversial page, stemming from the great "founder co-founder" debate. I've never had much time for the debate, personally, but another admin's eye on a controversial BLP would be beneficial in any case. :) PeterSymonds (talk) 21:12, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Rvcx has clearly made four reverts which is a violation of 3RR.[1][2][3][4] QuackGuru (talk) 03:00, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm impressed, the work on the Sanger article is coming along very nicely. Seems I was worried over nothing. He's actually put some very hard work and good improvements into it. I was wrong, and I'll "Man Up" and admit it! — Ched ~ (yes?) 21:40, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Project Chanology[edit]

It takes me 2 minutes or more to save a page. 2 minutes to get a diff engine to respond. The bulk of my edits you reverted was cleaning out the empty spacings in template that bloated the large size of the article entirely and you blindly reverted all my edits without looking at them. Are you ready for IPv6? (talk) 22:08, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, not so. I very rarely get involved in these things, but I take NOR quite seriously, so when I see it, I revert it. It was hardly a blind revert. I'd ask you again to justify the additions on the talk page, rather than simply reverting. I'm not bothered about the whitespace, just the sourcing you introduce. Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 22:12, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You looked at the wrong revision I made. I changed back to Cirt's version right after what I was doing. I then made some template cleanups. You never looked, you just used your script to revert. Are you ready for IPv6? (talk) 22:13, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted my picture.[edit]

Why did you do this? (Isagrand (talk) 15:37, 3 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Book covers are usually the intellectual property of the artist or the publisher. Therefore it is a copyright violation, as it was released under a {{GFDL}} license with no evidence that you own the copyright. If it meets the non-free content criteria, you can upload under fair-use with {{Non-free book cover}}, but you will have to justify the image's place in the article. If you are the cover designer or the publisher, you will need to verify this through OTRS. This is an email system to privately send proof that you are the copyright owner, and after an OTRS volunteer has verified this, the image will be tagged as such. re: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Markbeirut/Archive[edit]

From Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Markbeirut/Archive, what about the fact that these contributions altered edits of other users in the AfD? Is there something else I should have done? The actions of the editor clearly seem to be against policies in some way. *breath* I know it's not a big deal, but I would like to know what the best course of action, given the circumstances, would be. Belasted (talk) 00:25, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In this particular case, a sockpuppet investigation wasn't needed. The IP and the account were clearly the same person. However, I see no evidence that that they logged in with the intent to be deceptive. Changing comments is not appropriate, but a revert and a note to the user should solve this. S/he appears to be a genuine good-faith editor, so it should work. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 00:42, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I guess I should be a little bit less anxious to make editors into villains. Thank you. Belasted (talk) 01:12, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Peter, belated post holiday thanks for your support in my RFA, which passed by an embarrassingly wide margin. There's also a full glitzy Oscar style version of my acceptance speech here. By some small coincidence I'm in London on Sunday, so I'll see what I can do. I have a lot to do up there, however, so I can't promise anything. Sockpuppetry[edit]

Dear Peter,
I just realized I have been acused of sockpuppetry, for creating users Askatu, Elorza and UrkoB. This fact has been used against me in a deletion discussion that has slowly turned into (in my opinion) a personal attack and persecution for supporting Arnaiz-Villena's theories (actually, I'm not supporting his theories, but proved facts that have nothing to do with him).

  • I SWEAR TO GOD I haven't created those users.
  • I do not have the slightest idea of who might have created them, or for what purpose.
  • I would love to know how in the world it has been decided that they are my sockpuppets.

I am fairly new to Wikipedia, and I'm not familiarized with some techniques used. I would greatly appreciate if you could:

  • Delete the three mentioned users
  • Explain how sockpuppetry is detected. I'm quite curious about that point. If it is about IPs, let me just point out that I work in a huge institution, so it could have been any one (even though, I have the feeling it wasn't done from here).

Thank you, Peter. Regards. --Iberomesornix (talk) 16:39, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In order for me to help you, could you point me in the direction of the page that labels you a sockpuppet, please? Thanks, PeterSymonds (talk) 16:42, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It started as a rumor and it went up to the Arbitration Commitee (2.1.1.5) --Ibx (talk) 19:14, 9 March 2009 (UTC) [reply]

Sockpuppetry[edit]

Thanks for unblocking my talk page. I too have been accused of Sockpuppetry, and I can’t retire unless my name is cleared from something I did not do. I have one question: is there a way to check the IP an account logs in from? - Rockyobody (talk) 18:08, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there is. A small group of trusted users called checkusers have the ability to check the underlying IP address(es) that an account uses. However, please be aware that, according to the checkuser policy, it cannot be used to prove one's own innocence. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 18:31, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

M10 Tank Destroyer[edit]

Hello, I am just curious why you renamed the M10 Tank Destroyer article to M10 Wolverine? The page was renamed M10 tank destroyer Aug 22 08 after what I consider a good discussion. There was no opposition; there was no strong citation for the wolverine name. I can't see where any discussion of putting the old, inaccurate name back might have taken place. I can't think of any reason why the article shouldn't be called "M10 Tank Destroyer" but I welcome your thoughts. Regards, DMorpheus (talk) 19:17, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I requested hte move at WP:RM. WIll discuss on talk page.--Pattont/c 19:28, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Odd that the change would happen against the consensus of the talk page. DMorpheus (talk) 19:41, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I request that this page be re-renamed back to "M10 Tank Destroyer" which is better supported and has broader consensus. The recent re-name was done impropoerly IMO. Regards, DMorpheus (talk) 01:25, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Charm School 3[edit]

I don't understand, Why are you deleting my page? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Charm School 3 (talkcontribs) 21:41, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That particular page was deleted via AfD, and therefore that page meets the criterion for speedy deletion which deals with recreation of deleted content. Therefore I deleted it. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 22:37, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another one just popped up: Charm School (Season 3). I tried to prod it with speedy but prod was removed. Thanks! Plastikspork (talk) 00:32, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query On March 7, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the articles Henry Fielding's early plays, Actor Rebellion of 1733, Love in Several Masques, The Temple Beau, The Author's Farce, Tom Thumb (play), Rape upon Rape, The Tragedy of Tragedies, The Letter Writers, The Welsh Opera, The Grub Street Opera, The Lottery (play), The Modern Husband, The Old Debauchees, The Covent Garden Tragedy, and The Mock Doctor, which you created or substantially expanded. Could I get your opinion?[edit]

Hello. We've never spoken before, but I've seen you in IRC and I noticed you listed your name on WP:Editor assistance. I was wondering if you could take a look at Talk:United Football League (2009)#STOP. Was I correct in saying that the link shouldn't be added? I've noticed that User:Standleylake40 has engaged in an edit war over this link with a couple of anons, as well as reverting me and more recently another user. I'm not sure where to go with this as I've never really come into contact with a similar situation (thus seeking "editor assistance").

I'm not too invested in the article (emotionally or contribution-wise), I stumbled across it one day and have just been watching it progress, mostly because I live near Sacramento and there's a team going to play there in this league. Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Killiondude (talk) 04:50, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A wider rangeblock for EmilEikS?[edit]

Hello Peter. Now that I've seen Wikipedia:An#Requesting wider block for block evading sock puppet and Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/EmilEikS/Archive it seems that there is more abuse than I though. The recent IP socks at Talk:Mae West/Archive2 came from a range just above the one you blocked. (For example, from 217.209.96.211). What would you think about undoing the block of 217.209.96.0/25 and replacing it with a block of 217.209.96.0/24? EdJohnston (talk) 15:20, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good to me. Let's try it. :) PeterSymonds (talk) 16:09, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, the block on the /24 was done by myself last night; I forgot to unblock the /25. Avraham looked at the two ranges, and was still investigating the possibility of a block on the /16 range, but the /24 was safe at the time. PeterSymonds (talk) 16:13, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Captain Kirk[edit]

There is an edit war going on in the Captain Kirk page. I have made one change and EEMIV has re-edited it several times. Looking at the page, it appears that EEMIV, Arcayne, and Erikeltic have been arguing over the page all day. Erikeltic is now banned from making changes for 24 hours, but EEMIV and Arcayne are not. Please block them for 24 hours as well because they have actually edited the page more than Erikeltic did. FWIW, I agree with Erikeltic's edit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.152.150.16 (talk) 17:26, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Marcus Evans[edit]

Hello, Ivan Kinsman here. I see you have protected the main article page which is fine by me as another editor was including information that was not independently verifiable and neutral in tone. However, I moved this information to the DISCUSSION PAGE. Now correct me if I am wrong, but, as I understand it, this information can be included here and it is not Wiki policy to delete comments just because another editor does not like them. The discussion page is used to generate comments pertaining to the main article and this is exactly what this information is doing. Because it is on the discussion page, it does not need to be independently verified or neutral in tone. I have seen numerous articles where similar information has been included and IT HAS NOT BEEN DELETED. Appreciate your getting back to me on this... Archiving talk page[edit]

Well, I always archive manually, which involves copying the content I want archiving into a subpage (for example, User talk:PeterSymonds/Archive 12). For an automatic way, there's User:MiszaBot III, which automatically archives your page according to the parameters you set. I never really got this method personally, but the option's there. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 08:33, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your Protecting of Remo Mancini Article[edit]

Hello. I notice that you have protected the Remo Mancini article citing: '(Protected Remo Mancini: Excessive violations of the biographies of living persons policy: Per OTRS ticket #2009031310056877 and request by NonvocalScream ([edit=autoconfirmed] (expires 23:27, 20 March 2009 (UTC)) [move=autoconfirmed] (expir)'.

Please be advised that edits cited multiple, reliable and published articles in the Windsor Star (owned by media giant CanWest Global) which cited multiple sources. In the absence of ALL of the facts surrounding Remo Mancini and his background, this page would otherwise serve as little more than a platform of self-promotion with little or no public interest. Under the Wikipedia rules, you have 2 choices: 1) restore the article to include ALL known facts regarding the subject; or 2) remove the existing article as it is self-promotional, does not contain ALL known facts regarding the subject, and therefore is biased. Captainclegg[edit]

You recently unblocked User:Captainclegg after he was indef blocked as a result of an SPI case. I think some of his edits since being unblocked are inappropriate given the SPI case. In addition, there are also about 6 IP editors who aggressively support his position and have no other edits except on associated talk pages (see Talk:Hey Jude). I can't say whether or not the IPs are sock puppets, but it's very suspicious. I want to request that an admin look into both issues (post-block edits, IP editors), but I don't know the proper procedure. Does one request that someone re-open an SPI case? Can you tell me what I should do? If you have any other opinions about this matter, I am all ears... — John Cardinal (talk) 22:54, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Which edits in particular? I saw a few diffs to Talk:Hey Jude, but it appears to be six to one and half a dozen to the other. I will make one thing clear: He was unblocked per AGF to carry out a second chance. At the moment, this is an argument between Ward3001 and Captainclegg, but Clegg is under no restrictions, so he can edit the talk page if he wishes. If he causes disruption there, I'll step in. However, I don't think he is socking again, but I will re-open it if there is sufficient evidence that he is doing this. I'll also speak to Lucasbfr about the underlying IP; that might help clear this up. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 08:49, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Why did you delete the Ruby's Restaurants page?? It was up in December, but now it's gone and it says you deleted it? I wanted to look something up about it, but now it's gone! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.105.19.209 (talk) 04:17, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually it was deleted as an expired proposed deletion by Jclemens (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) (see here). I merely deleted the broken redirect from Ruby's to Ruby's Diner. If you want the content, please log in and specify an email address so I can send it to you. 68.3.119.178 / LisaKachold Sockpuppetry Investigation Once Again[edit]

It appears that Wikipedia has blocked access from the IP address that 3 people beginning and editing the Lisa_Kachold page originate from as WP:SOCK citing investigation. This was the same thing that happened during the Obnosis nomination for deletion, so I wonder if perhaps this might be someone hitting Wikipedia with spoofed traffic? All Wikipedia edits are situations where multiple people can access from the same systems (gateway), from the 60MHZ 802.11/g beacon, and use X11 via sit/VPN tunnels, to show an origination from the same IP gateway.

During the IP blocking, LisaKachold quickly fat fingered the login to Lisakachold and when prompted to enter a new username/login as if user was again deleted, she did so.

Can users submitting content to Wikipedia only be non-technically astute? If they are technical women, accessing/editing/submitting content via more than one human editor from the same IP, this must be sockpuppetry, (xterminal, Wifi home businesses, and complex technical systems group access are not considered possible for most accesses, especially those promoting women's issues)?

This IP ban was done while the original group was trying to fix the Lisa Kachold page, nominated for Deletion, as suggested by LinuxChix editors, within the time frame (premature since good faith editors generally suggest a reliable sources tag before nomination) of 5 days?

Please DELETE this Lisakachold User![edit]

LisaKachold is the correct editor!

Which IP was this? I unblocked all the accounts and IPs listed at the SPI case. I'm afraid accounts can't be deleted, but if you made a mistake with the name, simply abandon the account and start a new one, or request a rename from the bureaucrats. As to your first question, I'm afraid I'm not very technical, and I don't know what that means. You might want to ask at the computing reference desk instead. Golan-Globus/Cannon Group[edit]

Go to Golan-Globus. See in the article that it then says it is called The Cannon Group, Inc. Is this okay? I don't know what to do. Thanks. Belasted (talk) 01:36, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I find it truly odd that it's referred to by a different name throughout. Was that what you were referring to? Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 20:55, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. But is that okay? I've been here a while, but I've never seen that. I don't know what to do. HELP! Belasted (talk) 06:50, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've not seen it either, so I don't know what to do about it. I suppose you could file a requested move or ask on the talk page, but I'm afraid I have no idea. I assume it's accurate, given the edits, and not page-move vandalism as I first thought. Why it is not titled Cannon Group is beyond me, I'm afraid. Sorry. I actually have no idea, as I hardly ever use Huggle. Try the help desk. Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 20:55, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did you put enable:true in your huggle.css page? Versus22 talk 21:30, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would request a checkuser, but it doesn't really meet any of the criteria. I could use code "C", but the sockpuppetry didn't affect the outcome. Should I use code "F", or do you think that it would be better not to request checkuser? GT5162 (我的对话页) 20:55, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd give it a while, personally. Rlevse is a bureaucrat but also a checkuser, so would have seen the sockpuppet comments and probably would have acted accordingly. Not entirely sure though. Further, yes, code F is fine for sock drawers. :) Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 20:58, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have chosen to use code "C" because the sockpuppets may have affected a vote that happened last year. However, the SPCUClerkbot tells me that the code letter is missing. Please could you have a look at the page to see what needs to be changed as I thought that the code letter was "C". GT5162 (我的对话页) 21:12, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just seen that AfD — Wow. I'll look into relisting that too. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 21:13, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Rlevse didn't close the RfA; Tikiwont did. GT5162 (我的对话页) 21:20, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Rlevse removed it from the list though. ;) SPI case looks okay. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 21:24, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My edits[edit]

Perhaps what really killed me was what I commented to this user, which I admit now I shouldn't have. It looked to me that I thought the user was acting in good faith when he/she chose (what is now) a very inappropriate name. I was thinking that what I saw, they didn't know it was an inappropriate name. But I think I was fooled at the end. Ouch! :( Versus22 talk 21:18, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have had it[edit]

This is really annoying me. The Total Drama Action article is continually vandalized by ESTABLISHED users. I have reached the ultimatum, and have left a warning to editors on that page, that if they vandalize and insert false information, I will make sure they are blocked for Wikipedia. However, one user did not heed my warnings. This is User:Sshafiee1659. He has been a vandal for quite some time, has received multiple warnings from a bunch of users, and even vandalized User:Bbhinton15's page. Check out the history to see what he did. He should be banned for years, in my honest opinion. Thank you for listening to my rant, and also thank you again for making me a rollback. RE; koman90's rfa[edit]

Thank You For Your Message

I am sorry, but I have closed your Request for adminship prematurely. Simply put, you only have 1200 edits on Wikipedia; while your edit count isn't the only determining factor, and numerous people have their own personal standards by which they judge RfA candidates, this particular RfA was all but assured of not passing.

I am sorry about this, and I hope you don't take it personally. If you continue to contribute to the project in a positive fashion, I am confident that you would be able to submit a successful RfA in the future. You may wish to consider applying for an evaluation by other Wikipedia editors for feedback on how to obtain the necessary experience. Once you are ready to request adminship again, there is a great admin coaching program available, as well as a guide to requests for adminship.

If you have any other questions about becoming an administrator, please don't hesitate to ask me. Good luck! PeterSymonds (talk) 03:31, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

As A Network Administration Student, I Know that administration is a high stress job, i also know that security is a top priority among corporate networks, such as the wimkimedia foundation. Deeply and genuinely respect that. I appreciated polite tone in the message above and look forward to possibly re-applying for an RfA when I am Journeyman Editor. I would also appreciate if you have any IT related questions please do not hesitate to cont me on my talk page or contact wiki project computing. We are here not only to help wikipedians but admins as well. Thank You So Much For Your Time And Patience Re guarding My RFA--Koman90 (talk) 17:21, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Page Protection[edit]

Sockpuppet autoblock... Collateral damage or not???[edit]

User talk:CanineHybrid is requesting an unblock; he's been caught by an autoblock for a block you made. As this was part of a sockpuppet investigation, I thought it prudent to contact you to see if this user is the intended target, or an innocent bystander. Could you please handle this, or at the least, tell me whether or not I should unblock them or grant IPBE? Thx. --Jayron32.talk.contribs 00:49, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done Looks like an innocent bystander. The checkuser did not pick this up, so the user is most probably unrelated to the intended target. I'll drop a note on his/her talk page. Thanks for letting me know. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 00:59, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I misread the dates, and noticed the last edits were in March 2008 not 2009, so the checkuser on that account would've been stale. But nonetheless, it looks okay. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 01:04, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK help[edit]

Hello! I am not sure how to list it, but what about with this? As you can see I expanded the article considerably? Could we ask, "Did you know that Will Kane's was Gary Cooper's second Academy Award winning role?" or "Did you know that Will Kane is ranked fourteenth on Entertainment Weeklys list of Top 20 Heroes of all time?" Thanks! Sincerely, --A NobodyMy talk 04:36, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean "that Will Kane was Gary Cooper's second..."? It's a nice expansion, just over the 5-fold requirement. I'd recommend adding wikilinks to some of the significant parts of the hook, and bold the article itself (so for example, Did you know ... that Will Kane was Gary Cooper's..." Hope that helps. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 09:41, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
