Allenton Hippo

Using your ref numbers "...3706" looks good and the first ones on the CD you gave me. ..3651-3655 show good head views and the first five on my CD (they have names rather than ref numbers and show the sculpture in Allenton, the head again and the whole thing again. The article is here if you'd like to see or edit it. You may have noticed that Ive added several score of pictures from the museum to Flickr. Hippo images now uploaded to Wikimedia, and I've attempted to add categories to them all. I've added these to your draft Hippo page, and also added some geological notes, too. I could add another image of the laser-scanning process with the hippo tooth displayed on a computer screen, but I couldn't convince myself this was really necessary.

So I see someone has made an edit via my watch list and if I'm intrigued ... and I was , then I read it. I have nt seen any errors yet. If you add pictures to commons then someone can always add them later- but I agree we have enough pics for the size of article we have.

Request for article

As part of the Cultural Partnerships initiative, Wikimedia is hoping to produce a series of case studies that can be combined in book where various professional cultural organisation who have worked with Wikipedia will tell their own story, in their own words, about why they chose to do this and what advantages/problems this has resulted in (in your case using QR codes in galleries). We find that people telling their own story is much more powerful than if Wikipedians were to tell the story for them. This is based on Creative Commons' equivalent case studies book. Each case study will available as a standalone physical and digital page, as well as combined into a hardcopy collection. Specifically what I would like is for a one or two page piece of prose text, a couple of pull-quotes, and a couple of associated photographs, that can be laid out into an attractive webpage and accompanying printed book. The prose could briefly describe:

1. The reasons that your organisation decided to collaborate with Wikimedia
2. What risks/fears you had, how they were addressed/solved.
3. What the outcomes have been, both intended and unexpected.
4. An example of something extra special that you would like to draw attention to.
5. Some statistics.
6. What you think the organisation will do in the future.

Thanks Roger. A lifetime's work finished, at last! I make no money out of the sale of copies the Flora, but I would not want to be seen to be merely promoting one book. I do think there is significance in The Flora of Derbyshire as a concept of four books, covering 120 years, allowing articles on people like Linton, Painter, Clapham etc to be linked together. We've done some interesting comparisons between the species recorded in each publication, so I'm guessing that, as author, I don't for once have to worry about cutting and pasting as its my own words - just so long as it is fully referenced. I hope you hadn't interpreted my reply to suggest I was going to write a Wiki biography page about myself or my co-author! I meant to suggest that a page about one book (ours) would not be appropriate for Wikipedia, whereas one page that explained the series of four significant county floras all of the same name, and each standing on the shoulders of those authors who went before would have merit. That said, I didn't know of Mary Kirby, though I probably should have done, having had a small hand in the production of the 1988 Flora of Leicestershire, where I researched the life of A R Horwood who wrote the previous 1930s Flora. I didn't go any further back than that unfortunately. She sounds very impressive - interesting fact about the only female 19th century flora -writer. I couldn't believe it at first, but thinking about it, it could well be right. Parkywiki (talk) 18:52, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

Nick .... I wouldnt think you would suggest that! I did look for "Flora of..X" on the Wiki and most of the articles are about the Flora of ..countries. I couldnt find any counties and only a few states. I just sent you the Leicestershire one because Id enjoyed writing it and I thought they were a change from stereotype bloke model. These women were notable in the 19C (but they wrote and painted some very nice works). 23:36, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

BTW: I've been doing a lot of work on the Derbyshire page today - drafting a geology/ecology section on my own User Page whilst I sort out the references. Hi Parkywiki: Quick question on the video you just posted to bird nest: did you take the video yourself, or is it from one of the live cam feeds posted by the Derby Cathedral Peregrine Project? Hi MeegsC. Good question. The answer is yes to both questions. Yes, I did create the video entirely myself as I personally installed the camera, the nest ledge, and downloaded and edited the video directly to my computer, and put the CC licence on our webcam page (as I set up the Project). However I probably think I ought to ensure the Project is given the acknowledgement, not me, certainly in future as I plan to upload a suite of intimate peregrine life cycle videos - so I will tweak the credits. But it is OK as it stands and doesn't need to be removed for breach of any conditions. (I was more excited to have finally converted to one of my many .mkv videos into webm format than to think about the best way of credit them!). I thank you for raising this - (I would like to delete this discussion from my userpage in due course, just to slightly distance my involvement as a Wikipedian from my work in this field, although it is mentioned on my WP:COI statement) Regards Parkywiki (talk) 07:57, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Rubus durescens - possible photo

On the Talk Page you mentioned it was your intention to try and photograph this plant growing in situ. I am so glad you mentioned that and I would be very greatful if you could try when the season is right. I believe it would add good context to the article. I've negelected the area of my editing relatined to adding images but if you are like me and a little uncertain as to how to add an image in the correct spot, please simply uplaod anything useful to Wikipedia Commons, make sure the species name is in the description and then notify me on my talk page and I'll see what I can do. I really need to sharpen up those skills since I have hundreds of photos of that could be of use. it was simply not a priority when I was first reading and familiarizing myself with all the policy stuff. Hi LiPollis Thanks for the prompt about the photo, and offer of support - much appreciated. Although I am quite comfortable with adding images either of my own, or from Wikimedia Commons, I've not yet had experience of uploading an image taken by another person, then getting their signed permission to put it into Commons and sending that off to be authorised. The image is sitting here on my computer - I've just got to 'bite the bullet' of grappling with the process at WP:CONSENT. As I've worked with the photographer in publishing a book on our local Flora, I'm confident he'd be happy to make it available . . .it's more working out the best phrasing to explain why Wikipedia is so fussy and needs him to jump through those hoops. I thought it best not to upload an image too soon which couldn't then be used, or gets deleted by one of the over-eager beavers we have here on WP. But I appreciate your interest. It might also be worth me trying to clarify licencing for this specimen which would be great to use on the page, too. It's not a plant that people will be dashing out to identify (I've been recording plants here for over 20 years and have would be confident at identifying it from all the other Rubi, but it is certainly a very relevant and important picture to include within the article. In 2012 an AfD for {{Infobox Australian Hut}} closed with the rather strange outcome "merge or replace with {{Infobox mountain hut}} where feasible". Since it wasn't at all feasible to use Infobox mountain hut for any Australian huts I wrote {{Infobox hut}}. At the time, many of the European hut articles used German language infoboxes and it was necessary to convert these to use {{Infobox mountain hut}},[1][2][3][4][5][6] and then convert them all to use Infobox hut. I noticed that many of these were unreferenced, and very few demonstrated notability. It's important to remember that verifiability is a core principle of Wikipedia. It's not sufficient to say that something is notable, it's necessary to demonstrate that it is notable. This has been Bermicourt's problem from virtually day 1. He does not like "his" articles to be questioned. As I've explained at the AfD, I tried tagging articles with {{notability}} to alert editors more familiar with the subject that notability needed to be established, but Bermicourt removed the tags without improving the articles. He seems content with converting the German prose to English but does not see the need to improve the articles to the standard required by the English Wikipedia.

The wording on the notability tag is clear: The topic of this article may not meet Wikipedia's general notability guideline Please help to establish notability by adding reliable, secondary sources about the topic. If notability cannot be established, the article is likely to be merged, redirected, or deleted. Despite this, no attempts to improve most of the articles were ever made. If Bermicourt had bothered reading the notability tags, instead of deleting them, he would have known what he needed to do to improve the articles since it was explained in the template text. After conversion of the articles, I didn't hear from Bermicourt again until July 2013, end even then it was only after I nominated {{Infobox Schutzhütte}} for deletion as it had been unused for the 14 months since Infobox hut was created. During the TfD that Bermicourt chose to post on my talk page again and he used the TfD to take a stab at me for adding the notability tags to the articles.[7] As I said, Bermicourt seems happy to create articles but not to get them up to a required standard, but then he blames others who make good faith edits to improve the encyclopaedia. He did that in 2013 and then he has done so now. As you can see at the AfD he has recently removed a number of notability tags, despite not having made any attempt to improve the articles. His reason for not improving the articles is because I added notability tags, which is obviously rubbish, since the addition of those tags is encouragement to improve the articles. Regarding {{Infobox Schutzhütte}}, he opposed its deletion implying that he had hundreds of articles to move from the German Wikipedia. However, in the 2 /12 years since the TfD he has used the template precisely 5 times, for Kalmithaus, Nördlinger Hut, Rappensee Hut, Ravensburger Hut and Solsteinhaus. Nobody else has used this template.

Since you've obviously been able to find more sources than I have, perhaps you would consider improving the articles. Otherwise those that do not establish notability are likely to end up at AfD as well. --AussieLegend (✉) 17:15, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm afraid this is a rather one-sided tirade that is quite inaccurate in places. Having created numerous articles over several year, I'm quite familiar with notability standards and that we don't "own" articles. My assessment is that, compared with other editors, AussieLegend has overtagged these articles and then rejected reasonable sources. As a result, I decided not to waste time adding references or further articles, because I reckoned there was every chance that AussieLegend would make a move to delete them, based on his unwillingness to cooperate in friendly discussion to help improve them. I have been proven right.

A word on infoboxes. There is a well tried system for importing and converting German infoboxes to avoid manually translating every parameter every time. Essentially you convert the German infobox to point to the English infobox, so the parameters display in English. Then you get a bot to substitute the infobox fully. This is done for mountain infoboxes and works well. It saves hours of nugatory work. {{Infobox Schutzhütte}} is already a pivot table, but I haven't asked for the bot because, like I said, I judged I could be wasting a lot of time on articles that were on AussieLegend's radar to delete. I really don't want to get into an argument with you on someone elses talk page but some of your comments just don't make any sense to me. It's clear that you don't understand the notability requirements because you've removed the notability tags from completely unreferenced articles that in no way demonstrate notabilty. Then you had to ask me how to address the notability problem when the template explained how to do just that. Claiming not to add citations to a page because you thought the page might be nominated for deletion makes absolutely no sense, for more than one reason. A page with no citations is far more likely to be deleted than one that includes citations. A page that includes citations that establish notability is more than likely to survive AfD. Prior to this AfD, in the 3 1/2 years since I created Infobox hut, how many of these articles have I nominated for deletion? The answer is precisely zero, so your concern is not supported by history. Instead I added maintenance tags requesting more references which, if anything, is a clear indication that I would prefer the articles to stay. As for my "unwillingness to cooperate in friendly discussion", exactly what discussion haven't I participated in? I answered your question (there was just one) on my talk page and I opened a discussion on your talk page regarding notability. I really don't understand why you would need a bot to substitute the 5 articles that you've created using Infobox Schutzhütte. A bot automatically substituted the four articles that you didn't bother substing yourself.[8][9][10][11] You don't need a bot to subst the template at all. Instead of typing "{{Infobox Schutzhütte" you type "{{subst:Infobox Schutzhütte" and save your edit, as explained in the template documentation. That substs the infobox without a bot. Gentlemen (I'm assuming you both are gentlemen) - let's see if we can find some common ground, shall we? It's clear we all care about improving Wikipedia's content, but maybe we should agree that you each approach matters somewhat differently. Forgive me if I don't spend time delving into the 'whys and wherefores' of an obvious disagreement in your approach to editing, or of infoboxes - it took me long enough to consider the issues and present my views on this one simple hut, without spending a whole lot more on enhancing the actual article (which might have been quicker, as it turns out). I think I've shown that this is entirely possible, and I've left enough links in my comments for Bermicourt to do so, which I hope he will in due course. I think the same approach could be taken on virtually all the other high mountain refuge articles, so I would like to request that AussieLegend does not attempt to put forward further articles for deletion of this type, please. I can't promise that these huts in the outlying Alps will be addressed anytime soon, as I can see that Bermicourt is active in other important areas of the Mountains of the Alps TaskForce, and I'm trying to do my bit in some areas, too, albeit as a relative newcomer here. But hopefully one or two of the challenged articles can be worked on in the near future to demonstrate that it is entirely possible to use high quality mountaineering guidebooks as sufficient secondary sources, and they really shouldn't be challenged as being basic tourist brochures and therefore insufficient. Responding to AfD's is very time-consuming and it does divert efforts away from other important contributions. It has taken me well over a full day of my time to deal with this one, and I don't want to spend any more time on discussing it.

I think it's already been agreed some while back not to add any new stubs or translations on alpine refuges without first ensuring good references are included, even if the subject does have one or more foreign language equivalents. (So, there goes my plan for creating a new article on the Refuge du Requin/Requin Hut above the Mer de Glace! It'll have to wait for a bit longer even though I know its notability can be demonstrated.) I don't think it's helpful to suggest, or possibly even threaten, that AfD's will be placed on future articles of this type if they don't get changed, but perhaps neither is it helpful to remove what some see as a useful and visible flag to show where further work is needed. I certainly don't see them as delayed detonators with an AfD at the end of them if an article doesn't get improved after a certain period of time, and I hope AussieLegend doesn't either. It would be very disruptive and indeed unhelpful if that were the approach taken. I'm not going to suggest that it's inappropriate to challenge articles about an area on the other side of the globe, though I do not want to see disagreements in approach becoming disruptive, for whatever reason to the work of the four editors currently signed up to support the Alps TaskForce. So, I shalln't be working on improving these articles myself, as was suggested, but am leaving that to others to follow up in the fullness of time. If I've irritated you both by the above remarks, it's possibly a good thing, and hopefully we can get some balance back into what we're all trying to achieve without too much more disruption, please.Parkywiki (talk) 03:32, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

These sources are the publisher's website of the free html version of the aforementioned article, containing a link to a website providing the free pdf version for it as well and the website itself hosting the free pdf version of the article given above.

Furthermore, I would also like to suggest that in terms of consistency, the current given Format of reference #4:
"Spash, C. L. (2011) Terrible economics, ecosystems and banking. Environmental Values 20(2): 141-145."
corresponds to the formatting of reference #3:
"Spash, C.L. 2008. How much is that ecosystem in the window? The one with the bio-diverse trail. Environmental Values, vol. 17, no. 2, 259-284"
Thus the new formatting for reference #4 would result in:

Thank you Parkywiki for getting back to me on such short notice. What I forgot to mention is the fact that contrary to the URL, you modified in the criticism of TEEB section, referring to the pdf document listed as reference #3 in the references section of the main article about TEEB, the website hosting the free pdf version of the article regarding reference #4 of the main article about TEEB, unfortunately doesn't offer a static link, which could just be copied and pasted into the source text of the criticism of TEEB section, as you did with reference #3, but a dynamic link instead, which changes everytime you retreive the pdf document from the hosting website. I'm not quite sure how to handle this, since it's a little bit beyond my technical capacities. ;-)
Furthermore, I've had a look at the talk page and I saw that I've edited it. Thank you for adding the note to the talk page. :-) I was able to edit it before, but I wasn't sure whether or not it would be appropriate to do so since there were no prior edits requesting/discussing changes. Dear Parkywiki, You have now twice changed the spelling 'lisence' in a footnote to this article to the spelling 'licence'. Please note that the reason it has been spelled 'lisence' in this case is because the text you are changing is an exact quotation from an early 17th century marriage register in which this spelling is used. Other Abbreviations and latinizations of titles and names are also used in the same quotation, so it would be inconsistent to modernize this word only. The point of giving the quotation at all is to give the reader the opportunity to verify the original entry. I quite realize that the modern English spelling is 'licence', but the usage in this case is deliberate. For this reason I am about to revert your edit for a second time. Spelling

Thank you for your work correcting spelling errors. I note that you changed "targetted" to "targeted" on Melaleuca huttensis. I think you will find that the correct spelling is "targetted" in the U.K. and hence, probably Australia. (Melaleuca huttensis is an Australian plant.) Interestingly, the source I used for "A targetted flora survey was undertaken for...." has the spelling "targeted". A case of a Wikipedia page being more accurate than one of its sources, perhaps. Alas, no longer!

I also notice that earlier today you changed "transfered" to "transferred". A contradiction maybe? Or did you change it because "transfered" looks rong? Anyway, good luck. For me its the manenig taht metatrs, not the silenlpng - as lnog as we cmacmiounte.

Hi Gderrin. Thank you for raising the issue over spelling. I agree with you that getting the meaning across clearly is most important, and also that spellings do vary between nationz. I should say that I don't take a strong stance on one particular spelling of a word - if the North Americans want to abuse modify the English language, I let them get on with it. I could pretend that I checked with my ridiculously heavy copy of Chambers 20th Century dictionary (New Edition 1972) which, on page 1381, gives the spelling of 'targeted' with only one 't', or that I had read this advice on the rules to apply to determine which words require A doubling of the consonant, and which, like targeting, do not.

Though both are factually correct, the truth is I have recently started using a Wikipedia tool called Lupin Live Spellcheck to check en masse the spellings of articles which have been recently edited. The link will take you to a list of common errors in spelling that it uses to offer corrections. It's that list that I use as my starting point for correcting typos. I then work by eye to assess whether the highlighted word is within a url, an image name, a foreign word, is proper name or has been helpfully flagged as 'sic' or uses the template 'notatypo'. After that I quickly assess whether the spellchecker is still likely to be right in flagging it up within the context of the sentence or paragraph (I don't read the whole article whilst doing bulk spellchecks). Whilst I would never knowingly spell 'targeted' in the publications I write as 'targetted', others might. And you're right, it is not really that important, although many of the other howlers I see here most certainly are. Feel free to change it back to the 'wrong' version (LOL), but be aware that I and other users may well repeat the edit correction when they use the tool in future, simply because we can't remember the names of the thousands of articles we have edited, unless they stand out. Though yours will now, of course!.

Curiously, I am more concerned that the automatic checker failed to highlight 'ciruclar in shape' within your article!

I also have a question for you: would it have helped had the Summary of the edit told you that this made with a spellchecker? I ask because I am collating feedback on its use, and suspected that knowing how the edit was done might help article editors understand why the change was made. However, I note the tools creator is no longer active, so input might not be acted upon, though it remains a very useful tool.

Actually, I looked at your article twice - the first time because I thought the scientific name looked like that of a european cockchafer, so was curious to see what it was about. I then also saw it was pretty well-written (being a member of the Plants Project myself, and author of a county flora). The second time I looked was after you messaged me - so I did see the photos, too. (I'd have used 'fruit' not fruits' in the caption, but that's really minor). I was disappointed it was about a western Australian species as my only knowledge of ozbot is through my local English hero Joseph Whittaker who travelled to S Australia and ended up having a Drosera named after him. (I co-authored the article in S Austral Nat. about him - so I really am interested. It's just that Spellchecking focusses you on speed and efficiency. More spelling- thanks for catching my idiotic 'epsiode' at Howard Bishop - any other observations or suggestions that might help avoid his deletion would be welcome- not that I have any special axe to grind about him (other than to wish not to feel I have wasted my time!), but it looks to me like a reasonably helpful collection of all the Bishop data I could find, and I'm sure that there are many articles about less noteworthy folk. You're welcome - I arrived at your new page simply because I was using an automated spell-checking tool (Lupin) referred to above. I knew nothing of Howard Bishop, but stopped to read the delete discussion out of curiosity, and am minded to oppose it as I then went away and checked a few links and found the (awful) film that he was in, noting he was 11th in the pre-film credits - two below Vinnie Jones. I was very disappointed the delete notice was slapped on within about 10 minutes of you creating the page, which I have personally found highly demotivating, and quite rude for articles that have only just started and clearly weren't spurious or vandalistic in nature. I might suggest in future you create a draft article in your Sandbox first, where you can create structure and add references and look to see if it fits with general style and notability before adding to Mainspace. Have you found the links to show that he is from Hawaii, also has a job in at Mercedes Benz in Honolulu, and was nude in The Full Monty? If not I'll post them on the deletion discussion page. Don't be too put off by the discussion - keep going, digging for references, and create some structure to your article. In my view, however, there are too many articles on minor modern celebrities and fictional characters (such is the ability of modern media to allow third party sources to proliferate which over emphasise a person's notabilty) whereas historically important figures often don't have anything like the quantity of third party sources written about them. OK, Roger. I'm at work today, I'm afraid. I like the idea of spurring off from The Orrery. I've just checked and found your email, and read back thru the thread. It would certainly be helpful to know from Spencer et al what topics they think are under-covered on Wikipedia, and what resources they can provide to improve related content. I would particularly recommend that you ask for agreement to rephotograph the painting, putting a better colour-balanced, but not too high a res version on commons, to replace the current dim file would be good. We are often a bit touchy on image reprodiuction, so giving an assurance about good quality colour but low res image unsuitable for professional, commercial use would be good. It would be good to take close-ups of each element of the painting (e.g. Peter Perez Burdett, the philosopher etc being taken) - I do have a series of colour slides I took some years ago and could dig those out for a CC upload, but better to ask again and retake digitally. Also there's the signficant astronomical link of Wikipedia on the Moon and the significance of the orrery itself to consider. Jonaythan W. tells me that the mechanical orrery will be coming back on display in the future once they can find a restorer to service the clockwork mechanism.(I have some close-up video I took of the earth/moon/sun/mercury venus movements I must upload to Commons sometime.)

It might be good to ask my former colleagues if there they have other smaller, un-related topics they would like to see created or enhanced - just to give attendees something else to focus on should they wish. (The Museum page is still very non-represntative of the whole museum's public exhibition space. Photo opps? Anotherr idea I could suggest is linking artworks in Derby Museum that show Derbyshire landscapes ( Jo Wright, Goodey et al) - especially the Derwent Valley Mills - and comparing them to photos today. I have contacts in the county council's landscape team and the DVMills (Adrian Farmer) who might be interested in supporting that idea, if necessary. Hope these quick thoughts might help. Deleting articles by a sock of a blocked user

I've been deleting pages created by Team61ROLL. The next time you come upon articles created by a sockpuppet of a blocked user, with no significant contributions by other editors, you can tag them for speedy deletion via criterion G5 instead of going through AfD. Hello Parkywiki. I have declined your speedy deletion nomination of Exoplanet Empires as an article that does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the topic under CSD A7. That criterion did not apply because the article was about a board game (a product), and A7 only applies to articles on real persons or groups, individual animals, organisations, web content and organised events. You also cited "non-notable" as a rationale, A7 is stricter than that. G11 also did not apply because while the style could certainly use improvement, it was far from exclusively promotional. Hyphens and the List of sugar mills in Queensland

Hi Kerry Raymond A very good question - thanks for asking! I understand why you do ask this, though I believe the format I changed it to is both grammatically the correct one, and also that preferred by MOS:HYPHEN and adjusted to that format by WP:AWB, which was the tool I was using to make other edits at the time. Personally, I'm happy to read either usage in this instance, but there are some grammatical rule and guidelines on hyphens which may help us understand why one form is correct, and the other is not. In general there seems to be a trend to use a hyphen only where it adds clarity, but not to do so where it isn't really required or where there is no potential ambiguity. I'm sure you'd agree that there's little ambiguity with "locally owned mills", unlike the phrase "rock-hard cake", which is very different from "rock hard cake" (which sounds like it's hard cake made out of rock). Perhaps this bit from Wikipedia's Manual of Style might also shed some light on the preferred use of the hyphen here: "Avoid using a hyphen after a standard -ly adverb (a newly available home, a wholly owned subsidiary) unless part of a larger compound (a slowly-but-surely strategy). In rare cases, a hyphen can be added to improve clarity if a rewritten alternative is awkward. Rewording is preferable." There are a number of English grammar websites out there which also give detailed rules and explanations for best usage of the hyphen, although I have found one or two less authoritative ones which contradict others. So it can be confusing. Have I made any sense? Had you reverted the edit I certainly wouldn't have jumped up and down and changed it back again. Please note that all of MOS, including MOS:HYPHEN is a guideline, and is therefore not mandatory. Specifically, the main MOS page says that MOS is "a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense." It is not permitted to use AWB to make controversial changes, and the changing of one form of short horizontal line to another form of short horizontal line is most definitely controversial. Continuing to do this, and especially doing it when your edit has been reverted by another editor (which automatically makes it disputed), can lead to having your AWB rights removed. I welcome that advice, though I'd not intentionally reverted any edits like this (or indeed set out to reverts hyphen/no hyphen articles, as discussed above)- but it is really helpful to be forewarned. However, having just checked, I do accept that I did this unintentionally on the Flapper article, for which my apologies. These (to me) trivial edits were all totally incidental to my main current use of AWB to find and remove apostrophes from decades. It's a bit weird that the managers of AWB allow it to make those controversial changes by default, if doing so with that tool is not permitted. Oh well, onwards and upwards on the WP learning curve! I can assure you I'll increase my selectiveness on which recommended edits I make from hereon in, and which I skip, and have now also realised I could have manually turn off automatic WP:MOS fixes, which I've now done to see what difference it makes. BTW: I don't suppose you happen to be able to point me to a list of 'controversial edits' to avoid? Or is it more a case of just being generally staying on top of all the editorial discussions and controversial editing issues around MOS? All I can find is this, which isn't what I really need! Unfortunately, I think it's the latter, just being generally aware of community discussions by monitoring WP:AN, WP:AN/I, WP:AE and other noticeboards. The hyphen-dash controversy is quite an old one, having hit its peak maybe 5 years ago. Right now there is a case at Arbitration about a bot operator, the primary developer of AWB, in fact, who runs an AWB-based bot. One small part of the case is that a number of editors have expressed the opinion that the "do general fixes" part of AWB doesn't necessarily always adhere to community consensus; one even suggested getting rid of the general fixes facility entirely. Since I don't run AWB, I have no experience from that side, but I do see the results in my watchlist, and I think that editor may have a point. Having tried to turn a short list up to FA standard article last year, I know what a nightmare hyphens and dashes can be. (Bl**dy things!) I appreciate your comments. AWB does do an amazing job of spotting and highlighting multiple typos in articles. But it seems daft for it to be allowed to make changes which are deemed controversial. I'm just testing how pre-parsing lists to editing - both with and without MOS fixes enabled - affects the results. Out of a list of 1000 articles searched on for text containing "1980's", AWB selected a new list of 172 articles it says need editing; without applying MOS fixes in that preliminary search, it identified 175 - so not a great difference. I might drop both drop both lists into Excel and identify the extra articles and see what's in them. I'm just about to test the two different AWB settings view the Flapper article you were working on. I really am so sorry. I have had that happen to me, and I know just how (bleep-bleep) frustrating it can be. It wasn't intentional - I was using AWB to review 'New Articles' and maybe it would help if the tool gave half an hour or so before allowing other editors to make edits. But unfortunately it doesn't. And so I see what I see. (It was the duplicate 'of the of the' that I was trying to help clean up - which I hope you appreciated - rather than add the other issue tags, which the tool not unreasonably determined needed adding at that time.) Sounds extremely interesting. I'm at work right now but will check diary/leave allocation and get back to you by Friday night. Though more of a landscape than a people photographer, I think my new camera should be sufficient. I presume you seek good images and capture metadata of editathon attendees, any college staff or alumni they might be able to persuade to come, plus the event activity itself? And it would be a good experience for me to see how experienced editors work with newcomers. I'm sure I could manage that if i can get away. Newcomers tasks reach the 500,000 edits milestone — more data publicly available

As of the last week of June 2022, the newcomers of the world have completed over 500,000 newcomer tasks. In other words, newcomers have made over half a million Wikipedia edits via Growth’s “Suggested Edits” module.

• About 30% of those edits were completed on mobile devices.
• Usage continues to increase; in June 2022 almost 50,000 newcomer tasks were completed.

We have added some new data to Grafana. You can now check the number of edits and reverts by task types, or the number of questions asked to mentors. You can filter the data by wiki.

Ongoing projects and explorations

The new impact module is part of the Positive Reinforcement project. The image displays the mockup for mobile we used for user testing.

We are continuing our work on our new project, Positive Reinforcement. User testing of initial Positive Reinforcement designs was just completed. Interviews were conducted in Arabic, English, and Spanish. The outcome has been published on the Positive Reinforcement page. We are now utilizing user testing feedback along with prior community feedback to iterate and improve designs.

We are exploring the idea of a Copy Edit structured task. We have tested copy edits in Wikipedia articles for arwiki, bnwiki, cswiki, eswiki (Growth pilot-wikis) and enwiki with two different methods: LanguageTool and Hunspell. We will share more details here and on the associated Copy Edit page once the evaluation is complete.

Add an image was utilized at GLAM events in Argentina, Mexico, and Chile. For an overview of what was learned from these events, read: #1Pic1Article I: how Latin American heritage experts added images to Wikipedia (in English).

Experiments analysis

Add a Link Experiment Analysis has been published. The most important points are:

• Newcomers who get the Add a Link structured task are more likely to be activated (i.e. make a constructive first article edit).
• They are also more likely to be retained (i.e. come back and make another constructive article edit on a different day).
• The feature also increases edit volume (i.e. the number of constructive edits made across the first couple weeks), while at the same time improving edit quality (i.e. the likelihood that the newcomer's edits aren't reverted).

Newcomer task edit type analysis has been published.

• Communities had expressed concern that newcomers whose initial edits were structured tasks wouldn’t go on to learn how to complete more difficult tasks. The Growth team data scientist conducted a Newcomer task edit type analysis to see if this was indeed the case.
• Results from analysis indicate that this likely isn’t a significant concern. More than 70% of users who start with the easy task "Add a link" also make another task type. Read the full analysis and methodology here.

News for mentors

A new system for the mentors list

The configuration of the mentors list will change over the next weeks. In the future, mentors will sign up, edit their mentor description and quit using Special:MentorDashboard. This new system will make the development of new features for mentors much easier.

At the moment, the mentor list is a simple page anyone can edit, unless it’s protected. With the new page, mentors will be able to edit only their own description, while administrators will be able to edit the entire mentors' list if needed.

The deployment will happen first at the pilot wikis, then at all wikis. Existing lists of mentors will be automatically converted, no action will be needed from the mentors. [12][13]

Mentors will be informed about the next steps soon, by a message posted on the talk page of existing Mentor lists.

A tip for mentors

Did you know that mentors can filter their mentees' changes at Special:MentorDashboard (and star the ones that require attention)? This feature helps to keep an eye on newcomers' edits, helping mentors to fix minor details, and encourage them if necessary.

And did you know that mentors have special filters to highlight their mentees' edits at Special:RecentChanges? Look for the following filters in RecentChanges: Your starred mentees, Your unstarred mentees.

Other improvements

Some improvements will be made to the mentor dashboard in the coming weeks:

• While we now offer some options for mentors to take a break, the option to quit mentoring was not easy to find. This will be improved. [14]
• Mentors at wikis using FlaggedRevisions will have a way to discover their mentees' pending edits. [15]
• Dashboard discovery for new mentors will be improved. [16]

Recent changes and fixed bugs

• We moved to a new Image Suggestions API. This new API will allow us to deploy Add an Image to more wikis. [17]
• Starting September 19, a few more wikis now offer Add an image to newcomers. These wikis are Greek Wikipedia, Polish Wikipedia, Chinese Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia. [18]
• Add an image has been disabled for a few days due to technical issue. "Add an image" added a blank line instead of an image. This has been fixed. [19]
• In order to know if Special:EditGrowthConfig is used by communities, we now instrument page loads and saves of configuration. [20]

Hi Lina Cardoza. Welcome to Wikipedia! I can point you straight away to the most important policy which may help you determine if it would be possible for a company to have an article about it on Wikipedia. You can find it HERE, and it lists our notability criteria for businesses. We aren't here to help a business promote itself, but if you can find at least three totally independent sources that talk about that company in details and in depth, then it probably would meet our criteria. Those sources exclude paid advertising, press releases, newswire articles, blogs, interviews with connected people, and the company's own website.

To save you wasted effort, feel free to link me to those sources and I will take a quick look at them for you. Then, if they seem OK, I would point you to this guidance page which all new editors should read. But be aware that creating a brand new draft article from scratch is the hardest thing anyone can do here - and that applies much more so for inexperienced editors. So we always advise people to contribute many smaller edits across a range of existing articles first to try to get the hang of how things work here.

Finally, should you work for, are being paid by that business to create an article, you must declare that connection and who is paying you before you start any editing. See WP:PAID for our mandatory policy on how to do this. If you are the business owner, their friend or relative, then you still have a Conflist of Interest which you should also declare.

Hi there Bida thomas. What is the subject you would like to write about? It looks like you've already tried to write an AUTOBIOGRAPHY about yourself, and had it deleted. Every topic here must meet our Notability criteria, which means that other people (not connected with that subject) must already have written about it in detail and in depth. You can't use your own blogs or websites - or indeed anyone's personal blogs or websites for that). For people, the criteria are found HERE, and for companies, HERE. It is one of the hardest tasks to create a Wikipedia article from scratch that meets our criteria, and further advice can be found HERE.

It is good that you have been learning how Wikipedia works by making small edits to existing articles. This is the best way to work out how things operate here, as there are lots of guidelines and policies which can confuse a beginner. I would point out that you must not add inline links to external websites in the body of text in an article (as you did here). Instead, you should cite them properly, please, by adding an inline citation to that source at the end of each statement you insert. See WP:REFBEGIN for how to do that. And when you quote someone, it is essential to add the citation immediately afterwards to help people check that what you say they said, was actually reported in precisely those words. In all other situations you should add content in your own words, and not copy/paste anything from copyrighted publications. I hope this helps, and good luck on your Wikipedia journey. Yes. Everything that anyone writes here is visible to everyone (if you know where to look). All yours are HERE. But as an administrator, I am also able to view deleted contributions, such as the biography you tried to write about yourself. If you genuinely feel you have a notable topic that you want to make an article about, then your best approach is to start a 'Draft' article using the Wizard at Articles for Creation and only submit it when you feel it is ready to be reviewed. Then, one of our volunteers will check it out and leave you feedback if they don't think it is ready yet and will need more work.

Would you like to tell be the subject you want to create an article about and perhaps link to what you believe are the three best sources that you would want to use to show it is a notable topic? I'll gladly give you a few comments as to whether the sources you want to use are appropriate. As mentioned above, personal blogs, social media, personal interviews with the subject, press releases and individual websites are not suitable to demonstrate notability. Wikipedia simply summarises what other independent people have already written about that subject. So books, magazines, and websites with proper editorial oversight are normally needed. New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Nick Moyes,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

• There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
• Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
• Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
• This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Hello there, Hhaiderhhabib and thanks for dropping by. Creating an article from scratch is the very hardest thing any editor can do - and many times more so if that user is like you and has never edited Wikipedia before. I advise against trying until you have learned the basics.

The key thing to understand is that Wikipedia is not here to help you promote businesses or people (see WP:PROMOTION) and that no article would be permitted if that person is not deemed 'notable' by our criteria. You should follow this shortcut and read WP:NBIO, which lays put precisely the criteria that we need to meet 'notability'. To save you a lot of heartache, why not drop by again and let me know the name of the person and leave me the three best Reliable Sources that talk about that person in detail and in depth in an independent manner.

If you are unable to do that then I'm afraid you would simply be wasting your time trying. But if you think there would be a chance of them meeting our notability criteria, you might then want to read "Your First Article" for further advice, and follow this link to read about your obligations to declare any conflict of interest you might have if that person is paying you, or you know them personally. The Wiki Show YouTube channel

Hi Nick, I would be interested in your opinion on the YouTube channel, The Wiki Show. I watched some of their videos and I was very impressed with the way they explained Wikipedia's policies and core features despite having very little edits. I wish more experienced editors and administrators provide video tutorials on this subject. Hello @Hhaiderhhabib. You did not give me a link to the page you want to edit and change, so it's hard to give you detailed advice unless you do.

Normally, just putting the file name you want to see at the top of a page, or a section within a page will do it. You then can choose whether to have it on the left, centre, or right. You can read more about placing pictures at Help:Pictures. Regards, Nick Moyes (talk) 15:22, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

Welcome to the twenty-third newsletter from the Growth team!

Highlights

• Mentorship: We released the new structured mentor list to all wikis. This change makes mentorship easier to setup, manage and use.
• Positive reinforcement: An improved impact module is available for testing.

Positive reinforcement: an improved impact module to test

The goal of the Growth team is to encourage newcomers to try editing for the first time, and encourage them to keep editing. We want to increase newcomers' motivation by showing them how impactful their edits are.

Newcomers have access to an impact module; you can find yours at Special:Impact. The revised impact module provides new editors with more context about their impact. It will display the number of edits, the number of thanks received, the last time they edited, the number of consecutive days they edited, and the number of views for the articles they edited.

This module will soon be available at our pilot wikis starting December 1. You can already test this new module at Beta Wikipedia. For safety reasons, do not use your regular account and password at Beta wiki. Create a new, specific account for this wiki, with a different password.

Structured tasks: improvements based on patroller feedback

After the deployment of Structured tasks, we received feedback from various communities regarding how patrollers of recent changes were feeling overwhelmed by an increase in edits to check, and how some edits were poor quality or of poor relevance.

We made several improvements based on the feedback we received. Several points of improvement have already been addressed:

• Patroller fatigue:
  • By default, newcomers can complete up to 25 "add a link" tasks and 25 "add an image" tasks per day. If patrollers are overburdened, each community can use Special:EditGrowthConfig to lower that limit.

• Quality of edits: what constitutes a "quality edit" is not a well defined concept. We initiated a discussion and summarized our findings. We also worked on the following improvements:
  • Add a Link
    • Underlinked articles are now prioritized, so it's less likely that newcomers are adding links to articles that are already have a lot of links.
    • The confidence score was increased, so suggestions are more likely to be accurate.
    • The default number of suggested links per article has been lowered to 3. This can be changed at Special:EditGrowthConfig. Communities can also exclude articles containing certain templates or categories from being suggested.
  • Add an Image
    • Lists will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions.
    • Disambiguation pages will no longer receive "add an image" suggestions.
    • We have many further improvements we plan to make to "add an image" in early 2023. [21]

The Positive Reinforcement project will also address some of the concerns around encouraging newcomers to progress to higher value edits. The Growth team will soon work on strategies geared at "Leveling up" newcomers so they progress from easy to more difficult tasks.

Recent changes

• All Wikipedias now have the same onboarding experience. Previously, at a few wikis, 20% of new accounts didn't get the Growth features when they created their account. These 20% of new accounts were used as a control group, in order to know if the Growth features were changing newcomers' behavior. Experiments have shown that Growth features improve activation and retention, and as we want to provide the same onboarding experience at all Wikipedias, we have decided to remove the control groups. We will utilize control groups when testing new features, and German Wikipedia keeps a control group at their request. [22]
• The quality score for "add a link" suggestions will change. We will suggest less links for each article, but they will be more accurate. We will first deploy it at our pilot wikis, and then to all other wikis where this feature is available. [23][24]
• Growth's features FAQ has been updated and expanded. This page centralizes all the information about Growth features. We invite you to read it, and, if you can, to translate it.

News for mentors

• All Wikipedias can now setup and manage a mentorship program in an easier way.
  • We changed the process to make it more reliable, easier to improve and easier to use.
  • Wikipedias where mentorship hasn't been enabled yet can turn mentorship on following a new process. When done, mentors can sign-up by visiting Special:MentorDashboard.
  • Wikipedias where the list of mentors already existed have been converted to the new system.
  • A new special page — Special:ManageMentors — now displays the list of mentors. This page can be transcluded on any other page. There are also new processes to signup as a mentor or to quit mentorship, and we improved community mentorship management.
• The Mentor dashboard's "Your mentees" module will have a new footer, called "Recent changes by your mentees". This footer will include a link to Recent changes, where mentors can see only edits made by their own mentees. [25]

• Add a link has been deployed to a 5th round of wikis. [26]
