Your questions about sources for biographies of Russian individuals[edit]

Just wanted to thank you for the welcome message! I did actually have a small question if that's okay.

I'm running into a problem with finding sources for Russian and eastern European figures. I did some work on the articles for Pavel Blonsky and Lev Kassil. They both were influential in their times and respective fields, but there's basically zero reputable sources on them in English.

I was wondering, how would you recommend finding sources? Is there a way to ask Russian speaking editors to help flesh out these articles by translating direct from the Russian? Thanks! MunsterManicotti5092 (talk) 22:17, 27 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello MunsterManicotti5092. I've moved your question here so you'll see my response, and be able to refer to it later if you wish to; it will eventually get archived on my Talk page and will become hard to locate.

If your first question is about the appropriateness of using citations to sources in Russian, yes, you may. the governing policy here is WP:Verifiability, and in particular, the section on § Non-English sources. So, finding English sources is not required, and if the only sources available are Russian, just use those sources, and cite them.

If you meant, how to find more sources about a topic, there are a number of ways and I'd recommend you start with Help:Finding sources. I find a lot of my sources (in whatever language) in the online databases (500 of them) held by my local public library, and many more using the Wikpedia:Library. If you meant, how to find a specific source you know about but don't have access to, after you've tried every way you know how to locate a copy of it, then you can try WP:RX; but do that last, when nothing else works.

You can probably get help from Russian-speaking editors if you have very specific questions (like, "what does this sentence mean?"); there are lists of Russian speakers or translators in Wikipedia's WP:Categories system; if that's what you meant, I can find a link to them. Another way, is to go to a WP:WikiProject like WP:WikiProject Russia, which is less about translating specific phrases (although you might get lucky if you don't do it too often) and more about general questions and comments about all things Russian at Wikipedia. For example, at the WikiProject you could ask if anyone knows anything about Lev Kassil, or just ask the same questions there you asked me. Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
refrain from gaming the system.

Use of machine translation at Robotyne[edit]

Hi!

It would be helpful if you could 1) be more clear about your use of machine translation when porting articles and 2) carefully check the output for errors (“Northern Military District” type stuff). I’m about to fix a “smoking gun” error that I’ve seen Telegram sometime make.
