ok[edit]

You sure youre in the right place - geraldton article is beginning to look like a voyage article. WikiVoyage - wikipedia is an opnline encyclopedia not a tourist guide -

5 Things to do in Geraldton

Each week, Geraldton hosts many activities that appeal to a diverse range of tastes. Markets, family fetes, outdoor movies, comedy shows and other events can regularly be found around the city. A calendar of events hosted by Everything Geraldton exists to keep the community and visitors informed about activities happening in Geraldton.

That is not en encylopediac entry. And sunset shots are always a dead giveaway.

Satusuro, thank you for your feedback and suggestions. I very much appreciate the time you have taken to help. As you would be aware, I have so far only limited experience editing on Wikipedia, so all suggestions are welcome. I will do my best to incorporate your guidance and recommendations into the edits. When I have more time and am not at work I will read closely the information you have recommended and take these guidelines on board.
BTW, the paragraph above was not added by me -- I only corrected a dead URL that I found. The same for the sunset photograph of St Georges Beach. It was already in the Geraldton entry when I found it.
Again, many thanks for your help.
  • a number of things = WP:ABOUT and WP:NOT and WP:MOS - you are embedding too many external links into the next. Not on. either as refs or they are out.
Once again, thank you. I will take this on board.

Also sitting on the one article and filling it can be a trap and make you look like a WP:SPA - get out of the Geraldton article and have a look at Kalgoorlie, Bunbury, Albany.... or other regional towns in Australia to compare. Take care - expect reversions when somebody stumble on some fo your stuff - that is part of the course. satusuro 02:07, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I shall do this. In fact, the benchmark comparison I have been using is the Wikipedia entry for Mackay, QLD. I will look at the towns you have suggested and I look forward to hearing your feedback again when convenient.
May I engage you as a Wikipedia mentor, as suggested?

Edits required[edit]

WP:MOS - external links embedded in text are incorrect - please either re-place them in WP:CITE format - that is put the ref//ref wiki character on either side of the link, or remove, thanks satusuro 02:49, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Geraldton&action=history - that is what is required - any help with the rest of the article would be appreciated. Also if you mske assertions about anything a WP:RS or WP:CITE is needed - the Yamatji council exists - yup, what about a supporting reference from something other than the council itself - something from Trove for instance satusuro 03:05, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you[edit]

for your reply it was hard to see at first

try to keep talk items separate going down the page and also learn to WP:SIGN - i have no problem with trying to help. satusuro 09:40, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Geraldton/Greater Geraldton[edit]

In the Geraldton article you seem to be confusing Geraldton and the City of Greater Geraldton, and randomly interchanging them. Sections such as Economy refer to the City of Greater Geraldton and should be in that WP article. You might like to look at the regional economic data and pull out the stuff that's specific to Geraldton, but I'm not sure that's an easy task. Your population figures also seem to be for the City of Greater Geraldton (39,311), rather than for Geraldton (Significant Urban Area) - pop. 35,749. When reading about Geraldton, I think people expect the article to be about the Geraldton urban area, not an artificial 12,625 sq km region that includes country towns like Mullewa (90km away), Walkaway, Pindar and Tardun, and all the agricultural land between. I've been tempted to wade in and sort it out but you don't seem to have finished your editing, so I've held off. Again - there are two WP articles and we need to be careful what goes into which. regards John beta (talk) 05:52, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Geraldton/Greater Geraldton[edit]

Thanks John. You raise a very valid point. The LGAs of Geraldton, Greenough and Mullewa were amalgamated in July 2011 (after the 2007 amalgamation of Geraldton and Greenough) so today all of the information that is available statistically (e.g. ABS etc) refers to the City of Greater Geraldton and as far as I am aware, "Geraldton" per se isn't tracked independently now. I take your point that this could potentially confound some of the data including population stats and economy, though the contributions of the additional shires are relatively small by comparison.

Please do feel free to suggest any alternative approaches or to wade in and have a shot at it. I'm relatively new at the Wikipedia editing game and trying to tread as carefully as I can, adding what value that I think might be useful to readers, but also knowing that I'm likely to stumble here and there. Thanks for your feedback. I look forward to and welcome any additional suggestions/comments.

On a different subject, would you have any idea why my User Page that I created last week would have simply vanished in the past day or so? I created it about a week ago and it was still there a couple days ago but today it is as though it never existed and nothing at all shows in the delete log. Odd. Any insights appreciated.Mistral2099 (talk) 07:24, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

On the ABS matter - I suggest you look at: http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/census_services/getproduct/census/2011/quickstat/5006?opendocument&navpos=220 or http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/census_services/getproduct/census/2011/quickstat/UCL522043?opendocument&navpos=220 or http://www.censusdata.abs.gov.au/census_services/getproduct/census/2011/quickstat/SSC50791?opendocument&navpos=220
On the other matter - it sounds like you you were seeing it in preview mode and didn't hit Save Page. I didn't notice that you had a user page at anytime over the last week.
regards John beta (talk) 08:10, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks John. Unfortunately, I think you may be correct -- though I thought I had made edits to it after the initial setup but perhaps not. Dang. All that work gone. Shall give it another shot when I get a bit of time. Thanks for your input.

BTW, one issue that makes sourcing stats a bit tricky is that I work for the City here (I had declared this on the page I put together...) and we have a contract with a company called REMPLAN that provides an ABS database mining tool based on Greater Geraldton but not Geraldton per se. Not a travel guide[edit]

Mistral, I notice that you've already attracted negative comment re WP guidelines for the Geraldton article. You will get more. I suggest you look through WP:NOTGUIDE. regards John beta (talk) 02:07, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
