I've just recreated the above page, which you deleted under {{db-a7}} on 21 August 2006. I'm not an admin, so could only see the first part of the deleted content in the "content was" part of the edit summary when I began to edit, but from what I saw there (notably date and place of birth) it looks as though the same Ronald Bird was the subject. The page I've now written does assert his notability, but since you were the person who deleted the previous version, I thought I'd mention its recreation here as a courtesy to you. MetsBot and commons

I noticed that the bot has reviewed this image as passing the requirements for deletion. However, at the time the image on commons actually had substantially different source and author information. This link lead me to believe that the bot would not have approved it in that case. I know it's been released to the public domain, but correct attribution still seems important. I updated the information, but thought I'd ask if this was acceptable behavior for the review bot. --Pekaje 11:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pekaje. I don't really think the bot messed up in this case; the summary for the image here was contained fully in the summary for the image when it was moved to commons, and correct attribution, while nice, is not legally required for public domain images. If it had been marked as GFDL or CC, the bot would have complained about invalid source/license stuff. —METS501 (talk) 01:05, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough, just thought I'd ask. The only reason I noticed was that I mentioned to the professor that we do usually credit the source, even for public domain images (though nobody is legally required to do so). I would have uploaded it directly to commons if the original uploader hadn't uploaded it again (it was deleted a couple of times) 2 minutes before I was able to. Now that I'm here, there is one question I haven't seen clearly answered anywhere yet: In the case of GFDL images with multiple versions in the history, do they all need to be uploaded to Commons as well? From the guidelines it can be read as if only the upload log and the latest revision is necessary, though it seems wrong to me. Metsbot usage request

Hi Mets,

I am attempting to swap out parameter names for {{Infobox Country}} and remove commas from those fields, but AWB is running really slow and driving me nuts. Can you program your bot to swap out these names? Below is a list of the parameter name changes, which can also be seen in this diff

Old name = New name

areami² = area_sq_mi
FR_IGN_area = FR_IGN_area_km2
FR_IGN_areami² = FR_IGN_area_sq_mi

The bot definitely can, but I'm extraordinarily busy right now in real life to program it to do it. There's plenty to do! You could do typo fixing (check the RegexTypoFix box and Google search for a misspelled word like "vaccum" or something), you could do wikiproject tagging, or a number of other things. —METS501 (talk) 03:20, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

AWB Find and Replace with RegEx

Hi Mets,

I was wondering if you had time to help me with a regular expression find and replace. If you don't have the time, perhaps you could point me to the right person who knows the regex stuff well.

What I want to do is to use the find and replace function in AWB to remove commas (or spaces) in numbers within parameters of an infobox template. For example, if the parameter |area= has a value entered of 102,003. I want to have AWB replace it with 102003. That way calculations can be done on that raw formated number. Hello! On Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Feature requests/Archive 2#special handling for Personendaten template you said the de.wikipedia sorting order would be fixed in the next release. Possible improvement to NowCommons reviewer bot

Hi. I had my bot recently mark about 3800 media files mark {{NowCommons}} because they were identical to files on Commons and had an uploader with the same name. I saw that some (possibly many) got a bad review from the bot, because they may not have been transfers from here, but new uploads, not containing en.wp source information. The media may also have a more free or more restricted license on Commons (f.e. here cc-by, on Commons cc-by-sa, which is less free). It would be nice if you could add some logic in the bot to process those cases. If the license here is more free, we could just add CommonsHelper information to have the license transferred. Hi Siebrand. I just opened one randomly and found Image:Mississippistateseal.jpg. The uploaders on en.wiki must be credited on Commons for non-public domain images, and since the bot wasn't sure if it was or wasn't public domain (on en.wiki it was marked fair use, while on commons it was marked pd), it thought that the uploaders would need to be credited. The part about the license is obviously going to provoke the bot; those licenses are complete opposites of each other. Then again, that was one example; if you have other problems let me know. Also, about the more-free, less-free thing, the license cannot be changed at all when it is transferred to commons. We legally cannot take away or grant freedoms to images. —METS501 (talk) 00:42, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it appears to be more difficult than I portraied above. However, if the files are on Commons and on a local wiki, one of the two should ideally be removed. What is policy here if a file is tagged ncd and your bot marks it 'not OK'? Is the tag removed, or is the conflict solved manually by the admin on duty?

Second question: do you see any possibilities in automating processing of CommonsClash? I think that would be very great, not only for en.wp, but also for other Wikimedia wikis with larger media repos. Cheers! Siebrand 10:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

The bot doesn't remove any images or tags; what should happen is that admins fix it (or users fix it) manually and then it is deleted. It can't be deleted until its fixed though (by policy). And about CommonsClash, I may be able to implement it, but right now I'm about as busy as I've ever been in my life, so it'll have to be put on hold :-) —METS501 (talk) 00:48, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Bad Boys Blue page

Hello, I need your help with user Zureks repeated upload of inappropriate images to the page. He keeps adding a fan picture of himself with 1 of the two current band formations to make it look as a fair representation of the band. I would appreciate if you would advise that individual to stop that sort of activity. Thanks.

1) Groups that have multiple formations normally have their main image that is "comprehensive" - (e.g. as in Baccara, Boney M) - that is from the "era" before the split into 2 different and concurrently existing formations. 2) It is not right to just put a picture of himself (the guy with ID tag) surrounded by band members - who, only represent 1 of the two current formations of the group and claim that the image actually represents Bad Boys Blue. Please see info box, there are 2 equivalent parts to the group. Btw, the image contains 2 band members, a singer's wife, and a fan. The image is a fan picture - it does not belong in that portion of the article. Thanks again.

Wikipedia Harp Range Image

Dear Mets501:

First, let me thank you for your contibutions to Wikipedia.

One small item in particular caught my eye and I wanted, if I might, to bring it to your attention: your harp range graphic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harp and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Range_harp.png) shows the top note of the instrument as a "b" five ledger lines above the treble clef but, alas, the instrument only goes to the "g" four ledger lines above the treble clef. Actually the range goes to "g#", just as the lowest note can be tuned to "Cb" or even "B." I can speak to this as a longtime harp owner, performer, arranger and composer. (A couple examples of my work: I'm currently editing the harp part of "The Fantasticks" for its composer Harvey Schmidt and have lectured on the harp music of Maurice Ravel with a harpist who collaborated with him. I currently work in the Los Angeles area and can be heard on dozens of albums, in film scores, and often in live theater.)

This is in error. User AzaToth attempted to replaced the Antialiased.png image with another one he or she created. User Dicklyon reverted that change. Therefore, neither of these two users have actually uploaded Image:Antialiased.png.

Am I missing something?

Hi, I was wondering if you could take a look at Image:Mandatory road sign stop.png, and see why it didn't pass your bot's requirements for deletion. This image was transfered to Commons with [[5]], which is heavily used and if it's missing something we should let the creator know. On the other hand, your bot did approve at least one image I'm aware of that was transfer in a the fashion. See: Image:Diamond road sign pedestrians.png - the information and transfer method are nearly identical. So why does your bot approve one and not the other. Just curious. Some time back you ran Metsbot to replace 'Convert' calls with the resultant wikitext. If you have plans to do so again in the future you may want to look at Template:Conv. I combined two previously existing substitutable templates (for distances and temperatures) and expanded it to cover everything 'Convert' does. The difference being that 'Conv' requires substitution and produces just the wikitext rather than the full transcluded template logic. The syntax is that same, so {{convert|<whatever>}} can be replaced with {{subst:conv|<whatever>}}. --CBD 12:47, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I was wondering if i can use your bot to change Category:Year of birth missing to Category:Year of birth missing (living people) when Category:Living people exists. The bot is adding people in the "possibly living people" category to the "year of birth missing (living people)" category, despite the fact that the category specifically says "For individuals in Category:Possibly living people and historically recent individuals who are no longer alive, please use Category:Year of birth missing." Do you have an example? The bot should be working inside the "Year of birth missing" category. I've been following it since it began yesterday (i checked hundreds of diff in articles) and it seemed working fine to me. We can fix all these with the bot. We have to run the bot in the "Possible living people" and replace ALL "YOB missing (living people)" to "YOB missing". With a bot it's faster and more accurate. -- Magioladitis 17:42, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Bot replacing references with reflist

Hi, Mets501 -- I recently changed an edit by Metsbot that replaced <references/> with {{reflist}}. Reflist is for longer lists -- from Template:Reflist#Usage, "Note that there is no consensus that small font size should always be used for all references; when normal-sized font is more appropriate on an article, use <references /> instead." Wikipedia:Footnotes#How to use has similar guidance: "Place the <references /> tag (9 or fewer references) or {{reflist}} tag (10 or more) in a "Notes" or "References" section near the end of the article—the list of notes will be generated here."

Can you update your bot to avoid replacing <references /> (unless it can determine that it's a long list)? Thanks! -- JHunterJ 13:18, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
