I've just recreated the above page, which you deleted under {{db-a7}} on 21 August 2006. I'm not an admin, so could only see the first part of the deleted content in the "content was" part of the edit summary when I began to edit, but from what I saw there (notably date and place of birth) it looks as though the same Ronald Bird was the subject. The page I've now written does assert his notability, but since you were the person who deleted the previous version, I thought I'd mention its recreation here as a courtesy to you. Loganberry (Talk) 01:15, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Well, your version does look notable on first review, so I'd say it's a keeper (at least that's my "vote") —METS501 (talk) 01:28, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks - I hope so! If a captain of a first-class county who'd played nearly 200 games wasn't considered notable, then about 98% of cricketers' articles would have to go... Loganberry (Talk) 01:40, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot and commons

I noticed that the bot has reviewed this image as passing the requirements for deletion. However, at the time the image on commons actually had substantially different source and author information. This link lead me to believe that the bot would not have approved it in that case. I know it's been released to the public domain, but correct attribution still seems important. I updated the information, but thought I'd ask if this was acceptable behavior for the review bot. --Pekaje 11:50, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pekaje. I don't really think the bot messed up in this case; the summary for the image here was contained fully in the summary for the image when it was moved to commons, and correct attribution, while nice, is not legally required for public domain images. If it had been marked as GFDL or CC, the bot would have complained about invalid source/license stuff. —METS501 (talk) 01:05, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough, just thought I'd ask. The only reason I noticed was that I mentioned to the professor that we do usually credit the source, even for public domain images (though nobody is legally required to do so). I would have uploaded it directly to commons if the original uploader hadn't uploaded it again (it was deleted a couple of times) 2 minutes before I was able to. Now that I'm here, there is one question I haven't seen clearly answered anywhere yet: In the case of GFDL images with multiple versions in the history, do they all need to be uploaded to Commons as well? From the guidelines it can be read as if only the upload log and the latest revision is necessary, though it seems wrong to me. What is the correct way to do it? --Pekaje 04:40, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Hmmm. Thats a good question, and one that I don't know the answer to :-). Perhaps ask on Template talk:NowCommons or at the village pump. —METS501 (talk) 11:07, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi... the bot balked. But that's me; I swear on a stack. So what to do? Cheers. --Rrburke(talk) 14:19, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi. To appease the bot (and Wikipedia guidelines), just add a link on the commons image page to your en.wiki username. —METS501 (talk) 01:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Metsbot and Commons.

OK So it's tagging images that were moved as not being on commons?

Huh? The images were moved, and exist on commons. Perhaps you should tell the bot to also check directly by filename?

ShakespeareFan00 20:02, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Can you please give me specific examples of the errors committed by the bot (specific files)? Thank you. —METS501 (talk) 01:07, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Metsbot failed with Image:Brit IndianEmpireReligions3.jpg, because say the bot "This image does not give credit to uploader Fowler&fowler on Commons." , and in commons this image have credit to uploader Fowler&fowler,

Metsbot usage request

Hi Mets,

I am attempting to swap out parameter names for {{Infobox Country}} and remove commas from those fields, but AWB is running really slow and driving me nuts. Can you program your bot to swap out these names? Below is a list of the parameter name changes, which can also be seen in this diff

Old name = New name

area = area_km2
areami² = area_sq_mi
FR_IGN_area = FR_IGN_area_km2
FR_IGN_areami² = FR_IGN_area_sq_mi
FR_cadastre_area = FR_cadastre_area_km2
FR_cadastre_areami² = FR_cadastre_area_sq_mi
population_density = population_density_km2
population_densitymi² = population_density_sq_mi

Also, is there a way to have the bot remove any commas or spaces between the numbers in the fields? If not, it is not that big of a deal.

Let me know if if your bot is available to do this?

Thanks,
MJCdetroit 02:20, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

The bot definitely can, but I'm extraordinarily busy right now in real life to program it to do it. If you've already got AWB set up to do it, then create a bot account, list it at WP:BRFA, and I'll approve you to make the edits automatically (without having to approve each one) —METS501 (talk) 02:24, 3 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I've got AWB set up to swap the names but not to remove the commas. However, the comma removal is not that important at the moment. I'll set up a bot account as you suggest. Thanks,—MJCdetroit 02:30, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I have a question. When should I use AWB? If I am not allowed to make insignificant edits. Chris! ct 03:16, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
There's plenty to do! You could do typo fixing (check the RegexTypoFix box and Google search for a misspelled word like "vaccum" or something), you could do wikiproject tagging, or a number of other things. —METS501 (talk) 03:20, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

AWB Find and Replace with RegEx

Hi Mets,

I was wondering if you had time to help me with a regular expression find and replace. If you don't have the time, perhaps you could point me to the right person who knows the regex stuff well.

What I want to do is to use the find and replace function in AWB to remove commas (or spaces) in numbers within parameters of an infobox template. For example, if the parameter |area= has a value entered of 102,003. I want to have AWB replace it with 102003. That way calculations can be done on that raw formated number. Any advise? —MJCdetroit 03:30, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Hmmm...that's pretty difficult. You'd need a pretty complex one (I think). I'm extremely busy at the moment; you could try asking at WP:BOWN or WT:AWB as a start though. —METS501 (talk) 03:42, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

I'll do that. Thanks,—MJCdetroit 14:28, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

I figured it out and posted the the regexs at WT:AWB. I programed my AWB and I am trialing them at the moment using my regular account. I have requested this as a second task for my bot. Do you think that you could review the second task and approve it here. Thanks, —MJCdetroit 02:35, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

I marked it as being at the commons with the same name and the bot caught it.

I retagged it with the new image name. Was that the right thing to do? -- Carol 05:23, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Yep, that worked. In the future, you can just remove both the bot's message and the old {{NowCommons}} template. —METS501 (talk) 20:44, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

AWB sorting order

Hello! On Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Feature requests/Archive 2#special handling for Personendaten template you said the de.wikipedia sorting order would be fixed in the next release. Version 4.1.2.0 from September 23 still moves the Personendaten template on top of the categories. Could you double-check? --08-15 10:51, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Hmm...I thought it was fixed. I'll ask at WP:AWB/DEV. —METS501 (talk) 20:44, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

Image:Fortstreetcigcard.jpg

Yes, I wanted to know why this is not a candidate for deletion. It is in the Commons category, Australian public domain images. If that isn't a specific enough category, then would you please direct me to one that is? Thanks, James-SugronoContributions 04:54, 10 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi. It needs to be in a category with similar images so it can be found. Maybe Category:Schools or something would be appropriate. Or even better, you can make a category! —METS501 (talk) 02:10, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

AWB

I know that this will seem really stupid to ask, but, is there a way that I can get the, for want of a better word, power to approve users for use of it? Thanks in advance for your answer. Your Grace Lord Sir Dreamy of Buckland tm 02:45, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi. To approve users to use WP:AWB, the users must be added to a checkpage which is fully protected to prevent abuse. Therefore, you must have administrative privileges to approve users. Sorry. —METS501 (talk) 04:22, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Possible improvement to NowCommons reviewer bot

Hi. I had my bot recently mark about 3800 media files mark {{NowCommons}} because they were identical to files on Commons and had an uploader with the same name. I saw that some (possibly many) got a bad review from the bot, because they may not have been transfers from here, but new uploads, not containing en.wp source information. The media may also have a more free or more restricted license on Commons (f.e. here cc-by, on Commons cc-by-sa, which is less free). It would be nice if you could add some logic in the bot to process those cases. If the license here is more free, we could just add CommonsHelper information to have the license transferred. If the license on Commons is more free, that's just great. :) Cheers! Siebrand 21:59, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh, if you really feel like exploring unexplored territory, you could try and process the results in this URL with the NowCommons bot. Cheers! Siebrand 22:10, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi Siebrand. I just opened one randomly and found Image:Mississippistateseal.jpg. The uploaders on en.wiki must be credited on Commons for non-public domain images, and since the bot wasn't sure if it was or wasn't public domain (on en.wiki it was marked fair use, while on commons it was marked pd), it thought that the uploaders would need to be credited. The part about the license is obviously going to provoke the bot; those licenses are complete opposites of each other. Then again, that was one example; if you have other problems let me know. Also, about the more-free, less-free thing, the license cannot be changed at all when it is transferred to commons. We legally cannot take away or grant freedoms to images. —METS501 (talk) 00:42, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it appears to be more difficult than I portraied above. However, if the files are on Commons and on a local wiki, one of the two should ideally be removed. What is policy here if a file is tagged ncd and your bot marks it 'not OK'? Is the tag removed, or is the conflict solved manually by the admin on duty?
Second question: do you see any possibilities in automating processing of CommonsClash? I think that would be very great, not only for en.wp, but also for other Wikimedia wikis with larger media repos. Cheers! Siebrand 10:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC)
The bot doesn't remove any images or tags; what should happen is that admins fix it (or users fix it) manually and then it is deleted. It can't be deleted until its fixed though (by policy). And about CommonsClash, I may be able to implement it, but right now I'm about as busy as I've ever been in my life, so it'll have to be put on hold :-) —METS501 (talk) 00:48, 26 October 2007 (UTC)

Giorgio Orsini article renamed contrary to the closed debate

Request to move (re-name article) Giorgio Orsini to Giorgio da Sebenico ended with no consensus. You were the administrator who closed this case. See [2]

However, one of the voters unilateraly renamed this article. See [3]

Could you, please, enforce the decision to not rename article i.e. keep the article name as it was before?

Bad Boys Blue page

Hello, I need your help with user Zureks repeated upload of inappropriate images to the page. He keeps adding a fan picture of himself with 1 of the two current band formations to make it look as a fair representation of the band. I would appreciate if you would advise that individual to stop that sort of activity. Thanks.

Hi. I'm sorry, but I don't quite get what's wrong with the addition of the photo as evidence of what the band looks like. —METS501 (talk) 20:40, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
1) Groups that have multiple formations normally have their main image that is "comprehensive" - (e.g. as in Baccara, Boney M) - that is from the "era" before the split into 2 different and concurrently existing formations. 2) It is not right to just put a picture of himself (the guy with ID tag) surrounded by band members - who, only represent 1 of the two current formations of the group and claim that the image actually represents Bad Boys Blue. Please see info box, there are 2 equivalent parts to the group. Btw, the image contains 2 band members, a singer's wife, and a fan. The image is a fan picture - it does not belong in that portion of the article. Thanks again.
I see what you're saying, but I'm not just going to go ahead and remove it. I'd try to work out the dispute on the talk page of the article. —METS501 (talk) 23:05, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
No problem. However, since it is he who attempts to add garbage to the article, it will be up to him to use talkpage and try to convince as to why he is doing it... *before* that picture is to land on the article. He's not going to just barge in on that page and show himself off. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.7.207.223 (talk) 23:25, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Harp Range Image

Dear Mets501:

First, let me thank you for your contibutions to Wikipedia.

One small item in particular caught my eye and I wanted, if I might, to bring it to your attention: your harp range graphic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harp and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Range_harp.png) shows the top note of the instrument as a "b" five ledger lines above the treble clef but, alas, the instrument only goes to the "g" four ledger lines above the treble clef. Actually the range goes to "g#", just as the lowest note can be tuned to "Cb" or even "B." I can speak to this as a longtime harp owner, performer, arranger and composer. (A couple examples of my work: I'm currently editing the harp part of "The Fantasticks" for its composer Harvey Schmidt and have lectured on the harp music of Maurice Ravel with a harpist who collaborated with him. I currently work in the Los Angeles area and can be heard on dozens of albums, in film scores, and often in live theater.)

Thanks, again, for your work and please feel free to contact me if I may be of any assistance.

Sincerely, -Alexander Rannie —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arannie (talkcontribs) 04:35, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know! I've updated the image. —METS501 (talk) 23:24, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Review of Image:Antialiased.png is in error

You have left the comment

"MetsBot has reviewed this image and it may not pass the requirements for deletion. (what does this mean?)

   * This image does not give credit to uploader Dicklyon on Commons.
   * This image does not give credit to uploader AzaToth on Commons.

This is in error. User AzaToth attempted to replaced the Antialiased.png image with another one he or she created. User Dicklyon reverted that change. Therefore, neither of these two users have actually uploaded Image:Antialiased.png.

I am undoing your edit.

Am I missing something?

Hi, I was wondering if you could take a look at Image:Mandatory road sign stop.png, and see why it didn't pass your bot's requirements for deletion. This image was transfered to Commons with [[5]], which is heavily used and if it's missing something we should let the creator know. On the other hand, your bot did approve at least one image I'm aware of that was transfer in a the fashion. See: Image:Diamond road sign pedestrians.png - the information and transfer method are nearly identical. So why does your bot approve one and not the other. Just curious. Rocket000 07:04, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi. I think it had to do with the unlinking of the 1984, but I couldn't be certain. Either way, I've deleted it, as it clearly passes the requirements for deletion. —METS501 (talk) 20:33, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Metsbot and unit conversion templates

Some time back you ran Metsbot to replace 'Convert' calls with the resultant wikitext. If you have plans to do so again in the future you may want to look at Template:Conv. I combined two previously existing substitutable templates (for distances and temperatures) and expanded it to cover everything 'Convert' does. The difference being that 'Conv' requires substitution and produces just the wikitext rather than the full transcluded template logic. The syntax is that same, so {{convert|<whatever>}} can be replaced with {{subst:conv|<whatever>}}. --CBD 12:47, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Bot request for Year of birth missing

Hi. I was wondering if i can use your bot to change Category:Year of birth missing to Category:Year of birth missing (living people) when Category:Living people exists. I've done about 1,500 edits with AWB, but I would prefer to do it automatically. There are still 25,000 articles to check. -- Magioladitis 10:42, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

No problem; getting to it. —METS501 (talk) 21:30, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! -- Magioladitis 22:48, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
The bot is adding people in the "possibly living people" category to the "year of birth missing (living people)" category, despite the fact that the category specifically says "For individuals in Category:Possibly living people and historically recent individuals who are no longer alive, please use Category:Year of birth missing." Cheers, CP 15:44, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Do you have an example? The bot should be working inside the "Year of birth missing" category. I've been following it since it began yesterday (i checked hundreds of diff in articles) and it seemed working fine to me. As i noticed the bot stopped some hours ago. -- Magioladitis 16:03, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Albert Brehme, Otto Aasen, Manuel Fernando Zurita‎ are three that I've seen (and undid the revisions, you'll need to check the history), I'm looking for more. Cheers, CP 16:30, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Here's more than I haven't reverted yet: Irving Davis, Paddy Duncan, Oscar Geier, Fritz Grau, Hans Hess, Fritz Horn, Dumitru Hubert, Masaji Iguro, Carl Johnson (soccer), F. Burke Jones, Arnholdt Kongsgaard, Josef Lanzendörfer, Max Ludwig, Jack Lyons (soccer), Cyril Musil, George Nemchik, Fred O'Conner, Kazuyoshi Oimatsu, Bernt Østerkløft, Arthur Rudd, Karel Růžička, Fritz Schwarz, František Šimůnek, José Villanueva, Hermann von Valta and Herbert Wells (soccer). Cheers, CP 16:38, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Obviously, at some point, the bot went into a subcategory of Living people instead of just staying there. :( I hope Mets corrects that. -- Magioladitis 17:40, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
We can fix all these with the bot. We have to run the bot in the "Possible living people" and replace ALL "YOB missing (living people)" to "YOB missing". With a bot it's faster and more accurate. -- Magioladitis 17:42, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Oh, sorry, I know my mistake. I'm going to send the bot out to fix it. —METS501 (talk) 22:10, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
There are not so many. It won't take a lot. Afterwards the bot can finish the job with the living people. -- Magioladitis 22:23, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Spiffy! Cheers, CP 21:19, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Hey, Mets501 now that the problem is solved can you continue the recategorisation only for the people in the "Year of birth missing" category who are tagger as "Living people" as well? Friendly, Magioladitis 03:06, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Yep, certainly. It's resumed now. —METS501 (talk) 03:37, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
Great! Magioladitis 10:54, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Bot replacing references with reflist

Hi, Mets501 -- I recently changed an edit by Metsbot that replaced <references/> with {{reflist}}. Reflist is for longer lists -- from Template:Reflist#Usage, "Note that there is no consensus that small font size should always be used for all references; when normal-sized font is more appropriate on an article, use <references /> instead." Wikipedia:Footnotes#How to use has similar guidance: "Place the <references /> tag (9 or fewer references) or {{reflist}} tag (10 or more) in a "Notes" or "References" section near the end of the article—the list of notes will be generated here."

Can you update your bot to avoid replacing <references /> (unless it can determine that it's a long list)? Thanks! -- JHunterJ 13:18, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

That's actually a problem with AutoWikiBrowser. I actually have to run now; it would be great if you could report it at WP:AWB/B to be fixed (you can say that I agree with you); otherwise I'll do it tomorrow. —METS501 (talk) 21:39, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! -- JHunterJ 17:04, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
At this moment, it is not yet fixed. I updated with last AWB version which fixes the superscript problem but the references problem remains. Lantonov 10:16, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
It's gonna be ok in the next version. -- Magioladitis 10:54, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I would like to clone this bot, as it might go offline if you are not using it, or not currently using it, and it would get all of it done faster. With a clone, it would get all of it done. If you will allow me to clone it, I would prefer you to comment on it on my talk page. I would only like to do one task though. Dreamy § 21:59, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi,

I saw the bot was trying to delete this image as it was moved to commons. Seems that it was unsuccessful for some reason. Just to let you know... User A1 (talk) 15:54, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

deleting images?

Why is your bot trying to delete my images which have the proper tags and OTRS information?--Mike Searson (talk) 01:48, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Please read User:MetsBot/Commons_tagging. I think it will address your concerns. —METS501 (talk) 03:11, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
Understood! Thanks and sorry for the mix-up! --Mike Searson (talk) 05:04, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
No problem at all. —METS501 (talk) 05:05, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

MetsBot marked this picture for deletion. The image belongs to Category:Courthouses in Illinois. If the image is moved to Commons and deleted from Wikipedia, we won't be able to categorize it here, correct? Mingusboodle (talk) 20:36, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Correct. If I were you, I would move all the images in that category to commons, and then create a commons category and add it to a "see also" section of the category here. —METS501 (talk) 15:59, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
