Conflict of interest[edit]

Information icon Hello, Mahmike7. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article User talk:Orangemike, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:37, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:37, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Education at work[edit]

Hi there. I saw your note on the talk page of Orangemike. If there is a company that you are doing research about and want to start a page on them, that's fine. The key thing is that the concept of "notability" has to be met for the page to be preserved in the long run. Essentially Wikipedia articles need to be topics about which there are at least 2 and better 3 or more separate pieces of substantial coverage about that subject published by independent sources of presumed reliability. In other words, if aspects of the history of Company X is covered in (for example) Trade Journal A, Newspaper B, Newspaper C, and part of a book chapter in Book D, it is said to meet the "General Notability Guideline" for inclusion. Blogs and company websites do not count for notability purposes, although such information may be used with due caution in a Wikipedia article.

There are also some more specific "special" notability rules for companies, but in general if you stick to the principles of the GNG, outlined above, that will protect your work against deletion.

I would advise you against submitting a new piece to Articles for Creation, which is a broken process; just start the piece in "mainspace" when you have a chance to do steady work on it. It helps to put up a "Construction" banner at the top of the page while you are working, which is {{construction}} (that is, two opening curly brackets, the word construction, and two closing curly brackets). If you have any other questions or run into problems either with the site software or with the culture behind the scenes here, do not hesitate to get in touch, either by leaving a message on my "user talk" page or by email at ShoeHutch@gmail.com. Best regards, —Tim Davenport, Corvallis, OR /// Carrite (talk) 17:32, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. If a topic does not meet the General Notability Guideline, it is best not to start a piece on it at all. The deletion monsters will get it... Carrite (talk) 17:38, 2 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
