Kate Pullinger's Award[edit]

I tidied up the link to the award so it will go to the information section about the award. I'll give the reference a polish. There are templates when editing to format references. I find them very helpful!

Oh I really want to do that! I am gathering my articles! Right now, I am just pulling together all of the pages that need updating for electronic literature authors. I have been trying to figure out the adding references, but it is difficult to follow.

The easiest thing is to use the Cite tool in the toolbar when you're editing. At the top of the editing window you should see a Cite button. When you click that, you'll see another set of buttons. Click "Templates" and choose the source you're using (web, book, news, etc). Then it's just a matter of filling in the boxes and the reference will be formatted for you. THank you so much! I have just retired (July 30, 2022) and one thing I have always wanted to do is accurately portray women electronic literature writers. I am going through the major references and I have a spreadsheet going. I wanted to see the drafts so that I could build on them rather than starting from scratch!
So hmmm... I don't know who MoleculeMoleculeMolecule is, but I left a message on their page. Would it be ok if I just worked on their drafts in my effort? Or could I just see their drafts>

It looks as if you are going to be an important contributor with your interest in women electronic writers and your related wikiproject. You could also introduce WiR to your project by posting something about it on the WiR talk page. As a new contributor, I think you will find it useful to look at some of our Essays, especially our Primer. As for identifying women to be covered, you can browse through our Redlist index. I think it would be useful for you to pave the way forward on your project by creating your first biography. Oh thank you! I was hoping to start us all off a LOT smaller than a biography at first. There are 16 of us signed up so far for our monthly Third Thursday Task meetings, and we all have varying amounts of time to devote to this project. Some of us are university profs who will be explaining source citation, etc, using wikipedia tasks. We have a list of women to cover, our core members, our task list, etc. and I can email you that list. I am at clearlyconsistent AT gmail DOT com. I had hoped we could learn about wikidata, get our 400 women electronic literature writers into the wikidata first with as much info as we know, and then start identifying the women in red to turn to blue articles. This is the approach Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight, a Wikipedia Administrator, suggested.
I also requested all of the draft articles we know about back as they had been inactive, but I never heard back on that one--do you know who to follow up with for those drafts? (e.g., Ana Maria Uribe, Anastasia Salter)

Thanks LEL for responding so quickly and explaining your approach. I'm happy to hear you have been in touch with Rosiestep who is a real expert on women writers. If you feel you are not ready to embark on biographies, I have a few suggestions. I see you have been working on List of electronic literature authors, critics, and works. (BTW, if you search for List of electronic writers), you will now be redirected to it.) Using this list (and the similar Category:Electronic literature writers), you could pick out some of the women's biographies which need extra work, such as Lynda Clark (author), Kathleen McConnell, Cathy Marshall (hypertext developer), Allison Parrish and Sarah Smith (writer). On the basis of how information has been included in biographies in the list already rated C Class or higher on their talk pages, you should be able to make improvements by adding more details backed by referencing from good secondary sources. You might also be interested in working on some of the women's biographies under Category:Interactive fiction writers. Sooner or later, I think you should put together a List of electronic women writers, not just as a list of names but with basic information such as date of birth, nationality and specific interests along the lines of List of women cookbook writers or the lists under Category:Lists of women writers by nationality. As for Wikidata, I see we have electronic literature writer (Q113663593) in which all electronic writers on the EN wiki should be included. If you turn up Annie Abrahams and click on :WEF Person in the LH margin under Wikidata Edit, you will see details of her Wikidata person data. If you click on Profession, you will see that one of the occupations is electronic literature writer. If you follow the same procedure for Mabel Addis, you will see that ELW is not included. It can be added by clicking on + to the left of occuptation. I'm afraid I am not an expert at creating new Wikidata entries as I always use the method just explained to add an entry in connection with a biography I have just created. In my opinion, trying to tackle Wikidata for new entries is not likely to encourage people to edit on Wikipedia. I'm not sure whether these are the kinds of task you are interested in. If not, please let me know more about what you would like to do to gain experience. If ever you do get around to starting a new biography, I would be happy to help you along. In connection with the above, we now have a List of women electronic writers. It is based on those who are already covered by biographies in the English Wikipedia but could be extended to those in other language versions and those supported by good secondary sources. Perhaps you and your colleagues could check it through for accuracy. I think most of our other 300+ women electronic literature writers do not have published articles. We are working on developing those articles in a shared google doc so that we can ensure accurate and objective information as we get articles going. We anticipate that this will take a few years. LoveElectronicLiterature: For a project of this type, it is quite reasonable to suppose it will take a few years to incorporate some 300 biographies. It would nevertheless be useful if you could keep us informed of some of those who seem to be backed by sufficient sources at the moment. Adding one or two new biographies a month would keep things moving. For me, Google docs is not ideal as I am not a member of Google. Why not begin to develop a redlist as part of your project. This is the way most wikiprojects have managed to encourage support. We can then also use appropriate wiki tools to investigate redlinked names. Initially, you could for example aim at including ten significant names a month. I see by the way that there is already a list of potentially interesting names at the draft Lskains is preparing on New Media Writing Prize. Ok, Lskains is part of our project and she just did that draft article this week. What wiki tools should we use to upload the names we have on our spreadsheet into wikidata so far? We do not have the birth, death, works done yet. Just the names. Maybe it would be easier to upload all of those names into wikidata as red links and then add the property info as we get it? I've been going through wikidata and I just don't get how to put in the new articles. Will I need to search each name and then add to wikidata? I tried to add Agnieszka Przybyszewska, but I did not see where to add her language (Polish) or her statements? LoveElectronicLiterature: As I said earlier, I really do not think Wikidata is the best place to start. It's not easy to edit unless the person involved already has an article in which case you can use the gadget. I cannot advise you how to add info on Agnieszka Przybyszewska unless you first start an article. Our Wikidata expert Tagishsimon may be able to help. I have nevertheless made a quick search on her name and see she is still an assistant professor. That might be a problem for the acceptance of her biography unless her work is supported by awards or critical assessments. What I would suggest is that you start your own crowd-sourced list in the format used by Wikipedia:WikiProject Women writers/Missing articles. You could for example call it Wikipedia:WikiProject Women writers/Women electronic literature writers/Missing articles. You could list Agnieszka Przybyszewska with a reference to elmcip. Others might then be able to add other useful sources, date and place of birth, etc. If you could start a list of ten or so, the rest of us could no doubt add to it. One we have a red-listed name, we can then carry out searches to see if the person is mentioned in existing articles, in other language versions of Wikipedia, or in reliable sources such as JSTOR. For the project meeting on 15 September[edit]

LoveElectronicLiterature: Your colleagues might be interested to know that we now have a List of women electronic writers which includes a few new names. It would be useful if the list could be checked for accuracy. If you do not want to edit it yourselves, just let me know what needs to be changed. One of my problems in expanding the list is that I do not know to what extent women involved in digital art and digital games should be added to the list. I've listed some candidates for inclusion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women writers/Women electronic literature writers. Please let me know if they are suitable or not.

I would also very much like to have access to your list of 400 women in electronic literature. Ideally it should be made available as a project page but if not a web link would be useful. It would also be good to try to develop a shorter list based on names with links to at least three reliable independent sources, especially critical assessments, background on awards, or coverage in the press. On this basis, some of us would no doubt be able to start creating more biographies or at least providing feedback on what else is required.

We have an odd difficulty at the moment--we want to upload images of screenshots from works. But these images need to be uploaded by the original author of the work so that we follow all creative commons, copyright issues, right? So if the author uploads her own work and says it is ok to use as a creative commons image then is it ok for one of the other editors (not the original author) to upload that image to the notable person's page or to wikidata? Thanks for these details. I'm afraid I cannot access your lists. Perhaps you need to be a member of Google to do so. If you need help with your lists, it would be far better to develop them on Wikipedia, possibly in connection with your project. Names should be supported by at least one good independent secondary source (ideally three).
I'm not very familiar with all the copyright procedures on Commons but there should certainly be no problems if the creator of the image uploads it. If someone else does it on their behalf, then I believe the creator is required to confirm to Commons that the image is in an appropriate Creative Commons category. See also Commons Licensing. Yep, we are getting image creators and writers to upload their materials. This will be a long-term effort. I did try to add two people to wikidata, but bovlb took them down as not being noteworthy, so I have to write their biographies before doing anything with wikidata as well. In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. Progress on electronic literature[edit]

First of all, I'm glad to see you are active once again, Deena, and have arranged a zoom meeting on on the 22nd. That should indeed prove useful in drawing attention to the new wikiproject. It's good to see you have added a link to the digitally accessible Electronic Literature Collection on Electronic literature. Thanks to the efforts of Lijil, the article has now been promoted to GA. One of the suggestions I have for the evolving wp:Elit page is to include a fairly short list (say up to 20 items) of deserving authors (both men and women) and titles of works which deserve articles. It would help (but not essential) if up to three reliable secondary sources could be included for each item to help contributors along. But if you and your colleagues can provide suggestions, I can look for sources. I know there are many, many more which could be included but if we can post a fairly short list (which can be updated from time to time) those participating in the project will have something concrete to work on. References should be included where necessary, just as you have been using them up to now. It is nevertheless important to make sure that every paragraph has at least one reference. Reviewers often tag articles if they discover there are paragraphs without citations. If they are included at the end of a paragraph they are easy to identify. I had hoped you would follow up with my request for more citations over the following hours but that has not been the case. As a result, I have had to draw attention to the missing citations in the hope that they will be added soon. I see that Jo-Anne Green has also faced problems by including her CV on her user page. It would therefore be useful to sort things out as soon as possible, perhaps with her assistance.   • In connection with this and your comments on the draft's talk page, LEL, I've tidied up your Metagaming draft and moved it to Metagaming (book). Please check it through carefully and make sure my edits have not brought about any unintented changes in meaning. As for your three drafts which have not been found sufficiently notable, I think the problem may have something to do with the way they are presented. I'm rather busy at the moment but if you could send me links to the drafts, I might be able to bring them up to standard over the next week or two. I think part of the problem is a result of including primary links in the lead. In future, rather than submitting drafts to AfC I suggest you let me know when you have completed a draft biography. @Ipigottsorry, I have been swamped on work deadlines. But yes, I do want to get back to these. The last wikipedia athon was working in Indian languages. We are focusing for a moment on translating the electronic literature article into Hindi, etc. so that we can share notable developments in Indian Elit. But yes, I will ping you from now on!
