Hello JarrahTree,
Thank you for your kind welcome. I will continue to make contributions to pages and will follow Wikipedia tutorials to increase my knowledge on how to edit articles.
I hope my contributions help make information on threatened species more accessible to the general public.
Kind regards,
Lord.Of.The.Proterozoic Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 07:43, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, it is worth knowing that the IUCN status of low level has made at least one Australian biota editor despair - it is to a certain extent redundant to add status that is not yet of concern - the

issue is by no means a fatal error or anything, just worth noting. How do I know? A few years ago we were going to form an Australian biota user group, but we decided to let it go at that point. It is worth knowing that the low level least concern is considered a redundant item, so if you see someone edit in the area that you have, do not take it personally, there are no well written up guidelines about such issues - more a case of what is picked up over time. Please feel to contact over any issue, and thanks for editing. JarrahTree 08:08, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, sorry for this. I just thought I'd add the IUCN status of all recently assessed grevillea species, including those listed as Least Concern.
I have also added an image to a grevillea species article. I hope I am entering the Creative Commons details correctly, as this image licence was under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, which to my understanding, means it can be shared, as long as it is for non-commercial purposes and the original author is credited. If not, I will remove the image from the article. The article mentioned is Grevillea angustiloba.
Thank you for addressing your concern. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 08:29, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Grevillea species[edit]

Hello Lord.of.the.Proterozoic,

Thank you for your work.

Please slow down your edits to Grevillea articles. I know that you are a "newby" and are keen to make edits, but you are making mistakes that other editors have to stop work and fix. Perhaps you might go back and correct them yourself, starting with Grevillea sphacelata‎. 1. All IUCN references must be cited. 2. Binomials (including in references) must always be italiced (eg. Grevillea sphacelata‎ not Grevillea sphacelata‎). 3. You are not entering references for IUCN correctly. Nearly all now have the tag "One of more cite web templates have maintenance messages". I have corrected Grevillea divaricata for you. (3. The formatting changes you've made in taxoboxes, are not necessary.) Gderrin (talk) 23:11, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Gderrin.
Thank you for your feedback. You are correct, I do need to slow down a bit to ensure I am making edits correctly. Would you please provide me with a tutorial on how to properly cite IUCN references? Would this include citing the IUCN Red List status in the SpeciesBox, or just in the references page at the bottom of the article if there is no other written information (such as no mentions of a species being "Least Concern" in the article apart from in the Speciesbox?)
Thank you for your time. I will slow down and take more time to learn how to properly edit Wikipedia articles.
Many thanks,
Lord.Of.The.Proterozoic Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 23:42, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No drama! The clue is in the edit I've done to Grevillea divaricata. Your original edit did not include the publisher (The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species). If you are using "Cite" in the menu bar, don't forget to include the publisher.) This page provides all the information about citing sources, but the relevant part is here.
To include a citation for the IUCN status in the taxonbar, use "status_ref". I have made the change in the Grevillea divaricata article.
You can find all the edits that need correction in your "Contributions".
Feel free to ask on my Talk Page or include @Gderrin: so your question gets my attention. Gderrin (talk) 01:20, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much. I will be sure to include these details in my edits from now on and will go back and fix up my previous edits before contributing to any additional articles.
Thank you for your assistance. I hope you have a wonderful day. Cheers. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 01:24, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Gderrin,
I am trying to fix up my references by having the binomial species name in italics for my citations. However, it doesn't seem for work for me, even though I followed your instructions in the Grevillea divaricata article.
I tried doing it on the Grevillea anethifolia article, but it doesn't come up in the references as in italics. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Thank you for your help. I hope to hear back from you soon. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 03:49, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! You need to use two single quotes '' rather than a double quote " to italicize! Good luck! ChaotıċEnby(t · c) 04:00, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Chaotic Enby
I did that, yet for some reason, it still won't italicize. I must be doing something wrong. I'm still unsure of how to add a citation to the conservation status on the SpeciesBox as well. I should really follow some tutorials.
Thank you for your help. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 04:08, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, should've been clearer. It's two single quotes on each side. This result from ''this code'' ChaotıċEnby(t · c) 04:09, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see, it's now been properly italicized. Thank you very much. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 04:12, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! (Also the Proterozoic is pretty cool!) ChaotıċEnby(t · c) 04:18, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(It sure is!)
Also, one last thing, would you know how to a cite reference in the conservation status section in a SpeciesBox? I can't quite wrap my head around how to do it. It's alright if you don't know. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 04:29, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about this one sorry, but WP:WikiProject Animals might have someone who knows! ChaotıċEnby(t · c) 04:31, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I'll have a look at that when I can. Cheers. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 04:48, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your edit to those Grevillea pages - all looks good, including Grevillea anethifolia. If you want to cite a reference for conservation status in the taxobox, use status_ref (as in Grevillea divaricata).

If you get stuck again, feel free to ask. Happy to help. You'll get the hang of it soon. Gderrin (talk) 06:57, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, @Gderrin
I'm still not sure exactly how to cite the references for conservation status as I'm unsure of how it's done. Would you be able to teach me how to or provide a tutorial? As always, thanks a bunch. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 11:35, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Okay - first give your IUCN reference a name. I've done that in the last section of Grevillea acrobotrya. (Note, I've also corrected the IUCN reference. Use "publisher", not "website".) Then use "status_ref", followed by the reference, as I've done in the taxobox. I've done it slightly differently in Grevillea sericea. Gderrin (talk) 12:31, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, I've learned how to do it myself and will be in the process of doing it properly for all the articles I've edited and planned to edit.
Thank you for all your help, everyone. I hope you all have a wonderful day. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 12:13, 1 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Retrieving references[edit]

Hello, @Gderrin

I am contacting you in regards to a question I have involving the retrieval date of references. Since one article I have been editing has outdated and incorrect information, I have been accessing information from references already in the article (such as the one for Grevillea acropogon, where it has been found in two subpopulations rather than just from the type locality.)

I was wondering if because I accessed the references again at a much later date, do I change the retrieval date of the reference to the current date, or do I leave it as is?

Also, if the information in a reference is outdated, do I remove that reference and replace it with a reference with up to date information?

Thank you for your time, patience and support. I hope my edits are making a difference and helping make knowledge and education more accessible to the general public. I also hope to hear back from you soon.

Best regards,

Lord.Of.The.Proterozoic Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 09:26, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's time for you to access some of the information in help pages. I don't mind helping, but I think you are capable of finding stuff out for yourself, including in "Learn more about editing" at the top of this page. Click all of the links on that page. The first one takes you to be bold. If someone (including me) does not agree with your edit, they can change it. ("Do not be upset if your bold edits get reverted.") If you make a mistake, someone will correct it. As you get more experienced, read the Help Pages and Referencing for beginners. Later the Manual of Style. Again, I am willing to help, but I also have edits I am trying to find time to make. Gderrin (talk) 10:12, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I understand. From now on, I've been using the help pages to help me with my editing to help me get up on my own two feet and confidently make edits correctly. I've been experimenting on some things in my personal sandbox to help me get used to new editing formats and to practise before making edits to articles.
However, I still can't find any information on whether or not I change the retrieval date to the current date if I access the references again and made edits to the Wikipedia article based on new information in the reference. Lord.of.the.Proterozoic (talk) 01:25, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Whether or not you change the date is entirely up to you. Gderrin (talk) 06:18, 3 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
