Non-standard cosmologies

You might want to look at the comments I made with regard to non-standard cosmologies.

17:53, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

As you no doubt can tell by now, Roadrunner is one of the main characters that we must appease during the creation of the non-standard and/or plasma pages. While he has some good points and often makes good contributions, sometimes he will outright censor due to prejudice, with no hope of helping him realize the error. You may see a history of this by reading the entire plasma cosmology and non-standard discussion pages. Most of the arguments that have been presented are due to thinking produced by strict belief in the correctness of the Big Bang's foundations. -Ionized 20:45, Sep 3, 2004 (UTC)

Cosmology

Just interested, Jonathanischoice, have you much in the way of background in terms of cosmology?

Non taken

Thanks for your comment in my talk page. I hope my counter-rant was likewise taken in stride. Water is good, enjoy. TTLightningRod 13:08, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

As to the exiting Temple 1 experiment... After NASA itself, a large portion of my news and interpretation of Deep Impact has been provided by http://www.plasmacosmology.net/ A large number of people associate with, and collaborate on, content and reference linking there. Wiki's here on say Plasma Cosmology do not seem to adequately reflect the true amount of dialogue going on. This applies to a number of other non-mainstream approaches to electrical phenomenon proposed as playing a larger role running through all categories; physics, chemistry, biology... With this activity, there are always an additional number of unsettling people and ideas... like "Planet X", Velikovsky, and cultish Teslites or Richeans. Yet, IMHO, these are all still very much a part of the encyclopedia fabric, just as Greek Mythology, Native American folklore, even a long list of negative proofs supplied by tax funded NASA.
The contention and edit warring, are certainly no fun, but this (again, IMHO) is a reflection of the very difficult re-examination we are forced to go through when fundamentals like a Standard Model are brought under a microscope. I hope you stick with the efforts, and move in-stride with the Drama, or even a new understanding of how things work. TTLightningRod 13:36, 27 July 2005 (UTC)

Reply

Fortunately, between you and me, I've had contact with him before. As he says, he hardly has time to do his own work, let alone squabble in these kinds of anarchic forums. I also contacted a few other well known people, and hope to have a reply from at least one more of them. Yes, it is sad about the intransigent position of the others. On the other hand, it is quite understandable as the subject is a direct attack on their own paradigms, for which they have been working hard for years. I've never know individuals as myopic as this before, as nearly everyone else I've ever encountered will engage in a constructive dialogue. Ian. 18/Nov/05

And what are your thoughts on the Electric Universe model?

I note you're interested in plasma cosmology. EU is an extension of PC. Have you ever been to thunderbolts.info? If so, I'd like to hear your thoughts/impressions. If not, check out their picture of the day archive. You might find it of interest.

If you're already into EU as an extension of the Plasma Cosmology model, you might be interested to see the following article I just posted to Ian's User Talk:

http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/solarsystem/2005_dust_devil.html

It appears that some confirmation of EU model predictions is slowly takign place. Note the statement by researchers: ( The team believes they made the first Doppler LIDAR measurements of an invisible dust devil. "Some researchers think a dust devil may need dust to sustain itself, but here we recorded a very large one that was essentially free of dust for a substantial part of its lifetime," said Dr. Brent Bos of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. )

It appears that the prediction of collimated, electrically charged filaments as causation for dust devils, tornadoes, water spouts, land spouts is finally coming true. Specifically, the collimated filament is still visible via LIDAR for a substatial part of its lifetime despite there being no evidence of any flying dust particles.

IE traditional physics had it wrong. Dust machined into the air is not the cause of filamentation and longevity. Rather it appears to be an occasional effect of machining by the collimated filament. IE, theorists got cause and effect backwards. The electrical filament stands on its own without dust in the air. It causes (machines) dust to lift off the surface and swirl in a cyclonic fashion.

I'd expect these same measurements to be madec of pre- and post-tornadic system including landspouts and water spouts. Justmy 2c, but if you've seen any of the pictures of land spouts and water spouts, they're basically a giant cylindrical (collimated) structure with "stuff" swirling around it (IE, dirt, debris, water, whatever).

Cheers mate! Would enjoy some discussion from a truthseeker. :) Mgmirkin 21:29, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I tend to ignore EU on the whole as some of it is still highly speculative, but I keep an open mind on absolutely everything. Jon 01:34, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Baraka scanned at 8k.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Baraka scanned at 8k.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast (talk) 16:15, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

FYI--"Evidenced isn't a word"

You made what I thought was a fairly elegant edit on the Joseph Campbell article; in the edit summary, you noted that "evidenced" as a verb is not a word. I thought your edit was a very good one, but your note made me wonder. For what its worth, here's what the New Oxford American Dictionary says:

ev•i•dence verb [ trans. ] (usu. be evidenced) be or show evidence of : that it has been populated from prehistoric times is evidenced by the remains of Neolithic buildings.

Be that as it may, thanks for improving the page! David Kudler (talk) 20:48, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

File copyright problem with File:Cyclodina alani.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Cyclodina alani.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. ww2censor (talk) 05:50, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Responded to your comment ref Grapeseed Oil: I have to agree with you that there is a lot of ambiguity in this article, and comments to this effect have been going on for years without achieving anything... This is a pitifully short article as Grapeseed Oil is one of the most popular oils for use in massage and aromatherapy, and is a major ingredient in many cosmetic preparations. However, as often happens, the supposed benefits of ingesting this oil get mixed up with the benefits for external application. Then someone gets carried away with extolling the virtues of grapeseed extract that is a quite different product. The info under 'Potential Medical Benefits' is over-enthusiastic, but could be worse. But it is relevant in this article... I'll come back and re-write the article one day if I have time! Cjsunbird (talk) 16:22, 18 August 2010 (UTC) (Didn't know whether you had the page on Alert)

Replaceable fair use File:Baraka scanned at 8k.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Baraka scanned at 8k.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 12:40, 22 June 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for disputing the replacibility of non-free fair use File:Baraka scanned at 8k.jpg. Although, it would have been more helpful if you gave a logical reason. Basically, the image doesn't do much to illustrate the article, and it could easily be replaced with another picture of a film scanner. Last time I checked, film scanners still existed, so I don't think it would be difficult to get a picture of one. We don't need to use a screenshot from a documentary. By the way, neither myself nor Drilnoth are trolls, but thanks for the accusations. And for future reference, don't take things so personally and try to make logical points instead of ridiculous accusations unless you don't other users to take you seriously (including myself). –Dream out loud (talk) 00:50, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I agree, it was late, and I shouldn't have been so rude. The point is that this film was scanned at 8K, which is practically never done. The machine used to do it was built specifically for the purpose of scanning the Baraka 65mm print. This is a notable event in the history of digital cinema, and a picture of any old film scanner will not do. Also, there are no such images that I can find, outside the footage in the documentary. Jon (talk) 03:01, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Just to clarify; I don't want to get involved in this. I just left the notice here because, after I had uploaded a scaled-down version of the image per WP:NFCC, Twinkle thought that I was the creator and notified me of the deletion, rather than notiying the proper creator. I was just fixing the notification. –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 12:58, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on AuCNLKIN requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Amartyabag TALK2ME 07:03, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Ricebranoil.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted images or text borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Stefan2 (talk) 00:25, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Paracetamol

Hi, thanks for contributing to Paracetamol. Medicine-related articles have specific requirements as regards sources. In short, individual clinical studies are not deemed to offer authoritative information, and a mention in a secondary source (e.g., a review article) is necessary. To put it simply, there are plenty of ill-designed or ill-conducted studies and unless a study is reviewed and made noteworthy by being included in a review, it is risky to draw any conclusions from it. More at WP:MEDRS. That's why I decided to undo your edit. Regards, kashmiri TALK 11:06, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:20, 24 June 2018 (UTC)

NZ wine

I can help out a bit with the NZ wine article, I'm going to be travelling over the next few weeks but I'll see if I can put some time aside to help out. I have a fairly decent knowledge and interest in the subject. What did you have in mind? getting it up to GA status? — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here)(click me!) 11:25, 22 December 2018 (UTC)

That would be nice! I'm not exactly in a busting rush either, but I think at least it could do with some more updating. I've jotted some ideas on my todo list for example, and there might be some more ideas on the talk page. One thing I'd like opinion on (other than my own!) is whether some of the regions should have their own separate articles. Following the many articles for Australian wine regions, e.g. Barossa Valley (wine), which seem to have passed some sort of notability check, I wonder if at least Marlborough (wine) and Hawke's Bay (wine) should exist, if not all of them; there is already a Central Otago wine region article.—Jon (talk) 06:46, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
Oh, and if we do that, then I'd like to copy-cat a Template:Wine regions of New Zealand navbox template, modelled on Template:Wine regions of South Australia.—Jon (talk) 06:49, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
... which I just created :-) —Jon (talk) 07:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

File permission problem with File:Mahara-logo.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Mahara-logo.svg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. @Ronhjones: - Hi, I am attending a workshop today with WP:NZWPAL Giantflightlessbirds (talk · contribs) where the (non-existence of any) copyright on the logo will be resolved/clarified. Also, I created the screenshot image, and I'm pretty sure I tagged it appropriately? Please let me know if I'm missing something. Cheers, Jon (talk) 22:05, 3 April 2019 (UTC)
Hi Jon; while you hold the copyright for that screenshot, it contains typography, text, and graphics that are copyrighted to Mahara/Catalyst. If this was a standard software product, the copyright holder would need to release that image under an open licence. Since Mahara is released under a GNU GPL, adding the GPL template to the file, plus a link to Mahara's open source page, should be enough for people to verify that you're not violating any copyright by uploading a screenshot. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 06:28, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
@Giantflightlessbirds: great, but how is it that File:MoodleDashboard.png is fine? Is it because it's on Commons? Jon (talk) 21:52, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Mahara software dashboard.png

Thank you for uploading File:Mahara software dashboard.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:13, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Johnathanischoice. It's not really a requirement, but sometimes using {{Information}} on freely licensed files like this can help organize all of the pertinent info related to the file is a nice way which makes it easier for reviewers and bots to sort through. You don't have to complete each and every parameter of the template, but typically the more information you provide the better. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:26, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi Jonathanischoice, you can ignore this warning. I uploaded a freely licensed SVG version of Mahara's logo onto Wikimedia Commons (at File:Mahara logo.svg). Since we prefer freely licensed images over fair-use images, the original PNG logo is being replaced. The above message was automatic, and you don't need to do anything. Location for next Wellington Meetup

Kia ora, I'm letting all those that have attended during last few Wellington meet ups know that the location for the next two meet ups has changed. The location for the Wellington Meetup 17 August 2019 and Wellington Meetup 31 August 2019 is now in the Alexander Turnbull Library Reading Room, Level 1, National Library. The National Library net.work space area will be closed for building work from 12 August. See the meet up pages for more information. Looking forward to seeing you there. Orchestra Wellington

Hi, I'm a bit mystified why you removed the official and Facebook external links from the Orchestra Wellington page, and the fair-use logo from the infobox, without an explanation, and then added Orchestra Wellington to a "See also" section on the NZSO page? — Jon (talk) 01:47, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

(moved here ) the 'see also' was because each new article needs to be linked (not an orphan), as for the Facebook link Wikipedia:External_links (under links to avoid), thank you--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 01:55, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
@Ozzie10aaaa: - Hi, thanks for your reply regarding WP:EL. I read this before un-drafting this article, and under the links to avoided section, the Orchestra Wellington Facebook page qualifies as "a link to an official page of the article's subject", and under official links, it also meets the given criteria, namely that "the linked content is controlled by the subject" of the article and "the linked content primarily covers the area for which the subject of the article is notable" - i.e. communications with an increasingly Facebook-bound public about Orchestra Wellington's activities, concerts, tickets, seminars etc. I'm still not sure why you removed the fair-use logo or their official site. — Jon (talk) 02:30, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Peer review

Hello, Jonathan! I've only just noticed your NZ wine article on the list for PR and will be giving it my best attention over the next few days. I see from your user page that you are a classical music fan, and so I take the liberty of inviting you to look in at my current peer review: Charles Gounod. (If you aren't thus inclined, no matter! I shall certainly review the wine article regardless.) Best wishes, Tim riley talk 20:56, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

@Tim riley: thanks so much! It's great to finally hear from someone else, I was beginning to get used to the sound of crickets...! I will most certainly take a look at the Gounod article; I played bass trombone in Faust some years ago. I'm new to PR, what's the procedure, by the way? Do I leave suggestions on the discussion page, or just go ahead and improve the article, or both? Cheers, and Merry [Christmas / insert holiday here] — Jon (talk) 10:54, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

GOCE March newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here.

March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now!

Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist

Wellington Wiki Meetup

Just to let you know that the upcoming Wellington Wiki meeting will be on Saturday the 28th of March but will now be held virtually via the ZOOM platform. The meeting details can be found here. Hope to see you on the day! Ambrosia10 (talk) 19:37, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

@Ambrosia10: do we have to use Zoom? Can we try Jitsi instead? It works in a Chrome/Firefox browser, and is free, anonymous, encrypted, and unlimited. https://meet.jit.si/Jon (talk) 03:34, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Jonathanischoice, I'll be talking to Victoria about this. I think the reason we chose Zoom for the first virtual is because both Victoria and I are familiar with the platform and we haven't had a chance due to the changing and stressful circumstances recently to attempt to learn anything else. Feel free to also raise this with her. Ambrosia10 (talk) 06:21, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Jonathanischoice, I'm sorry that my pragmatic first stop solution of zoom has meant you don't feel like you can attend today's meeting. I've added a discussion point on the agenda about which video conferencing platform the group want to use. I encourage you to use zoom in for that part of today's meetup but I understand if you wish to maintain your philosophical position. Thank you for stating your views so clearly in the meet up page. If you don't feel like you can attend today's meet up to discuss this I'll be speaking on your behalf about jitsi.

GOCE June newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC.

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests.

Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.
