Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". See you at the drive! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Unreferenced stubs

I'm concerned that you are creating dozens of unreferenced stubs. Perhaps you could flesh them out a bit more before you continue? Per WP:CREATE, "The very first thing you should write in a new article is a list of the source(s) for the information in it." Toddst1 (talk) 19:24, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your concern. I was concerned myself when starting those articles; I will try to add a reference to them including some list of coordinates along with them. Jaguar (talk) 20:25, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
There was no need to take away my Autopatrolled status!? I'm trying to expand Wikipedia, why is taking away something going to help? Jaguar (talk) 20:28, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
I don't understand why you think having NPP look at the articles you are creating is a problem. If you're creating proper new articles, then they will be quickly patrolled. You're still free to expand wikipedia without hindrance.
However, blasting out 72 virtually empty articles in 6 minutes is not the way you should be going about it. You will now have the benefit of additional eyes on the articles you create. It's not a bad thing. Toddst1 (talk) 20:52, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
I agree, having Autopatrolled status gives us no authority or 'powers' apart from having a non lit bar on the new articles' page! Sorry if I caused an inconvience with the 72 Spanish articles, that was my only time I have done something like that. Other than that, most of my articles are very high quality - I created 2011 England riots and it appeared on the front page etc. However if I were to destroy all of the red links of List of villages in Spain, should I do exactly the same but add more references with them? Thanks, Jaguar (talk) 21:49, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
I think one ref should be sufficient. Toddst1 (talk) 22:30, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
No point in adding a reference just for the sake of it. Unless you add population or other data then a reference is redundant. The interwiki tag clearly shows that it is to be translated. UNless Jaguar can find a directory population list then it would not be efficient to start them like that. The most important thing is that missing articles from other wikipedias are started and when there are so many missing sometimes this is the easiest way to get English wikipedia working towards such content at all costs..♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:23, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
The population list is already there at List of municipalities in La Rioja. Some villages I created have over 3000 population so they are already notable. However all I need to do is to find a Spanish census reference for the articles and that would count as a reference for population amongst over things. Jaguar (talk) 16:31, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Autoreviewer

Have you considered applying for WP:Autoreviewer? If you're going to keep creating so many articles, then it might be helpful to the people who are trying to screen articles by inexperienced editors if yours weren't in the list. WhatamIdoing (talk) 22:48, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Somerset and Wiltshire's projects anniversaries

In response to your query about developing the stats table for WP:WILTS. For Somerset I've been keeping a monthly log for Somerset since it was created (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset/progress) and I just take the lines I want, but I know it is possible to get old data for the months you want from User:WP 1.0 bot as I've seen it done for another project - but I can't remember which one or how it was done & I can't find a guide to doing it. I would suggest Wikipedia talk:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index is the best place to ask for help.— Rod talk 19:16, 14 September 2011 (UTC)

Invitation

Hello!
Thanks for the invite. I haven't really considered joining any projects, as I don't feel I'm here often enough to contribute more than I am at present. And I wasn't really aware of this one 'til recently. But I'd like to drop in from time to time, if that's OK; and I'll continue to be interested in creating, expanding or tidying up Wiltshire articles as I come across them. I trust we can talk again... Serbian villages

Hi there, Jaguar. Might I ask what you're using to create these articles so quickly? — Joseph Fox 15:53, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Nothing but browser tabs. If you really want to know I have a draft at User:Jaguar/Sandbox/3 and I copy and paste that using {{subst:PAGENAME}} in the articles. I go to List of places in Serbia and click all of the red links and use the browser tabs to create articles. Don't worry about the references, I have already discussed this with a sysop and we both agreed I can create any number of articles as long as they have a suitable reference. Regards Jaguar (talk) 16:40, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

I wish you'd have created these with the proper districts categories, an infobox and population. The population figures are there on the list page for taking! It would have meant much less maintenance work at a later date for getting the initial basics down. Anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:54, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

No worries, actually I finished all of them aside from one or two odd ones as I wanted them to be consistent.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:15, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah it does make it easier when people come to add coordinates/population. The infobox in Gwebin here is what I generally use length-wise, although you'l have to find the timezone in advance. You can just add a subst:PAGENAME in the infobox name parameter too. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:30, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

You could next create stubs on List of township-level divisions of Hebei and the others. They list them like http://www.xzqh.org/html/he/01/ but you could just reference them to www.xzqh.org. I'll probably give you a hand.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:52, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

It would be a lot better if you would create these a bit slower, but with better info. Simply linking to the exact pages for these twonships, instead of the general list, is much more useful for anyone wanting to expand the articles later. E.g. Nanzhuang, Li County, Hebei could be linked to [1]. It would be a serious improvement if you could incorporate this into your articles. Fram (talk) 12:44, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
I could have sworn there was a link to the townships in the infobox, anyway; I removed the township link in the prose so it could be faster to create the articles but there is already a link in the article that directs you to the list of places in Hebei, so anyone could still find it despite the link being missing in the prose. Jaguar (talk) 13:17, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
Yes, but that is a lot more complex for someone like me who doesn't read Chinese. I have to copy the link to Google translate, find the correct page on the Google translated page, and then, when I click the link there, I get an access denied. If I have the correct link, I have to put that only once in Google translate, and I get the necessary info immediately (ignoring the problems with Google translate for the moment). You are writing for English speaking (or reading) persons here, so anything that makes their life easier is better, and in the case of non-English (and even non-Latin) sources, linking directly to the appropriate link is really a big improvement. Fram (talk) 13:25, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
If you have Google Chrome (which I'm not using at the moment) it can translate a whole page automatically so you wouldn't have to bother to use Google Translate. But are you saying that I have to look up an individual Chinese village and use www.xzqh.org for a reference? That would take a very long time. Jaguar (talk) 13:39, 27 October 2011 (UTC)
The name of every village you create from that page, is also an URL. It shouldn't be too hard to get the url at the same time as you get the name from that page, I think. Perhaps the good doctor (Blofeld) can give some advice? Fram (talk) 13:56, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Can you correct the ones you've started like this? The bold title only had 2 at the beginning not 3. Would be tough to locate the exact townships in the site but you could probably locate them at a later date doing a google search in the chinese name. I think its OK just to provide a link to the Hebei page on that site at least its in the right ball park. We'll obviously need Chinese speakers to expand them all. Also remember to update the date of the ref!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:04, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Emailed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:50, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Got it. I have replied. Jaguar (talk) 20:54, 28 October 2011 (UTC)

Can you change the date to 29 October not 18 August? Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:49, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

Ok, I have updated. Jaguar (talk) 13:53, 29 October 2011 (UTC)

Many thanks in advance for providing this essential feedback.

You are receiving this invitation because you have patrolled new pages. For more information, please see NPP Survey

Its been a few months since I put this up for review. Have you got the time to reach a consensus on it yet? Jaguar (talk) 16:06, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Sorry Jaguar, I have slowed down a bit recently. I am aware that I still have four GANs open, and I do wish to close them down one way or the other in the next week. I will take a look shortly and make a decision one way or the other. SilkTork ✔Tea time 16:14, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Stubs

You contributed to a recent discussion about an editor who was creating many stubs. The conclusion was that this was just a case of a prolific editor, with no violation of policy. There remains a question about whether very small stubs are useful, regardless of how they are created. You may want to contribute to the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Stub/Archive 15#Minimum size. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 19:35, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

I have commented but I fear that this discussion would put me and certain users at risk if we are needing to create articles. Jaguar (talk) 21:12, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your helpful comments in the FAC. Much appreciated. Jezhotwells (talk) 18:31, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

It was fun reviewing both the GA and FA. Jaguar (talk) 16:07, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Somerton is not likely to be one of the best Good Articles on Wikipedia, but it can be a Good Article if you deal with the remaining issues. It can be easier to get a minor topic listed as a Good Article as there is less to write about, and fewer sources to read, but there can be the difficulty of finding something interesting to say, and of finding enough material to use in the article! Each topic brings its own problems! I can see you are having problems with things like the climate. Just bear in mind that if there is little or nothing to say, then say little or nothing - don't try to pad it out. Climate is really not important, and not having a climate section on a small town in England would not hold it back from being listed as a Good Article. I have made suggestions for what you can do. As the work needed is minor, and this GAN has gone on for over a month, I have put a 48 hour limit on doing the improvements. At the end of that time I will close the GAN one way or the other.

If this does get listed as a Good Article, would it be your first? SilkTork ✔Tea time 00:58, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your helpful comments on the review. I will look at the comments straight away and address them, it has been very hard getting Somerton to GA and it is especially worth it. Since you reviewed Portsmouth last year I have worked on getting Cheddar and Nailsea to getting GA status, with lots of help. They are my only two successful GAs I have brought up out of six! Bentworth has failed three times in a row - I'm looking to build that up to GA as I've been trying to two years but it doesn't bother me any more.
Concerning the climate section, I will be willing to remove it as it is not important and it would just put some more strain on Somerton. Do you think I can remove it? Regards Jaguar (talk) 16:09, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

Well done. SilkTork ✔Tea time 11:29, 10 November 2011 (UTC)
