The Pines GA review[edit]

Thanks for your review on White Pines Forest State Park, I appreciated the speediness the review was completed with. About the red links, the only one I am unsure about is the poet, the others need articles. IvoShandor 11:48, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A few questions...[edit]

When editing an article or a page, is there some shorthand I can use to differentiate between reasons I edited a page? Are edits to talk pages minor or major edits? Also, should I always post notices of edits on an article's talk page? And, lastly, I'm confused regarding userboxes: Do I have to ask permission individually for every single userbox I use? I'm having trouble even implementing some userboxes because those with slashes (User/Userboxes/Userbox) won't work.

Thanks,

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive

WikiProject AFC is holding a one month long assessment drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from July 15, 2007 – August 15, 2007.

Awards to be won range from delicacies such as the WikiCookie to barnstars.
There is a backlog of more than one year, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

This drive was organized by GrooveDog in an attempt to terminate that nasty backlog.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Landlubber, by Rambutan (talk · contribs), another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Landlubber fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Landlubber, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to leave a message on the bot operator's talk page if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 12:42, 14 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

AfD nomination of Landlubber[edit]

Landlubber, an article you created, has been nominated for deletion. We appreciate your contributions. However, an editor does not feel that Landlubber satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Landlubber and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Landlubber during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Rambutan (talk) 07:33, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lucerne on Fernberg[edit]

G'day Hdt83

Thanks for your support in "reviewing" the new entry for our heritage property "Lucerne on Fernberg", it is much appreciated.

I acquired Lucerne about two years ago and continue to attempt to restore it to its former glory. The self-imposed deadline is August 2009 - the 150th anniversary of the property. In the context of world history that may not seem "old"; however, in terms of white settlement in Australia it is quite significant.

Regretably, it is easily forgotten as high rise city developments create concrete jungles that see unique urban character eroded. I am probably "odd", being keen to preserve and promote Lucerne.

As a new user to Wikipedia, I have few ideas about categorisation or listing but I do appreciate your support. Thank you again.

My RfA[edit]

Thank you for your support in my unsuccessful RfA. I appreciate the trust you and the WP community have in me; however, this time around things just didn't work out. TomStar81 (Talk) 21:47, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am Martyn Dias, AKA Elvis Shmelvis. I was doing a search on my name (as I do sometimes) and noticed a Wikipedia entry with my info. I was dissapointed when the info was declined. How can I get this accepted and therefore a page on Wikipedia?

Please reply to <e-mail removed for privacy> as I don't have a Wikipedia chat page.

many thanks

if you want to have a page on Wikipedia, you need to be notable enough. See WP:BIO for more info. Basically you need lots of sources (like news reports, etc) in order for a page on Wikipedia to be created. --Hdt83 Chat 18:54, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on "delete" for XYplorer from a new user here...[edit]

As a loyal user of XYplorer, but a newbie at WikiPedia, I was disappointed to see that it had been removed here. I was reading the reasons why, and found your comment "without reputable sources, software is not notable".

While I agree that XYplorer (XY for short) doesn't get a lot of big name press, that shouldn't mean that it isn't notable.

The two best known sources that have commented on XY are Gizmo Richards who has the well respected 'Tech Support Alert' newsletter which mentions XY in the following category, Best 46 Free Utilities and Fred Langa who wrote the well known LangaList and who took my submission regarding XY and published it, but then making some negative comments that were based on incorrect assumptions by him. Langa List jan 2006

XY is one of those pieces of software that isn't created by a big company with a big advertising budget or staff, but one author working with a group of dedicated power users like myself to solve problems that other more expensive software doesn't.

I personally was pointed to XY by a posting on a web forum where I asked if there was any software to solve the problem I had, so it's places like that where XY gets its users.."word of mouth". And part of reason that there may not have been many users editing the XY page here was that we saw no reason to do so, as it was correct and accurate.

As someone who obviously works with Wikipedia often, I would appreciate your understanding of how difficult it is to get major press coverage of a piece of software and thus see that other file manager products that are still listed here are SO obscure that we, as power users of various file manager products, have never heard of them!

Thank you (J Hallgren) (I don't have an ID here yet, or if I did, have misplaced it..sorry) 151.203.127.31 21:20, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately, the article was deleted because it wasn't notable. Without sources to establish notability than the article unfortunately cannot be on Wikipedia. You can try a deletion review but it will most likely end up as delete. Sorry about this but until XY becomes more well-known, it is not notable enough. If you feel that XY is notable, then you may rewrite an article that contains sources. Thanks. --Hdt83 Chat 08:28, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, but it is the article Comparison_of_file_managers which is, in effect, a formal review of these various products that is, IMO, incomplete without XY as an option, since there are other products currently there which are SO much more obscure than XY and less well known. So omitting XY makes that chart less valuable to readers of that article, and if XY was documented there, having at least a stub article that provides the minimal information about XY, would seem appropriate. That would satisfy the needs of both WP and us XY users.

To clarify a point: Is it because XY has not recieved attention/mention from major print media, such as PC World, or similar, that really thus causes it to be non-notable? If so, then I would suggest a number of products there would fail to meet the same criteria. Note that XY was mentioned by that free/paid web newsletter (Issue 133 Item 6.1 ) which describes itself as having 130K+ subscribers, and is on their site via link listed above. That would seem to make the product well-known. BTW, the LangaList newsletter which also mentioned XY describes itself as having 150K+ subscribers.

Also, using xplorer2 as an example: It has received much more press, yet on the download site Softpedia, XY currently shows 2674 downloads compared to x2 at 4724, so for an "unknown" product, it seems to be quite popular and well known. 151.203.127.31 14:14, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes since XYplorer does not have many reviews or sources, it is not notable enough. Many of the file managers in that list are also failing notability and they may also have to be put up for deletion. I am sorry that this article cannot be on Wikipedia but once XY becomes more popular, its bound to become more notable and thus an article may be created later on. I hope that this helps and thank you for your comments. --Hdt83 Chat 19:16, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the confirmation that other products might also now fail to meet the needed criteria, as that would thus eliminate the chance that someone possibly had a vendetta against XY in favor of another product which they have an interest in. A fair and level playing field is all that we desire, so that we may attempt to get the needed publicity.

And also, is there a specific number of times that XY would need to be reviewed or mentioned in sources, and must they be actual print or is web published content counted as less valuable? The notability criteria description as I read it doesn't give these answers in detail needed.

BTW, the list/chart/table of the various features of these products would, IMHO, still be of great value even if the product name did not lead/link to an article, as one could always Google that name to find it. 151.203.127.31 00:21, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One more minor problem[edit]

Hello! I hope you are feeling great. There is one more minor problem to deal with regarding the {{AfricaProject}} template. The importance=NA is missing from the template. Comparing this with the {{Football}} template, I believe that this needs to be fixed to achieve greater consistency. Your help in this would be much appreciated. In the meantime, is it possible that you can teach me in how to deal with this issue? It is because there are also quite a number of other templates which are not yet complete and I would really like to fix them up. --Siva1979Talk to me 09:41, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like your edit was reverted [1]. Not every Wikiproject is the same and every one has different standards on what their templates and such should be like. Discussing changes with the project would be the proper way before making them. --Hdt83 Chat 00:44, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Articles for creation[edit]

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are one week in to the drive, and it's already going fantastic. Numerous days of backlogs have been tackled, with hundreds of articles having been reviewed. We do, however, have some news!

First off, a HUGE congratulations to everyone participating so far. I understand some members are inactive due to vacation, but we are still making great progress.

Secondly, make sure that before you go off and review old submissions, that you review all submissions for the present day, and the day before, so that we aren't actually making a bigger backlog, by letting submissions get archived while we're checking stuff from 2006.

Third, remember to update your running total, on the drive page. Honesty is the best policy, so if you lie about the number of articles you've reviewed, we'll all make angry faces while looking at your userpage.

And, last, if you have any questions about the drive, feel free to ask me, or any other members of the project.

Great job, everyone! We're going to get that backlog!

Attaching my image to my Wikipedia entry[edit]

Hi. I can't figure out for the life of me how to attach my photo of myself to my Wikipedia entry. My entry is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandler_Burr and I uploaded my image, which I took myself. I renamed it like a good boy 04:20, 31 July 2007 (hist) (diff) Image:Chandler Burr in 2005.jpg (top) but how in the world do I put it on the top right of my entry/page? My friend Jhumpa Lahiri has an image on the top right of her page (I think someone else put it up there), but I can't figure out how they did it. One thing: You say "I'll respond to you on your talk page." That's the "my talk" link up on top right just to the left of "my preferences," right? I'll check back there tomorrow and the next day and hope I'm doing this right. Thanks, Chandler

Thanks for answering. I suppoted now, I generally just ask that to ensure the protection was valid, and wasn't anon-bashing...which certainly wasn't the case here. Adam Hughes[edit]

Regarding the Adam Hughes article, I would say that the proper course of action would be to wait until more information comes out about him in the coming days until it is deleted. It seems that it may be a subject of notability, but there is not enough information out yet. --JelloSheriffBob

The notability tag does seem more appropriate, thank you. I will do my best to gather the proper references as they are made available. If they do not become available in the next week or so, I would agree with your deletion request. -- JelloSheriffBob
