Annie Oakley[edit]

You added a cleanup tag with the following message in your edit summary: "((cleanup tag code)) requires cleanup. Text sounds like personal essay, some unrefrenced statements, random text, and possible copyright vio)"
You will need to provide examples or evidence for each of these statements. We can discuss them point by point and make improvements if necessary. If you cannot do so, then I will remove the cleanup tag, as the text has been extensively vetted over the previous year. That's not to say the article can't be improved, but what's needed is detailed paper library research. You will find a tool to do this at the top of the talk page, but it takes a lot of time to use it.
Every non-controversial article has some unreferenced statements. Note that Annie Oakley has 12 references, which is good, considering that nearly every major biography of her in the library, on TV, or on the web is wrong in important ways.
Because many elementary and middle school students are attracted to this article though their history textbooks, it suffers from frequent kiddy vandalism, so there is some random text added and deleted every week. Other vandalism has taken the form of false statements that are hard to discern from facts, such as the statement about "small injuries". Other editors also doubt this statement, and as the requested citation has not been provided by the original editor, it's probably time to remove it.
Many high school students do not understand the difference between plagiarism, copyvio, or how to judge what is a normal similarity to other articles, since there is only one set of facts. (Reply here please, I'll watch your talk page.) Milo 08:37, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of rollback[edit]

Hello Hdt83. Please do not roll back good-faith edits without explanation, as you did to an edit of mine. This is very rude, as it implies that the edit is so blatantly bad that no explanation is required to revert it. Although you provided an explanation elsewhere, it would have been courteous to link to this from the edit summary (for example, "revert, please see discussion"); it is not difficult to copy and paste an edit summary. For more information, please see Help:Reverting#Rollback. Thanks. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:18:37, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Warnings[edit]

I'd like to discourage you from over-using the "only warning you will receive" vandalism warning [1]. It's not really fair to new users and it's difficult for administrators who would like to warn the user properly and only then block them if you do that. So generally it's best to stick to the warnings as outlined at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace and escalate when necessary. Cheers. Dina 19:48, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I have changed this image from being licensed under the GFDL to being licensed under {{cc-by-sa-2.5}}. Of the two pictures you created this image from, one is in the public domian, allowing for any use and letting derivative works be put under any license. The other, Image:Stop x nuvola.svg, is cc-by-sa-2.5, and one of the conditions of cc-by-sa-2.5 is that any derivative works (such as your image) must be released under cc-by-sa-2.5, so you can't release it under GFDL. I'm afraid if you disagree with the license change the image must be deleted. Please respond to this message telling me whether the change is fine with you or whether I must delete the image. Deletion in Dip (food)[edit]

Can you be more specific? I corrected a grammatical inconsistency that didn't really change anything. I have made a number of grammatical corrections to articles as I come across them without any comment from anyone. Why was a change as innocuous as this one flagged?Schaddm 03:29, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dip (food)[edit]

I've looked again at the change I made. Originally it read

"Unlike other sauces, instead of applying the sauce to the food, the food is typically put into, or dipped, into the dipping sauce (hence the name)."

If you take another look, you will see that the second "into" is redundant because the "or dipped" is a parenthetical statement. So, if it is removed it becomes ". . .the food is typically put into into the dipping sauce. . ."

My solution was to remove the second "into" and add "in" to the parenthetical statement, which you objected to. Of course, it could be done another way by moving the comma located after "dipped" to after the second "into". Or, we could all agree the statement is a pretty weak attempt to sound encylopaedic and is really pretty nonsensical: how is putting the food into the dip not a form of "applying sauce to the food"?

I don't even remember why I went to the Dip page in the first place, but I would be happy to make these changes if you are now confident I am not making willy-nilly changes with no understanding of Common English grammar.

Might I suggest "Dip derives its name from the process of dipping a food product (typically a chip, cracker, savory biscuit or cut vegetable) into a prepared sauce or condiment as opposed to the application of the sauce or condiment by other means such as squirting, slathering, spreading, brushing or dabbing."

Now that's encylopaedic! Schaddm 03:56, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocking IP addresses[edit]

You are correct that Wikipedia won't normally block a shared IP address indefinitely. In the case you cited, however, all the contribs were vandalism. I saw no evidence that the IP was shared. If that turns out to be the case, people can either request that the block be lifted or register and sign in. Only anonymous editing was prohibited.

I am not an expert, so I could be all wrong. If so, then I have no problem with the block being lifted. I would much rather see a vandal turned into a constructive editor than to have them go away and not come back. ;^) wrp103 (Bill Pringle) (Talk) 02:00, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My article is called Article in construction, so AIC is the name i want people to beable to find it by. And i want to know where i can place links to it, for help with that question, please come here. and the only way to git there is to use History or find a way to copy the name right off the page and search using that copy. typing the name won't work, but if i paste it, it works.

Delection, again![edit]

Okey, Now my new Scientific Beliefs article is going to be delected. It's on AIC, so as such, it's incomplete. Really, it only has The structure laid out for the Wikipedian helpers to follow. Please try and put protections or something around AIC, so Wikipedia can't delete the articles because of being incomplete, because AIC is for new articles that are incomplete or anything like that, so that other users can edit, and help them with facts and structure! Please help.

Oh, and AIC has been renamed Wiki:Article in Construction, and i don't want that to be it's name, please help.

Why??? am I even provided a message saying I have an opportunity to make the changes if I am not going to be given the opportunity to change the pages?

If i'm getting what your saying, changes you made were gone, delected. if that is the case, it could be that Wiki believes your changes are vandelism, and if so, go to the article's talk page or Village pump.

As you suggested[edit]

Hello Hdt83,

Thank you for your offer to help me. I am looking to learn the basics...I have been playing with the sandbox some, but there are still some features I can't quite get a hang of:

1. How do I insert an image? Does it automatically place images along the right hand side?

I am trying to learn because we have just downloaded a wiki of our own for our website, and we'll just say it has been quite a shock compared to other software platforms (i.e. there is no backend for configuration) So interacting from an administrators role as well as a users role has been challenging at best...At least I can figure out how to get help on how to use it from the user end, the administrator side I am not quite sure where to turn.

Thanks for your help! --Captain B 21:09, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
