Strapless dress

That image of the 1932 strapless dress is incredible - and kinda blows out of the water the Life claim that it was invented in 1937/38.(which I was dubious about, but couldn't find anything to challenge it - a few claims that Portrait of Madame X's dress was strapless, (which it obviously isn't, even though the straps are token) but nothing immediately challenging that. Thanks so much for posting it! BTW, while I won't change it back, I thought the Gaultier image was pretty good as a lead image because it was very clearly focused on the dress, nothing else, no distracting wearer, the conical breasts weren't too obvious, just a clear shot of a strapless dress that, most importantly wasn't the picture of the practically topless dress that's on Wikimedia Commons here. I checked and was glad to see that the Gaultier dress appears on his article. I feel that that particular dress being strapless was incidental to the fact that it was cone-breasted. I'm not sure what you mean by obvious, but the vast majority of strapless dresses don't look like that. Outside of a runway, a burlesque show, or a Halloween party, that style of dress is fairly rare. Still, it's good to know that the 1932 photo is a welcome contribution, and I wish you luck with your DYK. Fashion is a weak topic for Wikipedia, and I'm glad to see that we finally have an article on the strapless dress. Gobōnobō + c 04:40, 23 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. Sandbox questions

Hello Gobonobo. I was working for the Education Program:Drake University/Global Youth Studies (Spring 2013) and could not figure out how to create a second sandbox. My first sandbox is already filled with a draft on Nueva canción for my Honors Thesis Project and I know it is possible to create a second but I found the process very confusing. Hi KLi 32. Your first sandbox is located at User:KLi 32/sandbox. You can create another in your user space at User:KLi 32/sandbox2 or User:KLi 32/Insert draft article name here. When you click through on the red linked title, it should give you a message that there isn't a user page with that name. Below the message, there's an option to start the page. Clicking that will bring you to an edit window for the new sandbox. Once you save that page, it will be up and running. Gobōnobō + c 19:25, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Why did you close this as "moot"? This is in no way moot; as I wrote in the discussion, the current revision is a baseball card, and that image thus violates WP:NFC#UUI §8. When the discussion started, the file name was used for a different baseball card, but overwriting it with a different baseball card didn't solve anything at all! Unless you revert your closure, this will have to go to WP:DRV. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:56, 20 April 2013 (UTC)

The image that was originally nominated for deletion at FFD was replaced and effectively deleted. As such, the deletion discussion for that image was rendered moot. My understanding is that if you would like to have a separate discussion for the deletion of the new image, you are welcome to open a new FFD for the new image. Your assertion that it was a different baseball card seems to be contrary to the evidence provided by B, who showed that the image was based on this photo, which is plainly not a baseball card. The link you provided does indeed, but that has no bearing on the status of the original image which the card was based on. Regardless, the discussion was closed based on the fact that a new image was uploaded to replace the original image, not on any determination having anything to do with baseball cards. A favor -Environmental law articles ready for preliminary review

Hi Gobonobo. I see that you're an online ambassador. I'm the Professor for Aaron Frank's environmental law class, and while you're not signed up for my course, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at any or all of the articles my students are working on. One of the aspects of this sort of course is that students understand that they are putting their work out before the wikipedia community for review. In the past, there hasn't been that much activity on their pages as they were working on them. I was hoping that if you get a chance you can take a look.

The students now have draft articles in mainspace and are starting to review each other's articles, and they could also use a preliminary review by an experienced Wikipedian in this area. If you get a chance, ideally sometime before Thursday or so, please take a look at the following list of articles and leave feedback on the talk page:

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round.
