Red Barn

Thanks. There is indeed a lot more that could be said, but I tried to keep it within the attention span of the average reader (which the collective wisdom of Wikipedia reckons is about 30K of prose). Curtis' book is a mine of information if you can get hold of a copy, but I think copies are as rare as hen's teeth (and you aren't having mine!) Yomanganitalk 19:33, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Benoy

I have moved your dial to a more appropriate spot MPOV. Uploading an image is time consuming but not Hard if you lift the text from a similar photo. It must be uploaded to Commons not english wiki.

  • Have three tabs open on your browser
    • In the first tab have these instructions
    • In the second tab, use this link [A sample photo].

Copy all the text in the box.

    • In the third tab, register and log in to commons at [Commons link]
    • Use upload file
    • tick the first option- a photo you took yourself
  • Browse to find the photo- and give it a sensible name in the second box
  • Now in the summary box- just 'paste' the text from the sample photo ove the stuff already there
    • now edit it to reflect the picture.
    • The category you want, will be Category:Suffolk, and Category:Sundials.

ie- change the description/date/ and author. leave the source and licensing untouched.

Don't worry about the licensing drop box- you have already pasted that in.

  • Upload

Everything except the filename can be changed at a later stage. I want to see this picture ClemRutter 22:49, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Edmund the Martyr

I sent it for GA. It could pass as is, but feel free to continue to add material. We knocked that out quickly! I am guessing you were intrested in Edmund due to his connection to Suffolk, but I would like to collaborate with you again. Have a look at my user page. Do you need help with anything I might be intrested in? Perhaps I could intrest you in Edward the Martyr? Best, -- SECisek 06:34, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Congrats, it is GA. -- SECisek 21:28, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

I have not looked at it yet, but we want to play this carefully and avoid an edit war. With the GA status now, consensus should be easily obtained against radical, idiotic, and fringe POV edits. I'll take a look at it later today. -- SECisek 11:10, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Try as I might, I got an edit war, anyway. The article is locked at the GA version for NPOV. Go put in you 2 cents in the discussion. Ah, the perils of recognition. BTW - my other 3 GAs passed, too. -- SECisek 02:36, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

I have almost had enough of ol' Ed, too. I hate to let the puppets grind me down, but two weeks ago I had four articles promoted to GA. Since then I have not really done anything other then defend Edmund. It seems other editors see what needs to be done and may pick up the mantle. We should probably both get away from Ed for a while. You are one of the good ones. - SECisek 16:35, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

dress photos

Hi Edmund, did you take the photos Image:Worthdress thumb.jpg and Image:Worth Dress view 2.jpg yourself? Thanks, Calliopejen1 22:34, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Sundials

I could do without all this unnecessary scrapping- but I feel that it is not over yet. So for relaxation I moved to the Commons link. This was not a wise move. By linking to the [[Category:Sundials]] you get links to all the other pages. I think the page Sundial is non-standard and all the images there should be recategorised. Then- I think we need some new cats such as Commons:Analemmatic sundials, Declining Dials... then the new cats need to be added to all the existing.... . Furthermore, now we no longer have the Sundial Primer link, the mathematics on the w:Sundial page looks week and doesn't stand scrutiny. But I do know a useful website where I can find all the information. ClemRutter 17:45, 17 September 2007 (UTC) Just read your second message. You do see what I mean. ClemRutter 17:45, 17 September 2007 (UTC) Yes the images look useful- if you do the transfer I will sort out the German though it would be easier if they were in svg format. I was thinking that we need a page dedicated to the Mathematics of Sundials and these diagrams have done a lot of the work.ClemRutter 22:03, 27 September 2007 (UTC) Reply coming on my talk page. Query

Dear Sir, Why, if you consider the use of singular 'they' to be substandard English, do you carry a box under 'other me' saying that you are a creature of habit 'but wouldn't like to think THEY were?' We think thee inconsistent. Kretzsch 17:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for reply. The area of endeavour you mention is (in here, at least) definitely a madhouse, best avoided. I ceased to contribute in that field in July and have not looked at any of those pages since. The period of my contributions there is shown on the userpage. May I suggest (a) Estonian or Balkan politics or (b) J R R Tolkein as areas governed by comparatively sensible editors, by contrast? Looking forward to hearing the Essex pov, Kretzsch 17:49, 27 September 2007 (UTC)
Well mind the gnomons don't follow you there Kretzsch 18:16, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

image copying

copy from help page for future ref; try as I might I cannot find instructions for the following. I wish to import from [[21] some of the images concerning the maths of sundials. I plan to put into my sandbox try and convert to svg. and start translations and finally upload to Commons. Is there a correct order in doing this and will the license travel across with it. Sorry people lots of questions in one. Thanks Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 17:42, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

There should be no problem here. German Wikipedia images are almost always "free" licensed. All the ones in the Gnomon article which I checked were licensed under the GFDL. Any of those will be fine for what you are planning, so long as you keep the same license(s) for the new versions you upload on Wikimedia Commons. You should include a link to the original source of the image and a note to say that you modified and/or translated that image. Other than that there are no hoops to jump through. Vita in motu

The text on Image:Houghton Hall Norfolk UK 4-face sundial.jpg seems to me to be vita in motu, Latin for "life in motion". - Smerdis of Tlön 17:19, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

The portal is ready for use now (although the portal itself never had a mistake). Now, you have to create an article for Featured article December.--Thw1309 (talk) 22:22, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I found the original article. Everything ok now.--Thw1309 (talk) 22:43, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

Your note

Thanks for the note. I'm pretty happy with the index, but I do like getting feedback that it's actually helpful. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:53, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

{{helpme}}

my my, not sure what has happened, I did the following: registry clean resized partitions and cleaned up start menu on windows XP Pro. (Well it feels like Spring here) Now wiki is like a page from windows 93 or something, layout font size etc all changed to very basic. I cannot find anything obvious help please. Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 17:35, 27 February 2008 (UTC) sorry people missed that in IE it is fine, in Firefox it is not and I do prefer firefox by a long chalk. Edmund Patrick ( confer work) 17:40, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

and it is only wikipedia so is it something from wikipedia, google et al show fine.
It's possible you have a bad cached stylesheet. Try bypassing your cache (Control-F5) on Firefox to ask for a new stylesheet. Let me know if it worked! --ais523 17:53, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Hey, I have some sensitive stuff to discuss with you off-wiki. You don't have an email address activated. If you're inclined and if you'd be so kind, email me through Wikipedia and I'll discuss matters with you. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:11, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
