unify formatting per MoS

Hi, I see you have been changing access and archive dates from YYYY-MM-DD to Daynumber Monthname Year to "unify formatting per MoS". Actually MOS:DATEUNIFY says "Access and archive dates in references should be in either the reference format, or YYYY-MM-DD". I'm writing to suggest that you leave the YYYY-MM-DD format untouched in future, where it appears in a citation's accessdate or archivedate parameter. The reasoning is pretty obvious: YYYY-MM-DD is a permitted format, more compact than any other, that clearly distinguishes access and archive dates (which don't need to be recognized at a glance) from the source date, which does. Here are some examples:

• Cite web: Kamco (12 July 2005). "Kamco Media Release". Department of Infrastructure. Archived from the original (PDF) on 2011-03-05.
• Cite news: "Locked into myki, public is owed answers". The Sydney Morning Herald. 25 February 2010. Retrieved 2011-03-18.
• Cite book: Walford, Geoffrey (1986). Life in Public Schools. Taylor & Francis. p. 202. ISBN 9780416371802. Retrieved 2009-02-02. {{cite book}}: More than one of |pages= and |page= specified (help)

I came across changes by your script to YYYY-MM-DD format in references (made back in February). The above comment expresses the problem with these edits quite well. I will add that MOS:NUM states:

In February 2006, the [Arbitration] Committee ruled, "Wikipedia does not mandate styles in many different areas; these include (but are not limited to) American vs. British spelling, date formats, and citation style. Where Wikipedia does not mandate a specific style, editors should not attempt to convert Wikipedia to their own preferred style, nor should they edit articles for the sole purpose of converting them to their preferred style, or removing examples of, or references to, styles which they dislike."

• For everyone concerned - some script fixes were done to the scripting after User:Pointillist's earlier report to avoid refactoring the ISO dates for access and archive. Now some references are simply poorly parameterised, and some articles have wildly inconsistent date formats. Therefore, as User:Ohconfucius pointed out, it would be better to indicate whether any of the most recent edits raise problems, and not the February edits under a less-refined script as User:Bcharles was concerned about. And User:Bcharles should be extremely careful about quoting MOS:DATE out of context, as there are other factors involved e.g. the 2005 ArbCom ruling supporting WP:STRONGNAT, strong consensus that formats within articles should be consistent (except for quotations, titles, and the somewhat contentious parallel tracks of prose and minor reference dates). A fair amount of manual review and tweaking is done with the scripts in any case (which is why the edit summaries normally declare "script-assisted". Bugs are bound to appear with the application of any script; even more bugs and omissions are bound to happen in manual editing. Further improvements to scripting can be expected; feedback for failures and functionality is welcome in any case. Dl2000 (talk) 18:45, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

Template:CanElec2Row and Rhinos

I saw that you were the creator of this template : I am having trouble figuring outhow to alter the templates to show the right party for Rhino candidates. Example; Vancouver Centre if you look at the 1988 results there was a Rhino candidate. But that was a different party than the one today. Right now all Rhino candidates link in templates to Rhinoceros Party of Canada (1963–1993), when the current candidates should be linked to Rhinoceros Party. I am curious as to why you removed the word "skilled" from the reference to the nursing home where this gentleman passed away. You label the reason as neutrality. • I would tend to agree that 'skilled' isn't necessary in that construction, and adds nothing to the biography. The implications of its use are that the establishment is particularly skilled compared with other nursing facilities, and/or that most others are 'unskilled'. Mercier

I find it curious that you have no problem with the unreferenced statement "Mercier is a common family name in France, and in French-speaking regions of Belgium, Canada and Switzerland" but take issue with my addition that the name has been brought elsewhere where French-speakers have settled. Why is the former acceptable as an unreferenced bit of information, and not the latter? The list of people below cites three Americans, two Brazilians, an Argentinean, two British people, an Irishman, and a Haitian. Is that not evidence that the name exists outside of the "core" Francosphere? I am reverting my edit back, because you are not offering a coherent explanation for its removal. I have reverted your edits for the lazy excuse of using Australian English. If you actually take the time to read and comprehend manual of style, you will see it states: "If an article has evolved using predominantly one format, the whole article should conform to it, unless there are reasons for changing it based on strong national ties to the topic". It continues "The date format chosen by the first major contributor in the early stages of an article should continue to be used, unless there is reason to change it based on strong national ties to the topic. Where an article has shown no clear sign of which format is used, the first person to insert a date is equivalent to "the first major contributor". So, what "strong national ties" does this article's subject matter (being a concert tour) have to do with Australia. Please explain to me, the background of Australian culture and history does this tour represent?. If you cannot, your edits will continue to be reverted and eventually you will be taken to ANI for disruptive editing, violating neutral point of view and ownership of the article. The subject of the article pertains to a concert tour, not the artist herself. Being born in Australia doesn't give you "strong national ties" to the country. I was born in Germany. So I guess, according to your logic, I have a strong national tie to the country. Even though I am a U.S. citizen and spent the last 30 of my 37 years living in this country. Kylie Minogue is the central subject in the entire series of articles, and the tour article could/should be viewed as a mere extension of the Kylie Minogue article or more proximally the 'Aphrodite' article. Concur the tour is an extension of the artist, and would seem obvious that it's about an international exporting of Australian culture. That tie seemed WP:COMMONSENSE. However, edit warring is hardly on my to-do list these days, and there's always other countervandalism to be done, so will defer this one to other editors for a bit. Hi there. Firstly, I'd just like to say how much I appreciate the work you do with date formatting. I mainly see you doing it to Australian rules footballers, but I've seen your edits all over the place and they're excellent. Just one small note, though. When adding the birth date and age template, check to see if they could realistically still be alive. If they are in Category:Year of death missing and were born in 1886, as was the case here, chances are they're not still alive. Thanks again for all your contributions. Could you please explain why the information I submitted is any less valid that the fact that Mr Hailes now drives a Taxi?? False positive

this edit was a false positive. Yes, the article is Australian but the edit was to a title field of a journal. The edit improperly changed the title of a work. Perhaps you could figure out a way to have the script not change title fields? --LauraHale (talk) 01:21, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Seems it didn't detect the "journal=" parameter properly although it generally keeps title= and work= parameters intact. Sometimes dates in such fields should actually be factored out to date= parameters. However, script is being adjusted for journal= to avoid similar false-pos in the future. Thx. I note that you have been inserting variants of the {{use British English}} templates, such as Australian. As my coding skills are at present limited to regexes, could you suggest ways in which my Engvar script can be adapted to handle these without replacing them outright? DI2000, it was with great disappointment that I found no flames when I clicked on that promising button overleaf; everyone likes a bonfire if they're just watching it from the sidelines. <sigh>

Concerning the British vs Australian template: as I understand it, there's only one difference in spelling between the two varieties: "programme" versus "program". Almost not worth worrying about, but Australians do object to the mme in AusEng (at least I do). Tony (talk) 15:07, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Some of the differences involved are wording-related, and not spelling-related e.g. WP:BANDENG or proper names such as Australian Labor Party - much of this lends itself more to human judgement than script or bot conformance. Therefore, the Engvar script would generally be similar for Aus and UK cases, except for the tagging. Will take a peek at User:Ohconfucius/script/EngvarB. Please don't change the format of dates, as you did to Henry Edwards (entomologist). As a general rule, if an article has evolved using predominantly one format, the dates should be left in the format they were originally written in, unless there are reasons for changing it based on strong national ties to the topic. Please also note that Wikipedia does not use ordinal suffixes (e.g., st, nd, th), articles, or leading zeros on dates.
