Hi Discospinster, you'd briefly interacted at the article a while back, and I'm seeking input--the article talk page may be the appropriate place, but sometimes topics can be ignored for months.

I'm dubious about the list of fallen officers, who are by definition non-notable. I'm similarly skeptical of the section on controversial actions, whose deletion I reverted. If they received passing coverage but resulted in no further legal findings, it seems like WP:UNDUE. I suspect these topics were debated/fought over in the past. Again, I'm not requesting resolution so much as initiating discussion. Your thoughts are appreciated. 2601:19E:4180:6D50:0:0:0:3F00 (talk) 20:06, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

I agree that the list of fallen officers can be deleted, since it's not a section that's found in other articles about police departments (at least in terms of listing the names). As for the controversial actions section, I think that might need some discussion on the talk page. ... discospinster talk 21:22, 20 January 2023 (UTC)
Thank you. I've commented there. The controversies can be better handled as prose, with abbreviated descriptions. As a table with relatively elaborate descriptions they appear designed to make a point. 2601:19E:4180:6D50:0:0:0:3F00 (talk) 21:39, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

Richard Davidson Reversions

Could you explain why you reverted the changes I made to Richard Davidson. I made the changes in good faith after reading the section and its references. Do you have any recollection of this May 2022 sock block?

I'm not seeing an SPI or a sockmaster. Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Ericallums2007/sandbox is underway and the question arose whether this was G5 qualified material. BusterD (talk) 23:50, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Your deletion of items from 'List of phobias'

(1) You deleted 'Sidonglobophobia' with the comment "remove entry sourced by pop psychology websites". One of those sources was Medical News Today, which our own article describes as "a web-based outlet for medical information and news, targeted at both the general public and physicians. ... the third most visited health site in the United States." (The article says nothing about "pop psychology".) On the talk page is mentioned, "most major newspapers, including the NYTimes, use it as a source." Sounds like an RS to me. Please revert your deletion.

(2) You deleted 'Spheksophobia' with the comment "there is no article for this". (a) Note the bluelink to the Wiktionary article. (b) Note the numerous other undeleted items in that list, either unlinked or redlinked. Having a Wikipedia article does not seem a prerequisite for listing there; that is a list of phobias, not a list of articles. As the lede says, "The following lists include words ending in -phobia, and include fears that have acquired names." Please revert this deletion of yours, too. I have reverted your deletion and wikilinked the item to the very brief Wikipedia article that DOES exist (Spheksophobia), rather than the Wiktionary definition. – Raven  .talk 16:16, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

This article is not meant to be a list of every wacky phobia that has ever been mentioned on a website somewhere (even if it's a very popular website). Hi!

I am a music critic and have deleted a chunk of the "Philadelphia" section, because it is hearsay, defamatory, states opinions not facts and basically not true. Thank you 176.88.214.155 (talk) 07:32, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

You cannot just delete an entire section of cited content because you think it's negative, malicious, etc. Wikipedia does include negative information about a subject if the reliable sources see fit to report about it. If there are parts of the article that you don't think need to be there, it would be better to take out what is not necessary or reliably sourced, and write on the article's talk page about why it should be removed. ... discospinster talk 19:31, 25 February 2023 (UTC)

I am concerned about the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_L2_(mtDNA) where 72.183.247.116 is adding false and unreliable statements today, vandalising many sections of it similarly to how User:Cece212 did in prior months. The History section had two things in it. One was a mention of Lewis and Clark, and the other was a fairly in-depth description of something that happened in one United States legislative session. As a reader, it was completely unexpected that either of these would be mentioned in the history of a bird genus. They both seemed oddly specific, out of place, and of very questionable use. Same goes for the New York Times quote ("On December 6, 2018 ... drilling, mining and other development."). If there had been other information in the section, I would have retained it, but there was not, so I deleted the whole section. 162.233.200.152 (talk) 00:27, 14 March 2023 (UTC)

Please explain what you mean by this post and why you didn't take any disagreement with my edits to me and not another contributor to the article. What do you think are my 'personal biases'? Can't you see that 'seemingly innocuous' is a statement of opinion and constitutes editorializing? You write in your recent edit summary restore reliably sourced content, keep your personal biases/political views out of editing (your insertion of "Jewish" has been removed multiple times -- I don't have any problem with you removing 'Jewish' from the description of the Anti-Defamation League -- I didn't know what they were, and I inserted the same description that is used in the lead section of that article. Slow edit warring, sockpuppetry, apparrent COI and possible paid editing at Ziya Öniş

Hi, I'd like to bring Demirhangiray aka Demirhangiray1001 to your administrative attention. I am reporting to you as you have already been involved - but please let me know if, because of that, I should use AN/I or a more appropriate board.

Demirhangiray's sole contributions have been to Ziya Öniş and you encountered them on 11 March, thrice removing their promotional content. I also came upon them at that time and did likewise, and as you can see from the edit history they have kept re-adding the text Overall, he is one of the leading social scientists in Turkey. He is not only a scholar with an international reputation, but also a highly acclaimed teacher. He is a social scientist with a broad range of interests. The underlying thrust of his work over the years has involved a deep commitment to democratic, egalitarian and sustainable development to the article, despite plentiful messages at User talk:Demirhangiray about neutrality, verifiability and edit warring.

Apart from the neutrality, verifiability and edit warring issues, they appear to be indulging in sockpuppetry and I suspect COI/Paid editing from their also posting the main picture on the article - their "own work", taken inside his university office.

I know this is a controversial topic, but if the series is available for an international audience to watch and the series being set in a premise where it is called football, i believe it would be better to use the term football instead of soccer. Also found this is wikipedia manual "Use universally accepted terms rather than those less widely distributed, especially in titles. For example, glasses is preferred to the national varieties spectacles (British English) and eyeglasses (American English); ten million is preferable to one crore (Indian English)." For a series that is watched internationally, and the wiki page visited by people all over the world, wouldnt it make sense to use the most widely accepted term. Thank you 111.92.31.108 (talk) 23:16, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

When it comes to varieties of English, the practice is to use the terminology from the country that the subject is associated with. So even thought the show is set in the UK, and has viewers from around the world, the origin of the program is the U.S., so "soccer" would be the term to use. Likewise in articles about Indian subjects (e.g. List of highest-grossing Kannada films), "crore" is acceptable. Where the subject is not associated to a particular country (e.g. Glasses), then the practice is to use the most common terminology. ... discospinster talk 18:21, 1 April 2023 (UTC)

Reverted Changes on Bharath Bopanna's Wiki Page without a reason?

Hello Discospinster, I noticed that the changes I made on the wiki page of Bharath Bopanna were recently reverted. I am writing to inquire about the reason for this action. I spent a considerable amount of time researching and updating the page with relevant and accurate information. I believe the changes I made were important in reflecting the current status and achievements of Mr. Bharath Bopanna. Therefore, I am curious to know the reason behind the revert. If there was any issue with the content I added or if there are any guidelines that I overlooked, I would appreciate it if you could share them with me. I am eager to make the necessary revisions to ensure the page is accurate and up-to-date. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing back from you soon. Khangar Community

Hello Discospinster,

I would like to address your recent revert of the edits made to the Khangar Community Wikipedia page. The content added was well-referenced and written in a neutral tone, adhering to Wikipedia's guidelines. Continuously reverting these changes without engaging in constructive dialogue on the talk page can be seen as a violation of Wikipedia's edit warring policy.

I strongly encourage you to participate in a discussion on the talk page, outlining your specific concerns and suggestions for improvement, rather than repeatedly reverting the changes. This approach is more productive and in line with Wikipedia's collaborative nature.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Gigablast is dead

Perhaps if you had bothered to read in the "Talk" page, down the bottom where it's hard to find, where I put some words about Gigablast's demise. I also mentioned I'd have to place an "in memoriam" in the article.

Not to mention the lunacy of searching for a source reference for a search engine probably unknown to 99% of internet surfers.

So, really nice of you to start a conversation over Gigablast's demise. You probably won't get a better feeling for quite some time now. 220.235.73.110 (talk) 16:55, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

Minor edit marker

Discospinster, I'm sure you already know all about the minor edit marker, but you've been using it for things that aren't minor edits like this one in particular. So I wanted to remind you to not overuse the minor edit marker.

Information icon Hi Discospinster! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. Mia Sinclair Jenness COI / socking / image copyvio

Hi, I don't think we've interacted directly before, but we both recently edited the Mia Sinclair Jenness article when someone (with a possible COI, see User talk:Crocandroll) tried to remove a somewhat old photo of the subject. Shorty after this person's two reverted attempts (and after I informed them regarding their possible COI and they replied to my message), another new user (UnderDaSea) added a copyrighted image from Getty Images claiming to be the owner (image has already been deleted by now) and removed the original image again. To me, it seems like that those two new users are obviously the same person (going by timing, user names and edit summaries) but I was wondering what action you'd take here, if any. Kindly, check and let me know, if there is something I have missed or if there is any error iadn my assessment. Thank you! MsAzra (talk) 15:22, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

If you are going to remove a large amount of content it would be better to discuss it on the article's talk page first, and refer to that discussion in the edit summary. ... discospinster talk 15:26, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

An entire section is usually considered a large or significant amount (as opposed to a couple of uncited sentences). Even if your edits are ultimately in line with policy, if it is not obvious what you have done and why, someone might challenge it. Therefore it's better to explain your intent on the talk page and direct the reader there, rather than assume they will know why you removed a big chunk of content. ... discospinster talk 19:14, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Statue of Edgerton Ryerson

Explanation of changes in Wikipedia: The Statue of Egerton Ryerson The History section lacked the key components of its history. Information on the commissioning and unveiling of the statue—uncontroversial—were added. The previous entry began History with 1970 and Graeme Gibson.

The section with unfounded accusations against Ryerson was deleted. Even the Standing Strong Task Force that recommended the removal of the statue (and the name change at Ryerson University) did not state that he was responsible for the residential school system. See the published sources on the point.

A section of published references was added, non-controversial: they exist.

A section, again factual, was added at the end that the Friends of Egerton Ryerson was formed and seeks to restore his reputation and have the statue placed somewhere suitable—again these are facts, not opinions. Friendsofegertonryerson (talk) 22:29, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

What?

I saw you reverted my edits on Royal Excel Mouscron that added 13 sources to the page, all reliable mainstream sources from Belgium, France and the UK. I updated that the final owner of the club was not the Latimer group but Gérard López, adding a source from the Guardian that you can read here [3]. For some reason, editing an infobox on Wikipedia always trips the vandalism switch and someone comes to undo everything, even if you add a source. Please, the vandalism "detector" is a robot, you are a human. If a robot says "possible vandalism", think for yourself and read the source. If Wikipedia doesn't like unregistered users contributing, it should lock them out, instead of letting them edit and undoing them for no reason. 81.78.16.166 (talk) 18:32, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Olympians; first para

Hi. You recently, in an article of an Olympian in a team sport, deleted the addition of the record of his team at the relevant Olympics. Saying it was not appropriate in the first paragraph. But that is where his participation in that Olympics was discussed. In fact there was no second paragraph (nor was one created by the revision). And his notability stems entirely from his participation in the games in question at the Olympics. I'm confused by your thinking. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D00B:9296:33DB:ECD3 (talk) 02:21, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

It's not relevant to the individual's article how many games the team lost. It's relevant to the team article if there is one. He's notable for being an Olympian, not for his team losing all their games. ... discospinster talk 02:23, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
First, you have not addressed my first comments. Please explain your edit summary. "not necessary in the first paragraph". I do not understand it as offering a reason for your deletion. You didn't move it to a (new) second paragraph. And of course - nothing on wikipedia is "necessary." Not even any article.
Second, his notability stems from his participation as a team member on a team that competed in the Olympics - not from anything else, at all. Which is why we mention his team's participation in the Olympics - and its performance is therefore highly notable. Wikipedia is full of articles on individuals in team sports reflecting their team's performance. If one were to go around the project deleting their team's performance from their individual articles, there would be quite the hue and cry of course. And if his team wins, he gets a gold medal. He, the individual. And we don't just reflect that in the team's article. Consider David Robinson. Wikipedia is full of examples. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:D00B:9296:33DB:ECD3 (talk) 02:27, 22 May 2023 (UTC)
I did address your comments explaining my edit summaries. Furthermore, where there is something notable about a team's performance and the individual's contribution to it, it would be cited, or talked about in the team's Wikipedia article. Losing games as a matter of course is not noteworthy to articles besides the one about the team. If you can find a reliable source that talks specifically about how Iraq lost all their games, then feel free to add it. ... discospinster talk 02:34, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

Kosta Mušicki

Would you delete some of their revisions [4][5] that clearly violates WP:BLP per WP:RD2. 112.204.206.165 (talk) 03:41, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure if those edits violate WP:BLP since the individual is no longer living, and it's not a particularly defamatory edit (just an addition of a wrong surname). ... discospinster talk 14:29, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
@Discospinster: This IP edit is considered vandalism and also related to Belgrade school shooting. --112.204.206.165 (talk) 07:35, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed you marked this page for deletion. If this particular page is worthy of deletion then please review all the other pages for all the subsequent and previous books in the series and mark them as well, so that I can strongly disagree with you and we can both waste weeks of time arguing about how wrong you are. thanks. No I'll just mark this one, and you are free to disagree on the deletion discussion page. ... discospinster talk 22:16, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
