Thank you very much for your effort, I will work on them all. Now I know how your Karnataka team is going from strength to strength. Spelling variations[edit]

Per our recent discussion on Talk:Hoysala architecture, here is a list of potential spelling inconsistencies in the first FA on your list Chalukya dynasty. I have attempted to eliminate variations which appear valid in the article's context, but may have missed one or more.

  • Ranaranga <-> Ranaraga
  • Vijayanaka <-> Vijayanka
  • Natyasastra <-> Natyashastra
  • Harithiputhras <-> Harithiputras
  • Satyashraya <-> Satyasraya (it's a bit hard to tell from context whether this is the same thing or not)
  • Vikramanakadeva <-> Vikramankadeva, and relatedly,
  • Vikramankadeva Charita <-> Vikramanakadevacharita <-> Vikramanakadevacharitam

Good luck in figuring out what needs to be changed to which. Michael Devore 23:47, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After all your hard work, only the Chalukya dynasty spelling list is left to do, so here is another list to choose as an alternate.

  • Rashtrakutas and Rastrakutas, similarly,
  • Rashtrakuta and Rastrakuta (empire)
  • Prathihara and Pratiharas
  • (Ibn) Khurdadba and Kurdadba
  • Rashtraudha and Rastraudha (dynasty) [second spelling is in a book title, so both might be correct for the article]
  • Kailasanath and Kailasanatha (Temple )
  • Arikeseri and Arikesari (can't tell if they should be the same, I think they are different people but possibly of the same lineage).
  • Begumra and Bagumra (one is in reference to plates, the other in reference to records, so this might be correct)
  • Torkhede and Tarkhede (inscriptions of Govinda III )

Not many on your FA list to check after this one. Michael Devore (talk) 01:19, 6 December 2007 (UTC

Western Chalukya architecture[edit]

If you are still interested in a copyeditor with experience bringing several articles to Featured and Good status, one editor I do know with that experience is User:Finetooth. I have seen him or her take the final copyedits on a FAC right up to the point of a passed review, making changes on the level of sentence structure and content (beyond the corrective style editing that I do, which is rather a different sort of thing). I don't know if Finetooth is busy or would look it over, but it couldn't hurt to ask at User_talk:Finetooth. I do see you have a request at the League of Copyeditors, but that can sometimes take a while and not sure if they all have professional-level experience (not that professional experience is necessarily required here). -- Michael Devore (talk) 15:26, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Western Chalukya architecture #2[edit]

Hello, I did a modest rework of your first paragraph to make it read better (to me), while keeping your original sentence content to match the references. I didn't know what the references say and was therefore conservative in changing things around so as not to make the refs invalid. I'll try to get to the second through nth paragraph as time allows, but it's rather slow going given my unfamiliarity with the subject matter.

Clearly there is still room for improvement, so I won't be putting any scheduled League copyeditors out of work here. Revert if you don't like the changes, my feelings will survive intact. -- Michael Devore (talk) 12:41, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was rather more aggressive in reworking paragraph 3 to get a better read, but I think it retains your meaning. Michael Devore (talk) 17:20, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As Western Chalukya architecture is now edited by Finetooth, I won't be making further changes to the article except on the unlikely chance I clearly see a problem. -- Michael Devore (talk) 14:56, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Better and better[edit]

Hi Dinesh, Western Chalukya architecture is getting better and better, and I'm glad you were not discouraged for long. The new graphics and explanations of key terms will certainly help to clarify things for people who know little about architecture and little about southern India. I'm sorry that I entered into the FAC debate; I did not feel at all comfortable in that hot kitchen. I am interested mainly in improving the encyclopedia, and I can see that that is your main interest as well. The Western Chalukya article is fascinating, which perhaps I did not say before. Best wishes with the article and with future articles. Finetooth (talk) 21:30, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thanks for inviting me to take a look at Western Chalukya architecture. If I had spotted it before I may have got involved in the FAC. You have obviously done a great deal of work on this and had a bruising time in the FA review. It is a topic I know nothing about - which makes it interesting, but also because I am unfamiliar with many of the terms makes reading the article complex - which may be true for other reviewers. I was torn between the architecture and the religion, and although both are obviously linked, may put off those more specifically interested in the buildings and the techniques used than the different deities. Is there are overview article of the religious aspect which could be linked to from the article for those requiring further information? Personally I would move the table listing "famous temples" to a separate article(& watch out for terms such as "famous" as they may fail WP:NPOV). I wish you luck with further development of the article and if I see it resubmitted for FA I will look at it again more closely.— Rod talk 15:36, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replied on my page, and there is a message there to for you from Raul! Giano (talk) 16:44, 8 January 2008 (UTC

Lurking at Giano's page as usual, I've made many adjustments to your text, but I was sorry to see that I hadn't completely fixed the snafus I caused in our edit conflict. You'll want to vet my edits, and I hope selectively revert to your text ,if I've created confusions or shifted the meaning. I haven't looked at the comments made over the article's FA status — often less than useful I find — so the following are quite independent suggestions:

  • You have three stories to tell: by typology, by chronological stylistic development, by region. Keep them separate, under clear descriptive headings more specific than "Evolution", each with its own brief introductory summation. Give a brief disambiguating definition of every term as it first comes up, set into a footnote if it would intrude on the flow of text. None of this is familiar territory to the average fairly well-informed reader (myself!).
  • You have a concise summary opening. Why not follow it with the historical and geographical setting, to orient the unfamiliar reader? Label the section with something obvious, like Historical and geographic setting".
  • You have three aspects of typology: give them their separate subheadings and discuss them completely before moving on. Indian mathematics and geometry do need to be mentioned in relation to floorplans.
  • You have a series of examples to offer, within the stylistic chronology. Ideally each one or each group should have its own paragraph, with a summary topic sentence.
  • Your illustrations should be integrated with the text. The relevant illustration might be flagged (illustration, right illustration, below left) in the text, just at the moment where the reader should stop and look. Text and relevant illustration should appear in the browser's window at the same time.
  • In overviews of broad architectural movements sometimes it's useful to parenthetically insert the clearest example — or rarely two — following statements (Siddhesvara Temple); this saves lots of repetitious "such as at the.." etc. (The teenagers who set themselves up to vet "FA"s may be unfamiliar with this convention, however, and decry it.) --Wetman (talk) 20:17, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will look into each one carefully..Dineshkannambadi (talk) 20:26, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Illuminated deities[edit]

"The vestibule receives even less light, making it necessary to have some form of artificial lighting day and night. This artificial source of light adds mystery to the image of the deity worshipped in the sanctum.[29]" This phrase seems to be bothering some people, could you check the reff and see if we can perhaps change "mystery" to something like drama and impact or emphasis - perhaps even go the whole way and say "mystical quality" -what exactly does the reference say? If we can just put "mystery" in specch marks that will do so long as the reff uses that term. I see the book was written in 1929 is the form of artificial lighting used in ancient times mentioned too - flaming torches etc? Giano (talk) 23:07, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS:I'm going to bed now so the page is all yours :-) Giano (talk) 23:09, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry Dinesh, you will have to sort this [1] out yourself, I really don't want to ne involved in any more conflict just at the moment. Life is too short. I'm happy to help and advise you on getting this through FAC but (although the FAC page can be a tough place) I have never before seen comments like that on FAC - it is just not possible to assist in a collaberation under those circumstances. Giano (talk) 23:24, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

C'mon then lets get going you have not answered my question "could you check the reff and see if we can perhaps change "mystery" to something like drama and impact or emphasis" and where is the conclusion you promised me? It'll be fine and sail through - we'll laugh all the way to the bank with a page as good as this. Giano (talk) 19:29, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll echo Giano's thoughts. If "mystery" is mentioned in the book, you should be able to direct-quote it with a reference. See my thoughts on how this sentence should pan out in the FAC. AreJay (talk) 14:49, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bold[edit]

Hi Dinesh, I just took a look at WP:MoS and it says:

Italics are used sparingly to emphasize words in sentences (bolding is normally not used at all for this purpose). Generally, the more highlighting in an article, the less the effect of each instance.

So based on this, I would suggest, use boldface only for the article name (that too, the very first appearance in the lead), unless it is absolutely required to use boldface. Hope this helps - KNM Talk 15:32, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What language[edit]

Here Vashishtiputra_Satakarni from this there is a language caled Dravidian called out in the coin (reverse)Dravidian legend in the Brahmi script: "Arahanaku Vahitti makanaku Tiru Hatakaniko. Is it Kannada or Telugu ? Taprobanus (talk) 16:02, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If we can get a an expert or an RS citation on the origin of this language, it will place Kannada or Telugu writing that much earlier Taprobanus (talk) 16:21, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it is saying Arahanaku Vahitti is the son of Tiru Hatakaniko. Where Tiru is a translation of Sri or Siri ( it is still used in Tamil, I am pretty sure Hale Kannada must have had it early on too beacuse the codified and refined Centamil had considerable influence from languages or dialects used in present day Karnataka due to the Jaina/Buddhist connections in codifying that dialect as a standard. Now if we can figure out what language does Makanaku belongs Kannada or Telugu (Makan in Tamil is Son, so it may be Kannada ?) 16:28, 17 January 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Taprobanus (talkcontribs)
Tamil language is not Sankritized but it has borrowed words from Sanskrit. These loan words are classified seperately as "vadachol" (Northern Alphabets) they are written in Tamil Script and their usage is not seen in old epics of Chilappathikaaram or Sangam literature texts etc.., (example: ஹ(Ha), ஸ(Sa), ஷ(Sha), க்ஷ(ksha)). It is said that the Tamil culture during Sangam literature was an amalgum of both Dravidian and Aryan culture and "vadachol" (Northern Alphabets) is believed to be brought to dravidian language by Aryans. --Narendran (talk) 02:29, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Poverty in India Image[edit]

Beggar in Bodhgaya

There is a discussion going on regarding whether or not the following image should be a part of the Poverty in India page. Most Poverty in *Country* pages do not have any images, at most 1. User:Otolemur crassicaudatus has brought many images showing extreme poverty in India and has tried to mislead people into thinking this is the way a majority of poor Indians live. There is a vote in which your input would be appreciated. You can find this discussion here

I feel that the the Bodhgaya Beggar image does not represent poverty in India correctly because:

  • The beggar in Bodhgaya image does not accurately depict poor people in India because they do not look like this. This man is an exception. To say that this man represents all poor people in India is very wrong. A small minority of Indias poor are disabled. Most living under the poverty line work long hours fishing, farming or as construction workers. This picture shows a man whose legs have been broken. Unless a majority of India's or even a fraction of the poor have legs like this, the image is irrelevant and undue to the poverty in india page.
  • Poverty and Disability are not connected in any way. There are thousands of super rich people who are disabled.
  • There are 11 country articles on poverty
  • This user is being uncivil and unyielding. This user has tried to have my user page deleted because it said America is priceless!
  • This image is being used by User:Otolemur crassicaudatus to display his dislike of India and to mislead people into thinking that this is the plight of millions of poor Indians. This user has often added images showing extreme poverty to many India relating articles.[2] Even though this user knows that poverty is present in every country and that extreme poverty is not a fair representation of the Indian economy, this user has previously tried to add an image of children washing their clothes in a mud puddle to the economy section of the India page. This user has added this image to the poverty section of the Economy of India page, when a graph showing poverty would make more sense.
  • WP:Undue says:
We should not attempt to represent a dispute as if a view held by a small minority deserved as much attention as a majority view. Views that are held by a tiny minority should not be represented except in articles devoted to those views. To give undue weight to a significant-minority view, or to include a tiny-minority view, might be misleading as to the shape of the dispute.

This can be applied to this because a very tiny fraction of poor people in India are disabled. Most work very hard trying to make a living for themselves. This image is misleading. Nikkul (talk) 02:55, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dineshkannambadi, in your talk page this user has made wild accusations on me. I will request you please read the relevant sections on Talk:Poverty in India to give you an inside in this user and to understand who is incivil. You please read the texts like these [3], [4], [5]. The Bodggaya beggar image is more appropriate than others because:

  • You may know, many beggars live a condition like this, many of them have various disabilities.

There is no "typical" definition of poverty, or beggar. There are abled beggar, disabled beggar. The purpose of the article is depicting poverty. The other beggar images which this user want to place deleting the Bodhgaya beggar image are not good quality, one is B&W, and the other depicting a beggar girl in Ladakh. But my objection here is that Ladakh is quite different from rest of the country because of its geographics. Majority Indians live in plain. And this Bodhgaya beggar image is showing poverty at its most extreme level. It is not right to conceal the situation of poor men like this, it is the truth, the reality. This image touches the heart of the reader, which is a real situation. Yes not all beggars are disabled, but is this an argument? On the other hand it also can be said that not all beggars are abled. Our job here is not to understand who is abled, or who is not. But to find a good image which is representative of many.

  • This user is repeatating his arguments and has taken a densive position by his ad hominem attack on me. Any one do not agree with him, here I am trying to depict poverty, and he is labelling me as Indophobic. There are other editors who honoured me for my contributions. The only reason given against this image that "since all beggars have not messed up legs, this image is undue". But it is an anti-individualistic argument. So what if not all beggars do not have messed up legs? The fact is that such secenes is a reality and it would not be right to conceal it. Such scenes exists, it is the truth. If it is reality, if such scenes exits, then an article depicting poverty i.e. "the condition of lacking full economic access to fundamental human needs such as food, shelter and safe drinking water", only those images should remain which clearly illustrate this fact.
  • This user has informed many partisan editors, like User:Bakasuprman about the image. This user also informed this to banned Hkelkar socks. I will also request you check this user's contributions. Please remember the article is not about India, but the article is about poverty. This article is not depicting India, depicting poverty in India. So such image is not deriding India, it is illustrating the poverty in India. This image, I think, will be very appropriate. I have told you why I am supporting the includsion of this image. Regards.
