Go Se-tae

Hi. Here's how to navigate Naver News Library:

  1. When you click that "Obituaries" source link, it'll pop up a window with pictures of mouse buttons. Press the "X" in the upper right to close it.
  2. Then it'll open a window with the OCR'ed text of the article. You can click the "X" in the upper right to close that too.
  3. The actual scan of the article is the blue-outlined section of the newspaper at the lower left.
  4. You can zoom in by rolling your scroll wheel up or by double-clicking, and move the newspaper by clicking and dragging.
  5. Go Se-tae's obituary is the very left-most one in that blue-outlined section, with the "116" in it. Starts with a black triangle and his name in hanja 高世泰 (Columns run vertically and go from right to left).

You can't copy & paste the text or the pictures, but at least the Printscreen key should still work. Hope that helps. 59.149.124.29 (talk) 03:11, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

Unfortunately I can't find any confirmation about Hong Jong-o. I.e. no further newspaper reports explicitly confirming he's alive (sounds like you found the same Yonhap article I did about Choi Yun-chil going to the 2012 Olympics, which mentioned Hong at the end [1]), but no hits on '"Hong Jong-o" obituary' either. Let me know if there's others I can help you with. Cheers, 59.149.124.29 (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2018 (UTC)

13 years of editing, today

Hey, Canadian Paul. I'd like to wish you a wonderful First Edit Day on behalf of the Wikipedia Birthday Committee!
Have a great day!
Chris Troutman (talk) 18:33, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Hey, thanks for noticing! A nice surprise for the day. Canadian Paul 18:37, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
wow! 13 years! Happy anniversary!
You should have learned about talkpage archive by now though. usernamekiran(talk) 23:46, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
I'll get to it eventually, probably. Canadian Paul 13:37, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Oldest living footballer

FYI, Arthur Smith (footballer, born 1915) is not the "oldest living professional footballer" as you claim phere - he is the oldest former player whom played in the Football League, as confirmed here. It's possible that foreign players are still alive, though I agree that it is very unlikely for someone born 1909 like Zoltán Szaniszló. GiantSnowman 15:40, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Ah, my mistake, thank you for pointing that out. At some point George Haigh was declared the oldest living professional footballer, but of course he was superseded by Smith, which is where I think my wires got crossed. In any case, I'll stop using that as a justification for changing categories. Canadian Paul 15:51, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@GiantSnowman: Just pinging to request some clarification, would it be safe to move, for example, Bob Foster (footballer), into the YOD missing category based on the articles declaring Smith/Haigh the oldest in the EFL? Just want to make sure we're both on the same page regarding the interpretation of the source, since I erred last time. Canadian Paul 14:29, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Agreed that Foster is likely deceased, so we can move into YOD category. GiantSnowman 14:44, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Athletes

Hi Paul. Hope you're well. As far as I can tell, every single person who competed in track & field at the Olympics now has an article (not counting that bizzare triathlon at the 1904 Games). Hopefully all of them are in the appropriate category for living/possibly living, esp. the people from the 1936 and 1948 Games. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 13:39, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

I really don't know how you have the patience for all of that, but that's utterly fantastic! I'll check it out when I have a little extra time and let you know what I find! Canadian Paul 14:16, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
Got through 1928 and 1932 and started on 1936 so far. In addition the few changes I made, both Stavros Velkopoulos and Emil Hübscher are deceased, date uncertain. Canadian Paul 10:00, 17 February 2018 (UTC)
1936 done with some changes. Christos Dimitropoulos, Fritz Neuruhrer, and Toshinao Tomie are all deceased, date unknown. Canadian Paul 13:32, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
1948 complete. Anni Bruk was probably born July 27, 1924 and died October 20, 1998, according to Austrian cemetery records. Robert Hawkey and Ioannis Lambrou are deceased, date unknown. Canadian Paul 18:06, 23 February 2018 (UTC)
1952 done. Nikolay Kuchurin died June 16, 1995; it will be updated on Sports Reference eventually. Paul Faucher died April 15, 2007 according to the French Wikipedia, for whatever that is worth. Geraldo de Oliveira is deceased, date unknown.
And done. Svatopluk Sýkora is deceased, date unknown. You also have Taisto Laitinen listed twice on your page. Also, I see you've moved on to new sports, and I noticed that Isamu Sekiguchi is also deceased, for what it's worth. Canadian Paul 10:02, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Are you sure that he just did not show up to say Hey i'm alive? How can we be sure that there are no older alive footballer than that English one born in 1915? I personally prefer to presume he could be alive, it's not like he is born in 1696, it is biologically possible to be 107, if you see what I mean. --Spafky (talk) 18:18, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia reflects its sources. If a source is considered reliable, and there is no contradictory information, then we go with what the source says. To do otherwise would be considered original research. It may be possible that he is still alive and you may personally prefer to presume what you may, but Wikipedia can only represent what actual, verifiable sources say. Otherwise the project who degenerate into arguments about our personal preferences. Canadian Paul 14:12, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Paulina Radziulytė

Where did you get the date of death from? The social security death index just says June with no day. Listed here under Kalvaitis last name: https://sortedbyname.com/pages/k101882.html Renata (talk) 13:06, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Actually I cannot even access that link where I am, so I looked it up on a different website. Turns out I was mistaken; I thought I was looking at the SSDI record, but I was actually looking at the Massaschusetts Death Index. The SSDI record only has June, but the Massachusetts Death Index has the full date at https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VZ55-8SM. You have to sign up to view it, but it is free. Canadian Paul 12:43, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Bertus Brandsen

Hi CP, can I ask what your thoughts are on this? Both of Bertus_Brandsen's EN and NL Wiki pages would have you believe he's a centenarian, but this link suggests he has died in Amsterdam sometimes in the 2000s or 2010s. Though it's vagueness makes me wonder if the webmaster is assuming he died sometime subsequent to when he was last known to be alive. Do you think safe to mark as deceased? Cheers --Jkaharper (talk) 15:42, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Could really go either way. I think it's safe to mark him as deceased because a reliable source is making that claim and it is not up to us to question the reliability of particular pieces of information that it presents unless that information is contradicted elsewhere. You may find later that another reliable source claims that he is alive and that you get reverted, but that is how it goes. Canadian Paul 12:45, 20 February 2018 (UTC)
Reinforces my instinct. Have edited page. Thanks CP. --Jkaharper (talk) 16:21, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

Joan Barry

Find a Grave is a reliable source, so please don't revert my edit. It's highly unlikely that Joan Barry is still alive and if she was, she'd be well over ninety years old. She died on October the 1st, 2007. 60.240.8.249 (talk) 21:46, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

As was explicitly linked when you were reverted, Find-a-Grave is "almost never" a reliable source and I see no reason to make an exception here, especially, as I pointed out, that this is a perfect case of it being a circular reference to original research on Wikipedia. Regardless of how "likely" it is that she is still alive, Wikipedia's policies on the biographies of living people are clear that a person should be considered living (or possibly living if over the age of 90) unless there is verifiable evidence in reliable sources that they are deceased. Since Find-a-Grave is not reliable, it cannot be used here. We must make absolutely certain that anything printed in biographical articles is true and verifiable, because we know that these biographies can have real and potentially serious effects on actual individuals. Canadian Paul 20:06, 26 February 2018 (UTC)
I and I'm sure others greatly appreciate the attention to good sources and verifiable information...so thanks. It seems the Find-a-grave death date and some other info (but not everything mentioned on the Find-a-grave entry!) is available now from public government records, specifically: the U.S. Social Security Applications and Claims, 1936-2007. The most direct reference to this info that I know of, is exactly here at the paid site [Ancestry.com]. I'm brand new here so I don't want to go whacking pages that have gone back and forth, but I'm more than willing to help for this small issue however possible. I'd attach the text here of the actual SSA record showing all the data but as a total newbie, I think that's also probably not best. In the SSA record, the maiden name, birth date, birthplace, and parents are exactly as the article states. There is a SocSec claim date of 15 Nov 1968, and a death date of 1 Oct 2007. The SSN listed (publically available data for those deceased, used by banking and others to prevent criminal forgery) is 526-02-0304. The final name (also mentioned in the wiki but nowhere sourced) is Mary L Baker. This info fits statements by her son Stephen. It's somewhat troubling that surname Seck is not mentioned in the record, but that is not unheard of. So we can safely say, either this death date is correct or else some of the other info already in the current wiki page is incorrect. There is also the possibility that the US record was forged by someone - which would also not be unheard of and would be quite challenging to prove. There was a note that the FBI had the SSN - it might be possible to corroborate. Psychesy (talk) 02:10, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
Ah, this is a bit of an old post so I will have to take some time out soon to go over what is going on (and what has happened since). In the meantime, you may get more traction if you post this information on the article's talk page here. Canadian Paul 03:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Olympics page

Hi,

I noticed that your page User:Canadian Paul/Olympics used to be a comprehensive list with country, year, etc but now is just a bunch of links and the history is gone. What happened to the page? Did it get deleted by accident?

Regards 172.56.30.83 (talk) 21:04, 12 March 2018 (UTC)

The original purpose of the page was to list a group of individuals who were notable enough to have Wikipedia pages, but potentially obscure enough that WP:BLP-type vandalism might go undetected for long periods of time. It was (in theory) easier to check "related changes" than to add every page to my watchlist. I wanted to make it a bit interesting as well, hence all the extra details, but it sort of spiraled out of control and started edging dangerously close to violating WP:WEBHOST and WP:UPNOT, if not crossing the line. So I transferred the list to a personal web page, to preserve the hard work, and then replaced it with just a list of (most of) the names, so I could retain the original purpose of monitoring the names (which, thorough "related changes", is now MUCH easier without all the extraneous information). I have no plans to delete the "possibly living" page, since there isn't as much extra information there, and it would take more time to reduce it to "just names" then it would be worth at this point. Cite sports-reference

Hi Canadian Paul, I see that you reverted my edit with the edit summary "This template is for use in external links only, as it does not provide sufficient information for an inline citation and diminishes the quality of the citation" By that, you refer to my use of Template:Cite sports-reference. Your rationale is incorrect, as this template is specifically designed for inline citations (note the "cite" bit in its name) and it'a Template:Sports-reference that is designed for use with external links. The difference between what the template produces and your use of a cite web template is that you show some of the "MADmen" who have compiled the Sports Reference database. Whilst the four have led the work, as it says in the footnote on the linked page, there were many more authors who have made substantial contributions. To me it's questionable whether a database should have authors listed. If it should have authors listed, why not integrate them into the template? That said, there is a discussion about this particular aspect on the talk page of cite sports-reference where an editor argues this shouldn't be done. In summary, the underlying rationale for your revert appears to be based on a mis-understanding on your part, and if it ought to be done "your way", I would say that those changes should be implemented via amending the template if you could establish consensus for doing so. Thoughts? Schwede66 17:25, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

There was a discussion on this topic in the past between myself and another editor, which required a WP:3O that sided with the idea that a detailed citation should not be replaced with a citation that contains less information. It may be an old and small consensus, but it is the best one we have got right now. Furthermore, we need not use a template simply because it is there for our convenience. I don't see much value in taking away information about the citation when we indeed know that it will disappear in the near future. I suppose we could start a new discussion about it somewhere, but where? As you pointed out, the discussion on that template talk page is pretty stale and, moreover, SR will be shutting down eventually, so it seems as if the whole discussion would soon be moot in any case. So I don't see any misunderstanding on my part, rather the necessity of shorthanding essentially this discussion into an edit summary while making vague reference to the language in the template that could, I admit, be confusing. So I apologize for the mis-communcation.
Regarding whether the database should have the authors listed, I would ask, why shouldn't it, when a lot of hard work has gone into compiling the database and its contents are protected by copyright and it helps us better identify the source that the material came from? Again, it could be integrated into the template (although I lack both the skills and interest to do so), but why bother when the site has an upcoming expiry date? It is not about doing it "my way" (one would think that, as we are both experienced editors, there could be a little more assumption of good faith than that here), but about what has been done in the past based on an (albeit very weak) consensus has been.
Finally, while we're chatting, could you please also be carefully about not using the "birth date and age" template in the infoboxes of possibly living people? Since we don't know whether or not they are alive, we can't verify that they are the ages claimed by the template and since most of them are likely deceased, it doesn't make much sense to list them as being a certain age. Canadian Paul 17:52, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
@Schwede66: Like this. Pinging you because I realize that I should have done that in my earlier message. Canadian Paul 21:05, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
Hi again, thanks for your considered response. I hope I can address all the issues raised by you:
  • If you feel that the author information is useful, and others agree (and I see that you had User:Darkfrog24 concur with you), then we should seek a bit more input and if we do get consensus, it's very simple to amend the template (I'd be happy to do the work).
  • Do you want to draft a note to that effect? I suggest that the template talk page is the appropriate location. We can then inform others through a notice to a few WikiProjects (e.g. Olympics, Sports, etc).
  • The fact that SR will shut down is irrelevant as the content will, at the very least, still be accessible via various archive services.
  • When I used the term "misunderstanding", I was referring to you saying that "this template is for use in external links only". That is most definitely not the case; it is a citation template for inline referencing.
  • My used the phrase "your way" did not in any way imply bad faith. If it came across like that, please accept my apologies. I still can't see why it implies bad faith, but little subtleties are sometimes lost on me as English isn't my first language.
  • I accept your point that removing authors that you manually added is not to be done.
  • I accept your point that adding an age calculation to people in their 90s is probably not a good idea (unless we have some more recent references about them). Bringing up that point is timely, as I'm working my was backwards through the history of the European Rowing Championships and I'm currently working on the late 1940s and early 1950s (i.e. people born in the 1920s or 1930s). Schwede66 00:51, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
Hi Schwede66. I'll address the SR template issue when I have a little more time (busy week this week), but I did want to throw in a quick response to acknowledge that I received the message in case you see me spot editing a thing or two and think I'm ignoring it. As for the birth date and age template, Category:Possibly living people is used only for those who would be 90 years or older and have had no update within the last 10 years or so (I'm paraphrasing a bit from the category plus relating my experience in using it, as I frequent it often), which is to say that anyone born in the 1930s should be fine to use the BDA template. Canadian Paul 19:16, 17 March 2018 (UTC)
Have had a big week myself, including travel over the last three days. But now it's weekend here and I've got time to work with you on progressing this. And thanks for amending the Hansjakob Keller article. Schwede66 18:02, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

Okay, I've drafted a note. I've tried to keep it concise, in the hopes that people can review the previous discussions, but it might be too concise, so I definitely think there's room for improvement here:

"I wanted to raise the issue, and form a consensus, regarding the idea of adding author information to this template. This stems from two discussions, one back in 2016 and a second more recently, where editors replaced a more detailed citation with the template, which I reverted in both cases because I felt that it provided less information than the full citation I had provided and thus lowered the quality of the citation. In the first case, I had a third opinion agree with me, and the second case has led to this discussion, which means that there is yet to be a strong consensus on the issue.

@Schwede66: has suggested (and I concur) that a proposal should be raised here to add author information on the template, which would address my objection to using the template instead of a regular citation. The question is what author information to include: Justin Kubatko is often raised as a contributor, but he is involved in running the site, not contributing the data, so he’s responsible for presentation rather than content. My suggestion (and what I have been doing when I use a regular template) is to list the group leaders noted at the bottom of each page (Hilary Evans, Arild Gjerde, Jeroen Heijmans, and Bill Mallon – the latter of whom is the founder). Unlike some of the other information in the contributors and sources section, this information is still up to date (full disclosure: I’m one of the contributors to the data), and is unlikely to change, so it would make for a stable template. Therefore, I am posting this here to garner a consensus on the issue of including author information in the template, and what the nature of that information should be."

Let me know how you think it should be modified. Canadian Paul 08:46, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

That's good. I guess for clarification, a final sentence could be added that summarises the proposal, maybe like so: "In summary, I propose that the parameters last1, first1 through last4, first4 be added to the template, including author-link4 for Mallon." Schwede66 17:33, 24 March 2018 (UTC)
Good idea. Posted (as you probably guess from the ping). Do you want to post a notice on WP:Olympics and perhaps elsewhere? Canadian Paul 14:12, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
Implemented as discussed. Thanks! Schwede66 19:19, 18 April 2018 (UTC)
By the way, if Ove Nielsen was still alive in 2008, he could probably go into the "living people" category, although 10 years is about the border on that. Not sure what to think. (Also, I'm not stalking you specifically - just changes to the possibly living people category). Canadian Paul 14:40, 25 March 2018 (UTC)
Regarding Ove Nielsen, I'm pretty sure he's still alive. He seems to be well-known in Lillehammer and there's nothing in the local media about him having died. That said, I have reached the free search limit on the Gudbrandsdølen Dagningen site. Maybe you could have a look whether there's something more recent about him on their website. And even if you were stalking me, another set of eyes would be good as my process of creating rowing articles is semi-automated (mail-merge) and things do go wrong (e.g. the word "born" got dropped the other day for some strange reason, and I didn't spot it myself). Schwede66 21:03, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Angelo Polledri has a reference for birth date and birth place, death date and weight; none of that is shown in his SR entry. You might want to pass the reference on to your colleagues. Schwede66 20:14, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up! I'll send it in to them (when it appears on SR, of course, is another matter entirely...)! Canadian Paul 08:58, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Egbert Reinsfeld is mis-spelled on Sports Reference; he's listed as Reimsfeld on the database. Schwede66 23:34, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll look into it.

Here's another one for you. I think that in the 1920 coxed pair, the Belgian team is made up of three rowers. The official Olympic record is of no help as the team members aren't listed by name. The Belgian Rowing Association (Federation Royale Belge D'aviron) reckons that the Van Den Bossche brothers were the rowers and René Van Damme was the cox; SR lists Guillaume Visser as cox (or more precisely, as the third team member). Visser, according to the Rowing at the 1912 Summer Olympics – Men's coxed four article, was one of the rowers prior to WWI. Given how many European Championships medals Visser brought home it seems difficult to imagine that the Belgian Rowing Association denied him the 1920 honours. What do you reckon? Schwede66 22:00, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I'll forward this one/look into it as well, thanks! Might be a bit before there's a proper response, however, as the IOC site with the SR data just launched and so everyone is busy with that, working out the bugs, and so on and son. Canadian Paul 15:40, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

And another one. Malcolm Shaw died in 2014. Middle name, death date, and death location are all referenced in the article. The death notice says that he was 68; that puts his birth year published by Sports Reference out by two years. The death notice belongs to this individual as there's also an obituary from his home rowing club that came out in July 2014. Schwede66 18:46, 7 September 2018 (UTC)

Thanks again! I'll add it the queue and let you know once we can get to it! Canadian Paul 17:31, 8 September 2018 (UTC)

And another one. The French article for Jules Georges has his year of death (1983), his place of burial (Cimetière de Robermont), and lists that Robert George (rower) is his son. Schwede66 03:26, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

I suspect that Jean Cipollina is the correct spelling for the Italian rower; SR has him as Cipolina. The Italian surname does usually have a double 'l', and both FISA (not that that means anything) and the official Olympic report concur that it should be Cipollina. Schwede66 19:51, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
The Jack Godwin article has a few details that could be added to the database (year of birth, place of birth, middle name). Schwede66 06:46, 11 September 2018 (UTC)

@Schwede66: Regarding Egbert Reinsfeld, one of my colleagues sent me scans of his birth and death certificates; it's definitely Reimsfeld. Regarding Visser/Van Damme and Georges, we're still looking into those ones. Finally, you are correct about Shaw and Cipollina; they will updated the next time the database is updated (by either SR or the IOC). Thanks again for all the contributions! Canadian Paul 20:18, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Ilse Geisler was married to Mr Vorsprach (as per Volker Kluge's book of GDR sports personalities); SR has him as Vorspach. Schwede66 08:25, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

Hey Canadian Paul, let me add something related to Sports-Reference here as well. In September, I curated Sports-Reference profile links in Wikidata by looking them up on the SR athletes index. Besides lots of outdated residual profiles which did not get deleted during one of the past updates, I think I have spotted two duplicated persons in the latest version of the database:

  1. kh/viktoriya-khristova-1 and wr/victoria-wright-1 seem to be about Victoria Wright
  2. sh/nimrod-shapira-1 and ba/nimrod-shapira-bar-or-1 seem to be about Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or

Can you please have a look whether something needs to be merged on SR side? Besides these two cases, I have not found any other (suspected) true duplicates. Wikidata has links to around 86% of all SR/olympics profiles meanwhile. —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:07, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

@Schwede66: and @MisterSynergy:, thanks for these; I will look into all of them and let you know. I can say that Shapira has already been merged and will be corrected in the next database update. Canadian Paul 18:19, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Here's another one for you. Bettine Jahn is listed as Bettina Gärtz. Firstly, her given name is mis-spelled. Secondly, given that she was already married when she became world champion her common name is her married name. At least I have the impression that SR goes with common name rather than the name at the last Olympic Games that they competed at. Schwede66 18:27, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll look into this one too! Canadian Paul 20:55, 30 November 2018 (UTC)
The maiden name for Silvia Fröhlich is missing: Arndt. Spotted her competing under that name in 1978 in Karapiro; FISA lists her as Fröhlich-Arndt but Volker Kluge doesn't show her maiden name in the second edition of his book Das große Lexikon der DDR-Sportler. Schwede66 18:37, 2 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up! That's an easy fix for the next update. Canadian Paul 18:18, 7 December 2018 (UTC)

Olympic centenarian

Hi Paul. For info, I spotted a recent change on my watchlist to the article for Bill Brown (racewalker), with a source saying he was 100+ when he died. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:10, 26 March 2018 (UTC)

Yup. He died August 25, 1980 at the age of 101 years, 262 days. It'll be updated on SR sooner or later (probably later). Cheers. Canadian Paul 19:58, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Much, much later! :D Now updated thanks to Olympedia. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:50, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
Wow. Well I am glad that you remembered this, because he was not even on my update list. Kudos to you. Canadian Paul 04:00, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

Catherine Pym

Hi Paul. Just incase you missed this, Catherine Pym died on 28 March. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:27, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw that. How unfortunate. Canadian Paul 10:33, 7 April 2018 (UTC)

No reason to preserve an impetuous remark

I realize you probably won't be able to understand this, but let me repeat myself. Exhausted at the end of the 1960 Olympic marathon, Arthur Keily, who had a long and extraordinary career as a marathon runner, made an impetuous remark that an inept reporter was stupid enough to include in a story. It was simply sour grapes, possibly momentary. There was nothing notable about that remark, it was not well founded, and Keily may have regretted it immediately, but your zeal to preserve it is very unfortunate. It diminishes the man, in the unfathomable absence of any reason to do so. In my opinion, your intransigence doesn't speak well to your own judgment. Aside from that, I appreciate that you authored the article in the first place because he certainly deserved to be remembered for his ability and efforts. I just hope that Keily didn't read it before he died at almost 95 years old, two years ago. I hope that you aren't similarly remembered for something ignorant and inconsequential you may have said in your lifetime. Activist (talk) 19:36, 17 April 2018 (UTC)

We've already discussed this at great length and you are not adding anything new to the conversation. I am, therefore, not going to rehash the same arguments. If you want to get what you want out of this, use reliable sources to cite material that supports your perspective. Invoke Wikipedia policy when making arguments. Establish consensus. Do not engage in personal attacks. These are the fundamentals of Wikipedia and the suggestions I have given to help you make the changes you want, yet you continue to ignore them and choose to try and push forward your own point of view instead. Refusing to follow Wikipedia's processes and procedures just to get your own way is, as I said in my edit summary, disruptive editing that will be brought to WP:ANI. SR database tweaks

Given that you have a connection with Sports Reference, I wonder whether you could initiate some changes to their database:

I'm sure I'll come across other things that can also be mended. If this is the right way to initiate improvements, I'll let you know about it. If it's not the right way to do this, please suggest what can be done instead. Schwede66 19:47, 18 April 2018 (UTC)

I can definitely pass on changes and they should be corrected quickly in the underlying database. Unfortunately, SR takes a very long time to update their website based on that database (last update was in October or November 2017), so it may take a while for the changes to actually appear, but they will get there eventually. I'll message them about Lister and, as for the duplicates, if they are duplicates in the underlying database, then that's an easy fix. If they are SR-only duplicates, however, I'm not sure what can be done, since SR generally doesn't clean out their outdated pages (I presume that these duplicates get created when the underlying database changes the name of a competitor; instead of migrating the old page, SR just creates a new one and deletes all links to the old ones, but does not actually delete the old page itself). Canadian Paul 12:33, 20 April 2018 (UTC)
That is interesting background indeed and it explains why there are duplicate entries for some people. MisterSynergy, let me draw your attention to this as this violates the single value constraint (D:Q19474404) for Sports Reference IDs (D:Property:P1447). Based on the older entries not being updated, it should be possible to distinguish the older from the newer entries and if so, Wikidata could identify the deprecated entry. That would be rather handy for editors of Olympic articles across all Wikipedia languages. Schwede66 19:32, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Oops, and I admit I completely forgot to ask about Leister. I'll get on that. Canadian Paul 21:11, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for ping. Most of these issues were indeed somehow known to me, although I didn’t see an explanation as detailed as the one by Canadian Paul. SportsReference has great detail about Olympic participants, but the technique of the website is … rather crappy unfortunately.
As far as I know, it is not always easy to identify the most recent version of the duplicated profiles. Even if one can do so, deprecation would not be the correct consequence as the identifiers are still technically valid. If one prefers the most recent identifier with ranks, one would solve lots of usability issues (only one value will be delivered to data users), but the constraint violation will not be gone. Interestingly we are discussing a new “single best-rank value” constraint type these days, in contrast to the current “single (non-deprecated) value” we have today; this would help here a lot…
Anyways, regarding SportsReference.com there was this announcement in 2016 (?) that they will move their data from sports-reference.com to the IOC. Canadian Paul, do you happen to know whether this plan is still valid? —MisterSynergy (talk) 21:19, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
@MisterSynergy: Yes, the data is still planned to be moved to the IOC, but the integration has been slow. It will happen eventually, but I couldn't even give you an estimate of when. Probably not soon though, and I think there's possibly (?) another SR update in the works. Last one was in October/November. Canadian Paul 21:24, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
@Schwede66: Regarding Karl Leister, one of the individuals behind the SR data did some in-depth research with some of the organizations involved with the regatta and the clubs that participated. He confirmed that SR is correct and the IOC is wrong: not only did Leister not participate in the event, but there is no evidence that he even traveled to Stockholm. Obviously this is too OR for Wikipedia, but it does explain why he is not on SR and won't be added. Canadian Paul 13:16, 31 May 2018 (UTC)
Interesting! Thanks for asking your colleagues. Schwede66 17:34, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

Mervyn Lee

Hi CP, thoughts on the last section on here? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Mervyn_Lee I was going to mark him deceased but would take a second opinion first. This site (http://australianpolitics.com/parliament/house/living-former-house-members-1949-1972) says he's alive but appears to be quite amateur so I'm torn. Thanks --Jkaharper (talk) 17:49, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

That's almost certainly him in the obituary but, with the conflicting information, it's probably best just to move him to the "possibly living people" category for now, unless consensus recommends otherwise. As you likely know already, his obituary is of almost no help at all. Canadian Paul 17:56, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Great job! I've already noticed a few names that should be in living rather than possibly living, but I'll go through them a bit more thoroughly when I have more time. Canadian Paul 11:45, 22 June 2018 (UTC)
Haven't had a chance to go through them yet but, before I forget, I noticed that per this message, Fouad Abdel Meguid El-Kheir and Abdel Rahman Hafez Ismail are deceased. Canadian Paul 08:29, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
Alright, I went through the list:
  1. Jindřich Kinský died April 8, 2008 according to the Czech Wikipedia, but there's no source.
  2. Robert Guillin probably died February 15, 1926, but I can't confirm that this obituary is his: [2]
  3. Nejat Diyarbakırlı died July 14, 2017. Should be in the next Sports Reference update.
  4. Salah El-Dine Nessim possibly died January 20, 2007, but I can't prove that the individual in the obituary is the basketball player: [3]
  5. Satoshi Matsui died August 1, 1995 according to Japanese Wikipedia, but the source is offline. Probably reliable though.
  6. Louis Van De Goor, Émile Laermans, Gustave Vereecken, Pierre Van Basselaere, Raymond Gérard, René Demanck, and Edward Risk Allah are all deceased, date unknown.

Age templates

Hi Paul, What do you think of this? Isn't it inappropriate to use years and days for someone who is not known for their age? I'm hesitant to revert this myself as this user has a long history of edit-warring whenever I tidy up after him. DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 04:06, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

I know we had a discussion somewhere about when and where it was appropriate to use that template, so the user may actually be abiding by the consensus... when I have a bit more time, I'll take a look and see if I can find where it was discussed (there's a lot of different talk pages it could be on). That said, if the current consensus allows that kind of thing, it might be time to establish a new consensus, and I would support limiting its use to just pages where the day count is actually of encyclopedic value, which I don't find to be the case here (he reached 110, what difference does it make how long he lived after that if he didn't set any longevity records?). Hi Paul. Following on from this, I found that most of the text in Howard Wing's article was taken straight from SR. I've removed it and tagged the talkpage, per the instructions. I've not done this CCI work before, so if I've missed something, or done something incorrect, please let me know. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 09:04, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Looks like you've done it properly. I normally just delete the offending revisions, but in this case I'll leave them there for easier review since there's an active investigation. I blocked that user a while ago for copyvios and started a request for a formal review, but nothing ever came of it and the block expired, so if he hasn't done it since, then the only thing left to do is let the investigation take its course. Glad to see that someone finally got on it though... Canadian Paul 18:16, 4 August 2018 (UTC)

Here's another one for the PLP category (I might nominate it at DYK as well) -- any chance you can do some looking to see if he may be alive or not? I can't find anything through my usual means. Connormah (talk) 22:35, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

I couldn't find any definitive proof, but public records seem to indicate that he is still alive. Those aren't 100% accurate, but in the absence of other evidence, it's probably a safe assumption that he is still alive. Canadian Paul 18:20, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
That's also what I found and was leaning towards; thanks. Do you think we should keep him in the PLP category, though? Connormah (talk) 19:49, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
I'd probably put them in living people, if for no other reason than it offers more protection. If you have to err on one side, better to assume they are living and be wrong I would think. Canadian Paul 19:50, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Nejat Diyarbakırlı

Hi Paul. Hope you're well. Interesting one for the article on Nejat Diyarbakırlı, an Olympic basektball player for Turkey in 1952. The article has two sources, one from Sports Ref, the other from Basketball Ref, but they both have a different DOB! My assumption is that the two sites are under the same hierarchy. Just thought I'd drop you a note. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 11:19, 10 January 2019 (UTC)

@Lugnuts: 1928 is correct: here is an extensive biography of him in Turkish, but the DOB is on the front page. The data provided by the different sports within "Sports Reference.com" actually comes from different sources, hence the discrepancy, but 1928 is definitely correct. He's also deceased, so I should probably update that too when I have a little more time. Canadian Paul 18:02, 12 January 2019 (UTC)

Right, Bill provided me with me a working URL in the meantime. Thanks for the feedback anyway! --RonaldH (talk) 22:07, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

What is the link for the people who are dead on certain Wikipedia?

Since I did find one on the shortest bios just now. Brahim Chibout, listed as living here, but dead on the French one! On another note I also found someone there that I moved to possibly living who was born in 1923-Lasse Oka Wgolf (talk) 01:53, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

Okay thanks for updating that, I found quite a bit of ones that might be living from the teens/20s that are listed as living or possibly. Now while this person is born in the 1930s, this was odd. I was looking up unsourced BLP's, and found this actress Ann Baker who was oddly updated 2 years ago as being dead with no source at all. So I just removed this (its odd as she is still listed under the cat living people, and nobody noticed it till now!) and I noticed she is listed as dead on another wiki. (Problem with some wikis though is I notice they have DOB's from random places that might not be accurate) Wgolf (talk) 05:20, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

I put up the tag on Viacheslav Lavrov, which was not put onto the page for that. Wgolf (talk) 22:21, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Copyedit request

Hey there. I noticed your name being part of the Horror WikiProject and I was wondering if you can help with copyediting an article I have nominated at FAC. It was recommended that Soultaker (film) should get another copyedit to help with its plot and production sections and having read your other articles from the video game project I thought it would be a good overlap. GamerPro64 14:58, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi @GamePro64:, I would be happy to help out, but I should warn you that I have never done a proper FA-level copyedit, and the last time I tried I got angry messages pointing to obscure policies I had never heard of. So while I am happy to give it a look and share some feedback, I should warn you ahead of time that it might not be very helpful. But, let me know! Canadian Paul 23:02, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

I have no idea how to 'talk' on Wiki. Can you just email me your question? Thanks. Tom Schmeh iowabasedtraveler at yahoo dot com

Sumiko Mizukubo actress who apparently lived from 1916 to 2019

Okay I apparently edited this article a while back and it appeared on my watch list Sumiko Mizukubo, it says she died in 2019, which someone put a source for, but I'm not sure if she lived that long or not. (If she did she should be added to the corrected pages). Wgolf (talk) 22:55, 20 May 2019 (UTC)

I removed the ref-saw it was a Tumblr post which that isn't a reliable source anyway. Well you can add her to your possibly living table at least! Wgolf (talk) 22:57, 20 May 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll look into it. Canadian Paul 17:40, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Found another one from 1915 which says they are living still Albert Karubuy. Though I'm iffy as there is no proof and don't know if they just said they were living. Wgolf (talk) 18:08, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
@Wgolf and Canadian Paul: Hi! The creator of Albert Karubuy here. I'm not sure he's alive, how to say that he's died even though we don't know the date?--Jeromi Mikhael (talk) 11:58, 24 June 2019 (UTC)
@Wgolf and Jeromi Mikhael: If there is a reliable source that lists him as deceased, then it can be added (even if it's just something that refers to "the late Albert Karubuy" without an actual date). Otherwise, he can just be moved into Category:Possibly living people, since he is probably deceased, but could still be alive. Canadian Paul 21:14, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi! I saw you listed at Wikipedia:Good article nominations/List of reviewers and was wondering if you might be able to do a GA review of Made in Canada? I'm hoping to have it on a DYK for 1 July, so I'm afraid I'm in a little bit of a time crunch. – Reidgreg (talk) 12:57, 3 June 2019 (UTC)

@Reidgreg: I can't look at it today, but if you can wait a few more days (they'll usually expedite a timed DYK) I can take care of it then if no one else has grabbed it. Canadian Paul 21:21, 7 June 2019 (UTC)

Question on Kalle Anttila

Hi CP, maybe you could take a look into an issue with Kalle Anttila, a Finnish wrestler and twice Olympic champion, if and when you have time. User:DorothyIan made unsourced changes of death date/place along with a story of his emigration to Canada, which I reverted. This happened twice, first time on 9 June, and second time on 23 June, note that the details of the change are different. Next, this editor has started a discussion on my talk page; the question is whether the Wikipedian Kalle Anttila is the same person as their great-grandfather, who they explained emigrated from Finland to Sudbury in Canada, but still competed in wrestling for Finland. Oceanh (talk) 23:28, 24 June 2019 (UTC)

@Oceanh: Since you have already replied mentioning that they must have reliable, verifiable sources to back up their edits, you can also tell that person to send me an email through Wikipedia with evidence of their claims and I can help forward to WP:OTRS, who will review it and make the changes if appropriate. Jean Yun & John Nicks

Hello CP,

John Nicks runs the now disband Santa Monica Figure Skating club in the 70's. Jean Yun skated in Santa Monica Figure Skating Club and was he's student. John Nicks took Jean Yun to the Olympic, World, & Grand Prix. It is published in the USFigureskating Magazine "SKATING" in the Feburary 2018 issue p26 Titled "Unbroken" written by David Lemieux. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dn54168 (talkcontribs) 04:55, 27 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi. Do you have any evidence that Yun is notable per WP:NSKATE? If so, then they can be re-added to that page with evidence of their notability. For example, if Yun really competed at the Olympics, then that would be notable enough, but I do not see any evidence of that. Otherwise, I presume that Nicks had many students, not all of whom can be mentioned on Nicks' page. Since this is an encyclopedia, we can only include references to notable individuals, per our policies on the biographies of living people. Canadian Paul 16:48, 1 July 2019 (UTC)

Seydi Dinçtürk

Hi Paul - hope you're well. For info, the death info for Seydi Dinçtürk has been updated to say that he died today, but you had a source of his death in 2013. Maybe he did a Reggie Perrin! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 16:45, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Alas, I lack the class to catch the reference, but I can at least confirm that the 2013 source was incorrect. There was a Facebook posting showing him alive (with a picture) in 2015, so the new obituary seems correct. Although the source came out yesterday, so there's no way that he died on the seventh. I'll change that now; hope all is well with you too! Canadian Paul 19:48, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
Great work as always - thanks. On an Olympic-related note, the WP article for Ferenc Szűts possibly has two pages on Sports Ref: one, two. I've just started work on the missing gymnasts, and I spotted this one. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 19:43, 12 July 2019 (UTC)
Yeah, unfortunately Sports Reference does not delete old versions of the athlete pages from their site (just the links to them), so there are a lot of doubles out there. The problem is not on the data end, so unfortunately we can't do anything about it. Canadian Paul 03:20, 17 July 2019 (UTC)

Ski jumping

Hi Paul. Moving on to the next Olympic sport, I'm now working on ski jumpers. I found the info about this guy very interesting. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 17:43, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

The article Major League Baseball (video game) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails the notability criteria with a severe lack of any reviews. Nothing on MobyGames or Web Archive that I was able to find for this game. I don't get how this possibly became a GA at one point considering its poor quality, and I doubt this is even notable to have its own article.

Nikolaos Kaloudis

Hi Paul - and a happy new year! For the article on Nikolaos Kaloudis there are two refs to Sports Reference for two different biographies on the SR site. Help with birth/death dates?

Hi - I could have this wrong, but I think you have helped me in the past with researching birth and death dates. If I have that wrong I apologize (though if you know of someone else who does this please let me know). I am trying to find birth and death dates for Blake Williams (basketball). He went to Lawton High School in Lawton, Oklahoma and played in college for Oklahoma State from 1944 to 1948 so probably a birthdays around 1922 (though he played during WW2 so it’s possible he served in the military before college). A user recently updated that he died in 2002, after living in Fort Collins, Colorado. Can you help me with birth and death dates and places? Bernard Batillat

Hi Paul, just letting you know that an IP editor added 1997 as the death year for Bernard Batillat, which was promptly reverted as unreferenced. If any of your colleagues have access to French newspapers from 1997, this might be a good detail to look out for. Schwede66 22:47, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi Schwede66. This is correct: he died September 4, 1997. A large French death index was released recently and this was one of the many hundreds of new data points the Olympic database added from it. It's also searchable at https://www.familysearch.org/search/. Unfortunately, this new data won't see the light of day on SR or the IOC for a long time, so unfortunately I cannot back it up with a source good enough for Wikipedia. Canadian Paul 06:18, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! That’s helpful. Schwede66 07:06, 14 April 2020 (UTC)
Article's been amended. Schwede66 04:26, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Well, hopefully it will stick, although I can see people having objections to it (I don't). In any case, at least with more recent deaths, I'm trying to use the index to find full obituaries - easier to do if you know where to look already. I'll be adding a few rowing obituaries momentarily. One that might interest you that I am having trouble finding is for Jean-Pierre Souche: he died January 10, but I cannot locate an obit. Canadian Paul 01:05, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
The reason why I created so many mini-bios was to reduce the number of red links in the European Rowing Championships articles, most of which I wrote some years back. Beyond that, I'm rather focussed on New Zealand rowers (or Kiwi bios in general) and not so fussed with other nationals. There's enough to do here! Schwede66 06:11, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Kenkichi Saito

Hi Paul. Hope all is well with you in the current climate. On Kenkichi Saito's article, an IP has removed the claim that he died during WWII, with a source of their death date being in 1960. However, it's just a bare cite of "Kenkichi Saito, The Asahi Shimbun", but it does look consistent with the article on the Japanese wiki. If you have a moment, are you able to help with this one? Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:29, 17 April 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately I don't have access to the actual article, but I don't see any particular reason to doubt it unless someone wanted to pull a very specific hoax on both the Japanese and English Wikipedias for some reason. Our database doesn't say where we got that he died during World War II, so I suppose this claim is just as reliable as Sports Reference in this case... sorry I can't be of more help. Canadian Paul 02:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
No problem - thanks for checking. On a related note, Etsuko Komiya was living, per your edit in 2017, but would now be 100 years old. Are you able to help confirm if he did turn 100? Thanks again! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 11:17, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
Nope, unfortunately I have not heard any news since 2012 - even asked a Japanese journalist that I know - but nothing. I was going to move her to "possibly living" on her 101st birthday, but I wouldn't revert anyone who moved her there now. Canadian Paul 02:04, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Another death

It is with a heavy heart that I have to report another death. After four years of uncertainty, the point has now been reached and life support for the Olympic part of the Sports Reference website got turned off. There will be many of us who knew this day was coming but it's still a shock that it has finally happened. "We have closed the site permanently" is what it simply states in lieu of an obituary.[1] Thanks for all the life that you have breathed into the site during your time. Schwede66 03:35, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

@Schwede66: - Paul's great work (and all the team's great work) lives on! An example from the site. I've also dropped a note at WT:OLY with regards to going forward on WP with refs, etc. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 12:23, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, we learned about this at the same time as everyone else, so none of us knew that it was coming yesterday specifically. I think Bill Mallon is going to post something on Olympstats soon to update everyone and see what we can do about access, which as the WP:OLY discussion suggests is being worked on. Just to clarify, can everyone see the regular pages on Olympedia now and is it up to date real time? For example, does the page for Giuseppe Carattino have a full visible date of death? Canadian Paul 21:09, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Also, are the research notes visible (for example, on Allan Smith as linked above)? Canadian Paul 21:16, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
Smith and Carattino pages open just fine and yes, there are research notes (which is a superb improvement). Schwede66 02:22, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
That's great then! That means everyone now has access to everything that has been updated over the course of the last 2.5 years since SR was updated, as well as immediate updates too. I know replace all of the old links is a pain, but at least this is some positive news. Canadian Paul 03:05, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Help with a birth date?

Hello C-Paul. I was wondering if you could help find a birthdate for Robert W. Matheny, who was an All-American basketball player for Cal Berkeley in the 1950s. I know he died on June 30, 1978 in the Bay Area at age 48 (see here and here), but can’t for the life of me find a birth date. Can you? Thanks for any help you can give. Thanks. Rikster2 (talk) 02:11, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Rikster2: - as per the California Death Index, 1940-1997 and U.S. Social Security Death Index, Robert William Matheny was born in California on February 9, 1929. Connormah (talk) 05:23, 24 May 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, busy week. Thanks Connormah! Canadian Paul 02:31, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks both! Rikster2 (talk) 14:05, 27 May 2020 (UTC)

DOBs / DODs ?

Hi Canadian Paul. I hear that you have access to registries for dates of birth and death. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind seeing what DOBs (and DODs, if applicable) are for Temple Tucker, Frank Ehmann, and Joe Capua? They're all recently created American basketball player biographies. TYIA! SportsGuy789 (talk) 15:39, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Oh and perhaps the DOD for Sam Lifschultz? Haha thanks again Paul! SportsGuy789 (talk) 22:10, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi @SportsGuy789:
  • Pretty sure that Temple Tucker is Temple Layfayette Tucker, born March 28, 1936: [4]. If it is that guy, I believe he is still alive
  • Pretty sure that the basketball Frank Ehmann was born December 23, 1933, which I got from public records. So not good enough for Wikipedia, but it may help you find more. Also still alive as far as I can tell.
  • Sam Lifschultz died December 25, 1951: [5]

I'm having more trouble with Joe Capua... I'll look into it a little deeper sometime soon, but it is possible that "Joe" is a middle name or nickname, which may be throwing things off. Canadian Paul 05:16, 18 June 2020 (UTC)

Thank you @Canadian Paul:!
  • I'm certain that's the correct Temple Tucker reference as well; he'd be 22 at graduation, and as of July 2017 he was still alive. I'll add it to his article
  • Ehmann is tricky, and I tried finding additional sources but couldn't come up with anything
  • I've added the DOD source to Lifschultz' article
  • 'Joe' being Capua's middle name or nickname is highly likely. A lot of athletes back then weren't known by their first names. I'll try to find more on him, too
SportsGuy789 (talk) 06:56, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@SportsGuy789: - (talk page stalker) As per the Wyo yearbook, his full name was Joseph/Joe Louis Capua, he was born February 26, 1934 in Gary, Indiana and died February 15, 1988 in Dallas, Texas (verified with Social Security Records) (also [6]). Unfortunately, I can't find any obituary that would be sufficient to cite in the article. Connormah (talk) 05:29, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
@Connormah: Appreciate the insight on Capua, that's great information. Hey @Rikster2: check it out. SportsGuy789 (talk) 05:59, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
@Canadian Paul: + @Connormah: – are you able to pin down a DOB (and maybe DOD) for Carroll Broussard? SportsGuy789 (talk) 15:24, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
@SportsGuy789: - likely born September 18, 1940 and still alive per public records. But like the above, not good enough for Wikipedia, but may help you find further. Connormah (talk) 15:19, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
Thanks @Connormah:! Canadian Paul 02:45, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Ronald Ross - conflicting DOBs

Hi Paul! Yesterday I created Ronald Ross (basketball). I've found sources conflicting his exact date of birth however. This one says March 11, 1983, while this one says February 11, 1983. Do you have a source that definitively states which is correct? SportsGuy789 (talk) 20:29, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Apologies - I somehow totally missed this message. I don't have anything on hand, but I can take a look and get back to you. Canadian Paul 04:13, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
@SportsGuy789: Actually, easier than I expected for such a common name. According to US public records, it's February 11. Obviously not a RS in and of itself, but it can break the tie between your other sources. Canadian Paul 04:39, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
Perfect - thanks! Tie-breaker is good enough for me. SportsGuy789 (talk) 04:41, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello Canadian Paul. You are the main author of Maxime Lehmann. It has been proposed that Max Lehmann (footballer) be merged with your article, it looks like they describe the same person. I also inform User:Huligan0 who created Max Lehmann (footballer) in March this year, so you both may sort out which content should be integrated into which article. The final article should have as title the name under which the person is best known while the other article may remain as a redirect. --Proofreader (talk) 11:06, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello Canadian Paul, after a short telephone conversation with our FCB historian this afternoon, I can confirm this is definitely the same person and Maxime Robert Lehmann was his full name. Do you want to do the merger? If not please let me know and I will do it. Greetings --Huligan0 (talk) 19:19, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
I can do it. Just let me know your thoughts on which title it should go under. Canadian Paul 03:58, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. I think Maxime Lehmann should be the title and Max Lehmann (footballer) to remain as a redirect. Friendly greetings --Huligan0 (talk) 09:10, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi Paul. Hope all is well. Working my way through everyone's fave Olympic event, I stumbled upon Hajime Ishimaru in the arts competition. Hello Mr. Paul, I've found an article which is not on Wikipedia, it is Marina Bondarko model related article.

There are many references of Marina Bondarko on Google.

Hassan Booker DOB

Hi CP! I was wondering if you might be able to dig up Hassan Booker's exact DOB? SportsGuy789 (talk) 14:43, 28 September 2020 (UTC)

Hey @SportsGuy789:: This report shows that his middle initial is "M." This aligns with a Hassan Mustafa Booker, born on September 1, who has lived in Los Angles, Tulsa, and Annapolis, which seems like the basketball player. His YOB varies in the public records, but it's probably 1975. Unfortunately, I don't have a source good enough for Wikipedia, but hopefully that gives you something to work with. Canadian Paul 01:47, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

Hamish Hardie

Hi Paul. Hope you're well. For Hamish Hardie a recent edit shows he is still alive (or at least as of 2018), which post-dates the info on his Olympedia entry. I assume the obit. date of 16 February 2017 comes from this source and it might not be the same person? Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 15:04, 9 October 2020 (UTC)

Yes, somehow even though the Hamish Hardie in the obituary was the same age, from the same place, and had a wife with the same name, it's not the Olympian. I'm pretty baffled, but it's a honest mistake to make. Canadian Paul 03:21, 14 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi - can you help me find death info for former American Basketball Association player Hank Whitney? Someone had added a death date of April 5, 2020. Thank you very much for your contribution. I know it's not the most important thing in the world, but I'm of the same opinion as you that it resembles one of the supercentenarian articles from 7-8 years ago, padded out with far too many unnecessary facts, and it bothers me that only two or three editors have basically 'unilaterally' decided what is to be considered worthy of being in the article. YSN Fab for speedy deletion (urgent request)

Hi Paul, some user named User:UpcomingPurse has created an article titled YSN Fab. Another user put the speedy deletion template for an instant deletion and User:UpcomingPurse already removed it. It is under "CSD G11". The spam article has too many spam edits and failing GNG, and he is not a notable rapper. So for my request please speedy delete YSN Fab under "CSD G11" and he is not a notable rapper and it has too many spam edits. This is an urgent request, please talk to User:UpcomingPurse to never create the article with too many spam edits and failing GNG because he is not a notable rapper, and finally speedy delete YSN Fab under CSD G11 and avoid re-creating the same YSN Fab article and never made threats against IPs. I am 100% positive I did not edit war and secondly User:UpcomingPurse has abruptly created YSN Fab article with too many spam edits and tell User:UpcomingPurse to never made threats against me and never make attacking comments to IPs. Isabel Judd

Hi Paul. Hope you're well. An interesting query has just been raised on the talkpage of Isabel Judd about her age/DOB. If you have a moment, are you able to help, esp. with the claim on Olympedia she married in 1913, but was born in 1909! Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 20:38, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

Lugnuts - that new info will appear on Olympedia at some point this weekend. It was a case of mistaken identity, as the current dates for Judd are for the incorrect person. Connormah (talk) 21:51, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 21:52, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
Olympedia was updated, so I just updated the Wikipedia page as well. Canadian Paul 03:51, 9 March 2021 (UTC)

DYK for John Moffet (swimmer)

On 4 March 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article John Moffet (swimmer), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that John Moffet set an Olympic swimming record despite injuring himself during the same race? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/John Moffet (swimmer). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, John Moffet (swimmer)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (ie, 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Lotte Haidegger and Felix Würth

Hi @Canadian Paul:, I've reverted them now but unsourced death dates were added last night to the pages of Lotte Haidegger (Feb 14 2004) and Felix Würth (Feb 25 2014). Might be worth looking in to if Olympedia has the resources at hand to do so. Thanks --Jkaharper (talk) 16:10, 7 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. Looking at it, and seeing where the IP is from, I would be pretty surprised if this was wrong, but I could not find anything to verify it. I've alerted the team though, so we'll look into it. Probably safe to put Würth in PLP though, since the last confirmed update was in 2012, which is close enough to the 10 years plus this new development. Also, speaking of original research, I think that this may be crossing that line a little. No doubt you are correct, but we should probably go with what the sources say even if they have a tendency to be off in some of the older cases. Canadian Paul 03:48, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
@Canadian Paul:, Assuming you were referring to the change in category, I've changed it back for now. The ESPN/Cricket Archive sources are becoming very depreciated as time goes by though, sadly. I think they've given up on doing any further research on many of the first-class cricketer profiles even though the answers are out there. 10 years ago it was a decent source, now I think their automated age counter is just very misleading if anything. A heads up for you if you ever go looking for McClintock's fate – she was living in 1991 in Muswellbrook, New South Wales as Florence Bowe. Can't trace her after that unfortunately. I wonder if it would be worth contacting ESPN cricket or Cricket Archive about these limbo profiles? Do you know anything about these sites – is it Cricket Archive who do the original research? Thanks again --Jkaharper (talk) 14:12, 9 March 2021 (UTC)
@Jkaharper: I was actually more concerned about Ancestry, mainly because she is potentially living (even though I agree that those sites are probably wrong), so it was more about BLP concerns. There is an element of that it's not up to us to individually judge the reliability of sources, but perhaps one day it would be worth bringing those sites to WP:RSN. Canadian Paul 05:32, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
@Canadian Paul: Yes I agree, and I have considered it in the past. I understand why Wiki doesn't like Ancestry, but I have a problem with the way they blanket out some sources entirely, rather than looking at things on a case by case basis and recognising that they can be useful and indicative in some instances (the Al Besselink case springs to mind). Where Ancestry ties in to another source by means of matching dates etc. it works as a good way of verifying exact dates, locations so in the case of Florence McClintock, the newspaper article I pulled up from 1940 talks about her being recently married to Mr. George Bowe, then Ancestry gives the exact date with the certificate itself. One day I'll fight this corner but I'm not confident I'd win right now. The upset on the Besselink talk page demonstrated just how strongly some people feel against any kind of non-academic or journalistic sources! --Jkaharper (talk) 12:53, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Enrico Perucconi

One more that may not have come to your attention. Enrico Perucconi, listed in the Possibly living on English Wiki... in January his Italian Wiki added a death date of 15th July 2020 with a location of Morazzone. All I could find online was a Press Reader article here. On page 44 there's an announcement for a man named Enrico Perucconi with his funeral held on 17th July in Morazzone, with a date underneath of the 15th (presumably his death date). It doesn't specify an age, DOB or mention that he was an Olympic medalist so I will turn this over to your lot for further analysis. Thanks again --Jkaharper (talk) 00:19, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for this; I had not seen it previously. We do have an Italian contact in the group, so I will forward this to him and see what he says. Canadian Paul 05:33, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
@Jkaharper: Our Italian contact was unable to confirm it. It's probably true, but the Italian Olympic Committee also put out a "happy 96th birthday" message after the alleged date of death, and he's not sure if that's automated or not. Either way, no confirmation yet, but definitely on the radar. Canadian Paul 03:03, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Zdenek Rylich

Hi. Zdenek Rylich was alive at least in 2013 (https://www.cbf.cz/ostatni/kratke-zpravy/zemrel-clen-sine-slavy-cbf-miroslav-skerik---nejlepsi-strelec-ktery-poctive-branil.html). And after death of his brother Bohuslav in 2020, he was mentioned with the present tense https://www.nymburk.basketball/clanek.asp?lang=cz&id=OPUSTILA-NAS-LEGENDA-4619. So, he's still alive, I believe--Pbk (talk) 08:04, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Great find, thanks! I had a feeling that he was still alive, so good to see some confirmation for it. I'll add him to the appropriate list shortly. Canadian Paul 03:04, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Work

Hi Paul. Thanks for your kind words. More than info than anything, but I've begun to work through all the Olympians from the first games onwards, adding in refs & updating DOB/DOD, etc. Up to 1908 at the moment! Always great to read the research notes on Olympedia, esp. when the original entry was "J Smith, dates uknown" becomes "John Smythington-Brown, born x..." complete with info about his life. Lost count of how many articles on WP had zero refs, including people who won medals. And thanks for your hard work too - it doesn't go un-noticed. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 06:41, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi again. Just found my first 1908 query! For the 12m sailing event, WP has a John Aspin as competing, complete with a cite to Olympic.org. However, Olympedia has a Robert Aspin competing in that event, complete with different DOB/DOD. One for further investigation. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 19:16, 7 April 2021 (UTC)
I actually have a huge list of Wikipedia pages that need updating with new information, but I only get around to denting it, like, once a year. Interesting that you mention the "J. Smith"s of the Olympics, because we have a big update of his French cousins coming very shortly. As for Aspin, the information for John is very outdated (at least seven years, probably more), and Robert is correct. Eventually Olympic.org will come around to updating it, but who knows when that will be. For what it's worth, Robin and his current dates are correct as far as I know. Canadian Paul 05:36, 9 April 2021 (UTC)
Zoot alors! Looking forward to seeing the French updates. Lots of fencers just listed as "Rene" from the inter-war Olympics! And if you need any help with that, or some, all, or part of your huge list, feel free to drop a note on my talkpage or email me the details. More than happy to help in this area. Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 18:54, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi. Sydney Hudson is a great example that makes my day. Previously virtually nothing about him, including a DOB out by ten years. Now his updated bio on Olympedia is certainly QI in my book! Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 15:55, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, me again! For info, I sent this (non)-Olympian to AfD: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Thage Brauer. Don't know if there was a mistake back in 2007 that was wasn't spotted until now. Enjoy the rest of your weekend (a few more hours left than me!) Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 19:55, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
You are correct - Thage Brauer did not compete. Unfortunately, I don't have a RS on hand, as this comes directly from his son. His son said that there was a newspaper notice to this effect around the time of the Olympics, but I don't have access to it.
As for Hudson, there are few like him out there but, sadly, most are cases of "obscure competitor died in obscurity." Then there are those like Murray Riley, who ended up being somewhat of an anti-Sydney Hudson... Canadian Paul 03:52, 27 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi Paul - hope all is well. A bit late, but I've just had a read of Riley's article - what a character! Working through my continued updates, and I've now added about half-a-dozen bios for British gymnasts from the 1920 Summer Olympics, when previously all the info was just initial and surname. Thanks again for all the research you and the team do at Olympedia. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 19:51, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
@Lugnuts: Cheers - and thanks for saving me from having to update all of that on Wikipedia! Coincidentally, @Connormah: just uploaded a truckload of new data on 1900-1908 British gymnasts! Canadian Paul 02:28, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
No problem. Excellent work all round. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 06:35, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Another one for your attention. Last night a user edited the Gavril Serfözö page, claiming a death date of 16 May 2002 (aged 75), from a death certificate via his grandson. Léoncé Oleffe

Hi Paul - hope you're well. During my work on-going through all the past events, I've found something odd in relation to Léoncé Oleffe. He's listed as finishing 7th in heat two for the 800 metres in 1920. However, the Olympedia page just has a blank space! His SR ID doesn't exist on Olympedia either. And while I think about tech issues - I really miss the age calculation that was on SR. If there's a way of asking the tech people on the site to add that to Olympedia, that would be great! Thanks. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 19:41, 9 July 2021 (UTC)

I don't understand, he's right where he should be???
Okay, we fixed the issue - thanks for spotting it! As for the age calculation, I liked that too and I'll bring it up to see if they find it possible/desirable! Canadian Paul

Oldest living New Zealand Olympian

Hi Paul. Your Twitter feed has Guy McGregor as the new oldest NZ Olympian after Ngaire Lane's death. There's no DoD for Reg Douglas yet and he was born 3 months earlier (unless you have info I don't!). On a side note (for the Olympic mysteries file) Hector McLeod (b. 1920) was selected for the 1952 Games but did not compete and Jean Adams (nee Nelson) (b. 1932) was selected for the 1952 Winter Games and also did not compete. As far as I can find there are no other living NZ Olympians from before the 1956 Summer Games (NZ had no 1956 Winter Olympians). Cheers, DerbyCountyinNZ (Talk Contribs) 11:33, 12 July 2021 (UTC)

I should follow you on Twitter, I suppose. Schwede66 18:41, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
@Schwede66: I sent you the link! As for @DerbyCountyinNZ: I have no evidence showing whether he is alive or dead. I would suspect he is alive, since he does not appear in the NZ Death Index, but I have no proof, and since it's possible he moved and died somewhere else, I don't list him as living. Change of death-date for Marit Henie

Hello Canadian Paul. I'm wondering how you can regard one unsecure-profile at Geni.com-profile over a national sports-organisation (Norwegian Skating Association) obituary of one of theirs sports-athletes ? Please see this archived obituary in norwegian https://web.archive.org/web/20140531213609/http://www.n-s-f.no/filarkiv/admin/2012/minneord_2011-11-06.htm which is written by a former figure skater and a long time general secretary and statistician also contributed to Olymadmen ( http://www.olympedia.org/static/about ) at Olympedia. I would really trust the norwegian source here instead of that geni.com-profile. Best regards Migrant (talkcontribs) 19:15, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

See also this death-notice which is taken from a local news-paper https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10157736613426805 Best regards Migrant (talkcontribs) 20:32, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Interestingly enough, Olympedia was going to change the date to what I had, which is why I changed it, but your evidence is pretty concrete, so I'll forward it to them to make sure that they don't make the change - thanks for checking on that! Canadian Paul 01:22, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
The above-linked archived obituary were already used in the article, but not for her death-date-reference, didn't you even take a look at it or didn't you understand what it said ?
Do you have any involvement with the Geni.com-profile to maybe correct that one with the given sources here... ? BTW. If I had seen any change of this date to what you changed it to in the EN:WP-article i would contact Arild Gjerde who signed the archived obituary through Facebook to correct it back since he at least has been a member of Olymadmen at Olympedia, since I know him a little through norwegian speedskating events. Best regards Migrant (talkcontribs) 05:52, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
Looks like the date-month were opposite of eachother and added a year for the date... Is that common at geni.com-dates in profiles ? Best regards Migrant (talkcontribs) 04:43, 9 August 2021 (UTC)

Belgian rowers

Hi there, further to the ping on the 1924 Olympic coxed four talk page, I can report that the user in question is on a real mission. Moving articles, correcting spelling, sorting out who really coxed and who was a rower, etc. Probably worth your while going through it once that's all done. Want a hand with it? Schwede66 02:09, 30 August 2021 (UTC)

Yes, that would be much appreciated! If all the changes can be centralized in a list somewhere, then it makes it easy to pass the information on. Alternatively, Olympedia has a feedback section... if you send it that way and just say I sent you there, it will catch my attention, but then the whole group gets it as well (basically skipping the step of me passing it on and eliminating the chance that I forget/get busy). Canadian Paul 03:29, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

DOB for Ben Larson

Hi CP. When you have a chance, can you see if you can dig up the DOB for Ben Larson? Probably born in or around 1978, and in or around Elkhart, Indiana. Thank you! SportsGuy789 (talk) 04:32, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

Took some time to look into this (a welcome break) and unfortunately could not find a date. I did locate the names of his parents, which could be helpful to future research. Canadian Paul 01:15, 27 October 2021 (UTC)
Thank you CP! I will try my best to dig that up. SportsGuy789 (talk) 15:47, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

John Gavin Bone

Hi @Canadian Paul:, I've uploaded the death certificate of John Gavin Bone here. He died on 23 June 1983 in Glasgow. His death certificate states that he was formerly known as "John Guy", which would tend to explain why nobody has been able to trace him easily through the Scottish records. If this information can be added to Olympedia, I'll update his page myself. Thanks --Jkaharper (talk) 23:31, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

Done! Great find! Canadian Paul 22:50, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
