Nari Ward and Molly Kelly

I see you've reverted all my edits to these articles so that they once again read like ads and are tagged as such. Do you work for these people's publicity teams? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Just Another Cringy Username (talkcontribs) 04:31, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Just Another Cringy Username, I am working on improving these articles based on the available sources, and I would appreciate your patience with the process. As to Molly Kelly, I have already removed a significant amount of WP:BROCHURE content, e.g. [1], and as to Nari Ward, there are a lot of sources to review and incorporate, and I have only started adding them. You had removed a large amount of content [2], including content that could be sourced, and I reverted to help develop the article. I looked over your BLP contributions after I participated in your Missing (awareness campaign) AfD and reviewed various discussions on your Talk page that indicate you are a new editor. I am working to develop article content as a volunteer editor for Wikipedia, and your assumption of my good faith would also be appreciated. Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 06:14, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Becca, I do appreciate your response and good faith. As a new editor, I've been concentrating my efforts on removing WP:PROMO content and reducing overly long plot summaries. IRL and online, I tend to "shoot first and ask questions later," which gets me in trouble sometimes.
As far as Nari Ward goes, I think the Installations section is overlong and reads too much like an exhibition brochure. My previous long edit consisted of collapsing it into the Career section (since installations are part and parcel of an artist's career) and cutting each installation's section down to a line or two, properly sourced of course. For Ms. Kelly, I'd like to cut the endorsements near the end of the article. IMO those aren't notable and are more something you'd see in a campaign leaflet than an encyclopedic article. Cutting those endorsements would go a long way toward removing the advert-like tone mentioned in the maintenance template. Your thoughts? Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 21:35, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Just Another Cringy Username, and I tend to focus on adding information from sources, including to BLPs. As general unsolicited advice, I suggest that you attempt research before mass-deleting content from articles, and consider how articles could be rewritten in a more neutral tone as an alternative to deletion. As to Ward, the current structure and content is basically a placeholder, subject to collaborative editing, because there appear to be a wide array of reviews and commentary available - those may create sufficient content to justify subsections, which can help create a more readable and well-developed article. The WP:ARTIST notability guideline anticipates the inclusion of reviews, and it can help develop the article to include information from reviews in prose paragraphs, and not simply stack them at the end of a sentence or entry on a list, especially when there are a lot of reviews. One thing I am looking for as I review sources and develop the Ward article is whether his installations can become their own article, and I plan to further review the Manual of Style/Visual arts. It will take some time to rework the article due to the amount of sources that can be incorporated, and I don't have time today to do the work on this topic that appears possible. As to the Kelly article, the notability guidelines do not apply to contents of articles, and many politician articles include information about endorsements because these are facts about the candidate. However, endorsements are typically reported by secondary sources, which would be preferable to use, but will require additional research to find. In the meantime, I encourage you to continue asking questions and reviewing Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Thanks again, Beccaynr (talk) 22:58, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

Christian Smalls

Hi! Thought this draft might be of interest to you: Draft:Christian Smalls. Christian Smalls was fired by Amazon after leading a protest outside their warehouse on Staten Island. There are some strange circumstances around his firing that would be good to clarify on Wikipedia. Best, Thriley (talk) 06:38, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi Thriley, thank you for letting me know and my apologies for my delayed reply - I worked on the article after your message, and I have been hoping there would be more sustained coverage of the lawsuits. I just took another look, and have not found much more. Beccaynr (talk) 00:42, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you! Yes, seems like media interest has gone other places. I’ll keep watch for new stories. It would be nice if a biographic profile of him was published somewhere. There doesn’t seem to be much about his prior life. Did you see anything? Thriley (talk) 14:51, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi Thriley, this Guardian profile has biographical information that could be incorporated: Amazon fired him – now he’s trying to unionize 5,000 workers in New York (June 4, 2021). And there is some recent news focused on him, reported by Reuters: Feb. 23, 2022, and developments with a focus on him, per Reuters: Mar. 2, 2022 and CBS News: Jan. 27, 2022. And Vice broke the smear campaign discussion story in 2020, (also reported by the Guardian and NYT, with attribution) so it should be added. The NYT article also has some biographical information, and it looks like WP:BASIC can be supported due to the sustained coverage. I'll plan to work on the article over the next few days. Beccaynr (talk) 05:14, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
Someone went ahead and made a Chris Smalls article recently! I was a bit upset, but they did an excellent job. I should have told you. I need to be faster on drafts on people in the news/current events. I think I’ve spread myself a little thin lately. Thank you so much for your help. Thriley (talk) 05:22, 10 March 2022 (UTC)
I think it can be challenging to overcome WP:NOTNEWS for current events, but the article looks great, and now I'll try to figure out if I can add any information or sources. Thank you for letting me know about the draft and article! Beccaynr (talk) 05:32, 10 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi!

Hi Beccaynr! Thank you for all of your great work to improve the biography of Lia Thomas! In case you are interested, you might have some good ideas on how to improve the page Transgender people in sports. I have worked on the page before (it needs work) and there’s been a bit of resistance on it too. Granted I think the Lia Thomas page is currently the priority whereas her page has about 10 times as many views lately, though both pages have spiked. Thank you for your great edits. -TenorTwelve (talk) 00:11, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi TenorTwelve, thank you, and for your work on both articles, as well as your post at BLPN, and my apologies for my delayed reply here. I have reviewed and made updates to the Transgender people in sports article - I will plan on continuing to work on the article, but I also agree that Lia Thomas is currently a priority for attention. Thanks again, Beccaynr (talk) 17:25, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

You've made some good edits. Wondering if I should withdraw my AfD. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:52, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

No sooner did I write this, that another editor voted to delete. Thanks anyway. Magnolia677 (talk) 11:03, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
Thank you, Magnolia677, and this was one of the times where I found myself thinking "journalists are the worst" in a lighthearted sense, because hits to their own writing can make research so much more challenging. I also think people who switch careers, or have multiple potentially notable activities are generally challenging when they don't appear to accumulate sufficient secondary attention to make a clear case for notability for one of the additional subject-specific notability guidelines. I'm not necessarily convinced that there isn't more secondary material available, I just haven't been able to find it (yet), and the challenging research environment may contribute to that. Whistleblower Aid

I just put the Whistleblower Aid article into main space. Please feel free to add anything further. I’m thinking it will make a great DYK. Best, Thriley (talk) 17:52, 27 March 2022 (UTC)
