RfA standards[edit]

Just letting you know that both of the pages you link to have been deleted. Enigma message 04:17, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some comments[edit]

I think you should perhaps reconsider a few points on schools, streets, and hamlets. Consider the high school in an average American mid-size town. It almost surely meets criteria 1-6 and 8, but it probably does not have two notable alumni (#7) or any notable academic programs, events or sports (#9) (unless, in the latter point, you consider notability to require only coverage in local sources, possibly passing, that would not normally make the program, event or team notable enough for its own article). By requiring that a high school meet at least eight out of nine of your criteria, you are essentially saying that a school without notable alumni or programs is not inherently notable. While you are free to say that a school should have notable alumni or programs to make it notable, and I would disagree, are they really necessary for a school to be per se notable?

Secondly, in some instances, a street may be notable because a notable person has lived on it, but there are many notable people (especially at least those sufficiently notable to have Wikipedia articles) who do not make the streets they live on notable, and even if they did, it would not be an argument for inherent notability.

Lastly, why must a hamlet, village, or town be in an English-speaking country to be inherently notable if it meets your other criteria for inherent notability? You could make the argument, which I would disagree with, that a populated place that is not otherwise notable besides being inherently notable should not be included if it is not in an English-speaking country, but that is separate from its notability. In other words, something can't be notable "for English Wikipedia."

I just came across your page and thought I'd raise these questions to see what you think. Regards, --Michael WhiteT·C 00:30, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I recently (in June 2010) changed the HS standards to factors (7 of 9) instead of elements. I say "English speaking" because I can read English. If I can read it, then I can verify it. My high school French and Spanish are rusty. Bearian (talk) 21:24, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

About your international relations section. Was it an oversight that you did not include "substantial economic aid or information/technology transfer"? A specific example of what I mean was that Sweden in the 1950s & 1960s gave Ethiopia substantial aid in training its ground troops & establishing its air force -- so Ethiopia-Sweden relations would be a notable topic. Another example is Cuba's contribution of ground troops to defend Ethiopia during the Ogaden War. -- llywrch (talk) 18:47, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I eliminated that section. It created too much drama. Bearian (talk) 21:24, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

High schools[edit]

You say "Currently has 25 or more students." Suppose "Xville High School" had 100 students from 1925 until 1935, at which time the 4 high schools in the county were consolidated to "County High School" and the building stood empty thereafter. . Why do you require that a high school has x number of students at the present time? That timeliness factor does not apply to any other category of article subjects. Notability is not temporary in Wikipedia. Since your subpage is tagged as an essay, do you mind me modifying it to say "Ever had 25 or more students?" Edison (talk) 18:51, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Your ideas are sound. I changed that to "# Has (or has had 50) or more students." Bearian (talk) 21:28, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Attorney Notability[edit]

Hi, I noticed you have put 'Admission to Inns of Court' of as one of the Eng/Wales-specific criteria for notability. I don't really think that this is appropriate as entry to one of the Inns is compulsory for every barrister even before they've finished their training (I suppose the US equivalent would be having begun the final year of law school).

If you'd like any suggestions for notability guidelines for English lawyers, feel free to message me.

'Inns of Court' in the United States is an honorary society. Bearian (talk) 00:24, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rascoff and notability[edit]

Hey, I'm think about bringing Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Samuel Rascoff to WP:DELREV, and I found your comment on the AfD interesting, particularly your notability criteria. Rascoff actually meets a couple of them: he clerked for Justice Souter, he's a professor at NYU Law, he's a leading expert on national intelligence and counter-terrorism law, along with Noah Feldman he assisted Paul Bremer in setting up a transitional government in Iraq, and on top of that a 2005 New York Observer article named him "one of a handful of earnest, platinum-résumé’d law geeks whose prospects for the Big Bench are the source of constant speculation among friends and colleagues." Now in that AfD this wasn't enough to merit notability per WP:PROF, but it obviously would per your lawyer notability criteria. Which brings me to the question: is this your personal list of criteria, or is it some kind of Wiki guideline? --bender235 (talk) 19:17, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Rivers[edit]

I enjoyed reading your notability essay - excellent!

However, any chance that you modify your rivers section with "is filled with water at least 3 months of the year or, in Australia, 3 months in 10 years"

Oh, and if the schools section could have a UK translation that would also be great. Thanks  Velella  Velella Talk   22:02, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Bearian (talk) 00:28, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Historic Churches[edit]

I recommend that instead of "A church (or temple, synagogue, abbey, convent, or mosque) building is notable if it has three or more of these factors:", the statement be changed to "A church (or temple, synagogue, abbey, convent, or mosque) building may be notable if it has three or more of these factors:". There are likely church buildings that meet three of the factors given, but would never rise to WP:N due to lack of third-party sources. --Tgeairn (talk) 19:50, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA criteria[edit]

I freely admit that my criteria are among the highest and most stringent. However, in actual implementation, my use of them is quite flexible. Ironically, I've been repeatedly accused that my mission is to promote as many editors to adminship as possible and even do away with the 'oppose' section altogether. On the other hand and just as ironic, editors who regularly demonstrates antipathy towards adminship in general, accuse me of being part of a cabal whose mission is to exclude as many users as possible from the corps of admins! In spite of all my efforts to get RfA cleaned up, I have always contended that the process itself is not broken and that what needs to be reformed is the accuracy voters apply to their votes and the way they express themselves. Notability of Ren Gill[edit]

Hi there. We rarely interact, so this may seem out of the blue, but I do see your input in various deletion discussions and value your neutral and balanced viewpoint. I am reaching out to you because there is an article that I came across from tangential interest that needs a lot of work - work I would help with - but I am concerned about notability of the subject. I was looking for a second opinion on that. The article is Ren (British musician). The talk page has a couple of enthusiastic new editors contributing, but many sources are clearly unhelpful. However he has recently had a Welsh national newspaper article (the nation.cymru link on the talk page) as well as a bit of publicity elsewhere that is perhaps more than you would expect for an independent artist. He has a recent YouTube hit, but... well, it's a single YouTube hit. He has also had a song included in a notable documentary film, and appears in it, but he did not score the documentary. If you have time, could you indicate how you would be inclined to vote if this went to AfD? Thanks! And sorry to bother you. EDIT to add: Just saw that your main page says you are on wikibreak. No worries then. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 10:33, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
